- Just out of curiosity I decided to have a look at what is inside the DJI Osmo Pocket wireless module.

above are my affiliate links on amazon where I can earn a little but it costs you no more than the actual price.

I did complain about DJI's up-selling strategy in my accessories video. Great find, thanks for your tear-down!
great, good idea, thanks for explaining
My first thoughts were it looks suspiciously like a variant of an ESP8266 or similar castellated module. Thanks for taking it to bits for peeps to see. Can't beat being nosey :D
Neffers Hi Neffers yes it does look quite close to one of those modules.
Maybe a Esp32 variant as it has Bluetooth. Not sure about the USB host though. I would expect it uses some form of host driver to connect to the camera?
Thanks for the video
Glad i'm not the only person that randomly dissasembles electronics for no other reason than to see what they look like inside... :P
Been doing it for as long as i can remember, even as a child (getting me in trouble more than once!)
FailQuail I know what you mean, I was always taking everything apart when I was a child but not always able to put things back together properly.
boys will be boys, that's how you learn
Interesting to see what’s actually inside such a small base unit.
My wireless module arrived Friday @ AU$121.10!! A simple fix for missing 1/4 thread mount, is hot glue camera ball head monitor mount lock wheel to module base, then mount to a Velbon quick release camera plate. The Velbon QR plate provides a large stable footprint when putting down on flat surface.
Thanks!
Thumbs up Indiana USA.
I would have appreciated a joystick as well. It was annoying having to purchase this module separately but the camera IMO really wasn't very expensive to begin with for what it is. I think it also may have been a way to be cheaper than gopro upfront. I will say the remote control had been very consistent, my Canon SL2 had a similar feature but it's super choppy. Thanks for the peek!
A good video as always Markus; but one small point from a personal point of view, I found the music to be a bit distracting whilst you were talking.
Thanks Paul. Its difficult to get the balance just right as some people like it some don’t. I do appreciate you letting me know.
I like to know if you can buy the circuit board. Nice video.
What would be good is do this for the external mic accessory (when it comes out) because it is proprietory - different to the GoPro etc etc. There seems to be no universal standard.
What If I'm trying to attach something on the bottom of this module, in order to have a quick release, would that interferes with the wi-fi transmission ?
Thanks for the video, Mark. I agree, the factory should've designed the product with a proper joystick, preferably an analogue type controller, like on a game console controller. That way, you'd have the ability to move the camera at variable speeds, too.
ThomasGrillo Hello Thomas, yes imagine playing a video game but having to flip a switch to select between up/down or left/right . still theres control from the screen and lets face it if you are holding it in your hand then you can just point the thing anyway.
Can you do teardown o Audio Adapter
by pealing the sticker you gave me a idea I will cut a circle with a hole in the middle of a thick foam and glue a 3/8 nut in the middle so I can used it as a stand with damping but I can still be able to put it in any type of tripod
Tony Stadele Yes that could work nicely but when in a tripod you would have to still try and keep the osmo upright as theres only the usb-c plug and those tiny sides of the wireless unit that will grip the actual camera. that could be very useful as long as you are not shaking the camera around too much i guess.
Well done video! Thank you.
I subscribe to your channel with bell.

Phillip Tatum Thank you Philip. much appreciated from markus in not so sunny Brighton UK.
liked your video, I to wondered if you could fit a screw socket on the bottom, one youtube person has stuck one on, which is ok but could be better , I am at the moment trying to print something to fit on the bottom that looks part of it , I am also in the uk
BRIAN HALL Hi Brian, I guess you could print out a thick circle the same dimention as the bottom but with the screw thread in the centre and stick it on the bottom so it just looks like part of the unit. but as you see in this video there is no place to put a screw thread into the unit as the wifi module is just under the bottom piece of plastic. I was hoping there would be some room under there before i opened it up.
@@markusfuller yes I understand what you are saying
The "sockets" are not for plugs, they are for testing the RF-performance. They act as a pass-trough when not being poked.
but could you use them as plugs to mount external antenna?
i would thinking about coonection usb type c to usb adaptor tothe buttom of the osmo pocket and to that adapter connect a usb bluetooth adapter. do you think it will work?
Sounds like an interesting experiment. I do not know if it will work or not but i guess its possible.
this solution is for less than 10usd.
Can you use the module away from the Pocket with a extension cable?
Michael Andersen Hi Michael yes I guess with a USB-C cable extension you could.
Will you be looking at the insides of the Pocket itself?
Philip Soon Hello Philip I dare not take the pocket apart incase I break it, theres no sign of screws etc and it cost me too much to make a gamble of putting it back together. maybe when the guarantee runs out next year I will have a look as i would like to see if the battery could be replaced.
I thought the same thing ... look here >>> ua-cam.com/video/UILtkpEp22c/v-deo.html
Thanks Mark for the response. No, indeed, I don’t want you to destroy your Pocket on our behalf, but like lots of folks out there I’m really concern about the longevity of the internal battery and you look fully equipped for the task☺️
Can i charging osmo pocket while it plugged to wireless module?
I think it will charge through the wireless module if the power supply is plugged into the charging unit.
Folks continue to complain about being accessorised into the poor house and DJI keeps filling out bank deposit slips. Brilliant marketing and execution.. They have their consumer demographic analyzed perfectly, unfortunately myself included. It was interesting to see the guts. Thanks.
Could you plug it into a PC and see if and what drivers Windows loads for it? 😜
Middle Kingdom Gear It will just charge the battery or allow you to download your images and videos.
@@markusfuller Oh, I meant plugging only the wifi module into a PC ...😜
Middle Kingdom Gear Oh right sorry i misread you. I just plugged it in and nothing seems to be happening though its on an imac. maybe theres something when its on a pc. im not sure.
@@markusfuller On PC typically Windows would try and find a driver, mot sure how that works on iOS. But maybe it doesn't get detected, and maybe it's the same on Windows. If it gets detected however, it would be easy to identify the Wifi chip. Thanks for trying 😎
Does the wireless module mute the bottom mic?
Robert M Hi Robert thats actually a very good question and I did not even think about that. I just had a look and there is a small ridge cut into the plastic base im guessing it’s there because of the mic.
Definitely not a cost efficient purchase.
Reverse engineering is a good way to learn.
Version II? Bring on Version II. I’ve never seen a product that screamed VERSION II WILL ANSWER ALL YOUR NEEDS as much as the Osmo Pocket. All it needs is an extra 1" to 1-1/2" in length. I love my needy Version I but always feel like I’ve been scammed by DJI.
neat - but overpriced for what it is.
If they built the Wi-Fi into the Osmo pocket, then built the Osmo pocket with a flared base so it would stand up, they would not of made an extra 50 odd pounds from you
They could easily put those components inside the camera.
Dji osmo pocket is a waste of money. There are way to many issues with this product.
It's basically garbage.
Amazing profiteering. $1 of components sold for £50+, disgraceful DGI.
