These are really great tips. Besides the tips you mentioned, 2 I could add are 1)stop trying to force it (related to your reaching for notes tip) For the longest time when trying to sing more powerfully, I thought I had to push harder, but that just caused tension in the sound. Still working on this, but when I relax, ensure I'm breathing correctly and properly place/support the sound, I'm seeing improvement. 2) Practice breathing. It sounds silly, but I've noticed, I think I'm breathing from my diaphram when I start singing, but sometimes after getting frustrated with how I'm doing, I stop take a few breathes where I intentionally focus on my breathing technique, and am suprised how much it helps.

I too use my netty pot😊 as well as cut down my coffee consumption.I never eat any dairy products before a performance and I believe in taking "vocal naps". The habit I had to break was the raising of my shoulders. Thanks for this vid You have good advice.

I’ve recently started learning to play guitar and sing.
Watching your videos has giving me the impetus to practice and sing a little more confidently.
For the first time in my life I’ve found out I can sing well enough and I plan to improve. It’s thrilling.
Thank you for all your videos.

The thing that helped me the most is "you sing high notes making your head voice louder not your chest voice higher"

Very interesting tips. I never thought that coffee would create more mucus. I always thought it was only milk products. Will have to test that out!❤

matt's tips are the best, literally everything he says makes me a better singer
Here are the changes I'm going to start making for this week onwards, many prompted by this video or our lesson yesterday:
    - ordered a neti pot today, seems really unpleasant (like drowning tbh) but I'll do whatever needs to be done. Might help get crap out of my throat and sinuses.
    - gonna start doing double warmups or at least a quick/early AM warmup before bigger practice sessions, voice lesson or performance later in the day
    - trying to warm up in the shower sounds smart, I usually take a hot morning shower
    - keeping my daily voice practice relentlessly consistent, so far been good about this but encourages me to continue down this path
    - gonna have to be more considerate and moderate with my coffee drinking. this one really hurts. I'm used to drinking as much coffee as I want, whenever I want
    - never eating anything closer than 2+ hours from lessons, practice or performance, and preferable 3+ hours. Only water and (a little bit of) beer is allowed, and I need to keep a close eye on the alcohol, but in very moderate amounts (like a single IPA, drank slowly) it seems to consistently relax me and get me into the singing and performance mindset without hurting my voice
Crazy how much being a singer affects the rest of your life. It ain't like playing piano or guitar or synths, let me tell ya (no one get mad at me please, piano/guitar have been my main instruments for 20+ years, no disrespect I love them)! Ever since I started singing more seriously, my life has slowly started to revolve more and more around my vocal cords, lol. The only thing I can compare it to is distance running or other intense athletic activities, which generally causes major changes to my diet, sleep and schedule, and start becoming the center of my day
(note I'm not complaining, it's nice to have a sense of purpose behind all the daily decisions :)

Great tips! Thank you! What did magic for me was “creating sound with as little effort as possible”.
I would go for 30-60min walks, starting with humming through my whole range, always keeping the effort at 0. If there was more effort, it showed me that I had to hum quieter or disengage muscles. With the same approach I would then transition between humming and vocal fry, from there I would involve head voice. I would also try to hit notes of the song I was singing, with the humming/vocal fry or a very light voice. Sliding into notes.
Towards the end I would softly sing the songs I was listening to.
At the end of such walks I would 90% of the times feel vocally free/comfortable. Just by unspectacularly warming up my voice so quietly in a simple way.
And I’m a singer who’s struggling a lot with consistency. So this helped me a lot.
Just remember that warm ups don’t always have to be musical and scale based. Try to focus on the sensation of just creating sound with your voice, how does it feel? Do you feel tense? Does it feel light? Does it feel heavy? How much is your body engaging? Which parts of the body are you engaging?
And I would say your quiet voice is the key to your big voice. At least it is for me😊

Thank you for this awesome video like all of them💯 I definitely have this problem as well. When I sing higher notes. I raise my eyebrows. I'm ok with hearing myself sing I know it sounds really bad. But I know in the future I'll get better with the sound. These videos help tremendously 💯💯

  • @Stephan5916
    @Stephan5916 3 місяці тому

@Ramsey A very good video. I mostly agree however, for me, I feel like it feels easier to sing higher notes when I raise my Eyebrows. Some pros say that raising one's Eyebrows can aid in opening one's Throat more - raise the Soft palate etc. Consequently, the more space there is for the sound with better air flow, the easier it is to sing higher notes.
On the other hand, I've heard a counter argument to that, that raising the Eyebrows could be a sign of straining and that the singer needs to be more relaxed.

People's claimed vocal ranges online simply make me laugh so hard.
Like, are you really gonna go to perform a song and use your false chords, sounding like a robot to hit a G1, and then scoop up to an uncomfortable shrill G#6 whistle????
And this would be if they weren't lying already.

I have a question: I heard a lot of rumors that your speaking voice gets higher as you learn to sing ,the only experience that I had with my voice getting a little higher is when I warm up my voice it goes from an A2 to a B2 (or occasionally a C3 depending on how long I warm up). I have heard a few story's on UA-cam of people singing for a few years and that since they started singing that their voice somehow changed and is an octave higher

I think I have post nasal drip cause I'm always clearing my throat (not after singing, in general, like in the morning or before going to bed), I have to do something about it because it gets worse when I'm nervous or anxious (so before singing in front of someone)

For Habit 5#, can medication have a similar effect to what caffeine does to your voice? Namely ADHD meds or like anxiety or depression meds or other types of medication that's usually taken daily... because if it does, it might prove to be an issue... (I have ADHD and I'm lucky enough to be medicated, but I'm also trying to learn how to sing, but if that means my medication is going to become an obstacle, then I'm not sure what I'll do....)
