@@dylanm6205 It’s bad only if you want KDSS and the TRD Pro. The former creates a great on road ride (less swaying) while giving slightly better off road articulation. Test drive the TRD Pro and a KDSS-optioned Off Road on a curvy highway to help you decide. I have the latter and love it.
Wish I could justify owning one of these but along the lines of the comment the FJ cruiser is a great alternative and not 50k and at that price every scratch I put on it would be painful. FJ cruiser and with the left over I could get myself a used sedan. Options include anything from Focus ST to S550 Benz.
The instructor said that the center diff was open-this is incorrect-this is a part time 4WD system,and when locked in to 4WD-splits power 50/50 front to rear-if the center were open-it would be AWD-while effective,is not and will never be as effective as 4WD off road.I own Subaru’s and I own a 2018 TRD Pro 4Runner and the Subaru’s will NEVER go where the 4 Runner will. The 4 wheel drive system that Toyota is using is as good as the Hummer gun trucks we used in Afghanistan.We also had Toyota HI-Lux pickups over there-when we would run light and fast-and they were easily as good in arduous terrain as the Hummers were.Long story short-no comparison between open center diffs and locked center(4WD)

in pre production/these press presentations the TRD PRO did have KDDS and it was about 1/2 higher in the front. final production version lost the KDDS and was lowered about tat 1/2 in the front. so he wasn't wrong about the model they were driving, just didn't end up like that when it hit the showrooms.
This vehicle has a thirsty engine, but this is one of the most reliable vehicles out there. Put some good tires and a winch and you have a vehicle that can go anywhere.
@@apt62 So true. We have a little Turbo Mini Cooper and the maintenance on that is incredible. There is always a price to pay for the power. Toyota is tops for reliability for a reason. Sticking with and refining existing engines.
4 Runners are built tough. The quality feel of the materials are made to last. I have a 2004 4Runner and it's still going strong. Little known fact these vehicles share their power trains with the Land Cruiser Prado from Europe. Most of the Prado is kept for the Lexus GX and slightly down market for the Toyota versions.
Good footage, but there two Glaring mistakes in what the passenger said: 1) 4Runner TRD Pros DON'T offer KDSS. 4Runner Trail Editions do. 2) 4Runner TRD Pros don't have an electronically controlled open center differential. The closest 4Runner gets to that is the Limited model's Torsen Limited-Slip center differential with Locking feature. TRD Pros have a part-time transfer case with no center differential.
Anybody else disappointed by this "offroad" test? I mean ya there's trees and some short slight hills and a few mud puddles... but there's also cars driving through the same stuff in the background. If this is a serious 4x4 pro edition let's see some real challenges!

I've had my TRDP since November of 2014. You know what I love it to death. Myself and all the other TRDP guys included agree that it is indeed under powered for its weight, another 35HP we would be happy. Correction on the TRDP it does NOT come with KDSS Standard. The Multi-Terrain in 4LO does a pretty good job on the trails, but if you immediately put it in A-Trac, it would indefinitely crawl itself out of anything. Great video, slightly disappointed that it received second next to the power wagon, but that's just because I'm biased.
I have a Toyota 4runner and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable all around vehicle. Reliability is unbeatable with Toyota trucks, and they are competitive with towing and very competitive with offroading.

I was simply meaning that compared to most of UA-cams "off road tests", this one is actually a little more off road. Most of them are just driving down a dirt or gravel trail.

I own a 2015 Trail Edition. In a post commenting about the electronics "dumbing down" the experience of technical off-roading; you do not have to use the aids. They are there for the inexperienced or lack of confidence. It does not make the vehicle less capable if you do not use them. When I'm off-road, I rarely use them myself, but make for handy tools, especially if you don't have a spotter in those rare tricky situations. I want to make one more comment; about the presenter's claim that the 4Runner being the last of the body on frame SUVs. Being a former owner of the Xterra, at the time of this review, Nissan had not yet announced the decision to discontinue. At that time, he was wrong, the Xterra is a body on frame and the Pro4X was an extremely capable off-roader. It is too bad the classification lost another comrade. When there are so few players, innovation slows to a "crawl". I know the 4Runner is due for an update soon, I'd hate to see Toyota not put much thought into it.
I think its cool, but I could take my Camry through most of that. I mean I'd have to maneuver to the sides of the deep water, but I'd feel fairly confident even going faster that he did.
If you're an Alaskan you are probably intimately aware of the Toyota Camry's off road acumen. I've damn near gotten run over by a Honda civic out in the bush riding on an atv trail.
It's interesting how the KDSS system actually works. When both wheels on one side of the vehicle are under load, a hydraulic ram at the front and rear lock with each other, providing a pivot point for the sway bars to do their job. When opposite corner wheels articulate the rams don't lock against each other completely, the amount of locking is controlled electronically, eliminating the effect of the sway bars and allowing increased wheel articulation. You get all of the benefits of an electronic swaybar disconnect when offroading, but don't have to worry about activating them. I wonder if the 4Runner outperforms the Tacoma offroad, and how they both compare to the Wrangler. I am sure the lack of a front locker and a lack of solid front axel probably hurts them vs. the Wrangler. Especially considering the implications of independent front suspension on ground clearance and the inability to lift a Toyota with KDSS.
CACressida I was wrong when saying you couldn't lift it at all. More accurately it limits you to a lift of 3 inches max, and frequently people report the vehicle leans to the front passenger side after the lift. Some claim the fix for the lean is simple, involving opening a couple valves on flat ground to redistribute the oil in the kdss, but in fact you have to take your truck to Toyota and have them recalibrate the system, apparently using some special tool.
RickTrajan I think this is their version of the HiLux....they have it under a different branding, but the HiLux is legendary in regards to reliability! It looks like something between a Kluger and a HiLux....
Byzantine Unfortunately, I only knew hilux because of top gear UK. So basically I have no idea at all. All I know is that 4runner has been in canada for a while - longer than landcruiser(which my dad praises for some reason).
In Australia we have the Hilux, but we a car similar to the 4runner is called the Kluger. The land cruiser Parado is amazing. The land cruiser is just too bit but it is the best FWD on the market. In Australia the Hilux is legendary. In the 70's and 80's there are accounts of those engines easily going for 1million KM or 621,371 miles. Only adding diesel and replacing oil every so often.The amazing thing is, theses were the cars the mining prospectors used and still do (they drive all across the north of Australia thats only desert too). They travailed all across the Australian continent with those cars, thats why when top gear drooped the Hilux and it still worked nobody in Australia was phased. I know someone who has a Hilux that has done well over 1m KM's and it is still in great condition....

During the test drive the Toyota rep states that the TRD Pro has the KDSS. From my understanding, the TRD Pro does not come with the KDSS or it as an option, that is an option on the Trail edition.

Sean Taylor , I think it's great that the Tacoma still offers a manual transmission, I just wish I could fit in it. The seat isn't height adjustable, the steering wheel barely moves, I struggle to get in and have to uncomfortably twist to get in and out and don't get me started on trying to operate the clutch. I'm just too tall and I really loved the Tacoma. The 4Runner leaves a little to be desired for head room, but other than that, it's significantly more spacious than the Tacoma, especially for rear passenger space.
I feel like Toyota should fit an 8 speed 5.7 V8 in this car, I would definitely trade my 4th gen in for this one. (if they put the V8 in it) although, I DO think the 4.0 is outdated and underpowered it is still a good engine.
I am not sure where you come up with your ground clearance spec. I just looked up the power wagon on their page and Ground Clearance - at curb weight - Running Ground Clearance: 7.1

crawl control is meant to be used only to free yourself if you get stuck, what you're supposed to use in this truck is 4low rear locker and the terrain selector which is basically a modified tc, doesn't make a big difference, so you still need your skills
There's isn't, this guy is mistaken on a few counts. It's a 2 speed transfer case, which means you put it in 4hi or 4lo and it locks the front and rear axles together. If it had a center diff, it could be full time 4wd (Land Cruiser, Range Rover, GX 470). The 4Runner Limited has a center diff and full time 4wd, but you can't lock the rear diff for off roading. I guess the reason the TRD Pro 4Runner doesn't have center diff + 3 diff locks (front/rear/center) is price. I don't even know if range rovers have 3 locks anymore. The only vehicle that I'm sure has 3 diff locks is a G-Class Mercedes, but it's 2 or 3 times the price of a 4Runner.
reason for unibody instead of body on frame chassis is because to reduce weight and help gas mileage. Plenty of unibody vehicles are very capable off-roading. Jeep Grand Cherokee & Range Rover

Question For anyone with a 5th gen, how often do you guys change your oil? Do you wait til the recommended 10,000 miles or do you just do every 5 like a regular car? I have a 2013 and I've been so tossed up about this lol. But side note, for the most part I love it. Sr5 Premium. Not gonna lie, she could get a little frustrating in the city sometimes with all the stop and go but on the highway, in snow and especially off-road, its a beast. Baught the 2013 cuz I wasn't to fond of the face lift on the '14s. Only one that looks good now is the trail and trd. The new sr5s and limiteds look like garbage lol

This guy is a Toyota rep and really said the 4runner has an open center diff???! There is no center diff (in the trd models) hence why your T-case shifts through 2wd, part time 4wd H, and part time 4wd L. If there was an center diff you'd get a full time 4wd system like in the Limited.
George Sako 2016 is essentially unchanged except for a couple of color offerings. The Inferno Orange is being replaced by Sand-something(some tan color I forget the name ...). There are some minor changes to standard options, but essentially unchanged overall.
I would like to see it with a load, or maybe in some harsh terrain, maybe something to get it to flex... How about a wet grassy hill? That is more like the real terrain that this vehicle may see in the the real life...
The ayy lmao It's fun, comfortably hade 3 adults, 1 infant, 3 large dogs, and camping gear for a weekend all in it. I usually get 15-17 MPG mostly county driving, but i have a lead foot too. Got 15MPG towing a Bass Boat on county highways, and 23MPG on a 1000Mi roadtrip as long as I did about 60MPH. Going faster is an insignificant mileage drop.
the US has 4runner , tundra as a mid size SUV from toyota powered by straight 4 or V6 engine in japan/asia/middle east/australia has the land cruiser Prado using the same V6 and straight 4 (know as lexus GX 460 and it has a V8 in the USA and internationally )...well you guys do have a prado...but only the expensive version all lexus cars are sold the same around the world and they come from the Japanese factories only with the exception of few japanese market only models like the lexus version of corrolla ,,,,yeah ,,,,there is a lexus version of toyota corolla LOL (lexus HS) the last 2 generations were only in japan ....not sure if the last version made an appearance in world dealerships
photonphisher That depends on whether the 4Runner in this video was a pre-production or production model. I believe the the pre-production versions had more lift in the front as well as KDSS (and moonroof). The production models have far less lift in the front and no KDSS. If this was pre-production, then the PR guy said the correct thing, although I hope these comparisons to other vehicles are not being done with pre-production models anymore as the TRD Pro model has been on the market now for almost 1 year.
Dave Newman I doubt this was a pre-production unit. If it was, then its too bad and they should not be driving it around to show the features and capability since the prod TRD pro has been out a long while.
Keep in mind these are very low speeds. The amount of energy you're putting into the brakes is at a far lower rate than if you were traveling at speed down a hill. Engine braking can still be used, with brakes in addition. I'm sure they've done the math, and this is for off-road, not going down graded roads.

that's exactly what I want to do with my 4R. I just want a 2 inch lift, tires and recovery tools. I'd be good with just that.

I do too, compare this to Feed The Wheels Cherokee review at the Badlands though. Its much better. I will concede that is is better than most though.

Scott Tromley Why wouldn't you be able to lift the KDSS trucks? There's plenty of guys lifting LC200s, GX's and 4Runners with KDSS on the forums.

Byzantine Unfortunately, I only knew hilux because of top gear UK. So basically I have no idea at all. All I know is that 4runner has been in canada for a while - longer than landcruiser(which my dad praises for some reason).
In Australia we have the Hilux, but we a car similar to the 4runner is called the Kluger. The land cruiser Parado is amazing. The land cruiser is just too bit but it is the best FWD on the market.
In Australia the Hilux is legendary. In the 70's and 80's there are accounts of those engines easily going for 1million KM or 621,371 miles. Only adding diesel and replacing oil every so often.The amazing thing is, theses were the cars the mining prospectors used and still do (they drive all across the north of Australia thats only desert too). They travailed all across the Australian continent with those cars, thats why when top gear drooped the Hilux and it still worked nobody in Australia was phased. I know someone who has a Hilux that has done well over 1m KM's and it is still in great condition....

During the test drive the Toyota rep states that the TRD Pro has the KDSS. From my understanding, the TRD Pro does not come with the KDSS or it as an option, that is an option on the Trail edition.
Frank - Denver No KDSS, not even an option, TRD sway bars, handles more like a desert racer on and off-road.

Sean Taylor , I think it's great that the Tacoma still offers a manual transmission, I just wish I could fit in it. The seat isn't height adjustable, the steering wheel barely moves, I struggle to get in and have to uncomfortably twist to get in and out and don't get me started on trying to operate the clutch. I'm just too tall and I really loved the Tacoma. The 4Runner leaves a little to be desired for head room, but other than that, it's significantly more spacious than the Tacoma, especially for rear passenger space.

Stock 4Runner have better clearance, Lexus gx have more power more torque! Overall both are great!

I feel like Toyota should fit an 8 speed 5.7 V8 in this car, I would definitely trade my 4th gen in for this one. (if they put the V8 in it) although, I DO think the 4.0 is outdated and underpowered it is still a good engine.

how do you get to test all of these vehicles?
The pre-production prototypes had a 1" front lift and KDSS (along with sunroof and side mirror blinkers). The actual production model has neither.

Hasan Can Güzel Didn't sound much like keys, but i did come to the comments for this reason, some of the other vehicles had similar noises.
In this particular case I believe it's the user manual in the glove box, but keys are probably heard in many of the vehicles as well.
The cargo in these would be protected, too, under inclement weather unlike a pickup where, to approach that, you have to buy a cover.

I am not sure where you come up with your ground clearance spec. I just looked up the power wagon on their page and Ground Clearance - at curb weight - Running Ground Clearance: 7.1
That's B.S. A regular Chevy or Ford 3/4 ton has 9 to 10 inches of clearance. A lifted up Ram with 33's definitely more than that. Not 7.1.

No truck has more than 7.4 based upon their page. Standard spec with 285 tire on the power wagon is 7.1 clearance. I realize all the press release info says 14.5, must be wrong on their web site.

They actually might be measuring from the ground to the bottom of the front differential. I've seen that in some places. But true ground clearance is from the ground to the underbelly

crawl control is meant to be used only to free yourself if you get stuck, what you're supposed to use in this truck is 4low rear locker and the terrain selector which is basically a modified tc, doesn't make a big difference, so you still need your skills
How come there's a center diff? I thought those were for AWD. My Titan off-road 4X4 only has a transfer case and differentials front and rear.
There's isn't, this guy is mistaken on a few counts. It's a 2 speed transfer case, which means you put it in 4hi or 4lo and it locks the front and rear axles together. If it had a center diff, it could be full time 4wd (Land Cruiser, Range Rover, GX 470). The 4Runner Limited has a center diff and full time 4wd, but you can't lock the rear diff for off roading. I guess the reason the TRD Pro 4Runner doesn't have center diff + 3 diff locks (front/rear/center) is price. I don't even know if range rovers have 3 locks anymore. The only vehicle that I'm sure has 3 diff locks is a G-Class Mercedes, but it's 2 or 3 times the price of a 4Runner.

reason for unibody instead of body on frame chassis is because to reduce weight and help gas mileage. Plenty of unibody vehicles are very capable off-roading. Jeep Grand Cherokee & Range Rover

Question For anyone with a 5th gen, how often do you guys change your oil? Do you wait til the recommended 10,000 miles or do you just do every 5 like a regular car? I have a 2013 and I've been so tossed up about this lol. But side note, for the most part I love it. Sr5 Premium. Not gonna lie, she could get a little frustrating in the city sometimes with all the stop and go but on the highway, in snow and especially off-road, its a beast. Baught the 2013 cuz I wasn't to fond of the face lift on the '14s. Only one that looks good now is the trail and trd. The new sr5s and limiteds look like garbage lol

This guy is a Toyota rep and really said the 4runner has an open center diff???! There is no center diff (in the trd models) hence why your T-case shifts through 2wd, part time 4wd H, and part time 4wd L. If there was an center diff you'd get a full time 4wd system like in the Limited.

George Sako 2016 is essentially unchanged except for a couple of color offerings. The Inferno Orange is being replaced by Sand-something(some tan color I forget the name ...). There are some minor changes to standard options, but essentially unchanged overall.

The ayy lmao It's fun, comfortably hade 3 adults, 1 infant, 3 large dogs, and camping gear for a weekend all in it. I usually get 15-17 MPG mostly county driving, but i have a lead foot too. Got 15MPG towing a Bass Boat on county highways, and 23MPG on a 1000Mi roadtrip as long as I did about 60MPH. Going faster is an insignificant mileage drop.
The land crusier is unstoppable lol You should have asked about the next generation 4runner
I'd rather have the trail edition for its connected suspension and just put a lift kit on it from icon.

in japan/asia/middle east/australia has the land cruiser Prado using the same V6 and straight 4 (know as lexus GX 460 and it has a V8 in the USA and internationally )...well you guys do have a prado...but only the expensive version
all lexus cars are sold the same around the world and they come from the Japanese factories only
with the exception of few japanese market only models like the lexus version of corrolla ,,,,yeah ,,,,there is a lexus version of toyota corolla LOL (lexus HS) the last 2 generations were only in japan ....not sure if the last version made an appearance in world dealerships

photonphisher That depends on whether the 4Runner in this video was a pre-production or production model. I believe the the pre-production versions had more lift in the front as well as KDSS (and moonroof). The production models have far less lift in the front and no KDSS. If this was pre-production, then the PR guy said the correct thing, although I hope these comparisons to other vehicles are not being done with pre-production models anymore as the TRD Pro model has been on the market now for almost 1 year.
Dave Newman I doubt this was a pre-production unit. If it was, then its too bad and they should not be driving it around to show the features and capability since the prod TRD pro has been out a long while.
if the crawl mode is using the brakes instead of engine breaking then it is useless and dangerous for long hill... the brakes will overheat and fail
Keep in mind these are very low speeds. The amount of energy you're putting into the brakes is at a far lower rate than if you were traveling at speed down a hill. Engine braking can still be used, with brakes in addition. I'm sure they've done the math, and this is for off-road, not going down graded roads.
