Hi Emily
I actually renovate these bentwood chairs for a living, mostly those with cane. I'm in France.
The ones dating from 1870 to 1930 all have a Schellack base on them. So you simply needed to wash them with alcohol (95%) and wipe them off. No need to use chemical products.
You do not want them to be too wet, the seat will be damaged by this. 😉
Anyway I like them. You did a good job.
It's just a few tip to save time 😊
How neat that is your job!
I will have to try this out next time! Would sure make this less messy! Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching
Hi Suzy, I’m restoring two Thonet Bentwoods and want to paint them black to match my 2021 Bentwoods. Can you recommend what paint you would use along with any top coat / sealer. Thanks in advance!
@@jhswi1 I never use paint on my chairs, because I only work on old chairs (1860-1920/30), so I always use the traditional Schellack and waxes on these. Painting those would make them loose a lot a value. But if you have more recent Thonet chairs, I would go with a furniture paint from Liberon and a sealer from the same brand to make sure your paint is strong enough for daily use of these chairs. I do not know if you have this brand in your country. If you do, their paints are great and easy to use. I would not recommend a chalk paint. I do not think this type of paint is appropriate for furniture like chairs, which need to withstand quite a lot of handling.
P.S : no need to tell you not to paint the underside of your seating, so you do not destroy any identification mark that may certify them as Thonet chairs ;-)
@@suze9268 thanks so much. i'm in australia, Liberon do supply here. I will check the year of production (in Poland) with Thonet Germany and go from there :)

Perfect timing. I happen to watch this in between coats of using citristrip for my first time on project dresser. Love how yours turned out. Mine had a couple of layers of paint so it may take a bit more coats.

Love to see a whole dining room makeover chairs turned out great
Thank you! Dining room coming soon!
You learn as you go and pick up tips and tricks, good job ! Next time you strip neutralize with denatured alcohol and 4 ought steel wool. You could also take your finish one step further an take the 4 ought steel wool and buff the chairs with a good wax, it will give them a beautiful buttery feel and really enhance the wood. Happy new year y’all
Very nice. I use a cheap paintbrush to spread on citrus strip and then use a stiff nylon brush to scrub off the finish, not sure about the damage to the wood fibers with a stainless steel bristle brush. Lessens the amount of sanding to smooth it out afterwards. I think over time we all learn a method that works best for our needs 😀 Welcome back to the US.
Good job!!
I don’t know why but I get the feeling stephane edited this?? So well done! I LOVE how these chairs turned out!!
Haha yes! He’s been editing my videos since we moved! He’s the best 🥰
@@EmilyFaith teamwork makes the dream work!!
Definitely need a dining makeover!
You are definitely getting one!
Love how they turned out! 😊💜
Totally unrelated to the chairs (which are so beautiful btw!), but where did you get the jacket you were wearing while refinishing? :)
I just scored 2 of these chairs for free! They have a walnut shellac look to them and I don’t know how to tell the age but I’d like them to be just a little lighter natural color, thank you for the tips!
Would love to see the dining makeover!
Coming soon!
Well duh, we want to see every makeover
Did you only apply one coat to the chairs?
Yes for both the stain stripper and the clear coat. Thanks for watching!
yes, please show total remodeling
You got it! Thanks for watching
😍😍😍
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Curious to know why you moved from our beautiful country Canada to the US?
Hey there! My family is from here.
@@EmilyFaith thank you. Love your content.
You really should be wearing a mask when sanding... the dust is full of chemicals and quite toxic to breathe in.
oh my god, why????? You don't realise what those were worth before you did that. Are the Thonet? And why are you making instructional videos on things you have never done before?
Terrible "restoration". They had so much character before
