Absolutely love it. Bless your hubby for doing this fantastic job in the basement. Great find and price. During this long covid I have sanded multiple pieces of furniture . A lot of work but I am loving the new look too . ( Love those baby blue eyes. Happy he continues to join in ).
It is so rewarding, isn't it? Glad you have had success with projects too! ❤
I am LOVING the "raw wood" look. I'll be trying this in the summer on a couple of my pieces. Thanks for the video! ❤️
Of course! I hope the process works well for you!
I love the how everything is out in the open on the hutch. The corner cabinet is pretty, but the hutch makes a much bigger statement.
Thank you so much, I am loving that aspect as well! ❤
I have used this method on an old cutting board that I was stupid enough to paint white, and it worked fantastic and removed all the paint. I did have to do two applications to completely strip it. I have four vintage oak dining room chairs that I was going to paint, but I may try the oven cleaner and strip them down to raw wood instead. I will wait until summer time to do this project. Thanks for sharing this and all your videos, I really like your style and your sweet spirit. Your baby is adorable!
Oh good to know it strips paint well, and I hope your dining room chairs come out perfect!
Yes you have me hope . Hope no one comes for me but I painted a corner hutch black . Yes black which looks nice but I’m just tired of that look . Hopefully this oven cleaner works out thanks 👍🏼
I am thankful for ‘vision’, being able to look beyond what something is to what it may become. Beautiful pieces continue to live. What an amazing and beautiful transformation.
Your baby is adorable!! The piece turned out gorgeous! Your house is so charming hon. I especially love how you have your cutting boards hanging on the wall in..is that a plate rack? Just so gorgeous! In love 🥰 with the whole look! You are so talented! Have a blessed day!
Thank you! We built it! I briefly explain it in this post: www.pineandprospecthome.com/english-cottage-elements-that-wont-break-the-bank/
Andrea, the hutch turned out beautiful looks so nice in that space. Love the white dishes on display you and your husband always do such a beautiful job. God Bless ❤️
Thank you so so much Linda!
I am in love! 😍 my hutch is very similar, and now Im regretting painting it black instead of trying this! The raw antiqued look is so beautiful
Best investment I ever made was a random orbital sander, a detail sander and a mask! ☺️☺️. I’ve sanded everything that can be sanded to raw wood in my home, kitchen cabinets, all doors and most furniture! It’s therapeutic using those little inexpensive power tools 💪. Tip: Take a piece of raw wood to the paint store and match the color so you can take a little paintbrush and do fine details if you don’t want to sand those parts. If the paint match is good, it is SO much easier than sanding the little grooves, and you can’t even tell. Learned the hard way on that. Waxing is therapeutic too! Your hutch turned out great, and was a bargain, and is the perfect size for your dining room! 👍👍
my new favorite thing is the flat varnish!!! love it so much for sealing wood and keeping the natural look. I love this so much.
It looks absolutely beautiful and the white goes perfectly.
Raw wood is a beautiful color of nature.
I love it, hubby did an awesome job, I know that the sanding process is a beast. I have redone many pieces myself.
God bless and stay safe 💗🙏
Wow Andrea what a beautiful hutch! It turned out so beautifully!
Thank you! ❤❤
I realize how much work this was...so congrats on persevering. Don't get rid of your corner cabinet. It is a beautiful piece.
Thank you so much, and I haven't no worries! Just have to decide how and where I want to use it! ❤
I love all your Pfaltzgraff Heritage dishes! Those are the same collection I bought before/after I got married 26 year ago and I'm still using them and finding new items here and there. You have some fun pieces I don't have, such as the canisters and the oblong au gratin bowl. I have several serving bowls, salt/pepper, butter dish, teapot, platters, sugar/creamer, gravy boat, and two soup tureens. One of them is the newer style which is larger and one of the vintage pieces which is smaller, heavier, and has the taller castle logo on the bottom. Such a classic design that I never get tired of. Anyway, you have a beautiful home and your project turned out great!
The cabinet is absolutely beautiful but that handsome little baby boy stole the show! 😍😊
Raw wood definitely speaks for itself. I absolutely ❤ it.
I would also worry that depending on what your bathtub is made of that oven cleaner may damage the tub (especially for acrylic tubs and surrounds and any marble tile around the tub). Outside definitely a better option.
100% agree about the oven clean damaging the tub. I also would worry about water warping the wood.
The hutch looks absolutely beautiful. But, I have to share that unfortunately, the oven cleaner DIY method is too good to be true and I can’t in good conscious not share why. First, it is very hazardous to use indoors, or even outdoors as it seeps into the ground. It’s designed to be wiped clean after use in the oven and is dangerous if washed off into the sink, into the water supply and septic system. Water may be the first ingredient in products like this, however, it is the water in combination with the other chemicals that soaks in and opens up the pores of the woodgrain, removing the protective finish. In addition, next on the ingredient list is typically either Butane or Isobutane- which are extremely flammable and highly toxic gasses. We know Butane to be wood fuel, a gasoline used in cigarette lighters, portable stoves, and more. Ironically, Butane is also odorless. So, in the stripping process, these chemicals are soaking and seeping into the woods opened pores. You will also find Paraffin Wax on the ingredient list and in the process of all this, this ingredient acts as a sealant, locking in the Butane, Isobutane and other chemicals into the wood forever. It will off-gas the Butane and other noxious chemicals for long enough to never truly be sure they’re gone, getting into a homes air supply. Lane from Our Restoration Nation on Instagram has very informative stories saved in highlights if anyone would like more information on Easy Off and why this DIY method is so dangerous.
Thank you for sharing, I’m not sure why this oven cleaner method is being shared so much, and no one is talking about how dangerous it is.
Especially with that sweet child on the floor...the off gassing is SO toxic.
Thanks for this information. I was getting ready to try this with a sewing table so will research something else.
Thank you for sharing. I’m so glad I came across this comment before trying this.
Thank you SO much for calling this out!! Wow. I was just about to try this on a headboard. The fact that I would have put a sealed, flammable piece of wood on my bed and not to mention have it off-gas for years. YIKES! THANK YOU!!! I just watched restoration nation reel on this. Makes SO much sense! The hutch looks SO beautiful but yea this process is SUPER dangerous.
Giving this try on an antique side table. I am loving the look! ♥️
Wow what a difference! Looks really good. The work your husband did on it, looks perfect 😊❤️. Great job Angela 👍
A couple of years ago, I stripped the top of an antique chair flip top table with oven cleaner from the Dollar Store. It turned out wonderful! I was outside. Love your hutch!
Absolutely beautiful Andrea!! You are blessed with vision to see what a piece can beyond its current appearance! 🥰🙏🏻❤️
I have this same hutch, I inherited it from my Aunt. I’m so glad to have found this video, thanks for sharing.
Your hutch turned out so beautifully.
Andrea, this is a great before and after! I had never heard of using oven cleaner, to strip furniture. I’ll keep that in mind when it’s time for me to attempt our bedroom furniture. Thanks for the tip!!!!!
Of course! ❤
I will be trying this in summer with two old end tables I was going to get rid of. I’m loving that raw wood look. It may help in my finished basement makeover. Thank you!
The hutch looks great. Very nice and works great with your Table and the white pieces of dishes work great on it.
Thank you ❤
I can tell that was a lot of work, but it's just beautiful! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I love the piece! I would suggest trying ‘liming wax’ it almost gives you the same look, but so much easier. It is quick, I have taken several orange wood furniture pieces and within less then an hour it’s done. Look for it on Amazon. 😃
Does it remove the the orangey stain? All I can ding is the sealing wax that gives a whitewash look.
It looks beautiful. I want to do my farmhouse kitchen tables and my chairs when it comes spring. God bless your little one hes loud in a good way.
Your style is incredible! It looks so good!
The piece is beautiful. There is no comparison to the fume free cleaner, I agree. I just use airplane stripper, outside of course. The hutch just looks so organic. I love it !
Thank you so much Karla!!
I love the raw wood look too! Great job Andrea and Hubby and way to go Mom for getting it for you! It’s beautiful! Love the corner cabinet too! 💜
Absolutely gorgeous hutch. The raw wood is beautiful!
It turned out so pretty & I love all your white dishes!!! ❤️
This video came at a perfect time! I found an almost identical hutch with the orangey brown finish and have been trying to decide how I’m going to refinish it. I want to try this method! Love your channel/blog, your posts are so inspiring❤️
It is beautiful!! Isaiah is such a sweet baby. Love hearing him talk! 💕
The hutch turned out beautyful... 😍
Thank you so much Nicole! ❤
Hey, Andrea! Thank you so much for sharing this process. It's helpful to what works & what doesn't! The hutch turned out beautifully! Thank you for your hard work sharing inspiring videos on making a home for our families!
Thank you so so much 😊❤
It's gorgeous 😍 The scrubbed pine wood color is my favorite.
Just beautiful Andrea…oh that baby boy is growing to quick..I just Blessed with a table for free and the top was black and so is the bottom but I decided to takeoff the paint on the top and leave it raw wood and I have use the oven cleaner and I have to say it came out nice all the paint now I believe I’m going to sand it and just do a waxing on it when I’m done I’ll send you a picture thank you Andrea have a blessed day
I love this piece and how it turned out!! Great job and thank you for explaining your thoughts and experience
The hutch looks beautiful. The corner Hutch could be great addition in the basement.
Beautiful! Everything is coming together and so calming!
Oh my goodness how pretty!! I have an old church pew that I need to strip down. It's been in the 50s here, so I might do it outside tomorrow!
Ty for sharing...i bought a dining set that is very orange. Im going to try the oven cleaner method.
I've never heard of oven cleaner as a stripper. I'll have to try it. I've refinished hundreds of pieces, and Citrustrip is hands down the BEST, and it smells really good. It's safe for indoor use, too.
That looks amazing! Great job!
Interesting to see the results using the oven cleaner, I never heard of it. I may try it in the spring.
It looks so pretty! It really goes with your style and color scheme. 💕
I have the same hutch! Loving the raw wood look and your video gave me the itch to start a project, but hubby turned me down right away. Props to yours! For some reason tho, I miss your corner cabinet for the space... maybe just takes some getting used to. Beautiful find and remodeling!
This is ridiculously beautiful 😍 😍😍
The spray is a good idea for a small project. For a large project the easy off oven cleaner method would get pricey! I did citrus strip, let it sit over night, wrapped it with plastic wrap, scraped off the goo the next morning. I repeated the process twice. Later sanded it with my sander, and did 1 part house bleach and 1 part water.. I was pleased with my results.
thanks for the tips, sooo cute result. THIS SUMMER going to do it.
Your baby co-star is a scene stealer, for sure. His eyes are so expressive.
Love the piece and your style!!Just wanted to know if your grandpa’s things are listed anywhere that can be seen online?
Very beautiful- Quick question I’m just wondering if you sealed the raw wood in anyway afterward? Did you use a wax or anything afterwards or just left it when you were done?
Just finished listening! And I heard you say that you used an antiquing wax. You use a clear wax on the rest of the piece to seal it? I’m just wondering about how to make it nice and wipeable. My house is dusty and I wouldn’t want the dust to get into the wood grain!
Absolutely love it!!!!! I have a few things I’m waiting for warm weather to try this out too!!!!
I have been looking for this information, thank u so much for sharing, everything u have is FABULOUS, very beautiful! 😊❤️🎁💕⭐️
Oh my goodness the same thing happened to me. I tried the fume free (outside)since I'm sensitive to chemicals and it did not work.. So I am going to try the stronger one but do it outside. The hutch looks beautiful! You are so lucky that your husband sanded for you!❤
Thank you so much, and yes I am so thankful for him! ☺
What sander did your husband use for this?
The piece turned out absolutely beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing this process Andrea 💕
wow it turned out gorgeous Andrea well done to both of you, the hard work was worth it but it's not as gorgeous as that beautiful bundle you have in your arms, he's growing so quickly xxx
Beautiful piece! It’s my new favorite wood stripper. I tried it in a vintage bread box and a salad wood bowl first . Both of them turned out gorgeous. I’m using the salad bowl as a table decor with hydrangeas in it. My third will be my whole bedroom set. It doesn’t work for all kinds of woods, my coffee table didn’t do well. I did repeat the process three times and it didn’t do anything to it!
Oh good to know, thank you so much! I hope your bedroom set turns out beautifully! ❤
In case the stripping doesn't work on your Bedroom set, try the stripper on the back of a nightstand, headboard or dresser. I hope you have success with stripping your bedroom set.
Are you using the bread box and salad bowl for food? Seems like the oven cleaner method could end up being toxic, especially if the treated wood comes into contact with food. See Veronica Ashely's comment under this video. I'm not trying to be a Karen, but I would hate for the chemicals to leech into your food.
I have watched a few other UA-camrs use this method and you would be the only one who had some success with it.
Morning Andrea from the Uk. The dresser as we call them here (hutch) looks amazing. I love that natural look. It was lovely to see Isaiah. Have a lovely weekend xxxx
That’s LYE in the extra strength oven cleaner. It’s used to make soap and cure olives. It will burn. We old timers use this when nothing else will remove baked on oven gunk, and hold our breath, spray only the metal, close the oven door, and run!
Denatured alcohol is much better to dissolve the orange (shellac) finish. ❤
Absolutely beautiful Andrea it looks great
Wow it's so pretty u always see the beauty in what could be!
To get the rest of the orange off, get some industrial strength acetone and wipe off the spots of varnish:stain. Make sure to wear thick chemical gloves. This is a good way to get finish:stain off detailed areas where you can’t sand or scrape. A few wipes with acetone on a cotton ball for instance when you are stripping through details you can’t sand will take the varnish off just like it removes nail polish. You can get industrial strength acetone at any hardware store, Lowe’s, Honey Depot.
Love the dresser. Well done. I would put the hutch on the other side of the room and move the table closer to the window, try it you will love it. Xx
YOU did an amazing job. Love the look.
I’m really in to the raw wood look right now. But I’m struggling with what to use to seal the pieces I strip. What did you use?
The hutch looks beautiful Andrea!!! Thankyou for the tips!! I love your corner cabinet too!!
Beautiful job I love it. I gotta know though where is that Farm Dining Table from? It's gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this.
It turned out beautiful.
I have a hutch that is almost exactly like that, I’ve been thinking about what to do with it. Yours is beautiful.
Thank you! I hope this process is helpful for you! ❤
Beautiful! Gre job! And pre little Isaiah is a doll!
What a beautiful hutch ❣️❣️
Love this!!!! I will have to try!!!... beautiful 👍
The hutch turned out great!
Wow what a beautiful piece!!! Have you consider maybe put it in the same position the corner cabinet hutch it was just to see how it looks not just against one wall.
the piece is stunning on its own...but I felt that painted corner cabinet was so unique in your home. Someone else I read mentioned moving it to the other side of the room and keeping the corner cabinet where it was. That would be my choice ... but this is your home. Either way, its gorgeous and you both did an amazing job.
Wow!!! That looks fantastic!
Beautiful boy! Love your vids and your home is gorgeous . Thanks for sharing the info.
I love how your hutch turned out! Stunning!!! Have you seen how oak would turn out? I think I'll try (*outside) doing a small table to see if the wood is a nice color when raw..please let me know if you've ever seen the color of oak stripped. Thanks so much❤
I am not sure yet, but I hope this method works well for you!!
@@PineandProspectHome thank you❣️
It is fabulous! I love it!! Great job kiddo!!
How cool!! Beautiful piece!
Love the way the new cabinet looks but must admit, I love the corner cabinet! Maybe you can use the corner one in your lower level when you complete that space. Absolutely love that sweet baby and all of his sweet sounds.
Looks great!!
Reserch soap finishing wood. It’s the best thing I have ever seen.
❤️it … stunning piece of furniture! Love your home decor.
My biggest concern with this method is the chemicals from the oven cleaner seeping into the wood once you’ve opened the grain. I’m wondering if sealing it with a clear wax would seal them into the wood?
Do not use oven cleaner to strip furniture. The chemicals are toxic, and they do get sealed into the wood.
I watched a video by a chemist, that said the chemicals off gas in wood for literally YEARS. People who would never poison their kids, are slowly doing just that.
I suspect oven cleaner only works on varnish rather than polyurethane. That piece was probably sealed with poly as it is more vintage than antique. Antiques typically are sealed with varnish rather than poly. Poly is tougher and harder to remove.
It seems to turn out really what you wanted . Raw wood is a new concept for me. I refinished for over 25 yrs. and did it all with stripper. The only thing I am concerned about is raw wood drying out. I guess I would consider a coat of mate finish? I don't know? also I feel your tub would get ruined. If it cleans you stove what is it going to do on it? Yes I am old school. Just want to save you a heart ache. You are having fun and your husband is a good sport!! thanks Joyce
Can't wait to try this project.
Labor of love but boy was it worth it. Looks sooooo nice 👍
The hutch is beautiful and looks so nice in that space! I have never tried oven cleaner to strip a piece of furniture but now I can't wait to try! Thanks Andrea!
Yes cold weather here in Michigan. We have lived here all our life. Grew up in Grand Rapids.
If I may ask what city are you in?
Love the hutch. Good job.
Gorgeous!
And I was wrong about the stingray on the board and batten. It looks so rich and clean! It’s like the perfect matting for a picture. It just highlights everything in your house.
I live across the water from you in door County. I’m going to try the oven cleaner and leave it in my shed. I don’t think it would freeze because it’s chemicals.
Oh yes, that should work well! I hope your piece turns out beautifully!
Looks as though you have a lovely deep bath tub! I’m jealous!
It looks awesome, I love it! Great job!
