Refinish a Vintage Chair in One Day | No Paint | ASMR Fable

- I scooped this lovely little chair for $15 and I think with what I have around the house, I can give it a quick ONE DAY REFINISH! I'm keeping it "softly rustic", so no need to get the chemicals and tiny scrapers out, but I will need to face my "chair phobia" and do a hefty amount of sanding to smooth out all that wear and tear. Come with me and listen in on this ASMR Fable!

Amazing what cleaning, sanding and wax can do to a chair. The extra padding makes the seat look inviting. You restored her charm. ❤️
Thank you very much!
Lovely, sweet, beautiful ❣️❣️❣️
Thank you! 😊
A “mime” fable! I’m surprised at how much of the creative energy comes through with out narrative. Somehow this sweet refresh works so well in that mode. Very nice!
Yes, it's interesting isn't it? Many thanks!
Great Job ! Andy
Many thanks!
Usually I’m not a fan of the distressed look, but this I really like! Very nicely done.
Yay, thanks so much! Yes, it kind of reads "softly rustic" to me. 😂👍
I like the way you jump in and do it! Bravo!😊👋🏼
Thank you! 😃
Cyd in MD. The furniture gods are looking down on you and smiling. Thankyou for taking this "second hand rose" and treating her to a spa day. I think I could hear her sighing with every treatment 🙂
Oh wow - love that so much, Cyd!! Many thanks. 😊
Hey, I’m in Maryland too! I often wish Andy lived on this side of the country so I could buy one of her beautiful creations and maybe even get her to give a class in redoing furniture.
I think this is one of my favorites!!
Wow, thank you!
Beautiful salvage Andy...
Thanks! 👍🪑
pretty. I used a 4 inch mattress topper to upholster my dining chairs.
Very nice! Thanks so much.
When I was growing up in the 50's my grandmother's dining room chairs were very similar to your find. The only real difference, the rose is slightly different. My sister now owns those chairs. I still love them they are beautiful and hold sentimental value.
Wow, thank you for sharing! I totally relate to that - dining room chairs are places we all sit together and share, laugh, eat...all the best stuff of life.
Precious as always, my friend! ❤. But I've missed your voice and your stories today 😍. Always looking forward to see a new video from you. Greetings from Spain ❤❤❤
Many thanks!! Don't worry, will be back soon with the regular Fables! 😊💗🙏
Love what you did with the chair. You are so very tallented. Love listening to your fables. You make you furniture flipping so so entertaining. On another note my grandmother had 4 chairs exactly like that with a really neat unusual vintage table that went with the chairs. When she passed, my mom got them. When my mom passed who knows what my brother did with them. He did not appreciate vintage things or things that had been in the family for so so many years. I wish i would have been able to get them. They looked almost brand new as my grandma and mother took very good care of their things.
Oh wow, thank you for sharing that! Yes, not everyone sees the same value in these pieces that folks like us do. 😊💗🙏
Thank you for saving this poor sweet little chair. It’s so lovely now! I have 2 kitchen chairs from my parents’ house, circa late 1940s, solid maple with vinyl seat cushions. They don’t have the pretty lines of your little rescue, but I’m thinking I could do what you did and they’d be very nice. (I was quoted a huge sum to have them done professionally). You’ve inspired me!
Oh wow, I'm so glad!! Yes, I decided to not get too fussy with it, and loved this "softly rustic" look. 😊 Many thanks!
Lovely. Liked the quiet
Great to hear that, thanks so much!
Gorgeous!!!😍🥰
Yay, thanks so much!
This reminds me so much of my first furniture restoration/gold leafing/decorative arts class when I lived overseas. We were required to bring in an old, poor condition piece so we can start from scratch learning the basics like cleaning, checking for wood worm holes, refinishing etc. I still have my -now beautiful-first piece I worked on as well as the very dilapidated chairs I got in Vienna, my husband was apoplectic that I actually spent 5 dlls a piece for those, so bad they looked! I still have all those pieces and they look beautiful. In restoration, my instructor always suggested to keep a tiny piece of the original paint, fabric, colour etc, just as a reminder of where the piece came from. I gave you a "Like" before I watched the video Andy, I love your work! Have a great week!
Wow, thank you for sharing that - how cool! Many thanks. 😊🙏💗
andy!!! i am in love with you!! that chair refinish was out of the ballpark!! i am so glad you left the original backing under the chair!!! i was so verklempt watching this video… thank you sweetheart!!!
Thanks so much!
We love them whenever you post - take care of YOU enjoy your life!!😊
Many many thanks!
Charming little chair. Lovely wood tone, carved rose, and bird decal.🩷🐦🌿🪺
Thank you! Cheers!
I Love Love Love the quiet refinish video. It is so calming. Thank you.
You are so welcome! So glad to hear your enjoyed this different style, thanks so much.
Oh, Andy, I love this! The fabric is perfect and a nice thick padded seat will be such a comfy desk chair. I hope your daughter loves it as much as I do.
Hooray, many thanks!!
I know I always say this, but it's so satisfying when you get out the hose, LOL! Great little project, good job! 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍 💦
12:34 I have chairs very similar to these from my grandma! I had three and recently found a fourth by chance! I loved seeing you take these from darker to the more natural lighter color, which I have been contemplating, but was afraid of messing them up. I’m now even more inspired to take on that project!
Oh wow, how cool! Yes, I decided not to get too fussy with little bits of leftover stain, and just let them add a "softly rustic" vibe to the character of the chair, and was pretty happy with the results. (And it allowed me to finish the project in a day. 😊) Thanks so much!
I have that same chair! Thanks for the inspiration to refresh it!
You are so welcome! 😊👍
So pretty! Love the rose motif and how the birds are now part of the theme. I heard some faint bird sounds in the background too. 🌹 🪑
Thank you! 😊 Yes, they were out singing for sure.
Oh how pretty! I have a set of 6 dining chairs very much like this that I’ve been wanting to refinish... love the naked wood look!
Thanks so much! Yes, I loved that "softly rustic" look for sure.
Now I know what sort of color would live under that type of older color stain by just sanding..I lke the soft tone, stencil choice and the cover too...btw I almost expected Biff or Drea to make a cameo with a comment, but, alas it was a truly a short sweet asmr..loved it.
Thanks so much!! Lol, I know what you mean - I could imagine one or both of them doing that...😊💗🪑
Pretty.
Thanks!
Great job! I love the choice of fabric and the bird is a nice touch. Love that rose! As always, you did not disappoint. 😊😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job! I like that the fabric also has a bird theme to go with the stencil! Looking forward to the whole cast sometime soon!
Thanks so much! 🕊🪑 They're looking forward to being back soon too!
So cute!An elegant transformation.
Thank you! 😊
Simple refresh brought out the chairs beauty. Great days effort 🌼
Thank you so much! 😊🪑
Excellent!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
The chair turned out perfect BTW. Today I was in our local thrift store and saw 2 chairs same era and size, but neither had that beautiful rose. You did a great job on that chair and I loved that you didn't paint and the wax finish was the icing on the cake. No wonder you daughter was delighted.
So wonderful to hear this, thank you so much! 💗🪑
What a lovely refresh and a sweet result! I love it! I did a similar refresh on an old piano bench that my great grandpa made for my mom as a child. It was my first furniture project and it still makes me happy every time I see it because it turned out so nicely! ❤
Thanks, and thanks for sharing that!
for a cleaner cut edge, try placing a metal ruler on the mark. press down on the ruler (or kneel) to compress the foam. cuttalong the hard metal edge into the compressed foam. You should get a cleaner cut. I love your veideos and your stories and your "Mom"
Great tip! And so glad to hear that, thanks so much!
What a fabulous idea for a video between videos and a gorgeous result. Looking forward to seeing the fable you've been working on in the background too 🙂
Thanks so much! Love that you like that as an idea, and can't wait to share the bigger project! 😊
Scour local thrift stores and garage sales for an electric carving knife. They are excellent for cutting foam. The chair looks great! Love your videos!
Great tip!! Many thanks. 😊
Such a sweet transformation Andy... love the birdie🥰
Thanks so much! 😊
She's beautiful and the transfer is perfect.
(An electric knife makes cutting foam very easy.)
Many thanks! Yes - such a great tip!!
So Beautiful!! Love the age of the wood after cleaning, sanding , & a bit of wax!! The fabric and the stencil were made for each other!! I think you conquered your chair phobia!!🦜🌱💓💫
Thank you so much! 😊💗🙏
Absolutely adorable! Such an enjoyable project. I hope your daughter enjoys this piece. You’ve turned it into an heirloom.
Oh wow, thanks so much! And she was delighted with it! 💗🪑
That you're turned out so cute! And I love how you "MacGyvered" the reupholstery. 😁
Got to be honest though, your sparkling personality (and weird sense of humor) is at least 80% of why I watch your videos- so the video format is not my favorite style. But I'm really glad you tried something new, and got over your your chair phobia!
Oh thank you! That's actually great feedback to hear, so thanks for sharing that! 😊🙏💗
Love love love it!
Yay, thank you!
Wow, that looks SO good! Love your transformations!
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice! I’d love to have fabric like that.
Thanks so much! Curtains can actually be a great place to find lovely patterns for not too much money!
Hi Andy, the chair is beautiful! I love hearing your stories & narrating. This was still fun.❤ An electric knife cuts the foam easy & smoothly.
Great tip! Many thanks. 😊💗
Hello Andy. I like the pattern on the chair. Overall, you did very nice job.🥰😉🥰
Thank you!
The Portlandia reference made me laugh out loud! Cacao!
Lol, yay!
Good job. Perhaps I will take a deep breath and try to recover seat cushions of an antique dining set which unscrew like yours. The fabric is worn and stained and my cats have scratched it to shreds. I bought fabric umpteen years ago to do so!
Thanks! I know - those chairs are so daunting aren't they? 😅
Hi Andy, I really like this chair you've , I want to say, restored it really and updated it the wood looks gorgeous I really, ike the transfer and like the material you used on the seat I did however miss your commentary I still enjoyed this video greatly but it was so weird not hearing you chat , im sure your daughter will love this piece too , ,thanks for sharing all the best Mary Australia 🌻😊
Many thanks, Mary! And thanks for that feedback - that's actually super helpful. 😊💗🪑
Simply beautiful! I have some old chairs with the same amount of wear and I love birds. Thanks for this one!
You are so welcome, thanks so much!
With the beautiful music at the end of the reveal I was half expecting Lizzy Bennet to come in and sit down with her book! ❤ so romantic
Awww...love that! Thanks so much!
I love everything about this pretty little chair!
Yay, thank you!
Absolutely charming!
Thanks so so much!
This is lovely, Andy. I hope it helped you to begin overcoming your chair phobia. I am a huge fan of doing chair makeovers, especially ones with upholstered seats. I just stay away from kitchen chairs that are full of spindles (mostly). Until next time, have a beautiful day!🌸
Many thanks! Yes, I need to get over it - they are actually really rewarding, although I do agree with you about spindles - yikes! 😅💗
It REALLY is lovely!
Thanks so much. 😊🙏
So pretty! I usually watch videos while doing other things, so ASMR is generally not my favorite, but everything you do is so creative and wonderful💛
Thank you so much! And that's great feedback, thanks for sharing!
That came out so beautiful !! I have almost the same exact chair, mine just doesn't have the lines that go down the legs, but I'll be doing a makeover on it as well after seeing your finished chair!!
I love the bird transfer and that fabric is perfect on it too!! Thank you. 💜❤❌⭕
Oh wow, that's so cool! Many thanks!
Wow! Really neat, and a pleasure to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks.
How beautiful. I love that you left it as is as nd dod not stain or paint it. I was so suprised to see how beautiful it was with sanding and waxing. A beautiful delicate "chair with birds" work of art.
Wow, thank you so much! 🕊
Gorgeous restoration. So happy she found a good home.❤
Many thanks!
Good job, I’m glad you left it natural, it has some nice detail.
Thanks, great to hear that! 💗🪑
Ahhh your daughter is so lucky! The print on the fabric with the bird stencil on the back so beautiful. I especially liked that you used an old shirt and repurposed the memory foam. I love it! What did you middle daughter think? Did she love it? I’m so inspired
Thank you so much! She was delighted, thank you for asking!
I have that chair, it came with a waterfall vanity with a large round mirror. The woman I bought it from said her husband and she had just bought a house when WWII broke out and he joined the army for it. They had just married and he wanted her to be set up in case he didn't come back so he filled the house with furniture. They bought all new stuff and took very good care of it. She made me promise to keep them together so because I didn't have space for the vanity chair, I sold it to my best friend with the promise she would sell it back to me if she wanted to let it go. She already had the vanity. I made sure this womans husband was honored. He did return and worked fifty years. They had three kids and when he died she was crushed. It is a reminder that there is never enough time to love.
Wow, thank you for sharing that story. With something as unfathomably beautiful as love, I suppose you are correct, it never seems like enough time. 💗
This was such restful/peaceful experience for me. I don't know what ASMR means, but it was very nice. I love the chair. I purchased one that looked very similar many years ago. I just thought it was so pretty and delicate like yours. The fabric you picked out kept the feel of the old fabric and maintained the delicacy of the chair. Thanks so much for this experience and of course the lovely music!!
I'm so glad! Thanks so much, Peggy.
ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response; a term used to describe a tingling, static-like, or goosebumps sensation in response to specific triggering audio or visual stimuli. These sensations are said to spread across the skull or down the back of the neck and, for some, down the spine or limbs. When experiencing ASMR sensations, some people report pleasant feelings of relaxation, calm, sleepiness or well-being. (From UNMC/Nebraska Medicine)
smoothing out the rough spots and adding the wax make the imperfections and wear so much softer. This was a simple but elegant technique.
Thanks so much, great to hear that!
My grandmother had a set of chairs just like that in her dining room. She kept them waxed and oiled so brilliantly, they all but shone in the dark! I so wish I had them now.
Oh wow - I'm sure they did!
This just makes me smile 😊
Yay, many thanks!
Suggestion for next time you need to cut the foam. Go to your local thrift store and pickup a electric turkey knife. Works amazing cutting foam.
Great tip!
That's a beautiful transformation Andy.
Thank you kindly! 🪑
A serrated knife or electric carving knife work really well with thick foam. 🦃
Great tip!
I own this exact same chair…was my grandmother’s. I remember it at her long since gone desk from no less than 50 years ago. Two days ago I looked at it and told myself it was in desperate need of a makeover because it is in a similar state of sadness as what you started with. Thanks for the inspiration….I am eager to get started.
Oh wow, that's wonderful! So glad you found so inspiration here - best of luck, and thanks!
What a sweet chair. Missed your voice and story telling but enjoyed the video. It was very relaxing after a stressful day.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the feedback, very helpful!
I have an affinity for old chairs! That one turned out gorgeous!
Thanks so much, and me too!
Wow! I have this chair but it’s a little wobbly so I was going to get rid of it. Seeing you transform this one I’m thinking about keeping it. ❤
Oh that's so cool! Yes it's a lovely one for sure. Good luck with yours!
Great video. Peaceful. Clever use of the shirt liner and curtain.
Many thanks!
What a gorgeous result! It looks so comfy now, too!
YAY! Thanks a bunch!! 😊💗🙏🪑
I prefer your voice but the chair is fantastic 🤩
Thanks so much, I love that feedback. 💗😊
You made chairs look easy to do. It's really pretty, love accent on the back as well.
Wow, thank you!
Lovely ❤
Thanks so much!!
❤ WOW
Many thanks!
This was lovely, but I missed hearing your voice talking me through your thought process. This chair turned out beautifully. Your daughter will love it.
This video is just what I needed. We're packing up to move cross country and I took a brake and your video came up. So relaxing.
Oh I'm so glad! That was what I was hoping. 😊💗
Andy my sister has that whole dinning set. It is pretty. I love it.
Oh that's so cool! Thanks!
It looks utterly charming!
Hooray, thanks so much!!
Nice sensitive refresh of that old chair ... random bird transfer works, especially with the fabric. Well done!
Thank you! 😊
I have this exact same chair and I love it. It’s a smallish chair and I’m short so it’s very comfortable. I’ve been meaning to freshen it up so I was delighted to this today.
That's awesome!
I love your usual fables complete with side stories & drama, but I enjoyed this ASMR version!
I'm so glad, that's great to hear - thanks!
That was a perfectly tuned sander. It had an exact octave between its speeds.
Lol, correct! Makes sense I suppose, since the speed was either doubled or quadrupled. 🎶🎶
Simply love it!
Thanks so much!
Gorgeous transformation!
Thank you! 😊
That is so charming, love the bird details ❤
Yay, thanks so much!
Simply beautiful
absolutely perfection. I love it.
Thank you so much!
That fabric is perfection on this chair!! Love how it ties in the transfer and existing carving. Only thing I would’ve done differently is give the chair a light stain just to even out the wood tones but that’s just personal preference. Beautiful piece.
Many thanks! Yes, I was waffling back and forth about the stain! 😂👍
I adore this chair and I really enjoy Portlandia! Well done
Hooray! Many thanks!
The perfect update for this little chair! She looks great. 🐦❤
Thank you! 😊
