I haven't had this problem in the last 6 years of using Fuji SDs on my Macs, but I must say I am running Catalina, and the SD cards always appear on my Desktop as an "Untitled" icon. However, I agree with you that Fuji should give the card a clearly recognizable name. Thanks for your wonderful channel, I'm always looking for Fridays!
Actually, it should not be the job of the camera to set the name of the drive. It should be upon the user when that user accesses the drives content in a pc or mac. Why? because in a camera, the drive name doesn't really matter because most cameras only have 1 sdcard and if there's two, most of the time, they just label it as sdcard 1 and 2. The drive's name will only become significant once you use it in a computer.
Not only does this fix the issue of the SD not being recognized by your Mac - the same goes for recognizing your actual camera! Now I can connect my x-t30 and transfer photos directly from it without removing the SD card. You're the man Chris!
I have EXACTLY the same problem - the workaround/fix I found was to use 'IMAGE CAPTURE' which is apples built-in imaging app - that way it always shows up and I can download into pictures. It's annoying as hell, but this was the best workaround I found. You are THE BEST fuji creator on the planet 🙌
Yes! I thought I was the only one dealing with this. It happened after updating to Big Sur. I've chatted with Apple support about it and even though they couldn't help me, they were able to help discover another work around. If you go into Finder preferences and under General choose "Show these items on items on the desktop > External disks, the nameless SD card will show up on the desktop. Had that problem, never had used “disk utility”, didn’t know it existed! Thanks! In practice most of the time I connect my iPad to X-S10 WiFi, select keepers , and upload. Upload can take 10 minutes, but overall I find the discipline of shooting fewer exposures and choosing best examples helps me. Also did this with my Leica C-Lux on a 2019 Danube cruise with in-laws, when I only had an hour before breakfast to myself. Had to squeeze all my culling, processing and Flickr posting into that slot. Shot jpeg, didn’t bring the Mac on the trip, got dozens of keepers per day. Upload from card would have been faster, but I used the time to drink espresso. 😎
I thought only I was having this problem! Pro tip on finding the SD card in "Disk Utility" when it happens. This explains why I would get the message "Disk not ejected properly" on my Macbook Pro when i thought the card wasn't being read.
another thing that bothers me with Fuji & Mac m1 chip. The webcam software is not working with the cable. A pain in the behind! Anyhow, glad I could write down my frustration here. Thanks for making these great videos!
I noticed this problem starting with macOS 10.15 Catalina when they went full on 64-bit. In Finder>Preferences>General, if "External Disks" is checked the SD Card will show up as "Untitled-1" on the desktop. I think all that needs to be done is that when Fujifilm formats the camera it needs to use a name like other manufacturers do instead of "Untitled" and it will show up in the sidebar of the Finder.
I was writing a "it's working fine for me" comment, when I tried it to be sure and...I see the exact same problem. When I plug the card in, it doesn't show up in Finder's Locations menu. (It does show up on my desktop as "Untitled 1", though, which is why I never noticed it in Finder.) Also, I 100% agree with the "Fuji, please, let us name our SD cards when they're reformatted" request. Please, Fuji, please!
I'm running macOS Big Sur and always use either image capture or photos to transfer my photos. I don't every remove the SD card and leave the camera on "USB card reader" mode and plug the camera into the computer directly with a USBC cable which makes it readable through photos, image capture, and Final Cut. Like others have said, the card also shows up on the desktop. The are just some really easy ways to transfer files from the camera.
I have the same issue, but the way I solved it was simpler: In your sidebar where you are expecting to see the SD card appear, just click on the computer option, whatever you've named your main computer should be at the top of the "Locations" list. That will bring you to a list list that will include your "Network" and any external drives. You will see it in the list there. Don't know why it does not appear in the sidebar as other SD and external drives appear, but at least it's just one click away. Hope that helps.
I experienced this too, and I'm not a fan. One "workaround" is that I do notice the cards mount on the desktop, if you have that enabled. I don't have to go to the Disk Utility app.
My experience is similar to Alberto's except I am using Big Sur. The SD Card appears on my desktop when I insert it. Just FYI. I've had trouble with the Mac recognizing the SD card if I don't use the SD card slot on the back of my iMac monitor.
I started using a USB card reader instead of the internal card reader and did not have a problem. Will need to check the internal card reader every now and then to see if there has been an update.
Zero issues with my X-T3 & MacBook Pro. I format in camera,& take my photos. Before I insert the card into my MacBook, I open Photos first. Then I insert my card which opens immediately & asks to import all new photos or import selected photos. As Alberto Clivio stated below, a card icon comes up on my desktop screen also.Don't know if this is the wrong way or right way, but it works for me.
Yes that’s correct. There’s a way to correct the problem: rip it out of the Mac and then... put it back in. It instantly mounts to the Finder with the correct name of course!
I had this issue actually with my X-T5. From one day to another, the card didn't show up anymore, even in the disk finder. But when I removed it, my M1 Mac mini "complained" that the drive had not been removed properly. I could however use the microSD card slot and that one would recognize the card. Problem disappeared after I formatted both SD cards.
It is already an old video (it UA-cam timeline), but I found how to open sdcard without renaming it. Actually it still works and when you connected it, it actually mounting properly to the system, it just doesn’t showing it on the left side. But you can find it by clicking on your computer item in that left menu - Untitled disk will be there and normally accessible.
I just bought my first Fujifilm camera a month ago and noticed the same problem. It was very weird. I was expecting the SD card to show up in the side bar called “untitled” or something. However I do notice that in the Mac photos app the SD card shows up fine, which is how I import photos anyway so didn’t care too much. But hope fuji can fix it.
I have always done it this way so it has not been a problem for me. I just click on the desktop icon then the DCIM folder. I just got a new Macbook Air M1 and I use it the same way.
I have never had this problem, use the SD cards from my fujifilm cameras in 3 different 27inch iMacs and 2 mac mini computers, they all recognise the card immediately and it is available for use. 2. just a tip about renaming cards, I have set up the XT3 cameras to give unique file name so i will immediately know with which of the 3 XT 3 cameras it was taken with. 3. When shooting in RAW compressed the thumbnails do not show in Finder on a Mac, but when using bridge or other viewer software the thumbnails are vissible, so I use bridge for culling before downloading
I have never encountered this problem due to the fact that I name and format my sd cards on disc utility in the MacOS.I format my cards as EXFAT as opposed to Fat 32. Fat 32 is read only in MacOS. EXFAT is read and write in MacOS.
@@denniscook7160 I’m on Big Sur and using the built-in SD card reader on my iMac. The card does show up on the desktop, but like the video says nowhere to be found in finder.
@@Maxfli82 Hi mine is n Desktop and Finder although it does delete the name after Format I thought that was the idea behind Format it clears everything.
Thanks for bringing this up. I have the same experience when using a SD card reader on my Mac. I am able to access it via the computer‘s name in the finder side bar (it then appears in the window because the device is connected to the Mac), but indeed it should show up in the side bar like any other device mounted.
The one thing I miss on Fujifilm since moving from Canon was the Canon Utility App. All you had to do was connect your camera to a computer and all your raw and jpegs would be quickly transferred to your computer as well as be placed into folders. I didn't have to take he SD cards out every time.
I may have found a fix for you. I am on the latest OS X, Big Sur 11.2.3 and while I can't get it to show on the LOCATIONS on the sidebar in finder, I can get it to show in Favorites at the top. Simply plug in the card, and under locations expand your computer (or if you don't have your computer listed there hit SHIFT+COMMAND+C). Then simply drag your SD Card (in my case it shows as "untitled 1" after taking from my Fuji X100V) up to a spot in the Favorites. When I eject the SD card, and put it back in it does show up again in Favorites. This is a known bug with Big Sur, per Apple Support Forums. The SD will show on the desktop if you have the Finder's General Preferences to show "External Disks", so you could just jump to desktop from the finder sidebar and see it that way also. One extra step until Apple (or Fuji names the cards on format) steps up to fix this quirk.
I see what you mean but I have never noticed this issue before .... because, when I insert the Fuji Camera formatted SD card in my Mac (running Big Sur), I am already in the Lightroom application and the untitled card shows up on its own as a device and brings up the import dialog. That said, now that your video got me to look, the untitled card does not in fact show up in the finder sidebar but it does appear in Finder, menu Go, item Computer.
As a Windows user i've renamed my SD cards within the explorer. As you, i always format those cards in my X T3 ( previously in my Nikon D700 and even a Fuji X M1). And when i plug them back in my computer after a shooting, the name always remains. Neither a name the camera decides to assign to it ( as in your Canon example ) nor a name your OS decides not to recognize. May be i've been lucky with choosing systems that respect my choices rather than systems thinking they're so much more smarter.
Totally agreed on the desirability of card naming when Fuji-formatting. Hope Fuji listen. But this issue never happened to me in about 7 yrs of X100S-F-V + 2 MBPs, various SD card makes and all the various accompanying MacOS versions. Looks more like an adverse interaction of MBP with some card readers. Happy 50K!
Assume this is a problem just for direct file transfer and I know this is the preferred option for some. I’ve recently converted from pc to M1 MAC Mini and tbh didn’t now this issue existed because I normally download my sd cards via Lightroom, which allows me to not only download and save my files but also to save to a backup drive at the same time. Still, seems to be an oversight from Fuji and/or Apple. Good luck with the subscriptions, love the channel.
hello chris how are you? I'm new to the world of Fuji (used Sony), and I'm learning a lot from its contents. one bad thing that's been happening to me, when I put the camera (an XT3) plugged into the Mac, it just doesn't show up in the Finder with the option to copy the files directly from SD to the computer, I can only copy it using App Photos or I always have to put the SD in a card reader and then plug it into the Mac. Another thing that happens is that when I copy the videos I recorded straight from the camera to the Mac (using Final Cut, or any other import method ), videos are limited to 4.29GB, that is, if my file was with 20GB, it imports a video that lasts up to a few minutes and then freezes. If I put SD in card reader and plug in Mac, videos are imported normally. thank you and a hug from Brazil.
It‘s a Finder bug that has appeared with Big Sur. Before, it worked fine. How I know that it‘s the Finder? I use Forklift (an alternative file manager), and it shows the card just fine. The operating system sees it, other file managers see it, it‘s just the Finder that ignores it. This was discussed on a German mac forum a while ago, and weirdly enough, not all people on Big sur had the problem.
Just had this problem today on the iMac. On the macbook it works just fine. Thanks for the video! I honestly thought my card was corrupted and badly written.
It's actually a problem with Big Sur. There is a bug in Mac that means anything that has the default SD card name of "untitled" won't show up in finder or desktop. If you want to look at something more curious, if you format an SD card in the XT4, and it's larger than 32gb it will be formatted to exFAT. This format can't be read by Mac either, so you need to plug in the XT4 and use image capture to load your photos instead of reading the SD card directly.
You just saved me a ton of headaches on this issue. I've seen several complicated work arounds that didn't work from re-floating the Titanic to whatever, but your simple solution did the trick. Thanks a bunch!
I’ve had this issue on and off with several Fuji cameras and macbooks. My guess is that it is mostly a Fuji issue. None of our other cameras here in the studio have this (Nikon, Sony, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad and Phase One). Next to that I’ve experienced card writing issues on several occassions with an X-H1 and a GFX50S. All perfect high quality SD cards approved by Fuji in their manuals. Nonetheless some very annoying lock-ups and lost images during location shoots. I now only use my beloved X-Pro2 (never an issue) for personal stuff.
Using both X and GFX cameras. I never format the card. Use 16” MacBook Pro and an older iMac. On latest Big Sur version. Never encountered that issue. I will format a card and see if I get into the same problem.
Interesting. After a fresh in-camera format, the card shows up as untitled. Make sure you have "CD's, DVD's, and iPods" checked in the finder preferences.
This happens on my Mac Mini 2020. If, however, I go to Finder and choose "Mac Mini", the SD card shows up there and I can open it. I'm not sure how to "translate" this to your Mac laptop. Another oddity: Fuji announced a recent firmware update for the X-S10. I downloaded it from Fuji and had to fuss and fuss to be able to copy it to my Fuji-formatted SD card.
I hit the exact same issue. I believe it's a Big Sur issue, because this doesn't happen on Catalina (where I get 'Untitled'). I sent feedback, linking to this video, to Apple. Cross your fingers!
This started with the Bug Sur update. However you don't need to use Disk Utility, it should just appear on the desktop as a drive 'Untitled' and you can click to rename or just use it. I also get a similar issue on my GoPro Hero 8 where it appears in the sidebar but not on the Desktop (opposite issue) as GoPro doesn't rename the card correctly either! Loads of other complaints about this to Apple on the web. I've complained to Fuji and GoPro (they need to follow correct standards for formatting) and Apple (they need to fix the bug). Of course, no reply!
Sorely needed? This is the exact issue I have and keeps pushing me to dump Fujifilm. I hope that the powers-that-be see this and take action ASAP! Great job!
I had a similar SD card issue with my Dell XPS. It would not recognized the card. I had to download a new driver and then restart the computer with card in place. It has worked fine for a short while so far.
So I’m not alone (thank you). I have had the same problem, but thought it was my new card reader. I discovered. that If you open a location such as your “i mac 2017,” it should be visible, without having to go to disk utilities. And there you can eject it, too. That has been my experience. Did not try to rename though.
Strange . . .This sequence was successfully completed . . .MacBook Pro 2020/Big Sur, iMac Mid 2012/Catalina and MacBook Pro Mid 2009/El Capitan . . . All showed SD card as "Untiled" in Finder after formatting in my ST3, capturing image and inserting in each computer . . .
8 months later and, I am afraid, this still is an issue. The old Mac OS:es don’t read my Fuji formatted cards at all any more, most likely due to “updates”. The new OS:es don’t either. And nowadays, it seems that DiskUtility doesn’t even see the nameless cards. Not keen to try mounting the cards from Terminal. But maybe that is the only option left. Fuji, could you please start naming the SD cards?
I noticed this problem with Sony TOUGH-M series SDXC UHS-II Card 128GB, V60, CL10, U3 cards from my X-T4. I use one of these in my X-Pro 2 also and it doesn't seem to have a problem. None of my SanDisk Extreme Pro cards have this problem (one of which is in the second slot on my X-Pro 2). I have a 2012 MacBook Air running Catalina (10.15.7) and sometimes the built-in card reader will work fine (though it takes a while for it to show up in finder) and sometimes it doesn't. This only started happening recently ... as in ... I didn't notice it until I was trying to read cards from my X-T4 which I just recently purchased. I haven't been using your workaround. Matter of fact I don't think I even checked in Disk Utility. Sometimes I just reboot with the card in the built-in reader and then it shows up after reboot. I really should've just checked Disk Utility. Sometimes, for me, taking the card out and putting it back in again fixed it. Sometimes, even though it loaded fine (albeit slow) in Finder, it'll give me the warning message that I ejected the card when I clearly hadn't. It then reloads the card. Sometimes the fix is just to plug the card into a USB-A reader and plug that in. But even then ... sometimes it doesn't show up. I was really beginning to think this was an issue with the specific cards being UHS-II or SDXC since the machine is from 2012. Clearly something is whack and needs to be addressed.
Since I usually transfer files directly from my camera my issue with Apple and Fuji is of different nature. Big Sur seems to have no support for X-T4 raw files. I do not see thumbnails in Finder neither for compressed nor for uncompressed files.
I put the SD card directly into the Mac, be it a laptop or stationary. I have an E1, T-20, T-3, none have this issue with my Macs. I even have a MacMini M1 1TB 16Gb Ram computer and attached is the Sattechi hub under it, and it reads it just fine. Are you using the T4 in this case? I saw you didn’t put the SD card directly into the Mac, slim chance of it being the issue but sometimes it is. Take care brother and love your channel!
Hmm. I've not had any problems with my iMac recognizing my X-T2 cards - they show up as "untitled". I use the built-in card reader, maybe a tethered reader would be different.
I'm able to see mine but it formats as "UNTITLED", which can be confusing when using both slots. I'd love the ability to set the name or at the very least "FUJI 1/FUJI 2" which is what my previous camera (Nikon) did.
I have the same problem. The card shows up on my desktop looking like a hard-drive icon. Pop in a Nikon formatted card and no problem, shows up in finder.
I have the same issue trying to use my XT3 as a WebCam. Once I connect via USB, it will not show up in the finder window. I know it’s seeing a connection if I go to another program that might use the WebCam but it will not connect or show up in the finder window on my Mac
I just ran into the same issue and it was driving me crazy. Furthermore, the cards would not show up in Diak Utility at all. After tearing my hair I finally reset the PRAM. You restart the computer while holding down Command+Option+P+R (that is an exercise in agility!) while the computer restarts. Poofo Presto the cards started appearing on my desk top.
I'm not used to format the sd card before using it (is that so important?); and I solve this problem via cable and via Acquire Images on the Mac: browse, cancel, copy, etc.
Just loaded onto Big Sur 11.3 (beta) and the card showed up for the first time in I don't know how long!! It is an Apple issue. Many thanks for the info.
Very odd... never had this problem with SD in the inbuilt slot or using a Sandisk reader. Pops up on the desktop as 'Untitled'. Works on both my Xt20 & Xt3
did you figure this out? i don't have the issue with my xt30 and mbp. but mine is a 2014mbp on catalina. either fuji needs to generate a name whem formatting, apple needs to show devices without a proper name, or it's a bug with a certain software version...
Very odd. I use a Mac and the only issue I have ever had is when I input the SD card while the computer is asleep. But when I format my SD card on my XT3 it names it Untitled 1. Or at least that is how it shows up on my Macbook Pro. For reference, I am on Big Sur 11.2.3 and never saw an issue with the last OS either.
my IPad reads Sd cards from my Fujifilm camera well enough, the problem I have is that Apple wont read Compressed lossless files from Fujifilm meaning if I want to use an app besides LR/ Photoshop/ C1 then I will need to save in uncommpressed which means 50MB files! Congratulations on the 50K subs coming up!
The reason this happens is that, when Fuji formats a card, it doesn’t give the volume a name. Older versions of OSX mounted the volume automatically using the name “Untitled”. Apparently, this doesn’t happen with Big Sur. The Canon formatted card works because the camera names the volume “EOS_Digital” when it reformats it.
Weird. All 3 of my Fuji cameras work just fine on my Mac. Maybe it's because I use the utility in Adobe Bridge to read the cards? Don't know, because I haven't looked to see if the card appears in /finder.
I haven’t run into this problem with my Macs and the SD cards I use, but I did notice that Fuji doesn’t name the SD card when formatted. This is a bad practice on their part and I believe they are the ones who should add a default name, even if this isn’t the source of the problem you are running into; all of my other cameras do this and it is odd that Fuji doesn’t.
Hi, I just got a new XT4, I have the same issue but more complicated. The thing is I cannot rename the SD card in Disk Utility. It is visible as a grey name ''disk2s1'' But every options I try will give errors, even formatting the SD card... What to do?
I really don’t remember the last time I formatted my card on my X-T4 (months ago), but I remember that it worked as expected when I insert it into my MacBook Air.
Strange ! I work the same way you do , always format my cards in the camera ( X-E2 , X-T3) and they always show up as an icon on desktop once inserted in either my 2010 or my 2015 Macbookpro. Right that the card is named "NO NAME" but it's a name by the way and it shows up with no problem ...both for import photos or export firware files.
I have several SD CARDS and they work perfect from my Fujis and my Macs. I let them untitled, because I do like you and reformat them everytime I start a new shooting, and the Macs do recognize them straight away as "Untitled", wether from the card slot on my Air or into the card slot in my plugged BENQ screen. So I suppose you have potentially a problem with Big Sur (I stayed with High Sierra on my ancient MB Air, and on Mojave on my Mac Mini), or else, with some conflict with another software, maybe a driver of some sort you'd have on your Macs?
I use mac M1 and I have not this problem with sd card formatted on my Fujifilm X100V but I can't use directly X100V as SD card reader connected to mac m1, I can see the device in Photo App but not in finder or Disk Utility, works well in Win10
How to fix this problem: 1 - format the card in your Fujifilm camera and insert it in your Mac 2 - open Finder and verify that the card does not show up in your sidebar 3 - In Finder go to preferences 4 - In the Finder Preferences screen select the "Sidebar" tab 5 - In the "Locations" section ensure that every item has a checkbox next to it - not a dash or empty box. If any do click on the box until it shows a check 6 - Close the Finder Preferences window - the card should now show up in your sidebar as "unknown" or something similar.
I assume you were alone when you recorded this, which means you actually were the smartest guy in the room!

You can make the mac to show all drives on the desktop and you will see the sd cards pop up every time you plug them in. :)
This has been driving me insane. Thanks for creating a fix, if only temporary.
50k well deserved... you have a good presentation to your videos and hey you can't beat talking bout FujiFilm content.
It does appear on the desktop though...
If you click the icon on the desktop, it opens in Finder..
I have noticed the same thing. For me it came with Big Sur.
Me too on Big Sur. That might be it.
No problem here with Big Sur, my card appears on my desktop although it does change the name after format
Just a thought it could be your card reader, mines a Balkin and no problems
Chris, congrats on a very near future at 50K!!! Well done and my reference for 'Fuji settings and config'! Cheers
Mine does, however, mount to the desktop as someone else mentioned.
Awesome as always, Happy for you reaching 50k
I think this is a Big Sur issue... I am on Catalina still and the SD Card shows up as Untitled for me both on the desktop and in Finder.
Yep
I use a 2020 iMac running Big Sur and when I put in an SD Card formatted on my X-T4 it shows up as 'Untitled'.
This is a good heads up. Well done.
Speaking only for myself, my workflow is now Win 10 and Linux.
Congrats on 50k. Well earned.
Never had the problem. I use only macs and Fuji cameras. SD cards always show up in the finder. Even after i have formatted them in the camera.
I don't have Mac, but looked this video also, because there left no other your unseen videos...
Same here. I only have this problem with Sony Tough SD card , no problem with SanDisk 🤷♂️ MacBook Pro 2017 with newest Big sur
Never had this problem, Macbook Pro 2017 - Fuji XT3 - Sandisk / Samsung SD cards. But this sounds frustrating, bet it helps some folks!
What to do?
My cards show up on my Mac desktop, but not in bridge browser window. Seems to be happening quite regularly now more often than ever.
I'm still using macOS Mojave and my SD card works fine. Maybe this is an issue in macOS Big Sur.
I have not had this problem using either my X-E3 or my X-H1 with both Macbook Pro and iMac Pro. I am still running Catalina on both Macs, however.
Weird bug. My iMac does not seem to have this bug. Would be interesting to try it out on a variety of Macs.
I use mac M1 and I have not this problem with sd card formatted on my Fujifilm X100V but I can't use directly X100V as SD card reader connected to mac m1, I can see the device in Photo App but not in finder or Disk Utility, works well in Win10
How to fix this problem:
1 - format the card in your Fujifilm camera and insert it in your Mac
2 - open Finder and verify that the card does not show up in your sidebar
3 - In Finder go to preferences
4 - In the Finder Preferences screen select the "Sidebar" tab
5 - In the "Locations" section ensure that every item has a checkbox next to it - not a dash or empty box. If any do click on the box until it shows a check
6 - Close the Finder Preferences window - the card should now show up in your sidebar as "unknown" or something similar.
Thanks! I will definitely try this on my '13 MBPro.
@@sirbondman007 if you were having the problem before and this fixes it, please let me know!
One note is you should format the card in the Mac and format it with the exFat type. Fat32 is not ideal and will slow the card down.
hey pal! I love your studio setup. maybe someday you could make a video about your studio and cam lights setup? thanks! big love from Shanghai!
