Civilization V Leader | Enrico Dandolo of Venice

  • Enrico Dandolo is today considered one of the greatest Venetian Doges. He took control of a mercantile power in decline, riven by corruption and inefficiency, challenged by great and small powers across the region. Trade had declined, and its military was moribund. By his death, he had ended all outside threats to Venice's influence, and made it the dominant power in Mediterranean trade again. Historians have referred to Dandolo as the "founder of the Venetian colonial empire." Venice itself would be prosperous, stable and secure for the next century.

Venice plays so differently from every other civ in the game. The reason they can't settle or annex cities is because historically speaking they never did either of those things. They were a city-state, not an empire. A very wealthy and powerful city-state, though.

Actually this is actually the modern Venetian dialect of Italian, rather than the formal Venetian language that was used as the standard literary language in the republic as well as the Central Mediterranean. It is mostly the grammar that makes this definitely Venetian Italian dialect rather the Venetian language.

It's a Tuscanized form of Venetian, quite typical for the 15th or 17th century Venitian elite, but probably quite anachronistic for the 12th/13th. But anything from that period would be a daring reconstruction.

I wouldn't say that Dandolo "took control of a mercantile power in decline, riven by corruption and inefficiency" with "declined" trade ad "moribund" military. Republic of Venice was rather going on in its constant and long rising, that with Dandolo had a drastic acceleration, transforming itself from a regional power to the most important power of Mediterranean by conquering Costantinople and acquiring a quarter and half of the Bizantine Empire. So, indeed, he was the founder of Venetian Maritime Empire. Thanks to it, after the long war with the Republic of Genoa for the control of Mediterrean (XIII-XIV century) and the expansion in Northern Italy (XV century), at the beginning of XVI century Venice became one of the most important world powers. And it was in that moment that its slow and magnificent decline started, when the biggest Europeans countries (France, Spain, Holy Roman Empire, plus Hungary, the Pope and most of Italian states) joined forces in the "Cambrai League" to definitely stop Venice. Despite that, Venice survived, maintaining its empire and in 1571 was at the guide of Holy League giving more than half of the Christian fleet (109 galleys and 6 new galleasses) in the famous and victorious battle of Lepanto against Turkish Empire, continuing then to guard and defend the South-Eastern border of Europe until 1797.

It isn't Venetian slang at all, he is speaking an entirely separate language called Venetian. It still exists in Italy but has been largely displaced by Italian. However, it is accurate for him to be speaking it because it would've been the majority language in the area at the time. Anyway, I imagine most Venetian slang is a result of intermixing between the languages, so for some "slang" to be present isn't surprising.

+Andreas Martonosy I agree. Venetian, Neapolitan, Lombard... aren't dialect of Italian. They were speaken before Italian was created. Italian was born as a language for literature. It's based on the Tuscan language. Even writers in XVI century spoke their regional language.
When Italy was formed, only the 15% of the "Italians" could understand Italian. The problem is that our languages aren't recognized as official languages.

    • @eccoeco3454

      This is idiotic
Venician come directly from latin from the venedii that fleed the venet coast to save thamself from barbaric invasion and pillages in later Roman Empire, venicians considerered thamself as romans and spoke standard latin as they lived in the Capital provincia of Italia and were declared Roman citizens already at the time of the republic.
The dissimilarities between standard italian and venician are due to the Seafaring way of Life of the venicians that made theirs somewhat of a Cosmopolitan idiom and that the language developed from latin differently from how it had in other places as similarly to how It went for any other dialect.
as if you knew anything of italian linguistics you would know that none of us really spoke italian,
we spoke the ancestors of what we today call dialects, regional idioms like tuscan flourentine, Neapolitan, genoese, marchigian, piedmontese, savoiard and so fourth and so on various languages that often had Little to do with the others apart being spawn (or partially spawn for some southern or greek influenced ones ) from latin, it was only thank to a long journey of compared linguistics and literature that standard italian was created and took root as similarly to German it's a built leanguage.
      All this to say
      Please mind your own business
      Saluti da Venezia!

I'm not saying it's Greek, god dang it. You have to look it up. Venetian is a Romance Language, not Gallo-Romance. it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingua_veneta

I'm half Austrian, even in english wikipedia it says "Typologically, Venetian has little in common with the Gallo-Italic languages of northwestern Italy, but shows some affinity to nearby Istriot." So it's not an Gallo-Romance one, it came from Vulgar like Italian.
