I think Deathclaws have some kind of crocodilian DNA in them, explainign the scute types, the musculature of the tails, the back ridges, large teeth, etc. And I think they've got some kind of mammalian DNA, explaining defined head features such as brow, nose, snout, and forward-facing eyes, as well as intelligence, limb structure, the leaner body with more defined hips and rib cage.
I also like the idea that the beefier, more reclusive deathclaws seen in Fallout are more akin to how deathclaws evolved in the wild, as megafauna hunters, whereas the lankier deathclaws seen in game 3 and New Vegas are more akin to those the Master claims to have furthered developed, being more a kind of ferocious pack hunter, better able to surround and wipe out groups of human infantry.

@@GritimoTheOdd I don't really care tbh, they clearly have a lot of traits that are not just hap-hazard genetically engineered distortions of chameleons, their deign is clearly inspired by other animals, and if you wanted to genetically engineer something, you would start by lifting genes from other animals. What else would you do, run a computer program that tries out random gene combinations and tries to simulate what the proteins they code for would do? If they have crocodile tails and scales, a mammal face, bird talons, the simplest explanation is that there is something of those critters in there. I will assume that they are hybrids until Bethesda definitively comes to my house and says they're not, at which point I will just get mad, and decide I am right and Bethesda are just wronger now that they've doubled down on it. Or they can redesign them to actually look like malformed chameleons, at which point I'll at least accept that's what they are, as silly as it would be.

They spawn in max 2 at a time. Another issue is how slow they are (and how they constantly stop to throw dirt at you), if you have decent agility and aren't using a mobility restricting weapon, you can easily outrun the F:4/76 Deathclaws. Combined with the horrible weapons/armour progession, and they becometrivialto deal with once you have any experience. Whereas, unless you cripple their legs, you aren't out running any of the other games Deathclaws.

Okay, isn't it canon that the Vault 13 Colony of Intellectually enhanced Deathclaws survive the Enclave? If you destroy the Enclave soon enough, they don't wipe out the Deathclaws and I believe that ending was made canon. Also, even if they got wiped out, there was one survivor of the Colony that is your companion while your out adventuring, and that Deathclaw breeding in other less intelligent variants of their kind would add some interesting genes to the gene pool.
Also, let it be added that there was a "Secret Service" Agent who had been experimented on (I cannot remember his name) turned into an absolute beast (he was so big they had to just fit pieces of an especially enlarged suit of X-01/2 Power Armor onto him for armor) and was so powerful he could kill a fully grown Deathclaw in one punch (in the ending to the game where the Vault 13 Colony of Deathclaws are wiped out, he leads the assault...) Let that sink in.
Edit: I also wish they had added to this video how the Deathclaws had saved a mother and child from a raider attack. A raider was just closing in on them, preparing to kill them or worse, when a giant, clawed hand reached form the darkness and tore him into pieces. The child and mother were even more terrified to find a pack of Deathclaws wiping out the raiders that had been killing them before realizing that the Deathclaw that had saved them was speaking to them, telling them they were safe, that nothing bad would happen to them now. The mother remained pretty scared of them (who wouldn't be...) but the child ended up loving them, it was cute... that would have been an amazing addition to this video.

I'm not afraid of nole rats. I'm not afraid of rad roaches. I'm not even afraid of super mutants. Deathclaws? Let's just say if I see or hear an OP deathclaw in the area I run as fast as I can in the opposite direction. Still it is my favorite mutant beast in the waste lands. If I were a raider I'd keep an arena fulled with death claws among other beasts to punish my rivals.

  • @IdleDrifter
    @IdleDrifter 2 роки тому +4

One deathclaw is easy enough to take take by a well equipped wastelander. Anti-material rifles, gauss rifles, or heavy duty energy weapons are preferred. However, a pack of deathclaws can prove to be a problem. Or being attacked while in the middle of a firefight with raiders can turn a bad situation into a nightmare. Worse still is an ambush in close quarters. In Fallout 1 and 2. Deathclaws are incredibly tough and never alone. Fallout 3 had easy mode on with the poison dart gun. New Vegas returned more to form of 1 and 2. Kill the bastards from a distance. Fallout 4 Deathclaws could be a problem if they caught you unaware. Fallout Tactics, though considered not canonical. The more intelligent subspecies of Midwestern Deathclaws could speak. Their high speed and sneak abilities made me choose my battles. Often forming my squad up into a firing line in front of a minefield. Weapons free. As the Midwestern Deathclaws could kill my squad quickly in close quarters.

I've never known a Deathclaw that couldn't be put down with a .308 round or a well placed shot from stealth by an Anti-Material Rifle. Carrying plenty of armor peircing rounds helps, but it isn't necessary. High or practically unassailable ground will help when dealing with Deathclaws but if you ever encounter one on more level ground, aim for the legs with a high caliber weapon. Slowing them down will help, but not guarantee, victory versus these hellspawn abominations.

Apparently, Deathclaws were originally conceptualized as mammalian creatures that were a cross between a brown bear and a wolverine. This was scrapped because the devs couldn't render their fur correctly, and so ended up using a rejected creature design from a different game, which became the Deathclaws we know today.
That said, it's interesting to note that *Fallout Tactics* featured Deathclaws that, in addition to being intelligent, were described as being mammal-like. Though, it should be noted that *Tactics* is considered non-canon by Bethesda... The same Bethesda that went on to include references to that game in both *Fallout 3* and *4.*
Assuming *Tactics* is at least partially canon, perhaps these creatures are descendents of a "prototype" race of Deathclaws that were created using the DNA of mammalian predators instead of that of reptiles.
All the more reason Bethesda should remake *Tactics* to fit into modern Fallout lore.
A fight between a devil lizard and roided up honey badger? Yes, please!

There is one race which is far far deadlier than any of the Deathclaw types, and that is the race known as Player Character. A single Deathclaw can devistate a settlement. But a player can walk into a Deathclaw nest and eliminate them all singlehandedly, and for what? Just that "shiny unique weapon" that is hidden inside somewhere.

I mean, you're probably joking but in most of the fallout games your character is canonically an at least somewhat nonstandard human. the hero of fallout 1 in particular grows to be straight up capable of tanking a mininuke to the face just like the toughest deathclaws and matching them strength for strength all while being a jack of all trades and master of many.
think supermutant capabilities but all packed into something still casually indistinguishable from a normal human.

The one thing I'm disappointed by regarding Deathclaw origins and physiology is the fact that they are descended from horned chameleons. Imagine a Deathclaw that had a ranged attack in the form of a barbed, extendable tongue that can pull you in range of its jaws and claws. Would have been a reaily crappy game mechanic (and glitchworthy beyond par due to Bethesda's stupidity) but it also would have been friggin badass.
