Potting up a Phalaenopsis Keiki // Separating a baby Orchid from its Mother!

- I've taken in this No ID phalaenopsis to separate as phalaenopsis spike keiki (baby plant) from it's mother and potting them up separately.
It's obvious that this keiki is literally draining the life out of the mother plant, so if we don't separate them, we will likely lose the mum. This may be the perfect opportunity to propagate this orchid and create 2 plants from one.

I live in an area that is not ideal for orchids and a friend gave me one. I have been looking for help and I have always had the same answer to just separate it and pot them separately and when asking how to do it I was mocked as I had no idea that the spikes were actually the roots. I have had a hard time finding an orchid pot and I will order them off the website in one of your previous videos. This video helped me so much and I am extremely grateful to find it. I have a lot of plants however they are all local and I have hundreds of other babies that are much easier to plant and give them a separate pot. I am hoping that they will be able to survive in a different type of pot until I can get the plastic orchid pots that they need. Thank you for being thorough and explaining every step.

I love orchids , though I do not have any, any more. I did learn some things, that I didn't know. I would love to see photo's of them, when they do flower again. Omg I’m so glad I found your video I was concerned about my phalaenopsis orchid because it has been done flowering for a few months and just a couple weeks ago I noticed something growing on the two flower spikes it has and I also thought it was weird that the spikes never dried up and then I saw your video and it was like wow my orchid has babies growing on it 😮 because I always thought you had to live were there natural pollinators live or grow them in a laboratory to get babies, but I never in my wildest dreams thought a orchid did it spontaneously it’s the first time for me and it’s fascinating ☺️ thank you for the knowledge and the very helpful video ❤️❤️❤️

Aloe vera is the main ingredient in all plant growth hormone products, blend with distilled water, strain and spray all your plants and watch the root growth and keiki's form 😀👌
Thanks for a very nice video. One of my orchids had 3 keikis that I had to separate and plant separately. I separated them, when they had 3 small leaves and 3 roots that were much shorter than yours. I was afraid that if the roots get longer, it will be really hard to put them in the pot. 🌸 Your orchids are very pretty 💚💜

I have a new one starting, so I look forward to trying your method. Also, I have wondered about using Seasol, but I am not sure of the ratio. Can you help with that, please.
So it's okay to separate and repot when it's going to flower? My mother plant is doing fine, but it has TWO keikis that I just noticed are growing flower spikes. They only have one and two 5"ish roots respectively. I do want them to flower, but I'm now thinking I should get them off of here before they get like the one you have there.

Great education! I have 2 basal kieki's, now, and so far, cannot see any space connection to cut. They don't have good roots so I'm not in any rush to separate. I kinda think that unless you particularly want to propogate, or unless one plant is suffering.... keeping basal keiki's might be nice to create a bushier plant, multiple spikes :)

Good luck, remember, if it doesn't come off the old flower stem easily like mine, just pot it with about an inch of the spike still attached. Seal the ends with a little cinnamon. Should be fine.
I have a plant with 3 keiki and they are all budding and flowering...should I wait until the flower fall off to separate from the mother plant? My mother plant has always has lots of aerial roots too!
If my orchid is blooming and is in this state, very overgrown in pot as well as has a keiki, is it safe to repot?
Mine has on the plant and two of them and orhcids not even orhcids dicotyledonous. Same happened to my lillies, well, they gave me an answer for my questions.
So I have like 10 babies growing do I wait until it blooms or is it attached to the plant this is my first time

Great video Deanna. I recently purchased a Dtps orchid which was advertised as fully grown but not in flower. When it arrived it had the remains of a flower spike in the crown. I believe that when a phal spikes from the crown it is terminal and more often than not the plant will die. However, I don't known anything about the growth habits of Dtps orchids and it did occur to me that perhaps they grow like a Paphiopedilum, throwing up a spike from the centre of the new fan and then eventually the fan will die off and other new fans will grow. I am not getting any response from the nursery which supplied it...rather disappointing. Please can you shed any light on this?🌞
Could it do this from the top? I ask bc mine did but it never disconnected with that long shoot. So it’s not mono anymore.

Perfect! Just what I needed to see. One of my orchids has 3 keikis growing on 2 flower spikes. Now the keikis each have 2 flower spikes growing as well as the mother plant has a new flower spike. What I'm wondering is when should I separate the keikis? They have plenty of long roots. Now that they are spiking, should i wait til they're through blooming to cut them?
Sorry, this reply is very late! I think you can wait as long as the mother plant looks healthy. If the mother plant looks like it's struggling, you should probably separate and repot, but no need to cut the spike. These orchids are both alive a year an a half later and doing well (never did get around to returning to my mother in law! lol) . And the keiki spike continued to bloom last year. If the phal is repot well, they usually don't show too much signs of stress.
@@OrchieDee I have a grocery store orchid that bloomed nicely on two branches coming from one spike. Then, before that was even done flowering, we noticed leaves sprouting from one of those flower branches. And before we knew it, that growth (I had no idea what it was, now of course I know it's a keiki) had developed its own flower spike, which had a whopping 6 flowers. Before that was done, the keiki was already growing a new spike, which got 3 flowers, and now it has another spike with an unbelievable 7 flowers. All the while, the mother plants looks great and healthy (just has a sunburnt spot on one leaf). I had been told at one point I should wait until the flowers are done before separating the keiki - but it has been flowering non-stop!

I have a keike on my phalonopsis,it isn't showing any signs of aerial roots, what do I do I already had a flower spike from that and two other flower spikes from the mother plant all around the same time

It's funny, when you have the baby in a bigger pot then the mother. However is that not what we want in life be it plant life or human life that our children are bigger, taller then we are.:) Love the video. Great info in how to remove a Keiki and how to repot it. Thank you and enjoy your weekend.

Gotta love those keikis! Wanting to bloom like the little upstarts they are 🤣 based on my hit / miss success with phals in SH, I snipped the keikis off when their roots were long enough and plonked them straight into the self watering set up. Little blighters tried to spike but I snipped those off too... I’m stubborn about the self watering set up with phals 😬 if the mother plants don’t make it, the little ones will, now that they’ve never known anything else 😬 love me some keikis! Good to ‘see’ you again 🌸

Can I use an orchid fertilizer to soak my keiki when I transplant instead of the seaweed fertilizer?
I would advise against fertilising straight away. The seaweed solution / superthrive is not so much fertilizer as hormones to encourage growth. The roots can be a little sensitive after repotting until they establish again so I usually avoid fertilizing for a couple of weeks after repotting.
I read a keiki is a sign of the plant’s bad health. I have a phalaenopsis that looks healthy, plenty of green stiff leaves. Please advise

Yasss.. love me my herbs. They sell them at our supermarket like that now. So $3 for potted herbs and we get fresh basil on our homemade pizza ☺️

Yes, I have my vandas outdoors now. They are grown mostly in inorganic - lava rock.
I need Help, my phalaenopsis rotted ON TOP , is that mean she dead, can I still revive my plants...its blooming n onE day all the leaves turn yellow...Help ME please..
That's crown rot, it usually means your orchid is doomed since it's the only place where it can form new leaves. There are videos online that show how to stop crown rot but almost always the mother plant will die but if you stop it in time the mother plant will produce a keiki to carry on genetics. If it is flowering though it will focus on the flowers instead of making a keiki in hopes of being pollinated.
what if my keiki does not have any roots, it looks like it’s just growing new leaves where the roots should be. the mother plant died so i had to take the keiki off without any roots :(
Mine was just leaves for ages and then roots appeared all of a sudden. I'm not sure there's enough for separating yet.
Here I am half way through the process myself and my husband refuses to keep the house above 62° F at night to save on heating costs. Do you think that should be okay?
Hi, for a freshly repotted plant, they do appreciate the root zone being a little warmer. You could purchase a seedling heat mat off amazon. At the end of the day, plants are fairly reslient and if it's a more mature plant, as long as it doesn't drop too much below 62F (16C) it should be ok :) . Give it good bright warmer conditions during the day.

nice video ! i like vids about keiki's because they are small like seedlings which is what i have mainly in my collection now! so it's inspiring to me :) just a question : do you think its good to repot orchids because roots in nature never get repotted and when they do it's usually a sign that it fell to the ground. In which case they as a result never survive? i always have to put my chids in 80% humidity to avoid killing them to be blunt. i dont think i'll ever repot orchids again instead i will just up-pot them. In the case of a keiki , of course you have no choice!! i know a lot of yputubers do repottings and tutorials and i don't mean to say it's bad, but i lost soooo many orchids as a beginner not considering this fact at all about orchids.
Hey hun. I don't think you can compare an indoor potted setup to nature really. In nature roots are free attach themselves to live trees and mosses, and are exposed to lots of air, flushed regularly with rain.. new roots can easily attach to new media. Unfortunately depending on the potted setup, things can go stale. Media degrades and the roots that die off in the pot and other accumulated organic matter don't get flushed through adequately. AND it's a closed environment. Which means especially if you have a setup like mine that contains sphagnum, it does require repotting. In some circumstances it's certainly more beneficial than others, but if there is a high proportion of sphagnum, I will replace it. And the evidence is in a lot of my sphagnum heavy pots .... that respond almost immediately to repotting with fresh new media. Having said this, I'm not against upotting either in the right circumstances. And when you need to upgrade to a bigger pot and the media is still ok, I tend to do that. I'm also a LOT more gentle with my cattleya repottings now, and remove the old moss and dead roots I can see, but aim for minimal root disturbance where I can. @@OrchieDee true , you really cant compare it . i just lost over 30 orchids , granted some of them were infected with the purple ring of death and some came to me bare rooted,:) i repotted them under that premise. oh well im going to try my new idea and see if it works. have you ever seen bumblebee's channel? in my opinion from what i see she doesnt have that many repotting vids. ti always wondered why .. im beginning to like her method a lot. in any case im going to see if my hypothesis works. i may be totally wrong ! lololol For your catts id love to watch it , i recently watched Aan AOS webinar on culture of cattleyas and they even mention being careful with their roots . i guess it goes for species and novelty catts ! take care stay safe, loved the reply you gave. xoxo

Don't feel bad!! Honestly, I think we might have got this one just in time too. And we still have to wait and see how it handles the repot/transition. Will do updates on them in a month or so :)
