I love plants but I have always stayed away from orchid because I always thought they were hard to take care of but thanks to your videos I have been very successful with my orchids :) I went from having one to 15 in just a month 😅😂
I've been growing orchids for several years now and still find this video very useful for helping clarify the differences between orchid types. Well done!
Thank you, Danny, for another excellent video. After 10 years of growing orchids, I sometimes feel like a beginner. There’s no substitute for experience and yet there is still so much to learn. Your videos are always helpful. 🌺
@@EccentricNature I know I’m about 2 years too late but I have to agree, I’ve been growing orchids for over 20 years but now that we have UA-cam etc I feel a bit like a novice all over again. So much to learn, so little time to do it.
Fabulous video. So helpful for those of us who, as my friend used to say, know just enough to be dangerous, lol! I saved this one to my orchid board on Pinterest. Now I'm waiting for the video I requested about how you keep so many varieties in one grow room all requiring different watering, lighting, heat, fertilizing and dormancy times. I'm "growing" my grow room and I'm sure others would find this useful as well. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Today I went to Walmart, and found an orchid on clearance, no flowers but came to this video to be able to identify what I have...well I went through the video...and I believe I have a dendrobium phalaenopsis...as you described the cattleya and this one, I believe the d.p. is what I have. I brought it home, and drenched it under the sink because it was so brittle and dry and I knew the poor thing needed water...I placed her outside along my rescued phalaenopsis...now it's about 6 hrs since I watered it and immediately everything that was dry is now alive...I do have a dead cane and a second one also but will go to your videos to see what I have to do to rescue this distressed plant. There is some yellowing, at the tip and one from the beginning of the leaf...the root system is white and they're all sticking outside. I could not read the label but in just a few hours this plant has come alive...I am in Miami, Fl so we have hot weather, and it rained today but they are on the window sill outside on my terrace. Thank you so much for the explanations to these plants...I want to see if I can go back and rescue some more...but in the meantime, need to check out your video and I already see one...
Hi Danny. I love this series. Even though I've been raising orchids for 6-7yrs now I still consider myself a novice/hobbiest. I have a micro-den that has never bloomed for me but after following your advice and adventures I moved it to leca sw and low and behold it's blooming! Please keep doing there kind of "beginner's vids. I still learn so much! Thank you Rowan
@@EccentricNature I switched all my orchids. The phals, psychopsis, Cattelays, cimbidiums, oncidiums, dens, especially my sharry baby, although I had switch to bark for the Charles Fitch (it hated the leca). My catasetum isn't doing well in bark so I may switch it to the leca setup also my neo finitia (the spaghnum degraded in about 4mos in the sw setup, so I'll try the leca with it). I'm in Oklahoma and my setup has overhead lights I found on Amazon. Except for the cattleys and dens all of them stay inside when it's warm enough to put them outside, above 65 degrees. Also buying bark for all my orchids was costing me $18 for a 1gal bag and I need at least 4-5 to transplant all of them once a year. It cost me about $18 for a 10 liter bag and the leca can be used over and over by boiling it. I love that it doesn't degrade. I bought an extra bag bc I know I'll be buying more orchids asap when it's warmer and doing the same setup on my bar. Lol, can never have enough orchids!
@@rowand2263 You're lucky that way, in England there's no way I can keep them outside. I have thought about doing leca, but I haven't heard enough about how it works with phalaenopsis yet. I have 4 that need repotting this year.
@@EccentricNature phals love the leca. Can't go wrong. Mine are in self watering pots as well. Talk about low maintenance! Just sit back and enjoy them! Unless the need to "Po up" in 3-5yrs ,you won't need to worry about them. I put mine in pots with an inside measurement of 7" so they'd have room to grow. They've got great roots growing and have acclimated to leca without skipping a beat.
Hi Danny, a video about identification of oncidium type orchids with and without blooms would be really interesting. They look confusingly similar and are mostly sold simply as cambrias. Thanks for making these videos, I really enjoy watching them!
I love the idea for this video!! Awesome! For the last 3 years I have learned everything I know about orchids from you. I started by looking for help for my sick new phal and was hooked. Now I have a modest and varied collection. Thank you so much for all you teach us about this wonderful hobby!
I absolutely love watching your videos, you're so educational and your voice is very very soothing. I can't deal with so many UA-camrs or their video but I can happily share, watch from start to end and rewatch
Another great video, Danny! Learnt so much from it 🌸💮 I agree with you, when I see a "discounted" orchid, I just want to save it. Just saved a phal this past weekend. I want to nurture it back to bloom...Not always successful but I try 😉
VERY helpful! thank you. I bought, at discount because it was done flowering, an orchid that I thought was a cattelya...and I posted on FB asking for help. The administrator kicked me out because he said it wasn't a catt LOL... he was not helpful, just kind of rude so I took myself out of that group. However, after watching your video, I now believe it is a dendrobium, it has one long spike with no flower and a new spike with several leaves coming along. When I brought it home, the old spike had a couple of nice leaves but they turned yellow and fell off. This new spike has very healthy leaves on it. No idea what color it is but it will be fun to find out! LOL
Oh nooo sorry to hear that happened :(( honestly sometimes Catts and Dendrobiums can look very similar! The good thing is they take very similar care, so even if you think it's a Cattleya and turns out to be a Denphal, the culture would still be adequate! ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you, I was a bit shocked at the reaction. I'm in two other gardening groups and never seen anyone act like that! LOL Anyway, I watched your video and I'm sure it's a Denphal I guess we are calling them. I've got a pretty good green thumb and have several phalans....(sp lol) and they are doing very well. But I'm excited to grow orchids that might have a scent. I recently acquired the Denphal which is doing great, and today I received the green "golf" one and a "cleo". I'm very excited and looking forward to your videos teaching me more!!
Hi Danny. Talking about fragrant phals just recently purchased a mini (?) phal variety, Lui's Cute Angel is in bloom and gosh is fragrant. It is of sweet honeydew and quite room filling scent early in the morning. I just watched a ton of your videos. I'm trying to find out what I have. I think it's the osmoglosum pulchellum orchid. I haven't seen a flower in 4 years. I'm going to repot it and replace what it's in.
Mine is a mix breed that was given to me as a gift from school due to being in the orchid club throughout all of high school... after 4 year it’s finally started to bloom but the flowers have yet to open and even then when I search the web to find an orchid that is even a tad similar i hit a brick wall and because it has been so long since then I kind of could really use some help with identification
I almost gave up hope because it didn’t like it’s new environment where I had to deal with pests and rotting once that problem was dealt with I was faced with it outgrowing it’s pots faster then the norm meaning I’d have to change them every few months still no buts until 2 months ago and now they won’t flower even though they should have.

Hello Dany! I love your videos and insta, thank you so much for your content and passion for orchids. In the first orchid that you show there are some whitish stains on the leaves, mine also have those, what are they? are they harmful for my orchids? Greetings from Colombia :)
We have several orchid nurseries within two or so hours of our home here in Virginia in the US. Going to visit two more of them Saturday.
