He said in an interview to The Charismatic Voice that this whole song was in his natural voice, no growl, no subharmonics. His usual technique is subharmonics, but that's all his natural range.
He does use multiple registers here. You can definitely here the vocal fry register in certain places, and I'm pretty sure some of the high parts get into the falsetto register as well. Use of multiple registers is a technique that a lot of professional singers kind of take for granted, but regular people are often not aware of it, and it extends the vocal range significantly.
As others have already said, he’s said that this song is all in chest. For examples of extended subharmonic tones, listen/react to his “Far over the misty mountains cold” and VoicePlay’s “My mother told me” or “The oogie boogie song” (from the film The Nightmare before Christmas). But everything from him and VoicePlay is great!
The only thing better than watching and listening to Geoff is watching/listening to Geoff X4. Geoff does do some beatbox, typically when Layne is doing something else. So he has the capacity. He has described his role in VoicePlay as "singing the bass guitar". But in VoicePlay, all of the guys do everything. Eli, (pronounced el ee) is a tenor, but if Geoff is singing lead Eli sometimes fills in on bass. Layne Stein is beatbox (his description: plays drums) but has a gorgeous baritone voice as well. Geoff and Layne do most of the arrangements and videos, and sometimes Eli arranges too. Eli recently did the backdrops for "My Mother Told Me." These guys are massively talented. Geoff's range is 5 octaves. To me, the primary distinction between the three groups is this: Pentatonix sings traditional a cappella, Home Free sings mostly country, and VoicePlay does everything. They break a lot of rules, they like to have fun and insert humor and costuming into their performances. And their harmonies, no matter who is arranging, are heart-stoppingly beautiful. To see VoicePlay being both massively silly and incredibly musical, check their cover of The Nightmare Before Christmas' song, "Oogie Boogie Man." Geoff sings lead. For something a bit more serious, check "My Mother Told Me" or "Warriors." For more of Geoff's top range, "Blackbird". To see Geoff's latest, with most of the harmonies in the basement, "The Misty Mountain."
You can really see his range in The Oogie Boogie Song, The Little Mermaid, My mother told me, Queen in 5 minutes and You're a mean one Mr.Grinch with VoicePlay, in his own you can check out Misty Mountains, Country Roads, High and Dry or The Headless Horsemen
Misty Mountains Cold by Peter Hollens and Tim Foust and Far over the Misty Mountains Cold by Geoff Castellucci. Both are great for different reasons. 👍😀
When a fresh listener to Geoff or VoicePlay calls some note in the middle of the song incredibly low, you can bet almost every seasoned fan pulls out 🍿 muttering "He ain't heard nothing yet". Geoff loves to do a real bass drop at the end if the song allows it.
I always remember one reactor starting 16 tons and she said "since this is a bass cover, I am using a bass booster so we can hear it better"... Obviously her first time hearing him, but I couldn't help but laugh. Although I was kind of sorry for it because it had no idea what she had signed it up for.
The world of acappela groups is quite a small world. They all know each other. Blackbird gives you an even better idea, Country Roads also. And High and Dry. He does a bit of beatbox but that role is taken in VoicePlay by Layne Stein. Usually. The member are all very versatile. I think the tool being hit is a lump hammer of some sort. If it's just low you want, check out his Misty Mountains Cold. As to the last note I think it was still a chest voice, but no doubt another fan will tell you. They're good at that. :) Geoff as a dwarf, hahaha. Love it.
It's not just range. When you check out more of him you will often get hit with Geoff's skill of skipping 2 octaves rather casually. Something all vocal teachers are taken aback because so hard to do. Dimash another popular singer who does it, but that guy is universally seen as unreal.
in Geoff's solo work on his own channel, he usually uses a little light instrumentation behind his singing. bass, violin, drums, piano... he doesn't do pure acapella in his solo work. if you really want to get an idea of his range though, blackbird is the song you need. he uses all 5 octaves in this song :)
All the songs suggested below are great. I will add a few more from his group Voiceplay: Little Mermaid Medley, Queen in 5 Minutes, Carry on my Wayward Son and My Mother Told Me.
Geoff does it all, along with the rest of the group. He is the bass, with range to the tenor range. He does do some beatboxing, although Layne does most in the Voice Play videos. He and Layne also trade off most of their arrangements, with Eli (pronounced L.E.) jumping in from time to time. Layne does most of the editing. Layne and Eli do a lot of the lighting. Some of the work takes place at PattyCake Productions, the company that Layne co-owns with Tony Wakim, an earlier member of the group. Geoff's wife Kathy does most of the camera work and occasionally, the makeup. You can't go wrong with anything these guys do!
he did a great cover of the Beatles "blackbird" as for a range high to low you might enjoy Voiceplays "oggie Boogie song" (from nightmare before Christmas) i think this song shows a great showing of what he can do range wise
He hits an E1 in each of those songs. For Voiceplay, besides "Oogie Boogie Song," "The Little Mermaid Medley" and "You're a Mean One Mr Grinch" will give you a good idea of their theatrical mode.
I really enjoy watching your reaction videos! I think you would REALLY enjoy Voiceplay's video of "My Mother Told Me". I look forward to seeing more of your reaction videos.
There are so many songs you need to listen to from Geoff and from Voiceplay! Carry on Wayward Son, ...Misty Mountains Cold, Oogie Boogie Song, Bang, etc...
Hello from Italy.🎼💯🎼🇮🇹
You're welcome, Maria! It indeed is extraordinary! I'm getting to know new music and artist by doing these videos, and I hope that I get other people to know new music as well, so happy you got to know this one! ;)
Geoff has some good instructional videos on how to find & expand your natural singing range. Not that it ever did me any good. I never tried. But I did watch a few & they are good. I don't think this is his best video but that may be my bias against country music. I mean obviously he is good in it. I'm sure many will make suggestions for you to react to Voice Play. I think his best is 'Oogie Boogie's Song' to show off his range (at least 5 octaves). It is from the movie Nightmare Before Christmas. Some people get confused by the song if they don't know the context. But just listen to him sing & the extreme character voices the rest of Voice Play uses. 3:25 I think I have heard Geoff helping the beatboxer (Layne) a few times.
Since voices are not pegs that line up perfectly by category voice types such as bass through baritone are a spectrum. True bass from the past had a default speaking range deep in the 1st octave. They are the basso profundo vocalists that had no need to demonstrate overall range both because there was no demand for it and they anatomically couldn't. Avi Kaplan, Geoff Castellucci, Tim Foust all have speaking voices in the 2nd octave. With techniques both old and new they can hit the notes the basso profundo can hit and extend their range 4-5 octaves because they aren't limited by suspension bridge thick cords. Like a spectrum they are not bass they are not baritone they fall somewhere in that spectrum and their mastery of vocal technique combined with appropriate anatomy makes them stand out as incredible bass vocalists with crazy ranges.
As I am sure many will say, react to Voiceplay singing the "Oogie Boogie Song". Geoff is freaking amazing in that. Also his solo version of "Blackbird" is awesome.
An original by Merle Travis in 1947.. ( Folk ) Tennessee Ernie Ford made it a number one country song hit in 1955.. I still have the original 78 Vinyl album ( Folk Songs Of The Hills ) by Merle Travis, featuring this song. Was my dads favorite.
Do some more coverage of VoicePlay (Geoff too). I really like your commentary and there are some amazing covers from both VP and Geoff. Generally I think he uses subharmonics over growls. Recently Geoff has done Ain't No Sunshine (Bill Withers) and yesterday dropped an old Elvis Presley tune called Way Down. VoicePlay has done Aerosmith's Dream On (aka Warriors II - if you havn't seen it, it's worth the time) and Enemy (Imagine Dragons) with AleXa an American/half S. Korean KPop singer (just won best American Song) living in S. Korea. She got hold of VoicePlay and wanted to do something with them. They settled on Enemy, she sent in her video and audio from Korea and Eli and Layne did the arranging and fitting of AleXa's video with theirs. Cool to see and sounds great.
Don't know if you're familiar with the song but it was made famous by a country singer named "Tennessee" Ernie Ford. Ernie is from Bristol, TN - which about an hour away from where I live. Ernie had his own TV variety show in the late 50s/early 60s. I remember watching the show when I was little. (Yes, I'm old.) Ernie had a deep voice, but not quite as deep as Geoff. It's a coal mining song, referring to 16 tons of coal. The area where I live is coal mining country.
Thanks for your reaction. You should listen to Geoff sing “High and Dry”. It is just him (one of him) moving through most of his 5 octave range. This was fun
Listen to Voiceplay's Death of a Bachelor to hear Geoff beatbox. This song wasn't performed by the whole group, just Geoff (the bass) and Earl (then the high tenor) multi-tracked.
There are the big 3 American bass singers. Geoff Castelluci, Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan. Also a couple of others - Elliott Robinson etc. It is a very rare voice type. I need to take a closer look at the tools, but some of the hand tools used for mining by hand would be a shovel, pick axe, hammer (both sledgehammer and a smaller metal creasing hammer), wedges, and possibly a pan.
We loved this video and are also Voiceplay stans (literally how we started our band haha) ! We're an all guy a cappella group, we'd love to know what you think of either of our current music videos!!
Fun fact, Geoff and Layne (current and the last two original members of voiceplay) was originally the beat boxer in their original acapella group and Layne (current beat boxer) was the tenor lol
Geoff does help out with beatboxing when Layne can use another layer. I have seen Layne play a violin in Warriors while beatboxing. Geoff's range for 2022 is B0 (in Halo theme) to A5. He's got an incredible voice.
Great review! Yes, Geoff's music really puts a smile on your face 😁. Could you review his new cover of Monster Mash? It's just in time for Halloween 🎃!

My favorite of theirs is Oogie Boogie's Song. Also, their bass singer Geoff Castellucci has produced some great ones including
The Headless Horseman Sixteen Tons and Blackbird Thanks ..
Just a little thing to point out: Geoff also reads Poems (The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe ua-cam.com/video/p4t280b12G4/v-deo.html ), Childrens-Stories (The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen ua-cam.com/video/lscKhYqviDw/v-deo.html ). Also anything Voiceplay is basically a must for anyone who likes Bass Singers. Tim Foust and Peter Hollens - Misty Mountain is also great (the ending destroyed my Subwoofer ...)
Voiceplays Oogie Boogie Song has to be one of the best displays of Geoffs vocal range from amazing belts to beasty sub harmonics. Well worth a reaction!
I think when he was saying chest/full voice he was talking specifically about the low notes - some of those upper harmonies definitely included some head voice, or at least mix.
@@maeco7 his words were that the entire song was chest voice, which he gets much higher using his head voice in "High and Dry" so I think I believe him
Also, you should watch Jeff cover Over the Misty Mountain..., and Blackbird. Both show his incredible vocal range.😊also,on the subject of Vocal groups...give Do You hear what I Hear by Home Free a watch, and PTX Show you how to Love video its an original. Also PTX Imagine cover is beyond beautiful!!😊enjoy!!im sure you'll love these videos as much as I do....oh ya...PTX Dance of the Sugar Plum Faries also!!
Hi Brandi! Well, meanwhile, I’ve posted our reaction to the Oogie boogie’s song from voiceplay, so perhaps you can check that one out as well.😉 And indeed, I saw there are a couple of covers from this song, including Johny Cash and the version in a movie ft George Clooney.
Actually Geoff DOES beatbox. In fact, he was the one who taught beatboxing to Layne Stein, the beatboxing BEAST from their Group VoicePlay! So never put anything beyond him. He does his own instrumentation on his solo work. Although you won't see this probably since you did this 3 yrs ago!
Check out Voiceplay: Oogie Boogie Song, Warriors, Panic at the disco in 3 minutes, You're the mean one Mr Grinch, My mother told me and the little mermaid medley :)
Hey Geoff virgins voice play oogy boogy he leads on it and you will loose your mind both hi and low and ultra low and my mother told me is a cool song Geoff alone headless horseman you will freak
Yeah his cover of misty mountains cold will blow ur mind, in this music tho he only used chest voice,... Yeah take that in, only chest, no subharmonics (which btw wht u did isnt subharmomics is fry), no growl or fry.
He said in an interview to The Charismatic Voice that this whole song was in his natural voice, no growl, no subharmonics.
His usual technique is subharmonics, but that's all his natural range.

Also.. check out another a cappella group called Voiceplay. My favorite of theirs is
Oogie Boogie's Song.
Also, their bass singer Geoff Castellucci has produced some great ones including
The Headless Horseman
Sixteen Tons and
Blackbird
Thanks
..
Oogie Boogie's song will make you blow your top with his full register from B4 to E1!
Thx for the suggestions Rawwbot! Haha I can imagine your Subwoofer going nuts on those low tones! :p
Please check high and dry, far over the misty mountain cold also covered by Geoff Castellucci
Please react to Geoff doing "Headless Horseman". It's very theatrical, fun and low bass.
Thx for the suggestion Bob! :D
Geoff's range from 2021 and Halo by VoicePlay from B0 to A5in another of his songs..
Welcome to yet another tunnel of the acapella rabbit hole.
You definitely have to check out his newest one
Geoff has at least a 5 octave range.
Voiceplays Oogie Boogie Song has to be one of the best displays of Geoffs vocal range from amazing belts to beasty sub harmonics. Well worth a reaction!
I think that will be one of the next ones I react to including Geoff! :D
He does have a five octave range
He was interviewed and said that this is all chest/full voice, no head voice or sub harmonics
I think when he was saying chest/full voice he was talking specifically about the low notes - some of those upper harmonies definitely included some head voice, or at least mix.
@@maeco7 his words were that the entire song was chest voice, which he gets much higher using his head voice in "High and Dry" so I think I believe him
Oogie Boogie song ..and Blackbird ... you wont regret it!
Geoff just dropped a new song. House of the Rising Sun.
Hi SeaHag! Yeah, I saw! But I haven’t watched it yet, as I want to do a reaction to it😉
~08:20 "Like: How much more manly can a voice get?" --> I guess you should take Tim Storms - "Lonesome Road" for reference . . . .
Please do a reaction video of Geoff Castellucci's version of Big John. This is his newest song.
Super LG
Do please react to Voiceplay! You'll like them, I think
Well Robin, I indeed think I will like them :p
If you want to hear Geoff's range and Voice Play try The Little Mermaid or the Oogie Boogie Song. Fabulous!
You gotta watch his latest video
You should definitely look at the voiceplay UA-cam page, also, wiki the history of this song. It's very interesting.
Hi Brandi! Well, meanwhile, I’ve posted our reaction to the Oogie boogie’s song from voiceplay, so perhaps you can check that one out as well.😉 And indeed, I saw there are a couple of covers from this song, including Johny Cash and the version in a movie ft George Clooney.
Others have said great songs to listen to but a great one to hear is the headless horseman
Thx for the suggestion Tim! Hard to choose probably between all these songs :p
@@YBPlaysMusic trust me. You want a low note it’s this or misty mountain. 😉
React to "Oogie Boogie Song" from the "Night before Christmas" shows Geoff's total range .... Really WOUW!!
Thx for the suggestion vincent! I got good news for you, we recorded that one already and will be up next Sunday! ;)
For a better sample of his spoken voice and more incredible low notes you have to watch The Headless Horseman.
you want a good octave drop and show of range blackbird which is Geoff Alone or Oogie Boogie Song by Voiceplay
Geoff does beatbox too. On blackbird you REALLY get his range
I can imagine he’d have a crazy good bass drum sound😜
@@YBPlaysMusic hey that's not SNARE 😂 see what I did there 😉
Check out Voiceplay: Oogie Boogie Song, Warriors, Panic at the disco in 3 minutes, You're the mean one Mr Grinch, My mother told me and the little mermaid medley :)
If you want to get his entire range watch the video "Oogie Boogie Song' from the Nightmare before Christmas.
Geoff can beatbox but in voiceplay Layne Stein is the beatboxer he is also sensational
Hey Geoff virgins voice play oogy boogy he leads on it and you will loose your mind both hi and low and ultra low and my mother told me is a cool song Geoff alone headless horseman you will freak
Solitary Wolf?
- you have to watch oogie boogie!!
Geoff does do some beatbox with voiceplay
But this here isn't an a cappella
He borrowed the tools from his dad!
Yeah his cover of misty mountains cold will blow ur mind, in this music tho he only used chest voice,... Yeah take that in, only chest, no subharmonics (which btw wht u did isnt subharmomics is fry), no growl or fry.
Check out the Oogie Boogie Song!!!
do blackbird ,then you realy hear his voice range
The third tool is a pick not an axe
