What i hated about civ 4 is how Forests are good while jungle is utter crap. If you have jungle surrounding you, you'd have a lot harder time.

India was occupied by the British in Ganhdi's time, maybe he learnt how to speak English.
Gandhi did know English. He may have learned it in school in India (British school system) and also studied in the West for a time.
So "alea iacta est" translates to ,,Prepare yourself for war. Our armies will stop at nothing, our navies will swarm your shores, for the glory of Rome." Really efficient use of language and I thought it was something about dice.
Though to be honest, when a Roman tells you something, and you yourself aren't Roman, it can pretty much be translated like that.

Your sense of sarcasm is non-existent.
Those phrases are not supposed to be translations though. They're simply a couple of words to decribe that you are now at war. They were like that in civ V as well.
Max Mustermann On a serious note though, it's incredible how time-efficient Latin is, compared with English for example. I've seen cases where direct translations from Latin to English take paragraphs, but the Latin itself is only a line or two. Not saying that this is the case in the cutscenes, that's not a translation at all.
I can't be the only one who loves how Catherine lapses into her native Italian when declaring war.

Barbarossa is speaking ancient german but I can still understand very well what he says and the subtitles are a completely different sentence than what he actually says.
This is true for all of the civ games. At least this game has pretty good voice acting.
All the ones i can understand had some flaws except english...but the degree varies, like the chinese one is rlly rlly not the same at all, while french and japanese are somewhat ok.
Some of them are ok-ish but Rome's one "Alea acta est" mean's "the die is cast".
It's what one of (then) general caesar's cohorts said to him when he crossed the rubicon, ignoring the order to relinquish command.

I'm Greek and I can say that Gorgo's (the female greek leader) subtitles are wrong. She is saying a known Thucydides' quote: "The strong nations are doing whatever they want and the weak nations forgive them"

They burst their asses to make all leaders female. I have nothing against female leaders but they can at least add ones that actually mattered such as Victoria or Elizabeth or Catherine or Maria Theresa and so on

translations are never 100% literal because if they were, English speakers couldn't understand the translations
It's the same in Civ 5. The 'subtitles' aren't meant to necessarily reflect what is being said in the leader scene.
I was about to comment that. I'm brazilian-spanish. Emperor Pedro's subtitles also have issues, but it is one of the most accurate ones in the game.

Ikr? I love it when they add little bits of information like that to what the characters are saying. It is not immediately obvious if you are not familiar with those languages, but for those that can hear the difference, it is like an easter egg hiding in plain sight!

@[The Red Studios] Even if Finland isn’t the strongest rival of Russia, they were still very clever with how they went about fighting seeing is how they had so little to use to their defense. They almost completely captured Moscow with Germany’s help. The funniest thing was that the U.S.S.R knew an invasion from Germany was gonna happen, yet they did nothing up until the very last minute. Finland wasn’t that strong military-wise, but they were much smarter than the Soviets with how they went about defense.

Victoria's declared-on line is the most intimidating thing I've ever seen in a Civ game. The way she says it, the way the fan crunches when she closes it... cripes. The most threatening thing is when there is no need for an implicit threat.

Two things.
One, the italian Is fantastic, It sounds more like she's a character in a play than actually speaking normally but that actually works in its favour, and the accent was Absolutely Nailed too.
Two, Who the hell wrote Those and Cesar's subtitles, and what were they High on?
I love how Pedro II speaks in portuguese. And is easier to understand him because portuguese sound like spanish.
Portuguese translation is wrong. Pedro ll's second line translates to "You will see how this will be fruitless to you, no?", which is kind of funny. It's like he's asking your opinion on it, instead of being intimidating. To match the subtitle, his line would have to be: "Você pode ver como isso será infrutífero, não?", as opposed to "Você verá como isso lhe será infrutífero, não é?", which is what he said.

As a resident in Portugal, what "shocks" me the most is his Brazilian accent. Pedro the 2nd was Portuguese before moving to Brazil. I don't think he was already speaking Brazilian Portuguese (like using você)
Barbarossa is in full plate. It makes no sense, he died in 1190, 2 centuries before plate armor were actually used.

Sorry for the inconvenience, in this case "both war declaration cutscene" means the two firaxis cutscene related to war dec for each leader... and not both leaders's war declaration...

Did you notice that some leaders have bilingual speeches? Caterina de medici speaks italian (with a strong Florence accent) while declaring war, while she speaks French when the player declares war against her. The same happens with Ghandi. I really love this feature

Anyway, here Gilgamesh is portrayed as the historical Gilgamesh, that might have been a sumerian king of the third millennium BC, not the demigod who built walls with his bare hands, which is a myth. Even if he had been the demigod, there is a slight difference between being incredibly strong (like Christopher Reeve as Superman), and looking like a steroid-taking bodybuilder, taking into account that, obviously, there is not a single representation of Gilgamesh that shows him like a Mr. Olympia contestant, maybe because it is unlikely that sumerians knew steroids, or bodybuilding.
karlinx Given that he is incredibly muscular, tall, and so forth, and this iteration of civilization uses an optimistic, very pronounced cartoon art style, I assumed that they elected for cutting it down the middle, creating a pseudomythical version of him. Also, relying entirely on the representations of civilizations is not as boilerplate as one might think, given that many artists of ancient mesopotamia were not well-traveled and worked by descriptions- case in point that mural artists depicted riders on the rump of their horses, among other things. It's also not unique to mesopotamia, cultures all over the world will depict things as they are described without having ever seen them, sometimes with gusto, like China did with lions.
