I bought my TRD OFF ROAD in February after watching overland expedition lol. I like the fact it doesn't have much electronics...less problems down the road. I love my 4runner!
Really all the people seen griping online about the poor fuel economy or lack of push button start simply want this vehicle to be something that it clearly isn't. My advice to them is to go look at something else, there are plenty of other vehicles out there to choose from...leave the 4Runner alone.
Its perfect the way it is. Just add Android auto and Apple car play, a couple of mpg's and radar cruise control. None of that other bull, like the camry has. Oh and a front camera too
I really like this reviewer. He comes across as really sincere rather than someone who is just trying to pitch a product or some kind of elitist who gets overly hung up on minor details.
All I can say is I love my 2017 TRD PRO 4Runner (cement!) If someone wants an economy vehicle, buy one. That's not what this is and didn't want it to be ! Incredible vehicles. Nothing like them. We love our 2017 TRD Offroad Tacoma too ! (Quicksand) The two best colors!!!!!!!!!!
which one do you like better? its hard to choose between the 4 runner and tacoma. The tacoma has a way newer engine and more tech. Ive seen a lot of videos that critique the 4runner for using outdated equipment. Kinda reminds me of the frontier. Idk whats best for my needs but i know that i want; either brand a new 4 runner or tacoma but they are just so hard to choose from. They both seem like capable vehicles.
@@beatstick995 the new Tacoma engine has been criticized for being weak, all it has it better tech like push start and info dash. 4runner is better in every practical way. Fully boxed frame, shorter wheelbase if you plan to OffRoad, electric powered seats, an actual shift lever for the transfer case, more audio speakers, MTS and ATRAC, not one or the other. 4Runner is just better.
For me, the 4Runner is my favorite and the one that I drive all the time. For me, the 4Runner feels more powerful in the gearing than the Tacoma. Personally I like that the 4Runner has a keyed ignition and sure it doesn't have the sensors, but nothing that I miss. Don't get me wrong, I really like our Tacoma. I'm just more of a SUV kinda person :-) Either way you go, it's a fantastic choice ! Hope that helps ! And yes, both VERY capable vehicles!
I own the same 4runner and it's awesome. Sure it lacks technology in certain areas but it makes up for it in so many other ways. Put some larger ko2 tires and a mild lift and it's very impressive! That Hill just needed the rear locker, but that's what is good about the 4runner, so many off road gadgets you can choose whatever one you want and it'll get the job done. Atrac, multi terrain select, locker, crawl control. You choose
I have same 4runner lifted and on ko2. It is a vehicle that you can use to get places others can't and do it all in comfort. Holds its value for a reason.
I love the basics. I hate that everything is now electronic push start and turn a knob for FWD. The biggest reason Im even in the market for 4runner is its utilitarian old school approach.
I know this is 2 years old. But, I just got the 2020 4 runner TRD offroad. The only difference is the new infotainment center and the Toyota "safety" group (adaptive cruise). Our 4 runner is so comfortable. It doesn't get the best MPG, we average 18. We just got 21.2 on a trip to Idaho Falls (from central Utah). We are very happy with our purchase. It won put over others for two reasons, the off-road capability, comfort, cargo room. Again, I absolutely love this rig
I agree with you that I would choose the 4Runner if the world was falling apart and I could only have one vehicle. Then again, a Land Cruiser wouldn't be a bad choice either. Good video. Beautiful scenery.
I have a 2018 red 4Runner Off Road Premium. I LOVE that I have a Key Start and a stick for the 4x4. That's 2 major reasons that I love it so much. One of the MANY things I love about mine is the sliding tray in the back!! It's not some new great piece 0of technology but I LOVE for grocery shopping. When I come out of the store I can pull the tray out, load my groceries on the tray and then push it back. When I get home I can pull that tray to the first position, take those groceries in and then pull it out all the way for the groceries on the back of the tray!! I love this because I'm not bending way over here or really stretching way over their to get my groceries. It's also GREAT for a trip and all my luggage. If you want my opinion BUY ONE! Make sure you get one with the slide out tray! I love that thing! ha
I had a 13 4RUNNER Trail....now I have a 17 Tacoma 4wd Offroad.....I can't get comfortable in the Tacoma. I know all Toyotas seem to have the low seating position, but the 4Runner was much better. I also recently had a bunch of camping / overlanding gear stolen out of the bed of the truck. In the 4Runner, it would have been harder. It makes the truck vs. suv....which is right for me argument that much more difficult. Maybe I should have kept the 4Runner.
Sweet....yes, I've been eyeing them again. The 13 4Runner Trail I had, I purchased used, it was such a rarity in my area and it had the KDSS. The only issue was some rust underneath. The dealer knocked off enough to really hook me in. The truck was from Canada and I'm in Texas. I guess they got it at auction, since the dealer knew how coveted they are down here. Anyways, I really let the rust issue govern my decision to sell it, since I was looking for a long term vehicle to gear up for my needs. This Tacoma may go bye bye. The 6 speed tranny is pointless, it constantly shifts to 5 at the slightest incline. The 4Runner downshifted but not nearly like the Tacoma. At least the 4Runner still has a 5 speed.
Love the video.. Atleast for my taste I don't care about the old tech or brick like design or bad mpg. All I look for is a reliable vehicle that I can take my family on a weekend adventure.
No point in comparing the runner to every other cross over. This is not a crossover. This is basically a body on frame and feels and even looks like a truck. The last of a dying breed and that’s the beauty of it and why it is adored in the off road and overlanding community. Plus it has unlimited mods that can be done. Love my runner and wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Lifted it and Threw some big tires on it and it’s the sexiest vehicle and my dream vehicle
I have a new Runner and I love it. Since it's a limited, it does have push button, 15 speaker JBL , heated and cooled seats, also got low range gear with ATRAC. planning to lift it 2.5 inches more later this year
Mike R reviewers who complain about the lack of tech never look at the limited. I love my 2012 SR5 but wish I had opted for the limited because of the full time 4wd in addition to the other extras.
Oh yeah, I wont be doing a spacer lift, I'll be either going with icon or King after ripping away XREAS. It's practically a brand new vehicle, so waiting for bit more for XREAS to wear out.
I enjoyed watching this but wondered how much better this vehicle would do off road with decent tires. I have a 2013 Trail edition and put Nitto AT rubber on it when purchased because we actually do quite a bit of off roading. The vehicle goes through or over about anything. The crawl control and KDSS work superbly. I hope to keep this vehicle for years. Current models require most of the features I have in mine be added on as expensive options such as crawl control, moon roof, and sliding cargo tray. In 5 years I've not had one problem which is not unexpected. This is my 4th 4Runner since the mid 90's.
Love my 2019 trd off road!! I laugh at critics who say it's not modern enough . Think they need a mini van. My family loves the places the 4runner has taken us!! From Moab to Mammoth to mt Shasta. They're a lot trails that only jeeps or 4runners can go. Loving it
I got a 2019 4runner off road premium back in December. I love it. Old school feel. I like the shifter for 4wd,rather than a button. Less of the "luxury" stuff I wasnt looking for. All I need now are a set of good off road tires and I'll be ready to go play in the woods.
That’s a really tough job to find something similar to a 4Runner. It’s really hard to compare that subaru and the Acura MDX. Really the only thing that comes close is the Jeep JL unlimited. All these another AWD vehicles are really not meant for off-roading. What’s terrible is Kia mildly beefed up their garbage and ran it threw a Utah trial with a pro driver. Hopefully Ford doesn’t screw up the new Bronco that also might be a contender.
Ive had 5 4Runners from Gen 3 to Now... Every single one lacked the stock tires new to match the vehicle's overall capabilities... As capable as it is out of the box, Throw some Great All terrain tires on it and you have a WHOLE different animal... In winter states, Throw Blizzaks on it and you will be stunned how good it is...
exactly! the complains are funny. it's not like a surprise to know how basic the 4R is. If i wanted the bells and whistles, i would have gotten a highlander. people act so surprised when they find out how the 4R doesn't have this or that.
Awesome review. Have to get me a 4Runner with crawl control. The Sisters are just north of Mt. Bachelor, clearly visible from that vantage point. Wish I knew exactly what trail you took to get there. Lava Butte, between Bend and Sun River, is a paved road drive on Rt. 97 to get a similar view with the added attraction of a massive lava flow.
Good review touched on all the major pros and cons. Honestly if you plan to take the 4runner off-road there isn’t much better out there if anything in this price range. Now if you never plan to take it off road it’s probably one of the worst SUV’s you can buy. 2017 4runner owner here, love it but also use it for its intended purpose
Great review man. Nice crawl demo. Got a 2019 TRD off road and the stock dunlops are definitely more for road driving but I'm surprised it made it up hill. Also I had no idea the sliding deck was an option now I'm mad 😂
Imagine what this truck would do with just a set of real tires. Those are highway tires. Put a set of nittos or bfgs on it and it will go wherever u need to go. My wife has a 2018 4 runners offroad and i have a 2018 tacoma. I had a tundra but it was just tooo big for my needs and gas milage was really bad. But i go into tight spots and both of these trucks do the job. Wr also live in a remote area and since we always drive yotas we are often the only ones still going when the weather gets bad. Ha
I have the same vehicle as reviewed - 2018 T4RO. IF you want reliable and aren't swayed by bells and whistles and actually take your car off the road, then you are hard pressed to find a better vehicle in the $ range. As far as I'm concerned, the only fail is the stock rubber - total mismatch for its intended use. First thing I swapped. That and the front lift - factory rake is mall crawl/mileage driven. But coming from anF350 quad cab long box - this is noble, compact and the interior room is fantastic.
If my Diesel Turbo Toyota Camry can't make it. I'll drive my '85 Diesel Turbo Toyota 4X4 conquer this freaking' route. Same truck people see on British Top Gear.
Bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5 years ago regrets for 4 out of the 5 years, finally bought a 2020 4Runner, so we’ll see what the difference is over the next 5 years!
The 4.0 came out at the end of 2002 as a 2003 4th gen 4runner. The ‘02 4runner is the last year with the old 3.4 engine and the last year of the 3rd gen.
I wanted a key start so bad because if you replace that fob that you have to have on you for the push button start it will cost you $600.00 to replace it. Also, if anything goes wrong with the push button it will cost a minimum of $1,100 to fix it. Toyota then has to reprogram the push button start system.
I love the 4Runner, I was about to buy one in 2016 but ended with a Outback 3.6 Touring. Same price, more stuff and comfort... But... I'm about to get a new car, and I'm getting a JLU Sahara with some stuff... I really wished Toyota did what Jeep did, redesign but keep it like the classic. The reason I don't buy the 4Runner is it's age, engine, no manual, ancient media group and all those. Annoys me that the Tacoma TRD Pro comes with lane keep and all those things, newer everything, but the 4Runner just stopped in time... I understand it's cool and all but, for the price, it deserves a redesign... I'm saying this cause it will be a daily driver too and lots of highways but I want the off-road, that's why, today, I'm going with the JLU (still think the 2018 Wrangler is overpriced tho)
Very good review. Like many of those comments below, I vote for simplicity and reliability. Those who want all the little bells and whistles and leather seats and push button engine start and that dreaded "stop/start" can go buy a luxury sedan. I want to go off-road with a reliable vehicle that has been refined over the years rather than constantly changed to suit the yuppies. Besides, the yuppies and soccer moms rarely, if ever go off-road. Let them purchase the SR5 Premium. I want a wilderness vehicle that can get me out there and back. I am sticking with my 2018.
My 2016 Trail is awesome on and off road , and to be quite blunt that little hill starting at 5:49 is not enough to bog it down enough to have to use the HELP ME OUT OF JAM crawl controls ... knowing how to maneuver it through the dips would have done better justice to the 4 runner save the crawl control for real bad situations. Here in rural farm country Connecticut in winters it gets pretty interesting with snow and ice of all types and descriptions , I have not had to engage 4 high many times to say little of the crawl control system . Altogether it is a good video ... I would not own anything else ..save the frills most anything else are mere toys by comparison.
Better tires would have gotten you up that embankment without using crawl control. Not sure why an "off road" model comes with Dunlops?? First thing I changed on mine.
I owned a 1987 Toy 4Runner with an '85 front straight axle, duel transfer case, and lockers front and rear. Embarrassing Fords, Chevys, and all other open diff trucks was my specilty.
@@drivingsports Thank you .. I know its 2x expensive, we don't have 4runner in my country, only land cruiser. I am looking to buy my first off roader.. I will search for a video onthe difference. Other than that, great review :))
@ Michael Marijeh, as far as I know the 4Runner shares a lot with the LC Prado. Body is different but the frame, engine and drivetrain appears to be the same.
I have a 14 4runner and a 17 Tacoma and I would have to say in long trips I definitely would rather take the 4runner, the comfort and ride are way better on longer trips
Im in a big dilemma right now. I have order a 4runner trail 2021 in Canada like 50000$ cad And there is a 2018 4runner off road ~47000$ with 24000km and very clean. Wish one should i to take?? 😵😵😭😭 And you got the best video i have seen for 4runner
One glitch I see at 6:00 is that you could air down the tires and that would give the tires a better traction. Then the tire pressure warning light would blind ya. :D "I don't know where I am" You're at the right place. :D
Rumor has it that the 2020 4Runner will have Toyota Safety Sense and Android Auto/Apple Car Play. Maybe Toyota will even do a redesign in 2021. Who knows? (Nice drone footage, by the way.)
NHTSA and transport canada require ALL new automobiles to have backup cams starting may 2018. if it's a 2018 model vehicle in US or canada, it has a backup cam.
Wife has a 17 4runner trd OR and I have a 12 tacoma sr5 4x. Reason we chose them and likely a Tundra soon, is because Toyota has stuck to its guns in the face of an ever increasing demand for "luxury off- road vehicles =gimmicks". Give me function over fashion anyday. Although I will admit both V6s tend to be gutless in the mountains, especially towing or hauling. Wouldn't change them otherwise.
I just started watching your channel. This and the Tacoma. I’m guessing you guys are operating out of Oregon. Everything I’ve seen looks like central Oregon, the coast and the gorge. Even the trd pro footage looked like volcanic rock that it was sliding down. Cheers if ya are in Oregon. If so, whereabouts?
If you want push button that bad get a Highlander. The 4RUNNER doesn’t need electronic or LED headlights less problems in the future and they just work and when they do go out you just pop a new bulb in unlike new LED headlights.
I agree with it not needing improvements just for the sake of following the herd but to be honest the illumination from the stock headlights is ASTOUNDINGLY poor and does need to be addressed. My 22 y.o lifted TJ does a better job lighting things up and that is just ridiculous.
yeah everything is great about them except for when you check the cost to take a 1000 mile trip, due to that 20mpg, and it probably doesn't even get 20. more like 17; But other than that, yeah, it is probably one of the best vehicles that there are.
Ill tell you what when your waist deep in snow and mud up in the mountains on a hunting trip the last thing on your mind is a push start button or that apple car thingy
I like 4runners but in our country last ones model year was 1992. Bummer. On drivetrain system there were some changes refering to Tacoma i think. Am i right? Tacoma has electronic 2h-4h-4l button, this one has a transmission lever.
I dont know, I mean the 1GRFE has probably reached immortal status. Its what toyota throws in its land cruisers in australia and africa, not very prone to breaking down.
I bought my TRD OFF ROAD in February after watching overland expedition lol. I like the fact it doesn't have much electronics...less problems down the road. I love my 4runner!

Hippie Bits I got push button
Completely agree. Leave it alone
I wish they would leave the price alone. It’s seems to keep going up. Old school utility with new school pricing.

Just shows how awesome crawl control is. It basically has all season road tires, not proper all terrain tires and it went right up the hill.
This (tires) is one area where I feel Toyota could do better... A/T tires on the TRD Off Road should be standard.

I also love the height. Let's me drive shoulder to shoulder with the trucks of Texas.
"Nobody's getting up here in a Camry. You just can't." CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! Also, anyone let me borrow their Camry? thx
+Ben VS Ben I want to test '84 Camry Diesel Turbo like yours too.
If my Diesel Turbo Toyota Camry can't make it. I'll drive my '85 Diesel Turbo Toyota 4X4 conquer this freaking' route. Same truck people see on British Top Gear.
I love toyota 4 runner
That hill climb......ON STREET TIRES!
Good stuff. It,s obviously painful how little "off-road"experience you have.Keep up good work .your learning.
Bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5 years ago regrets for 4 out of the 5 years, finally bought a 2020 4Runner, so we’ll see what the difference is over the next 5 years!
So cool. Nothing like it.
4.0 debuted in ‘03
Also, why not engage the rear differential lock, rather than crawl control?
Build Quality. Nuff said.
Holy shit that drift clip was dope
Team sr5 4x4 checking in!
I love this car. I hope have one
That’s what I’m talking about. One vehicle if world apocalypse were to happen. TOYOTA 4RUNNER for sure.
Better tires would have gotten you up that embankment without using crawl control. Not sure why an "off road" model comes with Dunlops?? First thing I changed on mine.
I love my 4Runner
I owned a 1987 Toy 4Runner with an '85 front straight axle, duel transfer case, and lockers front and rear. Embarrassing Fords, Chevys, and all other open diff trucks was my specilty.
How is it compared to TRD PRO ?
How is the 4WD system works VS AWD ?
is it really good or you are better off with a Land Cruiser ?
4wd vs Awd is a whole video into itself. Outside the scope of this review. Land Cruisers are almost 2X as expensive.
Good review, I almost want to trade in my tundra and get a 4Runner but it is really a tough decision to give up on that beast.
i traded in my tundra for a 4R. it was too big when i went trail riding and the georgia traverse. the 4R is perfect for my needs.
Did this year offer the moonroof on the TRD off-road? Now you can get it without going up to the trd off-road premium
Im in a big dilemma right now.
I have order a 4runner trail 2021 in Canada like 50000$ cad
And there is a 2018 4runner off road ~47000$ with 24000km and very clean.
Wish one should i to take?? 😵😵😭😭
And you got the best video i have seen for 4runner
I would say hold out for the 2021. New vs used for the 4r makes it somewhat a joke to spend only 3k less
@@ButteredUpToast not the same trim TRD off road cost almost 60k cad new
One glitch I see at 6:00 is that you could air down the tires and that would give the tires a better traction. Then the tire pressure warning light would blind ya. :D
"I don't know where I am" You're at the right place. :D
Great vid, I love my MY18 TRD ORP
Rumor has it that the 2020 4Runner will have Toyota Safety Sense and Android Auto/Apple Car Play. Maybe Toyota will even do a redesign in 2021. Who knows? (Nice drone footage, by the way.)
One day not too long from now many are going to ask....why don't we have vehicles like this to choose anymore. #progress?
I think if civilization was ending I get the land cruiser but would 2nd the 4Runner.
It's only three hours from Redmond, Oregon, just north of Bend!
I would be interested in your opinion of post apocalypse vehicle after you test a Land Cruiser.
This the only SUV. The rest should be called SCV. Sport Comfort Vehicle.
16mpg is what I'm getting on my 2018 with a 3 inch lift and some a/t nitto grappler g2 tires
I'm getti g 15.1 mpg mostly city falken atw3 stock size
Ben VS Ben mine are quite. I like it more than stock street tires
try RCI. they make aluminum skids@Ben VS Ben
Really enjoyed this review
Great video!
Great for camping in, a twin mattress is all you need , the luxury of air conditioning, or heat , what more could you ask for.....
Get that thing some BFG KO's
NHTSA and transport canada require ALL new automobiles to have backup cams starting may 2018. if it's a 2018 model vehicle in US or canada, it has a backup cam.
Can I trade the ridiculous fake hood scoop for some decent lighting?
Wife has a 17 4runner trd OR and I have a 12 tacoma sr5 4x. Reason we chose them and likely a Tundra soon, is because Toyota has stuck to its guns in the face of an ever increasing demand for "luxury off- road vehicles =gimmicks". Give me function over fashion anyday. Although I will admit both V6s tend to be gutless in the mountains, especially towing or hauling. Wouldn't change them otherwise.
Again, if terrain select was used it would've gotten through all of that without crawl control.
The NEW 4Runner will be here any time soon
This didn't age well lol
You need to wear a dress when you drive that Subaru. LOL!
Great video though.
My choice when the society is done.....will be Tacoma, 4runner, or LandCruiser! Love my 15 Tacoma TRD OR. The ATRAC is amazing.
How do you use atrac and what type of condition? I’m new to this.
Does the 4Runner use regular or premium fuel?
To note the host statement : the Landcruiser is si much more reliable not going wrong with either, unless you want the V6 mpg
+Grant Brink we’re based in Bellevue, but film all over the PNW. Thanks for watching!
I love the 4Runner. Other than safety sense and car play, I’d prefer Toyota to not change anything.
Subarus are a 100k Mile Vehicles. Toyota SUV and Pickups are 400k Mile Vehicles.
Would be interested in seeing a review of the 2019 Santa Fe ultimate ... is that in the works?
yeah everything is great about them except for when you check the cost to take a 1000 mile trip, due to that 20mpg, and it probably doesn't even get 20. more like 17; But other than that, yeah, it is probably one of the best vehicles that there are.
Thank you so much for this!
Ill tell you what when your waist deep in snow and mud up in the mountains on a hunting trip the last thing on your mind is a push start button or that apple car thingy
Love my 4runner
Love my land cruiser
I like 4runners but in our country last ones model year was 1992. Bummer. On drivetrain system there were some changes refering to Tacoma i think. Am i right? Tacoma has electronic 2h-4h-4l button, this one has a transmission lever.
JDM Spirit Turkey From 15 or 16 it is changed to a button from the lever.
shame they ditched the immortal 4.7 v8
Still got mine in an '05 Sport...
I dont know, I mean the 1GRFE has probably reached immortal status. Its what toyota throws in its land cruisers in australia and africa, not very prone to breaking down.
@@silviogolden8360 just saw an 05 sport v8 in my area with 135k miles, new lift and tires. I want it
