When Phil first came out with this song, i was in my teens, and we all know it was a badass song, but in my mid-50s, it's has an iconic awesome rhythm and brings back great memories from that time. Back then, there were so many bad ass bands with music that stood the test of time, and listening today, the music is better for more reasons than i can explain
Dude, you need to do a deep dive into Phil. This was decades after what he really did. This isn't an original video. It's a live performance, 30 yrs later
South Park mocked him so heavily becaused they were pissed they didnt win some award. He is a good musician tho, yet definitely not my favorite 80's artist. I'm more of a Billy Joel kinda dude.
@nim4464 - Phil's always been relevant since he started with Genesis in 1970, but he was EVERYWHERE all throughout the '80s. He's well within reason to specify the '80s in his comment.
The reason he'd left the stage before the start of the song, was to have his head-mic and in-ear monitors fitted under his shirt. Hence the long, drawn out intro - to give him time. If you watch the rear catwalk as he's walking around the stage during the earlier part of the song, you'll notice that there are no drums on the catwalk. They came out of the floor when he was about 10 feet (3m) from them - just in time for that epic drum drop. Perfect timing. Finally, I take my hat off not only to the other musicians on stage, but the sound, and lighting, crews efforts that went into making this one of the best all-time live performances in musical history. Thanks for posting.
@@cazzychaps Actually, in this case it wasn't. According to interviews with PC I've seen, at THIS show it was played at about 60% through the show. The encore seems to have been 'Sussudio', in which he had his full percussion section, his backing singers, and his horn section on stage with him to accept the applause of the audience. In fact, I cannot remember him EVER using 'In The Air' as an encore. Yes, it's his most popular song, but the rest of the musicians would have felt 'cheated' to have not appeared onstage for the last song.
You were a twinkle in your parents eye when he recorded this and I was a very young woman in her early twenties when this song came out and you felt this song in your soul because we understood

I loved watching your face. Baby Boomer here. Our music is UNTOUCHED and speaks to EVERY generation. Talent, vibe, feeling, passion. Phil is one of the GREATS.
Phil said he wrote this song after he divorced his first wife.He also said He was a drummer that could sing,He said " Not a singer that could play drums".
I remember my husband (boyfriend at the time) driving me to the coast in his 1964 Buick Wildcat with his nice Sony stereo and high quality speakers...and this song came on. When the song reached the part where the drums start going...he stepped on the pedal! My head flew back with this powerful car and the song cranked! I LOVE this song! This was in 1988.
I saw Phil sing this in 1983 at Indiana University at one of the top 5 concerts I have seen in my life. Everyone knew what was coming- - the best drum solo with singing ever performed live. Phil was the Drummer in Genesis and then the lead singer Peter Gabriel left. The band asked if he would be the lead singer and the drummer and Phil said “ Sure” This song is from Phil’s solo career in 1981.
This is a Great Megastar and it's a deep rabbit hole my friend, the reason why he was dressing during the build up is because it was in the middle of the concert... I have been to this concert in Athens, this here is in Paris. He has a tremendous solo career as well as with the band Genesis, you won't get disappointed.
What an awesome reaction. This performance properly punches you right in the gut and then makes you love it doesn't it? Great stuff man, glad I stumbled upon the channel, subbed.
Watching the anticipation on your face leading up to the drums was so fun to watch. I couldn’t wait to see your reaction. Phil Collins is amazing and this is one of my all time favorite songs. So epic!
Phil Collins is one of three artists who sold over 100 million copies solo and with a band, which was Genesis in this case. The other two are Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.
I LOVE watching people discover Phill Collins for the first time!! Phil was the drummer and a back-up vocalist in the early line-up of Genesis, when Peter Gabriel was their lead singer and primary lyricist. They were all in their teens and early 20s then. It's totally worth looking up some of those videos of their performances and tv guest appearances. Phill took over singing when Peter left. Eventually, the line-up was just Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. In the 80s, Phill simultaneously recorded/toured with Genesis AND had a solo career AND also acted in a few tv shows and movies. AND he played drums on a few tracks on a few of Peter Gabriel's solo albums. He is one of the best percussionists to ever bang a drum. A real legend. PLEASE go down that rabbit hole and react to more of this amazing man's music. You won't be sorry.
There have been many theories over what this song is about, but the truth is that Phil wrote this song while he was going through his divorce. This is a manifestation of the emotions he felt. It is by far the most famous song of his incredible career.
Phil’s talent is in a world of its own. He’s definitely a GOAT!! I’m grateful to have grown up listening to his music. He went from a drummer to lead singer in Genesis before he went solo. He did the entire soundtrack for the Disney movie Tarzan as well as songs on others. Phil is AMAZING!! I have his greatest hits album and I can play it over and over.
9:11 Right here. The crowd starts to cheer. They have been waiting and waiting and waiting - and it’s about to DROP! I’ve watched several vocal coaches react to this and talk about how difficult it is to sing like he does while playing the drums like he does. Simply one of the best ever.
Can you imagine how wide we were grinnng waiting for that drum beat to drop ?! 🤣🤣🤣... To see new people react for the first time..not knowing Phil was gong to hit the skins ?!...a thing of beauty... Phil Collins was the drummer with Genesis..who later went on to form Toto..when a singer quit and he became the lead singer... afterwards Phil went solo... an amazing performer..who today can't play the drums as the wear and tear have limited his talent..but is still revered around the world... Pick anything with his name attached..his music is varied depending who he's playing with or what decade it was created... Welcome aboard...🌿🌿🌿

I watched a million reaction videos and this might be the best one i've ever seen. Great job young man
Born in '72...I hardly listen to much current songs...but I will forever have these kind of songs in my playlist. Songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s for me were some of the best. Most of the best songs came right from the heart & soul of the songwriters & singers.
Phil is a master at commanding the stage and the audience! "Just Another Day in Paradise" is a must as it speaks to a social issue that just seems to never get resolved. Great reaction (eventually) lol. Stay strong and safe! New sub at age 66! 🤠
Phil Collins is the greatest music man we've ever known. Music professionals across the world go to him to get his help with there stuff so every piece of music or lyrics that has come out since his debut has had Phil Collins working on it or written by him. That's why they call him Midas because Phil Collins is the king of music and has the golden touch.
Phil Collins started out as a child actor in the London theater in the 60s. He was one of the many round-faced kids who played the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver! In the 70s he started playing drums with Genesis. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of the band, but he quit the band and went solo and so Phil stepped up to sing lead. He could sing and play drums on the records because of multi-track recording, but they brought in other drummers to play on tour. He started a solo career in the 80s, and this song was from his first solo album. He became one of the biggest pop stars of the 80s. As far as technique, he was one of the team that invented the "gated reverb" sound you hear on the drums in so many 80s songs. You know that if you hit a drum and listen to the sound fade away, it drops off gradually until it's gone. But if you're playing it through a microphone, you can clip the electronic signal so that it cuts off after a certain point. So you hear the initial strike and a little bit of fade, and then suddenly (instead of a gradual fade) nothing. They had to do it with microphone placement and analog equipment initially, but eventually it became part of the digital production toolkit. You can hear it clearly on the studio recording of this song, and also on "Intruder" on Peter Gabriel's third solo album... Phil played drums for that. And then on like a million 80s recordings until people got tired of it and decided not to do it for a while. But now it's an option that people can use or not as they choose.
He also sang this song at the "Live Aid Concert" at Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985. A few hours later he sang "Against All Odds" in Philadelphia, USA. He flew to the USA on the Concorde after the performance in London. The concert, which lasted over 16 hours, was seen by over 2 billion people worldwide... "In The Air Tonight" was released in 1981.

Don't forget the love songs of the 40s and the upbeat and romantic songs of the 50s!
Got to represent 60's, 70's and 80's, then there's the 90's and early 2000's just puttering along...now it's an idle with an occasional blip on the throttle.
I agree😢 Time has go e by too fast.
Agreed, the 80’s was the best time for music🎉
No matter how times you hear this you will ALWAYS get chills!
Yes. I've probably listened to it over 40,000 times. Chills every single time.
Oh ya I saw hi live, solo, short raised stage , folding chair seating only, white peral drum set and him in a white suit, best night of music in my life, fantastic experience, love you Phil❤
Got chills right now!!!
My husband and I saw him a few years ago...he no longer can play the drums but his son plays for him and I'm not kidding, he is an amazing drummer as well. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
I saw him in NYC (Barclay Center), amazing night, he was performing from a chair, unforgettable night for me and my girls.
Part of the show....it is the anticipation because you knew what eventually would be coming!!
Does Aphex Twin count as 80's music?
@@py_a_thon nah, 90s
@nim4464 - Phil's always been relevant since he started with Genesis in 1970, but he was EVERYWHERE all throughout the '80s. He's well within reason to specify the '80s in his comment.
@@ianfortier6796 i was talking about aphex twin, i know about phil
I can only wish I was a time traveller, I would definitely go back to watch this performance of the great Phil Collins.
This was usually done as am encore, thus the break
@@cazzychaps Actually, in this case it wasn't. According to interviews with PC I've seen, at THIS show it was played at about 60% through the show. The encore seems to have been 'Sussudio', in which he had his full percussion section, his backing singers, and his horn section on stage with him to accept the applause of the audience. In fact, I cannot remember him EVER using 'In The Air' as an encore. Yes, it's his most popular song, but the rest of the musicians would have felt 'cheated' to have not appeared onstage for the last song.
Thanks for the explanation. I saw him in Hartford in 1987 while attending UMass
An absolutely perfect performance! Agree?
You were a twinkle in your parents eye when he recorded this and I was a very young woman in her early twenties when this song came out and you felt this song in your soul because we understood
These songs are so beautiful that they live on for ever! He was and is one of the greats!
Phil released In The Air Tonight in 1981. This performance was 2004 in Paris. Just keeps getting better. Whether he's with Genesis or solo, he is a great singer, great drummer. Check out the duet he does with Chester Thompson at the same concert. You won't be disappointed.
This actually wasn’t the start of his concert. This was the 16th song he played (out of 24). The arena held about 20,000 people.
After a pause, it was the beginning of the second part
It was actually 80,000 not 20,000
@@bobbiehofer4924 Not true. This concert was at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, now Accor Arena. It holds 20,300 people for concerts. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accor_Arena
Dude, you could only dream of seeing someone with Phil's talent in a 80k arena. Not for less than 1k.
@@scottrackley4457 not sure if that was directed at me, but I was part of the 56,000-person audience for Genesis at Dodger Stadium. Saw Phil solo and with Genesis at smaller venues too.
The build up is a part of the show and the vibe. This song was the very first mainstream song to find its way to TV courtesy of a lil show called Miami Vice
Phil Collins is a LEGEND in music industry. He has been influential for numerous artists for decades.
I loved watching your face. Baby Boomer here. Our music is UNTOUCHED and speaks to EVERY generation. Talent, vibe, feeling, passion. Phil is one of the GREATS.
If you watched Miami Vice...you know this 😊
Gives me goosebumps thinking about that scene!
Almost like the good old days
I just said that!
@@Alltheredroses Gets me emotional every time.
Or perhaps if you've had a history of listening great music....
Really ?!! Impatient. This was a fantastic build up
Phil said he wrote this song after he divorced his first wife.He also said He was a drummer that could sing,He said " Not a singer that could play drums".
Another one of his divorce songs is "I dont care anymore" ...
The crowd knows what is coming ❤
I’m giggling here…waiting for him to sit down!
Yes it is his original song it was sampled just like every other rock song for the last 30 years.
So epic!
Good job for not interrupting that drum solo!
It’s all about the slow build, my man! ❤ This was written in the 70’s- the performance here was 30 years later. Timeless, timeless.
Phil Collins is one of three artists who sold over 100 million copies solo and with a band, which was Genesis in this case. The other two are Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.
Phil Collins THE GOAT 🐐 RESPECT
Thank you for enjoying ! Collins was awesome in his day!!! Love be him always will!!!
Phil is a legend! U just witnessed GREATNESS‼️
He also played drums for The Bee Gees on a few tours.
Cannot deny watching a man lay his heart OUT
THAT IS BRAT
9:11 Right here.
The crowd starts to cheer. They have been waiting and waiting and waiting - and it’s about to DROP!
I’ve watched several vocal coaches react to this and talk about how difficult it is to sing like he does while playing the drums like he does. Simply one of the best ever.
Probably one of the best live performances ever. Peace, Love!!
And now you know why people love Phil Collins. A true presence from the moment he stepped on the stage.
This song still give me chills!
One of my ALL.time favorite songs! When that drum hit 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💜💜💜💜💜👊🏾👊🏾
Can you imagine how wide we were grinnng waiting for that drum beat to drop ?!
I loved your reaction to this song. He was in pain when he wrote it because he had been betrayed by his wife.
It will always be a classic song, as everyone has felt his pain in their life. Phil Collins is a legend.
He is one of the best drummers in history! He was a drummer before he was a singer. I'm so gutted I never saw him live
I did Fantastic ❤
Me too.
Explore his catalog.. Everything Phil touched is GOLD..
Tarzan collection was my kids' favorite
Man, this was great. When you paused it and said you could sence something great was about to happen, i got tears in my eyes. I knew the drum solo was coming. I love watching young guys discover what came before. I'm 63 so that whole 70s. Eighties, nineties, rock thing is kind of my thing. I watched a million reaction videos and this might be the best one i've ever seen. Great job young man
Angry Phil Collins is our favorite Phil Collins!🥁🎹🎸😄
I saw Phil in Adelaide Sth Australia & Sydney. He's Brilliant love from Australia ...❤ ❤
Brilliant 🎉
The title of this video should be "wait for it... wait for it... just a bit more... wait for it... BOOM!"
He was the drummer for the band Genesis. When their singer, Peter Gabriel went solo, Phil took on the role.
I saw him in person at the Fabulous Forum. I ❤❤❤❤❤ him.
"In The Air Tonight" was released in 1981.
correct.
And queen, a last minute addition, came in and said "Hold my beer" and stole the show.
