I had wanted a GSD for 20 years. Read a lot, binged training videos, bought the perfect puppy course, found great breeders who love what they do and are devoted to the breed. Brought my Whiskey girl home at 8 weeks old, last year. Western showline. She is absolutely amazing! She is confident, yet gentle. Super smart. Loves trailing(tracking) and playing ball. Great with my three kids. I am blown away. I love her so much. 🥰🐾

@RaulGarcia-cg3vn show lines are not working lines and their protective instincts are less than working lines. They can be trained for protection but it will take a bit more work to achieve. I personally love working line German Shepards especially when my kids were young my girl herded my kids til they were about 7 after that it was play chase play unless a stranger came by then it was guard alert protect. Now that my kids are all grown I wanted a less energetic breed but German Shepard are still one of my favorite breeds

Long time Shepherd owner here. Also West German show/pedigree line. When you find the RIGHT breeder, who breeds for the love of the breed and is dedicated to breeding for temperament, health and type, you won't go wrong. I've had multiple breeds over 30+ years of owning dogs. Absolutely nothing like a Shepherd. Nothing.

@thepupmommy I loved all my shepards but as I'm getting older and not as active I choose a Neopolitan Mastiff this time and this breed is protective like a shepard on steroids stubborn but a velcro dog I can't get more than 3 feet from him without him running to my side and cuddly without the shedding

I loved having German Shepards when my kids were growing up. They keep up with the busy kids lifestyle and love having kids around. The bonus is they do protect when needed and are not that hard to train. Big cuddlers just shy around fireworks and thunderstorms. My girl liked to hide in her covered kennel during storms and my boy hid under my bed.

We got a working strain golden retriever during the pandemic. So we couldn't go and visit him. Once we paid the deposit, the breeder regularly sent us videos of the puppy.
Now he is a beautiful boy who will bark or growl at us if he wants to play. He will nudge us with his nose if he needs to go outside to do his business.
But he will also snuggle into us and fall asleep.
We have 4 golden retrievers and have had this breed since the mid 1990s. I remember each dog we have had.
Got to admit that I prefer them to people.
    Take care and best wishes

Any tips for the barking? Mine is 3mo and is in his curious and defiant phase, went I limit him going on the shower for exemple and try many times and if it’s not successful and barks complaining lol I don’t want to encourage since I live in an apartment and don’t want to bother others BUT I also don’t want him to think that barking is bad, just that home is a place to chill and relax if you know what I mean.

    • @sfdf1979
      @sfdf1979 День тому +1

@@MA-xd9zl yours is very young, still. This is a breed meant to bark, so having realistic expectations is extremely important. Alongside teaching your pup functional obedience, you work on teaching a command for stopping behaviors. My command for stopping whatever my dog is doing is “leave it.” So that command can apply to many things: paying too much attention to another dog/person; sniffing/picking something up; barking. If you start with the easier things, like paying too much attention, sniffing, picking up a toy, your dog will begin to understand the general meaning of the command over time. When you start applying it to barking, it goes something like this: your dog barks at something, you either really check it out - look out your window, etc - or you fake check it out because you know what the cause of the barking is, you say “thank you, good boy/girl.” Then when your dog goes to continue barking, you interrupt it with a firm sound, like EH-EH, SSHHHHTTTT, followed by “leave it.” If the dog stops even for a second, tell them “good boy/girl.” Rinse and repeat this process for a couple years, and if you are truly consistent in applying this, as in ANY training you do, your dog will pick it up just fine. You will notice that, like any training, it will not be a linear process. You will see improvement over time, not perfection quickly. And you will see setbacks at certain ages, for example, adolescence. At that stage, your dog will often behave as if it’s been taught nothing. This is all normal. Do not expect quick results, otherwise you will frustrate yourself, and consequently, frustrate your dog and confuse them with trying to rush things. Just be consistent, patient and calm. You’ll be amazed with the adult dog you will end up with.

    • @MA-xd9zl
      @MA-xd9zl День тому

@@sfdf1979 I know he’s young, but I don’t want to reinforce you know? I’m not correcting him like an adult being stubborn cause I know he’s a baby still learning, so I want to teach him where he can play, bark and be a dog (also plan on teaching to bark on command to be sure he knows he’s free to do outside).
Oh so the leave it can work for that too, thanks ☺️
I already started to notice when he barks asking for something, he started to throw his water out and he stay with nothing to drink 🤦🏻‍♀️ so he started to give a bark for my glass. Things like that. But also started to bark when I don’t let him do something he wants and that’s what I don’t want, otherwise he will be a brat barking like a husky whenever he wants something he’s not allowed.
Overall I’m really happy with him even though it’s been only 2 weeks, just the fact that he only potty outside (number 2 at least) and sleep all night is a dream 😅 number 1 sometimes he’s playing and stops and pee, no sniffing, nothing so I think he can’t hold yet which is ok, most of the time he does is on the spot so.

Love to see how you manage the barking -- my guy is protective but doesn't understand the concept of the property line. Far too many people get a GSD because they are cute puppies, and beautiful adults. They don't bother to learn about all the work and attention they need in order to be emotionally and temperamentally healthy family members... so they dump them. Our local shelter always has dogs who are obviously full GSDs - That's where mine came from, and my Mom even has papers for her rescue Shepherd.

How exciting. I got my GSD 5 years ago. He is amazing and we do sooooo many things together. We hike, alot, we do Mantrailing, he is a Personal Protection Dog too, we recently started scent detection, I taught him to herd my flock of 5 chickens and his best friend is a cat. She fell in love with him the day she met him. She was a kitten at that tme, she saw him, ran up to him and immediately rolled between is huge legs. He was not sure what to make of this tiny kitty thing who was showing signs of really liking him when the older cats always whacked him. Anyway, he adores her just as much. He makes my life whole and makes me laugh every single day. I hope your new GSD addition will bring just as much fun and joy into your lives.

Congrats on your new puppy! I'm a long-time GSD owner and when it came time to choosing my puppies from the breeder, I did exactly what you did. I had a 5 month old GSD female, and decided to get her companion. Took her with me to the breeder, so that I could gauge her reaction. It went perfectly. Czarina and Olympia were together for over 12 yrs. before I lost them within 2-1/2 months of each other. Now have more Shepherds and two Bostons. Same drill. Worked with the breeder, told him I needed a Boston who could keep up with the GSDs. He described their personalities, and especially one, "a bulldozer". That's the one I took, and boy, was he ever right! She's the instigator behind everything that happens.
So, so important that you find a reputable, ethical breeder who breeds for termperament, health and breed standard. You won't be sorry.

My first canine I wanted was an Irish Setter but my landlord wouldn’t allow it so I got a cat.
I love Mastiffs .Wanted a French Mastiff during the time of popular movie Turner and Hooch. Initially thought it was really ugly dog but now I don’t 🤣
I later narrowed it down to what I recently got in July which is a Boxer. Many years later finally a canine in my life and pleased with my choice.
If I would get a smaller breed would be a Boston Terrier.

Both of their temperaments were amazing and calm. He talks a lot, very affectionate and loving. He gets on well with cats. We're lucky as he hasn't chewed or destroyed anything. He doesnt overly bark unless he does his patrol around the garden when he goes to the toilet. He's not lead reactive, friendly with dogs and people. I was never a dog person but my partner is and it was known from the start that if we get a house together we're getting a dog. So there went the breed choosing. I wanted the smallest possibility of allergy (I know it can happen anytime), my partner wanted a big and smart dog. So when we narrowed down, and even though he do loves GSDs, we ended with a dark silver standard poodle. Everyone that we know were like: "But a poodle?" thinking of them as froo froo dogs.
What people don't know that poodles are smart, reliable, goofy and also working dogs that can do so many things. And they don't lose fur. And our lady makes everyone stop in their tracks.
The research and waiting was worth it. She has been with us for almost two years and I wouldn't want any other dog.

how exciting! I'd love to know if there is a space where we can have a checklist of sorts of behavior to look out for when meeting the puppies. I've seen people do touch tests and such with the puppies but im not sure what exactly they look like / questions about the personality that we should ask. Sorry if this question is too vague! Looking forward to following this journey.

I'm so excited to see this unfold! I needed some puppy love so I followed these steps and chose my pup in June. I'm watching you religiously now that she is at the stage where her pittie stubbornness is showing up. I adore every second of her blooming personality, but good grief is she a handful. Thank you for helping me!😂😂😂💜

So excited for you Will!! GSD's are fantastic! I love my 3.5 year old GSD, although getting him was a WILD ride. His breeders came very highly recommended by a good friend of mine, however, because they were in their 80's, they were very concerned about COVID. As such, I wasn't able to visit the litter before picking my pup. The breeders sent 1 picture per puppy. I chose my boy because he looked like a little black teddy bear. That was the extent of the process for me. The first time I met my Grigio was the day I picked him up to take him home. He was 7 weeks old. While it worked out for me, I definitely DO NOT recommend getting a puppy this way 😅, especially a GSD. Really lucked out with my boy; he is very well trained and such a love bug.
Looking forward to seeing your journey with the new puppy!!...I'd recommend investing in a very good vacuum 🤣...They don't call them "German Shedders" for nothing!! As for the barking, my boy only barks when he hears something out of the ordinary. But we live in a fairly quiet neighborhood...He does love to chase deer though 🙃

It is not weird to never get the same breed. I feel exactly the same. That said, it is a significant learning curve to swing to an unknown group.
I veered from the herding group to the gun dog group!

    I can't say I got to pick. I wish I could have!
We rescued a Chiweenie. She was left in a car at 5 weeks old to perish.
My daughter asked me, "Mom, wanna new best friend?"
Now she's 4 months old, absolutely horrible on a leash. (My sons fault). She loves him, ofc, not me. (I work weird hours).. And still nips at him. I taught him how to get her to stop bitting, but he won't do it.
    It's all very frustrating.

I did the pre-puppy picking steps here in the US but could not find a breeder that would let me meet the parents or puppies before pick up date. I think I got a good dog with all the health checks and genetic testing done on the parents but I was very disappointed that I could not compare the litter mates and parents.

Thank you for clarifying how to buy a puppy. There are so many puppy mills and backyard breeders. Puppy mills especially put the momma dogs in horrific situations. Please do you research before buying a puppy 🙏 let's put these bad breeders out of business

My GSD puppy is now 5 months old and I'm looking forward to getting some tips from you. I had the same doubts on the breed before getting him. The hair and being mouthy. My pup is not too bad for being mouthy. I don't have any where near the experience that you have but you have helped me through a lot. He is now getting a but reactive. I'm also disabled with one good side from multiple strokes. I do take him for long walks while I drive my mobility scooter. However, my mobility scooter had broken down right around the time of getting him at 8 weeks old. I just socialized him with my neighbors French bulldogs so I know he's not aggressive. I believe he's fearful and not that confidence. I don't think he looks to me as the pack leader and that's my other struggle. He has issues with getting too excited. I've been trying to do the best I can with what I have. I wish I had more money so I could get the outside help thar I need.

We lucked out finding our breeder last September. 10.5 hour drive for us. Our trainer who trains GSD’s and Malinois almost exclusively for Police work, told us we hit the jackpot with genetics for this male GSD. Having gotten him to be a companion to our aging pit bull/lab (❤), she’s just older and slowing down a bit, and we are letting her live her lazy life however she sees fit. But now we have this incredible German Shepherd who needs a mate. Having become friends with the breeder, we found out Mom and Dad are having another litter. We got pick of the litter (super cool experience!). Much like green collar was correctly defined as your perfect fit, the dog suggested for us stole my heart instantly. He was perfect. We spent hours with the puppies, and I couldn’t choose between the male and another female. Male was my ultimate perfect temperament in every way, no way I could leave without him. But a female was pulling at me, too! Phenomenal. I’d never had a female GSD. I figure a female would balance out 2 males. So now we have two 8 week old German Shepherds. Today is day 6 at our house and they are wonderful. Our other dogs took to them instantly and they are having a blast on the dog farm. Never would’ve thought I’d have 3 GSD’s but I love training them. So smart. So sweet. So driven. Zero anxiety with these 3. Anyway, all this to say I love you chose this breed and I’ll follow his journey for years to come!
