- If you want an amazing vlog setup, here is everything I found to make the DJI Osmo Pocket as close to perfect as it's going to get. It may actually be versatile enough to replace all of my expensive gear. It has stability, 4k, portability, wide angle and amazing audio. The best accessory in this build costs less than $30! It's the FreeWell Wide Angle Lens. It is a game changer.

I just bought one, thanks for the update!
I recently bought everything that you featured in this video, including the pixie tripod. If you haven’t already got this by now GET IT!!! Not only is it a super nice mini tripod, because you can push the little button (that adjusts the angle super easy) you can tilt it towards you to get a slight extension, which makes a big FOV advantage. In addition, the little button serves as strain relief for the audio connection, by just hooking one of the little curls on the red Rode Wireless Go cable. It’s a must have!!!
@@gammagonad1657 I did get it, and wish I hadn't waited! It's great! Thanks!
@@51Drones AWESOME! I knew you already wanted it, but didn't know about the bonuses. I also have the Polar Pro mount(got on sale). I like it as well, because of the optional side grip(very ergonomic). It isn't as ajustable, and my iPhone XS Max barely fits (definitely not with a case). I had to add a cold shoe mount to make it as usable for my needs. I do really like both though. HAPPY NEW YEARS!!
Please tell me exactly what your using in this comment. I have the Osmo pocket. I want to vlog and stream church services in a small church. I need better audio.
I still vlog with my gopro hero 4 silver on a 3 axis gimbal and an omni directional mic. Love it. Ivebfilmed SEMA and overland expo for years with awesome results.
I am thinking of switching to the dji osmo action camera with the front facing screen and built in stabilization. No gimbal needed.
I have been using the DJI Osmo Pocket as my entry device for filming, and have been enjoying it so far. What I like most about it I think is how both amateurs and professionals can get good use out of it with great results. Thanks for the informative video!
I’ve been on the fence about the pocket but this whole set up has me pretty excited for it now. Thanks for putting this out there
Of all the Osmo pocket videos out there, I find your videos offer the most relevant & useful info! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for a comprehensive & down to earth overview of why someone doesn’t need to spend a lot of money on high priced gear to make good videos. Content , content , content as I was once told. Good to know that philosophy is relevant still today.
I too own an Osmo Pocket and feel it's a great tool. I also have about 45 other cameras up to professional DSLRs and etc. What I find amazing anymore is the absolute stunning quality and performance you can get in such a small package. With the right audio, light, and editing the high-end camera bodies and lenses are not really necessary anymore, I think the video looks very good and the convenience it provides while holding onto the quality is a game-changer!
This was the video I was looking for . Thank you buddy
Great advice all of us on a budget. Just getting into video editing and needed the help. Thanks so much.
Great advice man!. I have just purchased one wide-angle lens while watching the video. Looking forward to receiving it.
I remember walking through that park a few years ago, my niece went to Minot State University. Great memories of my brief stay at the Grand Hotel. I'm here because I bought my first Osmo pocket today. Thanks for the info. All the best from the UK.
I will have to agree. I make how tos for internal use at our company and a few years ago we got a 4k Sony something to make super crisp professional repair video. I picked the osmo up on a whim and it changed everything about how I make them now. Stable 4k 60fps that I can take anywhere. I can now take the camera to the equipment and show an actual repair vrs having to stage one in the studio. Simply the most powerful hand held out their
Thank you Russ, this is so helpful. I got the Osmo pocket as well but haven’t been using it as I should. I think it’s because for it to be productive you need to have the correct gear. Thank you so much. I think the audio setup I wasn’t too sure of, probably do an in office physical setup with video so we can see. Also a what’s in Russ’ blogging bag video for when you go on your outdoor travails will be awesome as well. Thanks for always making great and relevant content👍🏾
Andre Benn I have this setup, definitely worth it
Ron Foy Thank you Ron
Some great tips there Russ - I've not been using my Pocket as much as I could/should, but some tips there to encourage me to push it harder
Agree with the new wide angle attachment and the updates that have sorted the auto focusing.
It’s great
As always Russ, I appreciate your down to Earth personality and rawness. I used my Osmo Pocket for my family vacation this past summer and it took some amazing photos, videos and time/motion lapses... truly a remarkable device for the size. I actually started with the Osmo Pocket and felt it checked every box for me on the "make awesome videos easily" with the least amount of tools. I quickly realized that I needed a dedicated camera to help fill in the gaps that the Osmo Pocket alone couldn't address such as the ability to zoom in for content. I ended up also getting a Lumix G85 camera that also does amazing 4K video btw, but the compact size of this and the Osmo Pocket mean that I don't have to give up anything. I can take amazing photos and videos and everything stays nice and compact.
Important note: DJI firmware update for Osmo Pocket allows for you to leave wide lens from Freewell on while gimbal calibrating . It also eliminated any of the gimbal jiggle / overload that was occurring on occasion, it’s completely gone with this update.
Great video, as always Russ. Love it when you just walk around in the scenic aerea. When you change the sound for the first time it sounds weird, very different from the first sound. The first sound is a bit warmer and the second has a high pitch, but that dissapeares when you hold your mike a little lower. When you change back from the second to the first sound the difference is also huge and you have to get used to it again for a few seconds. I bought my Osmo Pocket a month ago and I love that thing. I also have the Osmo Mobile, and that one delivers great video, but it's too big and too notable. Most people think I am checking my iPhone when I'm on a bench with the Osmo Pocket. Kids and also adults act natural then, which they would not do if they knew they're being filmed. That's it for now. Keep up the good work! And oh, you may always contact me for my address, to send me that great cap haha 🙇♀️😂👍
This is the reason I need to buy op badly 😭
Ive been working with the Pocket for a week now. I do a lot of run and gun in the jungle at night for wildlife vlogs so my priority was making the smallest rig possible ie no phone, light and mic along with a Peak Design clip. So far so good though not perfect yet but I can echo that its the best setup to start vlogging since its so easy to pick up and go with. Great vid.
I am a disabled veteran and looking to start a UA-cam channel to help other veterans with living with their pains. This was an incredible help to me as I am unable to work and limited on budget, this may provide me a starting point! Thanks and God bless!
As of October 4, 2019 there are 100 FreeWell Wide Angle units in stock at Amazon. The last batch of 100 sold out in 1 day!
its 2 hours later and its say unavailable
@@price_pred_ICT wow!
I managed to buy one of the last 4 but I lost it before i even used it. I had it on my osmo when I was removing the osmo when it was mounted on my dashboard and it fell inside the dashboard. When I tried to order it again it’s no longer available. 😫
Btw, how do you find the life of the iPhone and osmo pocket batteries? I used both once when i was hiking and i ran out of batteries fast in two hours or more and I was using it on and off.
@@TessTheTravelAddict More on Amazon in a couple of days. I don't have an iPhone, sorry.
I really liked this. I've been thinking about the Osmo Pocket, but seeing this setup may tip the scales...
Good honest setup. I have been considering the Rode setup for a few weeks and this is just more proof that good audio doesn’t have to cost thousands. Thanks for the content.
I have to agree I've never in more in love with a bit of tech!
Honestly this was a dope video. I was actually looking for an in depth review about the product and this was really useful.
I have the pocket and love it. I use it for almost everything.
have u used the Freewell wide angle lens can u share ur experience
Man the rode wireless go is such a great upgrade for almost anyone! My biggest gripe and reason I never got the Osmo pocket was the audio. I agree the wireless go brings way more freedom to create video differently. Adding in the lav mic makes it dang near perfect. Crazy how well it handles wind too
Brilliant review! We recently jumped back to our 9+ edge from our canon with a gimbal and are seriously looking at the pocket. Your package suggestions make perfect sense for us.
Huge thanks, James and Kim
I have almost the identical setup. Except I use the InstaMic Pro. Sound is supreme.
I'm in! Got my sub and I'm heading to Amazon! Just bought the osmo a couple weeks ago.
I just purchased the DJI Osmo for my video production classroom. This will be a total game changer for my students projects. Your video also got me thinking of ways I could use the DJI Osmo to record lessons for observations. Recording my lessons with the Osmo will allow my students to view my classroom content if they aren't in my class during a certain day during the week.
There is another game changer in the works. Get your wallet out ... again!
The best cameras are always the ones you have/carry with you...same holds true for Vlogs...thanks for making it simple and cost effective.
Certainly considering this set up.
I was disappointed with my OSMO pocket "at 1st" firmware and several accessories later I do like the OSMO. have yet to buy the mic adaptor, overpriced. Keep up the show, I like it. No BS.
Dear 51 drones, as a total newbie to this Osmo set up I am eternally grateful to you and wish to thank you for all the links that have made my shopping much easier.
I am hooked immediately to your channel and have obviously subscribed. Keep up the great work and enjoy that festival of yours 🍺
Thanks for this video. Some great recommendations for gear that I will be checking out. I've got the Osmo Pocket but have been looking to understand the accessories I need to use with it, and this has answered some of those questions. Great stuff! Enjoy the festival
That's a mega set up, think I'm going to have to get the Diety Lav
RODE has the SmartLav+ that matches up with the Wireless Go VERY WELL! That is my setup for the Osmo. Audio will also be better with the mic NOT under your hoodie.
Thank you... the information you gave is exactly what I needed to make up my mind. I was hesitating on ordering this camera now I’ll pull the trigger.
I've been running the same setup for about 4 months....Its truely the best setup for vloging...and actually a great BTS camera also...
Personaly I use Zennheiser wireless lavs and a Zoom H6 audio recorder. Great audio quality, but need to sync in post....I film with an Osmo with Zenmuse X5.
Love my Osmo Pocket! Use it for our channel for most videos! Great video!!
Thanks for the info... been debating getting an OSMO pocket trying to figure out what accessories... your video helped!!!
Just got my Pocket yesterday. Looking forward to putting it to use on a cruise next week. Great tips and very timely. Thanks!
Buying one of these on Friday! I use my 80D currently and I think I’ll still use it for My fancy shots.
But I think the osmo pocket will work a thousand times better for the talking head parts!
Update: what a brilliant piece of camera! Just made my first vlog with it and I’m in love 😍
I'm going to buy one as well I have a GoPro 4 and a GoPro 5 I still use my old school flip camera and I have a Samsung as well but this looks like a cool camera and somebody I want to get a drone I have sunglasses as well that are fun to be with
Ok you just changed my life.
Thank you this was really helpful. Defo going for the rode Wireless. Considering this camera but seems like a lot of ad ons 😬
I for one very much appreciate entry level equipment reviews, thanks for taking the time. 🙏👍🏻👍🏻
Never can go wrong with saving some money.
Would be cool with bluetooth 5.0 for having a wireless microphone to skip the adapter, etc
in snoppa pocket
Thanks for making this video. I've been researching for the past 2 months. Your whole setup is awesome.
*** 3 Granddaughters and new way to video them!! 65 years old who loves videoing his 3 beautiful granddaughters doing what they do best :) This setup is so good... BIG THANKS!! ***
Russ, I feel like I've been on a similar journey this past few months, testing a bunch of different mic configurations. A couple of thoughts to share: In my use case, I'm often trying to capture an outdoor experience along with some commentary...so voice quality is important, but I also don't want to lose the ambient sounds (like birds chirping, cicadas, etc)...so for me the internal Pocket mic is adequate MOST of the time for that particular situation - a lav mic just would not adequately capture ambient sounds (which is obviously WHY you'd use one when you're wanting the focus almost exclusively on the voice). But the other thought I have about your setup is that when you add that Ulanzi bracket and cellphone to the rig...well...it just seems to violate the whole reason why you'd get the Pocket in the first place. Extreme compact portability. Maybe I just need to try it... But I also have used (prior to getting the Pocket) the Osmo Mobile 2 with my Galaxy S9+ and have gotten great results with that (about the size of your Pocket/bracket rig, but also about $250 cheaper since you don't need the Pocket or the audio adapter). Plus there's the added benefit with the Osmo Mobile (I think they're shipping the 3 now?) of when the phone camera tech improves, you just start using the new phone with it. Oh...and ridiculously good battery life on that thing... Hmmm...why am I using the Pocket again? Oh right! Portability! But see how this brings me back to square 1? Anyway, like I said, maybe I just need to try it! I do really appreciate your honest opinions, my friend...plus you have the 'heart of a teacher' which is also a quality I look for in channels I subscribe to. Keep up that great work!
All great points!
ReeWray I should have read your post BEFORE I posted mine because I was thinking exactly the same thing. I'm on the fence about getting the pocket since I already have the ZHIYUN Smooth 2 and use it with my iphone. I get the idea of convenience, size and portability, but once you bring the phone into the equation it defeats the purpose.
@@MichaelKrisa might give the Hero8 a serious look. I have both and now used the Hero8 about 75%of the time due to easier more precise shot framing... And just better ruggedness for out on the trails... Did a video comparing them a month ago that might be helpful for you.
ReeWray Have you got the link to that comparison? Thank you
@@MichaelKrisa ua-cam.com/video/viUtvwOLAuA/v-deo.html
I wish the next version of the Pocket to have the Hasselblad camera on the Mavic 2, but with 4k60. I'd like to use the Moment Animophic lens for my wide angle setup.
Not much wrong with the OP camera. But V2 should have wifi and mic jack built in.
You mean lots of firmware updates but their is no next version on Osmo Pocket
I wish the same thing for the osmo pro 2 i wish to have the x7 camera on the osmo pro 2
@@justy085 how do you know there is no osmo pocket 2?
Best video for actually giving a good review on products! Just got my osmo pocket and I didn’t know what accessories were good to get so thanks!!
Thanks for putting this up dude. Been looking to get decent vlogging stuff for my Osmo and this was super helpful.
There are several aftermarket choices for the Osmo audio and the ones I tried all work saving you 30$ or more. Another benefit for Osmo and strike against GoPro.
Can you use the mic adapter along with phone connected as monitor? I think it's not possible. So the system is still crippled
Ázsiába. Yes you can. What you can’t do is use the mic adapter and the WiFi adapter at the same time. Which is a stupid oversight especially if you want to use the extension pole.
@@martinjplant my problem exactly. However, for me cable + mic adapter doesn't work either. So I have the rod, wifi adapter, mic adapter, yet I use the osmo action for vlogging and can't get proper audio 🙄
@@ÁzsiábaSzakadtam Lav to your phone or to something like an H1 then sync in post is the only solution currently if you want to use the wifi adapter at the same time. I already have an H1 and Rode Lav so that is what I do. Auto syncing takes seconds in FCPX.
@@martinjplant yes that's what I'm doing now. However, I think I've been a good boy and followed DJIs money squeezing strategy and bought all the gadgets the lack of which crippled the Pocket from the beginning. Now it's still crippled, so afyrt a year I'm getting a little annoyed. If you get what I mean...🙄
I think the stand alone audio quality of the Osmo Pocket is still pretty good by itself by listening to your video... yea it sounds different but it was still good...
You’re absolutely right, especially because you can a joust the volume in the pro settings.
Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Hi Russ.
It's that old adage "the best camera is the one you have on you!" There's is also another phrase that comes to mind whenever I see people who have all the "top gear" and want you to know that.
All the gear and no idea!
Your post is proof you don't need all that expensive stuff to do UA-cam, most people will be viewing the content on a smartphone, so it doesn't need to be super high-res equipment.
I too am looking into improving audio, but I would like it for skiing, as well as vlogging. Most of the action camera audio boosting requires you to sacrifice the waterproofing of the camera, it would be great if an action camera company got together with someone like Rode to integrate their receiver into the camera, that would be great!
Ah I agree with you! Story is super important☝️
So glad you spoke about your audio set up in depth! I love deity's mics and lavs, I'm moving into a wireless set up and I've been researching these exact same items. The osmo, the ulanzi, the whole deal. Awesome video it verified everything I needed to hear and see! 👌👍
Does Freewell make and ND filter that will sit on top of the wide angle lens? I love the wide angel but need ND most of the time. Thanks for the great video.
No
Yeah I’m hoping they make something like this as well.
When the mosquito hit the face at 4:06 I felt that.
you are a nerd or an alien specie
Thank you for this video. I have been considering this camera as a vlogging camera to set up my own channel. This helped alot seeing what you did to make it work. 👏👏
Excellent video... I have been looking for months for a new kit. I have gone through cranes, new DSLR, mirror less, you name it but now I have decided to get the DJI Osmo pocket and the Rode GO. Cheers!
I notice several times in your video that the Ulanzi bracket came into the frame when panning to your left. That seems to be a major flaw IMHO. Did you notice it @51Drones?
I think that was the mic, not the bracket
That was the Rode Go, which sticks out way in front of the phone. That means changing the angle you hold the Pocket.
Worth buying in March 2020?
I'm planning to buy it..
Absolutely!
It's still worth buying in December 2020, even though the 2nd one is out!
@@officialWWM exactly! For the price it's a far better deal
Very well done. This has answered a lot of questions I had as to whether this setup could ever really be "completed." Indeed it can. And I will. I just need the Freewell and the phone mount. Thank you for that!
Thanks so much for your tips and tricks very informative. What a great setup on a reasonable budget.
Shout out for the Mr Beast hoodie
With respect, I beg to differ on the audio side.
For general ambience for general filming, the on camera audio is very clean and your voice was nicely mixed.
For vlogging, to suppress background noise, the adapter is better, but your voice sounds definitely BOOMY!
Good work👍 About to dive into the Osmo universe 😎
I have the Pocket and now the Action plus drones to expand my video ability for my research. Glad to see the use by you for diy beginners.
Just started watching you in the past few weeks. - Appreciate all of your video (and audio) tips!
4:07 that moment when a mosquito lands on his left cheek. I can't. slap that damn thing. now!
Disabled, no insurance, little income. You may have helped me with a solution to start blogging! Let me check the prices.
Great video! I was using my a6300 for my UA-cam camera and finally switched over to the osmo pocket as the updates made it better and better. I use the polar pro grip system and it allows me to mount my rode video micro to the bottom and I have full field of view. Thanks again!
Love this setup. If/when I get back to blogging I'll definitely refer to this video! Thank you
Thanks for this video, I have been in two minds about the pocket and vlog set up. But this has just helped confirm it. Thank you, great video and love the audio!!
just bought the osmo pocket and was worried about the sound quality now thanks to you I have info to make it sound superb Thank you Brother your videos are always informative

Thanks
You know what, the audio comparison is so helpful. Was debating on upgrading audio, I personally do not mind the audio without the RODE. So knowing this is sooo helpful to see what I really want to spend my money on!
I was on the fence about buying osmo pocket but i went and bought your setup and i feel good about it now, thanks!!
Thank you for this video! Just got my osmo pocket and I'm gonna try your set up!
Thanks for the info. Your recommendations will help me decide which camera to get
I just got an Osmo Pocket over a week ago and plan to use it on my trip next week. I like your set up and will purchase the accessories you mentioned 👍👍
Thanks for this, I've been searching for better audio solutions with the Pocket for a while, your set up seems like the way to go.
Helpful video! Recently bought one myself so I’ve been looking to see what people have been using with it!
THANK YOU!!!!! This was a great vlog. Just the info I needed. No joke.. thank you.
I've got the Osmo Mobile 3 and this vid had convinced me to get the Pocket. Cheers fort the advice.
Great vlog thx, I love my Osmo and I totally appreciate the gear recommendations.
Great review Russ, I have been back and forth on getting the pocket but this video just put it on the front burner of consideration. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the great work.
Osmo Action is also good for vlogging. Great stabilization at 4k/60fps and it has a wide angle lens. I record audio externally and sync it in post
I always enjoy your videos and all your hard work you put into them! Thank you
Thanks for this video. I'm thinking about vlogging for the very first time and I was looking into this camera. I have no idea what to vlog or what content I want to do yet, i just want to have fun and be creative. Thank you so much.
Im just now buying the pocket 3 Russ thanks so very much this has truly helped me to becide on some light portable road gear for my Drone stuff thank you
I thought this video was old but see nee post here as of late, jumping on the osmo pocket bandwagon late but I think its gonna be fun
Great description of your gear! Thank you, I am thinking of getting DJI Osmo for my vlog and I’m just trying to come up with solutions for the sound problem and for combining the phone, the camera and the rest of the stuff
Russ, great name by the way, I feel the same as you. The Osmo is now my go to camera! Just purchased the rode wireless and the Diety mic! Awesome! Thanks for the research and commentary!!! Much appreciated!
Great video! Thank you so much for the suggestions.
Thanks for the tips, bought a pocket this morning and ordered a bunch of your recommended accessories, thanks for the insights!
Awesome! You will love it!
Russ, you do a wonderful job in dissecting equipment wanted or needed in creating a better video, keep it up man.
I really love the Rode Go as well. - This is a great set up. After getting the iPhone 11 pro max, I am thinking, all I need is the phone! The audio is even decent. But, seriously, the video is smooth and stable, their colors finally look great and I have four lenses built in now. It isn’t a phone with a camera anymore. It is a legitimate camera.
