  • JB Hager, Johan Bruyneel, and Spencer Martin of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter break down this weekend’s Cyclocross World Championship events, starting with Mathieu van der Poel’s dominant victory en route to a sixth career world title, before speculating on how this will set him up for his looming Classics campaign, and where his CX career will go from here. They also discuss The Netherland’s dominance across nearly every category, including Fem van Empel’s supreme command of the Women’s side of the sport, Belgium’s multi-year absence from the top step of the podium in both elite races, and what we can learn about the future from the U-23, Junior and mixed Team Relay results.

    JB has incorrectly suggested a number of times that CX is on the rise in the USA. Like SM said, the golden years of CX here were 12-15 years ago and it has since retreated back to a very niche sport except for pockets in the NE and Wisconsin. Try to find a CX bike in a USA bike store (including a Trek which sponsors a major Euro tean), good luck.

      I think SM tried to explane that CX is becoming more popular for Kids, less so for adults.

      Gravel is where they're all going.....more money there, and the bike manufacturers agree. CX is niche....and lots of countries use it for training....not for a career. Being non Olympic doesn't help.

      CX is still very strong in the NW - multiple, large race series in the NW (especially in Portland and Seattle) Clara Honsinger for example, is from Oregon. Too bad she wasn't even mentioned here...

      All it will take is to make CX a big sport in a few states with the right degree of shitty winter weather and over time it become part of the culture of the state with young kids getting into it early then the US could compete on the world stage vs the Netherlands and Belgium.

    Fem Van Empel is MVP female version

      Hmm, I'm not sure about that; MvdP is the full package. Fem has a massive engine, but is technically limited.....go and see her MTB World Cup races......

    FYI Mr Spencer Martin, The top USA finisher was not Eric Brunner, but Clara Honsinger. Place 8th in the women's elite starting from the 3rd row and being in 25th position in the first lap. Van Emple is lucky its not a 2 hour race...Go Clara Honsinger, USA National CX Champion. Cheers!

      Actually Vida Lopez de San Roman was the top USA finisher. She was 6th in the woman junior race.

      How are you guys watching racing like the cyclocross WC now in the US?

  • @charlesrambeau519
    @charlesrambeau519 7 місяців тому

    You guys just keep making the show better and better all time, covering the off season, smaller races, womens races, hot news, legends interviews etc etc. Love the show!

  • @BLachance75
    @BLachance75 7 місяців тому

    Maybe it’s me being crazy but these shows are unlistenable due to the giant gasps for air that JB makes when he talks. I don’t know if different mics would fix it or if it can be fixed in editing but man is it annoying.

    Richard Groenendaal was WC in 1998 for sure, not in the juniors, in the pro's. Albert became 2 times WC in the pro's.

    I’d also add that Zoe Backstedt was as impressive in the U23 women’s race as MVDP or Fem van Empel. You only need to see how she carried her bike over the planks, up on the shoulder, pedals correctly aligned for remounting when most of the rest of the field were dragging their bikes over the barriers

  • @MattSwain1
    @MattSwain1 7 місяців тому

    It’s got to be said if anyone tuned into these CX world champs as their first taste of CX then I’d definitely forgive them for concluding it was boring. Unfortunately none of the U23 or elite races were exciting because the respective winners of each of the events were just so much better than everyone else on the day. CX can be a lot more exciting than that but this particular championship isn’t one that will live long in my memory. Fair play to the winners, their job is to win, not to entertain and why take the risk of leaving it to the last lap if you can destroy the field on lap 1!!!

    It would be great to see The Move cover more CX races, both domestic and international. It has a huge fan base worldwide, and is only growing here in the states. Let's see more cross guys!

      MTB deserves more coverage than CX....It's a far bigger sport, but gets ignored.
