Dogs used weaponized cuteness to domesticate humans.
Jokes aside, I think dogs need to be acknowledged as a unique case. No two species interact, live together, work together and communicate like humans and dogs. They are genuine friends and adopted family. They are partners. And that partnership has been ridiculously successful. Both species are far better off together. This is still true, from the paleolithic to the 21st century..
The human/dog relationship is unique on this planet. Dozens of millennia together in bonds of love and friendship.
This I seriously propose a separate legal category for dogs. They are NOT typical domesticated animals... Or even pets really. This is a much older and deeper bond. They are humanity's partner and true friend.
All I propose is that we acknowledge that.

Will you yell at your partner when they do what's their instinct do to protect their territory?
Will you decide what you teue friend can do and what its can't?
      Dog are domestic animal.
We kept the cutest and abandon the less useful. More of 70 % of dogs are now wild dog, trying to survive in cities.
It's true that's a unic bond btw dog and human. But its still a relation btw a master and donesticed animal
The only bound where the other animal kept a bit of its freedom is cat/human relationships.

You know in a time of asinine political and gender confused movements, your argument towards reclassification of dogs from pet to "Companion" should be serious considered. It would indeed be better for both of us if they were treated equal to humans and thus people getting dogs to be chained up as a yard accessory would be criminally charged and if you didn't pick up your dog/childs feces you'd be charged with child neglect. I would even go as far as making it mandatory that your dog is behaved enough to walk off leash and that the use of a leash is considered Companion cruelty unless used in dangerous situations.

I've had many dogs, a number of them Golden Retrievers. I had one in particular (sadly gone at only ten from bone cancer), who was a naturally born therapy dog, no training required at all. He pretty much forced me into visiting drug rehabs and retirement homes with him, because it was what he was born to do. He could pick people out of a crowd who needed comfort from him. One example (of many I could give): heading back to the car at the end of an outdoor concert, he kept lagging behind, looking back into the crowd. I assured him the show was over, it was time to go home...but he plunked that big unbudgeable butt down, refusing to move, looking back behind us. A man caught up with us, and said, "Can I please pet your Golden Retriever? My mother had Goldens, now they're all gone, and so is she." Somehow, that precious boy knew the man was coming.
He was a big boy, 118 pounds, all big fluffy mane and silky dark gold fur, kids buried their faces in that mane. His eyes were something else, chestnut brown, open, trusting, loving. He had bushy eyebrows, set higher than most, and could raise and lower them independently...honestly, the most expressive face I've ever seen on a dog...wish I could post a photo. He was a smart boy, but such a big doofus, and behaved perfectly every place but at home. He had a special affinity for kids and people in wheelchairs; he'd plant that unbudgeable butt next to them and I was there for the duration.
I miss that boy deeply. All my dogs have loved me, but Rowdy loved everyone. He had so much more comfort and love to give to hurting people, and that stupid cancer robbed him of time to give it. He was a gift.

@YourPalKindred Rowdy's mom was a rescue, 6 years old when we saw the "free or she goes to the pound" ad. Her owner's new wife claimed Kelly might hurt their newborn...ridiculous, she was a very sweet girl, never any problem. As soon as the idiot dropped her off, she clung to my door crying and peeing blood, so off to the doctor we went. We piled her into the car with a couple other dogs and had a long ride with snacks before her appointment...she was so happy! Turned out she had huge bladderstones and an infection, needed surgery. She also had nails so long they curled under, and impacted fur between her pads; neglected for maybe a year, we think.
I sure didn't plan on breeding her, but my 10-month-old male Golden realized she was in heat before I did, I'd been told she was spayed and had shots (but no proof). Fortunately, there were only two puppies, and we gave one to a family that had recently lost their elderly Golden; the pups were eight weeks old on Christmas Eve, the family was overjoyed.
We always said Rowdy was a gift to us for rescuing his mother and giving her a loving home for the rest of her life. When we lost Rowdy, his father was inconsolable. Two weeks afterwards, I found him sitting on the last spot Rowdy had lain in the house, wailing a high, thin, pathetic howl. He loved his boy.

i have a husky and foster huskies and they lose their minds if they are alone…my husky would attach himself to me if he could…if he can’t see me at the dog park, he starts frantically looking everywhere and then if i call him he immediately bolts to me. They have all been super pack oriented, I know dogs are individuals but having had tons of huskies in my house, ALL of them have wanted to be together…they don’t demand constant pets like a golden retriever might, but they want to be with you all the time.

I have a half Alaskan malamute half German shepherd, and he's exactly like this. We got him when he was 3, and I don't think the original owners ever left him alone as a puppy, he just always had someone around the house. Well come to find out when I left him alone at home for the first time, he did not like that at all. Destroyed my front door trying to look for me lol. Now if I have work or something I just take him over to the nice old lady that lives across the street from me and he hangs out with her, thank god cause doggy daycare gets expensive! I mostly just bring him with me on errands now, literally like a child. I'd say it's worth it, he's a very loyal dog.

Every parent/caregiver thinks their own babies are the most cutest/beautiful babies they have ever seen❤ what makes dogs special to me, is the special bond we humans can have with a dog. Some dogs are cuter than others. Its sad to see a cute puppy adopted into a family, but then when the dog gets bigger and less cute they get neglected or yelled at. We need to commit to a Pet for their entire lifetime, not just the cute stage❤

Someone who finds all babies cute is more the exception than the norm. This makes evolutionary sense in the harsh, resource-limited world of our caveman ancestors, where finding others babies ‘cute’ risks compromising the ability of a parent to care for the survival of their own babies, if they also feel the pull of caring for the cute babies of others.
Finding all dogs cute is easier, as they can more quickly contribute to the survival of the human and require less human care in order to survive. The evolution of the strictly companion lap dog of today is a function of the evolution of our modern society, where the living is easier, with more abundant resources to share with them.

It's not just about the size of the eyes themselves, it's about the pupil to eye ratio. Our pupils dilate when we see something/someone we love. So our brains automatically associate dilated or bigger pupils or in case of reptiles their entire eye (since it is black and looks like a pupil from a distance), with an expression of friendliness. That's why we find birds, reptiles, rodents and even spiders cute in some cases, because of their higher pupil to eye ratio, despite their eyes being small. Dogs dilate their pupils when they do the puppy face. Same with kids.

Forty-plus years ago, it was already an established and recognized fact that all mammals share basic features when they are young to help them survive, even among other mammals. Mostly, during the pre-pubescent stage (child, kitten, puppy, etc.), all mammals have larger eyes and ears compared to their skulls because these are fully developed in utero, plus they have smaller mouths, a different smell (lack of pheromones) and they cry when in distress. This was established long ago. It explains why we are drawn to kittens, puppies and other baby animals. Also, how some babies have managed to survive in the wild. It was nature's way of helping if something happened to their moms. Because, goodness knows, dad wouldn't step in.

When I fostered an injured puppy a few years back, I had to study dog body language so that I could tell what she needed or wanted. I guess it makes sense if a lot of it is in the eyes for them, since I'm autistic. Even when I look back at photos of my beautiful and dearly loved now-departed cats of ten or twenty years ago, my eyes are drawn more to their surroundings than their faces. My one theory about why is that many animals hit a specific kind of supernormal stimuli in humans. They have all the traits of "cuteness" in babies, but much more exaggerated.
Some people don't find babies cute at all, but do with animals. Maybe then cuteness and babies aren't related at all, maybe cuteness has a completely different trigger and babies only sometimes manage to hit it. I have no idea what that "trigger" would be in that case.

@@yggbeats5759Why NOT compare dogs with humans? If I say diamonds are stinking hard, chalk not so much, I’m comparing two different things in relation to hardness. What in that comparison says anyone can’t have both?
It’s irritating how fast people are to react without taking time to reason 🙄

Wolves look cute too, how do you explain that? Also cats! Why are they cute? Why even panthers and lions are cute?

Domestic goats also have floppy ears and pie bald coats. I wonder if this is why.

A puppy is always cuter than a human larvae.

The thing that puzzles me is that cuteness extends far wider in the animal kingdom than just dogs/puppies. For example young deer are also very cute. Did wild life also evolve traits in young animals to trick us into not harming them and leaving them alone?

U know what’s the better way to survive and pass on your genes to humans, just evolve to be cute, the cuter u r the more chances of passing your genes 😅
