Next time you question yourself or your voice just remember I think you are awesome and you are helping so many people learn to use their voice and you are probably bringing so much joy to people
Someone posted a question on twitter - "What belief did you have when you were young that has completely changed?" Mine was that I've a terrible voice and I will never be able to sing. How wrong I was. I wish I had followed my dreams and had a teacher like this chap.
I've been reminded that my voice is pretty unattractive through my whole life even though it never really bothered me. But that's kind of my problem. My speaking voice is already concidered unattractive and my singing voice sounds the same but.. singing, so i really dk when i make progress. What adds to my confusion is that I do know how to sing and use my natural voice but i don't know if it's actually "good"
I read a very hypocrite comment on Mariah Carey starting out as a bad singer… when she came out as a singer she wowed the whole world with her talent…. She is the daughter of an opera singer trained at jullliard.
Are you kidding? Your voice sounds so fricking good, even tho the genre of music you produce is not really my type I have to acknowledge you are pure natural talent
I’m a woman and I have an unconventional voice. It’s lower than “normal” and I haven’t ever taken voice lessons just because I hate my speech patterns and the way I say things but I got a burst of passion for singing all the sudden and I just booked my first lesson this week
i do like how you mentioned that mick jagger sounds good because he has keith richards. it's the same ideology as picking out a guitar or guitar amp. maybe a certain guitar will sound "better" or whatever compared to another one, but when playing a specific genre or style, than the other guitar will get the job done better than any other guitar can. so it's really on what the masses prefer, there is no ugly voice unless the singer is just a bad singer to begin with.
Just as a side note, Jagger co-wrote many songs with Richards. They worked better as a team, and that helped bolster Jagger unconventional voice type. I know that wasn't the point of this vid, but I just thought I'd note it.
The most important technique is pitch. Early Dylan had better pitch than people give him credit for, and had great energy and delivery. Later on he lost his pitch and got really bad. Bad pitch is the only real ugly.
After about a decade of serious illness, my voice dropped and became a gravelly nightmare. At one point I could not sing more than about 5 notes. Then I started writing songs. My voice has been improving and I'm enjoying this interesting voice much better than that boring soprano. I've been doing your warm up exercises and seen improvement in a few weeks. I start back with my vocal coach Mary Ann Kehler next week. So I know its only upward from here.
Been watching your channel for a while, nice imformation! Recently I am trying to embrace my voice as what it is. I am poperly a barritone and found no matter how high I sing the timbre is always different from those big hits tenors even if I sing higher than the original. My thoughts is with training we can stretch and change our voices to fit in different styles but no matter how far we go there is always something like a fingerprint that belongs to just one individual, and that is the one thing we have to accept and try to love it. It is so cool to be imperfect and all the singers you have mentioned in this video is my favourite. :D
“I could have been a famous singer, if I had someone else’s voice…but failure’s always sounded better, let’s fuck it up boys MAKE SOME NOISE!” Bright Eyes - “Road toJoy”
Thank you for this video! Singing is my passion since I can remember. I always used to sing like my idols did. Try to copy the exact way they sing. But little did I know that I was forcing and doing it wrong. 4 years ago I decided to take singing classes and I was very uncomfortable when I had to switch to my head voice. It didn’t sound powerful, like the voices I loved. But rather like a little girl whispering. It took me some time to accept my higher pitch voice and then train it to become more consistent and powerful. My vocal coach also told me that I should accept how I sound and that what’s coming out of my mouth, it’s me. I’m not Alanis Morissette or Lady Gaga, but that’s OK. I’m well aware that my voice doesn’t please everybody but I’m aware as well that I know the technique and sing right 😊
I have been told I shouldn't sing for my entire life. Ive been told Im tone deaf, and that I should stick to playing the keyboard and just give up on singing...but when im alone such as in the car or in the tub I feel like I can nail some songs and even feel like I wouldn't be horrified if I heard a recording of myself....but i think that singing is very much about confidence...you have to believe you can do it!
Listen to live versions of anyone you like or any song you are trying to sing. Also, listen to covers. Then you realize how much studio polishing helps many singers.
Due to a deviated septum and probably some other genetic structures, I think my voice is a bit nasal and possibly has a buzz that I can't entirely hear myself. However, I do know that through continued practice, I have gotten better over time, though I'm still definitely amateur, and could use a lot of improvement.
I am sure through breathing exercises and voice training people are shocked at the improvement. I was. But you have to keep it up.I do more intense workouts every other day and quicker ones in-between. Through singing songs the moods are lifted. So never give up.
I call it Signature. As in, does a voice have signature. That identifiable quality where you can immediately identify the artist sight unseen. There are many many singing artists with amazing talent and range; however, their voices blend in with everyone else’s voice; their voice don’t have signature. This extends across all genres of music - pop, rock, rap, country, etcetera. But then you have artists like Snoop, Adele, Kurt Cobain, Elvis, Sinatra, The Weeknd, & others, whose voices are so distinctive that you immediately identify their signature. Signature can play a major role in an artist’s popularity; people fall in love with voices, and this can contribute to an artist having an extensive career. Can you identify a vocal lineup? Have a friend choose lesser known songs by a number of major artists and see if you can identify who’s who.
Feeling this now. Recorded singing along to something recently and almost seems like I don't hear how bad I sound when singing until I record and listen to it. Feel like there something other than just pitch going on and have no idea how to correct if I can't even hear it when I sing or even know what is wrong other than I sound bad. Very frustrating for someone that loves music and can play instruments and write.
I am one of those people who is incapable of singing at all. I am convinced that no amount of singing lessons would ever make my singing voice rise above being painfully terrible. Simply put, I am singing impaired.
i always think about miley cyrus when i start to get down about my voice. i understand growing up and puberty plays a huge part, but comparing her disney days to her voice now, you can see such a tremendous improvement. even from her earlier albums post disney til now, i find her overall tone and abilities have significantly improved. i love her voice and i find it very beautiful. i wasn’t describing it as that 10+ years ago and i was also a fan of her then.
Bob Dylan's voice sounded pretty good on Nashville Skyline (album), he knew how to make his voice less harsh sounding just chose not to to some degree.
I've felt this but someone told me every one can sing. I have a childish natural voice so it makes me worry about my singing voice which doesn't have much range. 😆
My voice is actually great, but it’s weak. I never do warmups or anything though, I just sing along with music while I garden or wash dishes. I’m good enough that people tell me to take lessons but bad enough that recording myself makes me cry.
For me it's the other way around. I think I have a very mundane and boring voice even if I know how to sing. I would love to have one of those unique voices!
I don’t like the sound of my voice after doing all the training things, singing or speaking. I don’t have the interesting or unconventional voice either, just a normal annoying one. But I have to speak for work and I like to sing (not professionally of course) so I get on with it.
I found out I had an "ugly" voice when I had an easier time singing along to Tom Waits then to any conventional singer, i'm starting to think I got some sort of scarring in the vocal cords or something as I had tubes to breath for a long time after an accident in my childhood, always had a problem with sounding fried and breathy and not being able to hold a tone but oh well, i'm just singing for fun in the car to and from work and when I play my keyboard anyways :)
My friends and family kept telling me that I sang pretty, but now that I'm taking voice lessons, I realize I suck. I feel I'm improving a bit, singing more in tune, but the fact that I tend to pick up hard rock songs doesn't help. My coach keeps telling that I hold myself back. It is very frustrating. Plus, I don't feel I have a distinctive voice, kind of sweet, yet not sweet enough to sing girlie songs
What if I just want to sing well? I'm not interested in any singing career, nor do I want to be famous. I just want to melt people's hearts with my voice. Knowing my voice ain't gonna do that, should I just give up?
I literally came here because my type of voice is considered "ugly" because i came from Manila PH which has this standard high note voice which we love.. So i keep my singing to myself and few friends who appreciate it
Hi Ramsey, I'm 24 y.o. and I can reach easely the voiceRange F3->C6. During my youth, from 12 to 14 years old, I sang as a choir boy, so I practiced weekly. My lung capacity is 8 litres because I'm an athlete , but my voice is ugly especially when I sing in French which only happens in 1 of my 5 songs so far, the others are in English. In French it sounds harsh and forced. And even when I sing in English or other languages, it is not pleasant to hear it. Even if I was alone for a whole day and didn't even talk to anyone, my voice is very hoarse. Somethimes , my voice cracks into another tone or at other times it falters. It's also difficult to keep my voice in the same strength. And finaly I find it monotonous, just as my speaking voice. The only thing which makes it better is a) to record my song about 10 times and use only the 10th version, b) not singing in French, and c) sing with a relaxed voice. After, there is still some work when I mix my voice with the song. Besides this , i think there are still (only) 2 options left : take singing lessons and record my voice in a professional studio and have it mixed properly. But as a beginning singer, this is expensive. Do you have any other suggestions ? Greetings, Patrick.
I feel like no matter what I do I won’t sound good. It has that stuffy yawning sound. And if I don’t like what I hear coming from me I sure hell won’t let anyone listen to it. It’s not pleasing, I’ve turned many people off which is a sign I won’t succeed.
When I was just a kid, maybe 12 yrs old, I was first teaching myself to play guitar…my dad would come home from work and barge in my room while I practiced playing/singing. He’d say, in one way or another, that I sounded terrible or that “it Sounds like you’re drowning a cat in here!” My Dad was a good father and I loved him. He worked hard to provide for us and did a lot for me but he was kind of an inconsiderate asshole like that sometimes…Idk why but he just was. I think he probably just wanted some peace and quiet after a long shift… but as a result I stopped practicing whenever he was home. His job was a swing-shift schedule so when he worked days, I could practice all night long so for all he knew I just quit trying to learn to play. A couple yrs later, we were on family vacation and went to an outdoor strip Mall with a bunch of shops because my Mom and sisters wanted to shop for souvenirs or other boring stuff I wasn’t interested in. Luckily there was a guitar shop and so I went in there alone to kill time until they wanted to leave…I knew better than to ask for my Dad to spend money on a new guitar lol. Anyways, after awhile…I was playing and singing off in the corner of the empty shop. I found an acoustic guitar I I liked and I played/sang a couple verses of a song on it…then turned around and saw my family was there behind me and they were watching me. I WAS SO EMBARASSED lol. I said I was sorry and put the guitar back up and was ready to go…but my dad just kinda stood there tho and was looking at me funny. He said, “do you like that one?” I said yeah…I do….he said, “ok” and flagged down the guy at the front. “He likes this one.” 15?’inutes later I’m loading my new Takenine guitar and case into the family van. I think had impressed him and that’s why he did it. I don’t think he really knew how much I had been practicing and how good I’d gotten over the last few years lol. I still have that guitar and always will. It’s one Zi will never sell, it’s priceless. It’s nothing fancy or expensive but it’s special to me and it sounds better with age. Moral of the story: don’t let someone else’s words/opinion get you down. Do what makes you happy and as a wise man once said, “If you want to sing out, then sing out.”
Stopped midway to say, When Philip Philips won over Jessica Sanchez and the world was pissed, thats exactly it. He was unique and i loved it and he sounded great as well. Whereas Jessica was immensely talented but too much of the same sound. She could make it on her own whereas it would actually take more eyes to see Philip. Anyway;
I like my voice but my sister always said I have an ugly voice. I do love to sing and would love to sing better just for myself. I'm 65 years old. Can I learn to sing better? Not great, I know, but better, just for myself?
This is me. I have the ugliest voice you will ever hear. I try and try and try which is why I just purchased your voice mastery course. I’m the Canadian gal who asked for another song 😅 SOS
My voice is disgusting! All my plans are messed up... What did I expect from someone who can't do anything right? I mean with all my body which is disgusting, was my voice going to be beautiful? Of course not...
Never ever liked the sound of my own voice. Got goaded into Karaoke and belted out a song because I was a few beers deep. Two people from the crowd came up and joined as backing vocals (was an Alice In Chains song with Cantrell harmonizing with Staley). Afterwards, people were asking what band I was in. Me? Band? haha, no. But maybe it's possible? Don't let the sound to your own ears discourage you. I wasn't hearing what others did. Someone showed me a video they took on their phone and I was like who is this singing? Holy **** that's me? I was my own worst critic.
I actively can’t stand my voice, I have wanted to be a singer from as long as I can remember however I had zero natural talent and a pretty boring voice. I got into metal because I was very angry and naturally good at screaming. I have done metal vocals for almost 30 years. I can crush pretty much any style of fry scream, death growls, and so on…However we always had to have a guitar player or second singer for the clean singing. I just could not do it. Always flat, ugly, and I would just shy away from trying. Now at 46 I’m getting a bit old for metal, and I’m no longer pissed off at the world. For the last few months I been putting in about 45-60 min a day. It’s not going well. Getting better at throat singing tho😂
i just want a voice that i can speak with , FFS,, my voice is really bad that i get always called to shutup your voice is too annoying and ugly, even from close people i tried everything, idk what to do ,, ig imma remain silent in my entire life
I will never be a singer My voice doesn't get very high for the music I play and I cannot hold a note my voice always cracks. I suck at singing but i can play the guitar. Wish i could sing so i could do both. I'm old to top it off I'm 62 years old.
i had great sound but after puberty my voice seems really bad ,i sound like i smoke everyday now i am out of puberty and still i sound like smoker man,i do not think it would get better cause even when i talk it just sounds bad
Right on, Matt. Be yourself, build on what you have. None of us are likely to come close to this recording, but that's no reason to give up - the most beautiful vocal recording I know of, Andreas Scholl in the Agnus Dei of Bach's Mass in B Minor. And I'm an atheist, but the fact we had to say these words (in English) in church doesn't bother me in the least. Beautiful: ua-cam.com/video/tdLCcQixNvg/v-deo.html
i think some artist have bad days in the studio and good days in the studio for example when a rerocording song isnt always the best version its like u cant recreate perfection when i say rerecorded i mean the same artist doing a new version of the same song and most of them suck in my opinion becuse the original is the best
I feel just like Chris and funny enough that is my name as well 😆 🤣 😂 I get where he is coming from and i feel like my voice isn't awful but it's not great either because i have a low southern drawl in my voice which i hate because it's not loud enough and also because i don't like country i would prefer doing rock or metal instead
I really want to sing, I really do. I’m 12 years old and I’ve been singing since I was 9, but I decided recently to start recording my voice I hate it so much, I cried for about an hour completely denying that that’s the nature of my voice. All of my friends in choir tell me they think my voice is beautiful, but I just can’t believe them. I just wanna be talented in something 😢
Depending on how well the mic picked up all the overtones of your voice and the resonance of the room, it might sound completely off from what you really sound like to the people standing around you. Stand a bit further apart from the mic, it can make a big difference. And minute differences in the pressure in your chest, your posture or the opening of you mouth combine to have a massive impact on the quality of your voice. I learned this myself whe I desperately struggled to improve my voice after being disgusted by my sound on the mic. As a singer your body IS the instrument, and requires careful tuning.

I'm not worried, I'm in it for the long haul. Thanks Matt!
Next time you question yourself or your voice just remember I think you are awesome and you are helping so many people learn to use their voice and you are probably bringing so much joy to people
I sometimes think that learning classical singing will bring out the beautiful side of my voice that pop techniques can’t.
Thank you Ramsey. I’ve been struggling with an ugly voice but I haven’t given up on my training and routine. I’m super confident in my writing. 🤞🏽
Thanks for your words🥺💞
i do like how you mentioned that mick jagger sounds good because he has keith richards. it's the same ideology as picking out a guitar or guitar amp. maybe a certain guitar will sound "better" or whatever compared to another one, but when playing a specific genre or style, than the other guitar will get the job done better than any other guitar can. so it's really on what the masses prefer, there is no ugly voice unless the singer is just a bad singer to begin with.
Just as a side note, Jagger co-wrote many songs with Richards. They worked better as a team, and that helped bolster Jagger unconventional voice type. I know that wasn't the point of this vid, but I just thought I'd note it.
The Glimmer Twins
“I could have been a famous singer, if I had someone else’s voice…but failure’s always sounded better, let’s fuck it up boys MAKE SOME NOISE!”
Bright Eyes - “Road toJoy”
Very frustrating for someone that loves music and can play instruments and write.
the smoking and screaming into a pillow trick doesn’t sound too bad
Thank you very much for the answer, with great commitment you help in singing, but I think I'm too old and without talent
No you can boro
My problem is I have a bad talking and singing voice, I can only sing death metal
Hey Matt, I’ve been wanting to work on my singing voice because I don’t like it, but I’m going to start working on it
This video is great help, thank you!
Just the video i needed
Greatest 'flat' singer of all time, IMO... Exene Cervenka :)
PS. I still dont like my own voice but I'm def getting used to it.
I literally came here because my type of voice is considered "ugly" because i came from Manila PH which has this standard high note voice which we love.. So i keep my singing to myself and few friends who appreciate it
This vid is so helpful! Thank you!
Really good advice!
I think he probably just wanted some peace and quiet after a long shift…
but as a result I stopped practicing whenever he was home.
“He likes this one.”
15?’inutes later I’m loading my new Takenine guitar and case into the family van.
Stopped midway to say,
When Philip Philips won over Jessica Sanchez and the world was pissed, thats exactly it. He was unique and i loved it and he sounded great as well. Whereas Jessica was immensely talented but too much of the same sound. She could make it on her own whereas it would actually take more eyes to see Philip.
Anyway;
I like my speaking voice. I can do accents. Narration. Voice overs. But sining is different
I'm not sure what I needed to try but I like the video anyway
I like my voice but my sister always said I have an ugly voice. I do love to sing and would love to sing better just for myself. I'm 65 years old. Can I learn to sing better? Not great, I know, but better, just for myself?
This is me. I have the ugliest voice you will ever hear. I try and try and try which is why I just purchased your voice mastery course. I’m the Canadian gal who asked for another song 😅 SOS
I like you. Thanks for this video.
My voice is disgusting! All my plans are messed up... What did I expect from someone who can't do anything right? I mean with all my body which is disgusting, was my voice going to be beautiful? Of course not...
Thank you so much ❤❤
My problem is i have different voices tones some of them are ugly and the others are pretty but I can't sing well in my pretty tone 😢
This is me!!!!! My voice is very idk. Ugly.
I’m have an ugly voice😭 too.
Ugh that Dance Monkey song 😅
i just want a voice that i can speak with , FFS,, my voice is really bad that i get always called to shutup your voice is too annoying and ugly, even from close people
i tried everything, idk what to do ,, ig imma remain silent in my entire life
My voice sounds like I've given up on life 😭😭😭
😂😂
My voice is fugly af.
I have plenty of range, control anf power. But if it were an instrument it would be an annoying one because my timbre is gross.
I literally sound like Bart Simpson. People don't really want to hear Bart Simpson sing songs. 😢
I will never be a singer My voice doesn't get very high for the music I play and I cannot hold a note my voice always cracks. I suck at singing but i can play the guitar. Wish i could sing so i could do both. I'm old to top it off I'm 62 years old.
Your voice has to be match with the music depending on the genre.
If your instrument sucks... Pick a different instrument. 📯🎺🎹🎸🎷🎻
Thank you so much. God bless you for giving such true, honest, and logical advice ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
The problem with my voice is that it has no bass, like literally. i'm an adult male and i sound like a 12 year old kid.
❤thankyou
I can't sing
I think you need to like your own voice to waffle on for 5 mins..
I really want to improve my voice but I don't know how to do it
i had great sound but after puberty my voice seems really bad ,i sound like i smoke everyday now i am out of puberty and still i sound like smoker man,i do not think it would get better cause even when i talk it just sounds bad
So what should I try .... As the title says???
i think some artist have bad days in the studio and good days in the studio for example when a rerocording song isnt always the best version its like u cant recreate perfection when i say rerecorded i mean the same artist doing a new version of the same song and most of them suck in my opinion becuse the original is the best
I just ate three cheeseburgers.
I missed what we're supposed to try? What shit
my voice is too ugly like pelat. what should I do..
you have good verbrato
Can you please teach me how to sing
❤❤❤
I feel just like Chris and funny enough that is my name as well 😆 🤣 😂
I get where he is coming from and i feel like my voice isn't awful but it's not great either because i have a low southern drawl in my voice which i hate because it's not loud enough and also because i don't like country i would prefer doing rock or metal instead
Theres no way this dude is a vocal coach. This impression is awful 💀
I really want to sing, I really do. I’m 12 years old and I’ve been singing since I was 9, but I decided recently to start recording my voice
I hate it so much, I cried for about an hour completely denying that that’s the nature of my voice.
