  • 4 Types of Low Back Pain (Patterns)
    1. Discogenic
    Generally reproduced with lumbar spine flexion and relieved with lumbar spine extension
    Recommended to encourage short walks, extension-based exercises, sitting upright
    Avoid lumbar spine flexion in the short term and prolonged sitting
    2. Facet Pain
    Generally reproduced with lumbar spine extension and relieved with flexion
    Recommend knees to chest, standing with a foot stool, sitting.
    3. Compressed Nerve
    Generally from irritation of the nerve roots in lumbar spine which may cause leg-dominant symptoms
    Z-Lie may assist with symptom control, changing positions, etc.
    4. Neurogenic Claudication (Symptomatic Spinal Stenosis)
    Generally from ischemia of the nerve roots after walking a relatively short distance
    Recommend using walking poles, taking breaks, sitting, leaning forward to help alleviate
    This is a very simplified way to attempt to categorize low back pain. Some individuals may have more overlap between these patterns.
    Chronic pain ( more than 3 months) tends to be more complicated with other factors such as sleep, beliefs, thoughts, recovery, supports, emotions, playing a role and may be more about tissue sensitivity versus an underlying pathology or a combination therein of.
