- It's time to get Fast & Furious for the 9th time as the Dom Toretto family drama intensifies. Is the 9th film any different than the previous eight? I try to unravel it all in my review of F9.

I have a theory that if you took ten minutes from each FF movie in increments (.00 - .10 of FF, .11-.20 of FF2, .21-.30 of FF3 and so on) and spliced them together, over and over, until you hit two hours, you'd get another just as coherent FF movie.
Agree the best part of F8 was when Vin Diesel wasn't on screen Jason Statham was the highlight of that movie for me
Truth! That’s probably why 2 Fast 2 Furious is in my top 5. Vin was missing the WHOLE movie

Vin wants the drama centered around him so the franchise is dependent on him and he can keep getting steady paychecks.
Vin diesel is worth around 250mn so i don't think it is about paycheck... i think he believes that the reason this franchise is what it is because he rejoined the cast at movie no.4 and also became a producer .. so it feels like its more about his ego of it being 'his" movie .......
@@hjack76 If it is "HIS" movie than he should also own all the criticism. The movie is shit. Like really, bad, stinky, diarrhoea kind of shit. And everybody looks old and bored out of their mind - just like the audience after spending money for this shit.
Money has nothing to do with it. If you ever listen to his interviews, you know it's more about artistic integrity. He has a certain passion for the franchise, like his Riddick franchise. And the reason it stays grounded around his character and the family theme is precisely to keep it FROM getting too out of hand. If they really just let it go off the rails, you end up with truly ridiculous garbage like 'Hobbs and Shaw' or some kind of Michael Bay movie.
considering he actively says he wants the series to go to 10 and then end the mainline franchise (Dom's story) and maybe keeping the spinoffs here and there, he's not interested in money whatsoever. He legitimately cares about this story and these characters. He even said that the whole "we're making it to Fast 10" was a promise to Paul Walker. This does matter to him, and he does have some level of artistic integrity [he's also a huge nerd, DnD player for decades, anime fan (definitely gets some of his inspiration from Anime, you can see it both in his performance and the films themselves.)]
@@RyoMassaki absolutely he should... Specially because he's a producer and is sitting in the driving seat of the project ( pun intended)... But given his ego about the subject matter, i doubt that he even consider any form of criticism constructive or otherwise... 👍

because their target audience is teenagers, and teenagers have low standards, are easily entertained, and most importantly: are dumb.

Vin Diesel used to be unironically hella cool in the mid 2000's, and a genuinely good actor.
Problem is, Vin got complaicent and didn't evolve with the times, he has become a parody of himself... it's Bruce Willis all over again, with the F&F series holding him afloat.

Wow, I'm actually gonna disagree with Dan and go in the completely opposite direction. I think the action is getting too ridiculous and I would actually prefer if they scaled back. Everything is just becoming so cartoonish, it's impossible to take literally anything seriously. Tokyo Drift is one of my favorites, and I would like them to go back to that world.

Dan, you articulated exactly what I was thinking while watching this movie. No one comes to see fast and furious for the drama. I rolled my eyes every time Vin Diesel started trying to act or with every flashback. If these movies are gonna go full ludicrous 😉 then they need to commit and go all out without being muddled by Vin's weird drama.

On Twitter I likened the Fast & Furious contempt for physics to the Sharknado franchise and Thunder Levin (the writer of Sharknado) directly & immediately responded, taking offense at the comparison. I really liked that response.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Fast and Furious 10: Jesse didn't die. He was in a coma, and Leon was watching over him the whole time in the hospital. Also, Monica Fuentes, Sgt. Tanner and Agent Bilkins tell Dom and his crew that Johnny Tran never died and now wants revenge on the entire F&F team. Han also finds out that Johnny Tran is his brother and now has mixed feelings on which side to choose.
Just watched the movie. My husband and I cracked up laughing every time a new ridiculous thing happened in movie. “Yep, every bullet hit ONLY his vest. Not his leg. Not his head. Not his arm.” 😂
The last few Fast movies are the real life version of the Scorcher films from Tropic Thunder. Except instead of Tugg Speedman, it's Vin Diesel.

Yeah, Chris Morgan has been the main architect of these films, but I don't feel like he was very inspired for Hobbs and Shaw, and I'm not sure how much better F9 could have been had he had a hand in writing it.
I just came back from watching this movie. It was ridiculous fun as usual, so I’m fine with it. Even Diesel and Rodriguez constant moping and frowning faces I found funny…as taking oneself so seriously in the context of this ridiculous movie is amusing in and of itself 😆 and I actually liked the family drama part of it too. The actor that played a young Dom back in the late 80s is an interesting and imposing dude. I’d like to see him play other parts in other shows and movies as well.
I think that was Vin Diesel's son 😂. He just wanted to have him in the movie.

@@DavidDatura Mabye, I didn't see Fast 9 and I don't plan to either 😄. I just thought about how it's like Will Smith trying to get his son Jaden Smith into movies. At least here it's just a nice cameo and not leading an entire blockbuster film.
Justin Lin also directed several episodes of Community episodes. Yes, that’s more important to me than any of these films.
He directed one of the paintball epsiodes. The Russo Brothers (Winter Solider, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame) directed the other.

Vin has really been taking this franchise too seriously of late, I remember he was saying fast 7 was going to win best picture at the Oscar's🤦♂️
He also said it for fate of the furious too lol
I knew what I was getting myself into when I sat down in front a big screen with my choc top ice cream and the lights went down, cars family, and familiar faces and a whole lots of crazy action to poke holes in. Land, air and space and magnets. Great fun at the Movies.
I haven't felt my intelligence drained that much by a movie in a while. It felt like they were depending on most people going to see it for the title and expectations of great action sequences alone, and they forgot to put the good stuff in it. The action was comically extreme, and vin Diesel is apparently a superhuman nowadays! Like there were dumb stuff before, but you took the good with the bad as Dan said, but in F9 the bad outweighed the good by a lot.
Well that's a bummer. In the previous ones they at least tried!
Remember Vin Diesal is a DND player. Each new movie his characters level up.
Couldn't have said it better myself...it felt like watching a real life car crash....i felt bad for everyone involved...it's less realistic than a video game
I remember the time when The Fast and The Furious was about racing. Now we have space adventures, invincible characters and comically implausible situations. I miss the simpler times when I had a good time watching the character growth of the MC. Fucking sad.
Not to mention the broken ass physics of this movie.......

Vin Diesel is one of my least favorite actors.
Maybe it's just me. But I love how the last movie was Vin being super serious and the world around him being a cartoon. It's ridiculously fun. I think if Vin didn't take it as seriously then the crazy stuff wouldn't seem as fun. It's like a reverse Ace Ventura. That movie is great because Jim is so crazy and weird but the world around him is so down to earth and serious so the comedy from his is heightened. Then you got "When Nature Calls" and EVERYONE is acting like a cartoon so it's not as funny because everyone is trying to be funny. Know wut I mean?
The only thing I liked about this movie was the flashback scenes with Young Dom n Jacob. Especially when they drag race with each other. I was like YES! This is what fast n furious is all about. Took me right back to the memories of part 1 n 2. They should do more of that and it was really well done in this movie.
They really gonna miss out if they don't call the 10th "fast 10 your seat belts"

Movies should be mostly grounded in reality with some unbelievability. That’s one of the major problems with F9 - a good 80% of this movie was rooted in complete unbelievability.
EXACTLY. I honestly think what they should do is reveal that at least the last couple movies were all a dream of some kind. It would be a real WTF moment, but also can ground the series more back in reality.

These are the kind of movies that I would like to see by 'editing while watching'. I wont go to a theatre but Stream it or get a physical copy and just fast forward the stuff I don't like. This is not an Auteur's passion project or an Indie modern classic, so you don't have to feel guilty about not watching it the way the creators intended. Cut out the Vin Diesel soap by just skipping ahead and enjoy.
They need to just make a Fast/Transformers crossovers.

I really like your take, Dan. It's very different from what I've heard from other critics but I can see where you're coming from.
Literally, the most unbelievable part was the SCUBA suits. Not because they wouldn't handle the pressure, but because they would not have prevented the radiation of space shred their thyroid and probably fry them.

As a mechanical engineer who watched FF franchise post-Tokyo Drift-physics like microbiologist watching Covid virus multiply under the scope, I’m glad y’all finally got a glimpse of my utter hatred of this series.
I have always gone for the cars and increasing craziness where they are involved. I do not by that Dom who is all about family, never mentioned a brother.
Remember when the Dom character used to smile and laugh? The last time that happened was twenty years ago. He’s just an angry brute now.

The discourse around this franchise is always “You already know whether you’re going to like this or not…” or “The series only gets better the crazier it goes” and those points combined makes me feel like I’m the only person that has entries I like and ones I don’t in both eras of the franchise. I know that’s not true. There have to be others. But it makes reviews harder to parse than almost any other series.
In the bombastic era, 5 was/is the franchise GOAT, I did not like 6, 7 was fine, 8 shocked me with how much I enjoyed it and Hobbs & Shaw was my least favorite of them all (yes, 2 Fast 2 Furious is better to me). I have no idea what to expect anymore. This series is all over the place for me.
