Must have video for a new macbook users. I spent 5 days with my air exploring the same things. Still find the win-style "desktop and only windows" concept much easier to understand than spaces, weird full screen mode and very specific rules of how apps behave.
Very nice tutorial. I learned a few new things that I'll have to try. Instead of cmd + m to minimize, you can use cmd + h to hide an application. Then when you cmd + tab to the app, all your windows of that application show up. If you hold the option key when you hover over the red/yellow/green buttons, you get alternate display options. You can make your app window fill the screen without it creating a whole separate desktop. I always put my Applications, Documents, and Downloads folders on the dock. I find them useful there. In the dock you can right-click on them to choose how you want them to display (I choose display as folder), and you can choose how you want to view their contents (I find "grid" and "list" more useful than "fan").
Mac Os, instant on, love it. I admit there is some definite weird things Apple does but I prefer it over W11. Though with W11 I can’t comprehend why right click brings up a new look window but other options brings up the old look window. I use both but have no problem doing 95% of what I need on Mac.

As an longtime Windows user, looking for making the switch to Mac, i was with you right up to the 8th minute mark ... after that my shoulders became heavier and heavier, a sense of dread, panic and confusion started to set in
I spent 15 years on windows and now work on mac and it's preferred. My advice is don't use mac like windows just like you wouldn't use iPhone like an android.
Was about to leave this comment, the fact that windows and mac don't come with a command line package manager is criminal. Even arch comes with pacman these days.
There's 3 ways to install apps on mac. We also have install wizards on larger apps. Like fl and waves and other stuff has actual install process similar to Windows
If you dislike the default fullscreen behavior, you can instead either a) option+ or b) double tap/click title bar of application. This will resize the app to use the entire screen without going into fullscreen mode.
this video is so useful you don't even get it, I scatched the surface of this with other videos of setting up your Mac, but as someone that has only ever used windows, this helps so much as some things if you don't know how to get around it can be very annoying!!!!!!!
That installation method is so... peculiar. They could've asked "Install? Yes/No" but no, they make you drag and drop an icon as if you were solving a puzzle or a captcha.
Its way simpler and more reliable, It also prevents apps from planting their files deep into your system and instead keeping them compact just inside the app itself. So when you want to delete something you dont have to install a third party uninstaller to make sure every single file is removed from your system
@@mertilizm can't agree with the last statement, the 'data' of the application will be still present on "./local/share/applicationname". You will have to manually remove it.
@mertilizm it does not work this way for Adobe apps. All of the cache isn't consolidated inside the .app, it's in some bullshit directory somewhere. So I may move the Adobe After Effects.app to the trash can to get rid of the 5gb install but it won't get rid of the 15gb worth of random playback cache that it generated
@@mertilizmeven then, when you go to the launchpad and long-press an icon so that the apps start wiggling, you only get the option to uninstall apps by pressing the "x" icon IF they were installed from the Mac app store, since that guarantees that every single piece of cache it generates is consolidated inside the app manifest . If it was downloaded from the internet it won't give you that option since macos can't guarantee it won't leave junk somewhere else on the system. I think this architecture would be super solid if there was a better way to link the app and its cache together
12:19 so, there's no way to make working with minimized windows easier? Like, making it behave similar to Windows OS does? Maybe clicking app icon will minimize/maximize the window?
I was a lifelong Windows user since 95, but I hated when they brought in Window snapping. Whenever I was trying to just move and position a window to a custom size that I needed, instead Windows would grab the Window and suck it up on the side. It was so frustrating. Was relieved when I moved to MacOS in 2020. But I did setup keyboard shortcuts (a built in feature on Mac) to snap Windows for the rare times I actually need that.
Thank you for this video. Very helpful. I watched Anson Alexander’s Mac Tutorial for Beginners and then came across your video. I realize I will have to carry on with Windows Malware.
