On their next album The Paradigm Shift, they retain some very light elements of the whole Dubstep/EDM stuff, but it’s very much a turn back towards a more traditional Korn sound. It’s also the album where Head (one of their two founding guitarists) returns to the band. The last album to feature all 5 founding members was Take A Look In The Mirror. But from The Paradigm Shift onwards, it’s back to the original line-up minus the original drummer David Silveria. So from here until their most recent 2022 album, it’s 4/5 of the original line-up and a sound that is still sort of experimental, but much more in-line with the more classic, traditional Korn sound.

Okay, hear me out... I kind of love that this album exists. I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything, but it's a cool leap in a strange new direction that I'd argue is executed well. It's not like the songs are shit, I think people just dislike the concept because of metal-based pride. It sounds great, and all the songs are really fun and not much more. It also got the adventure out of their system that, along with Head coming back, would steer them to making two of their heaviest albums and then two of their best albums. I'd say I prefer this album to the next two because it's more interesting and got more going on, but overall this is where I start caring about KoRn again. Up the KoRn!

You worded it really well, I think a lot of people (myself included) kinda downplay this album just because it's a "Korn" album. It has that label on it. As a fun dubstep album for some full of energy tracks it's actually not bad, I can see some of these songs growing on me.

This was Jonathan Davis' pet project. Korn III was a return to Korn's "roots" with producer Ross Robinson. Davis hated making it for various reasons and the album didn't sell well. When he was teenager he was a DJ and he's a fan of a lot music genres. So when dubstep took off he liked it and they started experimenting with those sounds to see what they could make. Jonathan didn't want to revisit the past, he wanted to see what else they could do. They were happy with the demo tracks they made and decided to make a full album.
This is JD's baby, it never would have been made without him. He put a ton of work into it, contacting all of the EDM producers and co-producing every song. Skrillex came in first, they asked him to produce the album but he was too busy to accept. He introduced JD to many of the producers that made it on the album. This reinvigorfated JD's love for music and then Head came back and he basically said "nice experiment but our guitars are going to be front and center". From there on they put the electronics on the back burner with more restained usage, which they've always done. Most people don't realize 808s are on the first album, for example (Helmet in the Bush if I remember correctly).

The next four albums you will like better than the last four you listened to. This was basically their last unpopular album. One of the main reasons why the last 4 albums sounded the way it did was because of their lack of sound mainly due to the lead guitarist Head not being there so to make up for that they tried to add to their sound by doing all this electronic experimental stuff that backfired. The next 4 albums Head returns and the heaviness is brought back to somewhat just with more of an updated electronic futuristic twist to it. But I think you’ll definitely love the next 4 more than the last 4 you reacted to. Keep up the good work!!!

When you start their next album pay close attention to the drums! In my opinion it’s the one where Ray doesn’t attempt to recreate the original drums of David like on Korn 3 and instead does his own style. He is the backbone to what I consider the modern korn sound. Also Head returning is by far the best part of the next 4 records in my opinion.

I get your point about this being a dubstep album just featuring Jonathan and you don’t hear the other members . But actually there is a lot going on from all the members that creates that sound. And the vocal layers are insane. There are multitracks available where you can hear everything separately and Munky does some really creative and cool stuff with his guitar, drums are mostly just cymbals tho and the bass is very buried in the mix because dubstep is a lot about bass. It just works as a whole track rather than you can pick each instrument separately

It is true that at face value this feels more like a Jonathan Davis collaboration album, but there is a lot happening in the background with the rest of the members.
This is not my cup of tea specially being a long time fan who follows Korn since they released their first album.

In regards to this album: It was simply an experiment and the last before Head came back to the band. Head is the member of the band who is obsessed with true heaviness, and when he came back in 2013, they went back to their old sound and completely capitalized it on the album The Serenity Of Suffering, which is in a lot of peoples minds, the heaviest album they have ever done. From the very first 10sec, it hits the gas pedal, and never stops. CHECK IT OUT!

I agree with you that it would've been more appropriate for Jonathan to have put this under his name as the other members were sorely missed. And yet, I love nearly every song here. I was the perfect demographic in my teens as I was in love with dubstep. Even now that I'm not so much, I absolutely love the songwriting on this and think it's some of Jonathan's most odd works even just vocally speaking. Radiohead completely did away with traditional instruments and every member picked up electronics for Kid A. So that was drastic. And then Trent pretty much made solo dealios with NIN with things like the Ghosts album. So idk, some bands and vocalists just need to clear their head with something strange I suppose.

Around the time of this release, I was already tuned out of Korn. The album was jarring in 2011 and I never gave this a proper listen until years later.
To me this album actually sounds like a Korn album and is definitely responsible for the Modern era of Korn. Without this album Korn wouldn't have reignited the spark from under them, the way that it did for their later career. Take a Look in the Mirror was the last album I thought felt like a Korn album.
    Early Days:
Self-titled, Life is Peachy, Follow the Leader, Issues, Untouchables, Take a Look in the Mirror.
    Experimental Era:
See You on the Other Side, Untitled, Korn III, Path of Totality.
    Modern Era:
Paradigm Shift, Serenity of Suffering, The Nothing, Requiem.
Path of Totality isn't an instant classic, but it is important release in their career.

This is a very important KoRn album. They, in my opinion, had lost their way following multiple albums without Head (Lead guitar) & although they were experimenting their music was ultimately becoming less dynamic and flat.
This album was a reset. They found a replacement for the missing dynamics & creativity from Head in EDM/Dubstep and it works, even if it's not typical for KoRn. Without this album I think KoRn fizzles out but this really kick-started a new life for KoRn & they've put out great albums since.
I'd go as far as saying their The Nothing album is their best & you could (!) argue their latest 4 albums are as good as their first.
    Enjoy the revival!

This is great!!! I think this is the first review that I have watched where I finally see uncertainty in your expressions. Being someone who is completely into the hard rock/metal genre, I have to admit that some club/dub step songs cross my path and I'm like, I can get into that. Korn and dub step...plus if you know JD then you know he has always meddled with those sounds and is a DJ so it makes sense for him to do an albums like this. I however, agree that I am torn as well that this album is not bad at face value but the label that it is korn is where I am like, is it really??? I have seen videos where they are performing these songs live, even though I see the band putting on a show...i'm like this has to be tape rolling cause I still do not believe it. I really do like the skrillex collabs but my fav is get up. It is funny you mention NIN vibe on one song and I think it is the start of kill mercy within is where I hear that vibe. My favorites are let's go, get up, and bleeding out for sure!
After this is where Head comes back into the band and they start infusing the new korn sound with a touch of the old korn sound. It is funny cause once Head left the band that is when they came out with SYOTOS, untitled, 3 RWYA, and this album and they all had an experimental vibe to them(beatles era). Once Head came back it was like the band came full circle but with the idea of lets keep a new sound and run with it. Excited to see the reviews for the last 4 albums!!!

The thing that bothered me about this album wasn't that they experimented with a different sound, it's that this is like that Steve Buscemi "Hey fellow kids" meme in audio form. They started dressing like club kids and doing this sound that was clearly grabbing from what was just the hottest thing at the time and as a fan that just destroyed me because this band used to be the ones setting the trends rather than following them. I kinda like Get Up as a one off collab but it didn't need to be a full Korn record. It especially hurts them now that this sound is so outdated just a decade later.

you have to remember to put this album in its time in place of a 2011 capsule. It's amazing, maybe didn't or doesn't track well over time but as with Korn they are always a step a head of the curve. Its just Dub Step (and Skrillex too), fell off the map as quickly as it came. I think of it as the Ska of the 2010's lol. When this album dropped it was dope asf. And I'm one of the Korniest fans you'll find lol

you're absolutely right about calling this a Korn album since JD vocals are synonymous with the style of music they created. It should just be looked at as a JD solo album featuring members of Korn and so on. I saw JD solo live and it just wasn't the same as seeing him with Korn. I've been a fan of Korn since that very first album and like most bands have seen their music change over the years but just couldn't get into this release. But that's just me, and they didn't make this record for me. lol

The band played their instruments through the dubstep artists mixers. This album was necessary after the band's miserable experience with 3. They had to go in a totally new direction to get back their creative mojo. Serenity of Suffering and Requiem are our favorite KoRn albums.

I think Kill mercy within, Narcissistic Cannibal, Get up, Way too far and Let's go are cool. And, of course, the bonus track Tension is very cool and "korny", I recommend you to listen to, better than most of the album.
You are now near of one of their best albums: The Serenity of Suffering :D

If you wanna know where the KoЯn sound went listen to “Love and Death”, there first album is “Between Here and Lost” before you listen to the next KoЯn album. Please please please;) It’s Heads album from 2013 and next you’re going to listen to “The Paradigm Shift” that came out in 2014 with Head back in KoЯn again.

Can't wait for when you get to the next album, they finnally make great music again, not that this experimental phase of korn was bad, they totally had some bangers on this era. But it's 100% better when Head comes back for the next album. They don't go back to their roots exactly but you could say that they implement everything they learned from the experimental era to their sound and mixed with the old stuff.

So this might be a hot take, it might be the common consensus; not sure which, but for me, this is the point in time in my life where I couldn't look at Korn the same way again. The main reason obviously is the sound. I never could get into dubstep; it's not for me. There is another reason though; one that's sort of more sentimental and personal. An ex-girlfriend from 2012 gave me a copy of this CD and I didn't get around to listening to it (see reason 1) and after we broke up, I had even less reason to listen to it. I will say their newer material is starting to pull me back in though.

This was a weird Korn album but I definitely salute them for trying something new. I give it a 6.5/10. I would have liked it better if they went for a industrial electronic sound like skinny puppy or NiN sound. rather than a dubstep edm sound.

i remember listening to this when it came out and thinking JD's voice and lyrics overall just didnt fit with the dubstep pounding behind his vocals lol but some songs like "Get up" and "narcisistic cannibal" was cool i liked the chorus on those, as a fan i was like wtf has happened to this band.

This album was insane when it came out. I remember I couldn't believe these two worlds were coming together! It hit me by surprise! I wished there was more guitar on some of the tracks. The dubstep buried alot of Korn's sound in certain areas.

While i think like most people that dubstep is really dead, i think that what Korn did here is kinda unique and while it can be a little cringy at times it's a good and memorable album, not good like Issues or Life Is Peachy kinda good, but still at least pretty decent with catchy choruses
