  • Howard Schubiner, MD, is a clinician, author and researcher who has conducted ground-breaking research on a treatment plan that can resolve, rather than manage, chronic pain.
    Pain isn’t what you think. Neuroscientists are now explaining pain in a way that is counterintuitive to both lay people and physicians. A significant proportion of individuals with chronic pain do not have structural abnormalities, but have pain due to learned neural pathways in the brain. Dr. Schubiner, author of Unlearn Your Pain and co-author of upcoming book, Hidden from View, reviews the current state of brain research and a new form of psychological treatment for fibromyalgia that is superior to the standard treatments.

      I learned the relationship between emotions and muscle tension as I released muscle tension using yoga / meditation. This has been known for thousands of years and hardly anyone ever listened! This work saved my life! I’m a musician and couldn’t play music for 3 years. I was losing the will to go on, I couldn’t cook for myself and was basically bedridden. Since then I’ve climbed mountains, toured playing drums, and live an active and busy life doing all the things I’m passionate about. If you are struggling right now and debating whether to look further into this work I implore you to do so! I was given a book by dr Sarno 2 years before I began to recover but decided it was nonsense and stopped because I had a “real” problem (of course my problem was real but I believed erroneously that sarno’s work only applied to “made up” problems). I’m saying this to say I understand if it’s hard for you to see that this could apply to you but believe me it probably does! It’s worth a sincere go at diving into and accepting this material. Sending love to you all :)

    Such a shame that most of society has no knowledge of these concepts, particularly Med Schools. Dr. Schubiner, Dr. John Sarno, these guys are the true pioneers in this area of medicine and pain. If you have chronic pain, read Schubiner's and Sarno's books. You will be cured if you do what they tell you to do. I couldn't even walk for more than 30 seconds at one point in my mid-30's, now I'm doing Spartan obstacle course races in my mid-40's.

      @BlueRidgeBoiler Рік тому +5

      @@leek1002 The "injury" I was told that was probably causing my pain was a lower back disc bulge between my L4-L5 lumbar. Had an MRI to reveal it. Most anyone would believe that is the case because it's all that traditional doctors know. However, after reading these books and understanding Sarno and Schubiner's theories and clinical work, I figured out that a confluence and build up of life stress and emotional distress were causing my pain. I was about to get engaged, introducing my now wife to my family (difficult family), had lost my job and was searching for a new, moving across country, and taking on a ton of life stress. All of this stress, was building in my unconscious mind, and until I got more conscious of it, focused on the fact that this was the source of the pain, I had excruciating back pain and sciatica. It was like lightening going down my leg to my feet when I tried to walk. My fear of the pain only made it worse. I was taking painkillers for a couple of weeks until I had recalled Sarno's Healing Back Pain book, then I took it from there. It took about 2-3 months to shake the pain more fully, but once I read these books and understood what was causing my pain, I started to get active again. Today I'm 50 and I run as much as I want, lift weights, exercise 6 days a week w/out pain. When it tries to come back with stress, I realize what's causing it and it will go away. TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome) appears in my arm, neck, shoulder, knee, any place the brain tries to distract you from feeling emotional pain and wants you to feel physical pain. It's sort of an unevolved part of our brains that think it's protecting us, even though that physical pain is so real and excruciating. You don't have to solve your problems or stress, just be aware it.

While I was watching that video - and experiencing the sudden realization that there was nothing actually wrong with my back - ten years of chronic back pain, with occasional debilitating spasms that would have me bedridden for days.........faded almost immediately. I had resigned to accept back pain would be with me for life. I'm a cynic and a skeptic. And almost instantly the pain went away. I am literally speechless. I looked in the mirror and I said "There is nothing wrong with my back." Almost a miracle. Thank you so much to these doctors.

      Did you look in the mirror and say that there was nothing wrong with your back before or after your back pain went away? (I have Dr. Schubiner's book and one of Dr. Sarno's, but I'm just curious.)

      @@jessicaveganjessica2208 After. But the pain went away in the middle of watching the video. Now it's 7 months later and all the pain is back (no pun intended). So, I'm not so sure anymore. May have been a short term placebo affect.

      @@rogsolaris7411 I'm sorry the pain came back. The books talk about that sometimes. They also say that some people need only to hear the theory of all of this; some people need a bit more work on it and others still need more work. Dr Sarno's book talks about that. There's a good documentary, Pain Brain and a website to go with it, in case you want to check it out.

    This information is a huge blessing to me. I will try suggested interventions. 22 yrs ago I had my first cancer. Triple negative breast. Chemo followed. One year later different kind of breast cancer in remaining breast. So, another total mastectomy. 8 years later, endometrial cancer. Not a metasastisis. It did not heal well. Fibromyalgis hit me hard! Took over year to heal. Lost my teaching position because of it. My life was teaching. My marriage failing. Four years ago recto-sigmoid cancer. Chemo again. Body pain everywhere! Flares could equal months in bed as walking unbearable. Major depressive Disorder diagnosed. Saw pain Dr. yesterday. He gave me cortisone in hips for bursitis and 2 injections lower back. First time ketermine. Recommended Medium CBD Drops. At least he respected my pain descriptions. Told me fibromyalgis would likely be lifelong. Pain got worse 18 months ago when husband of 50 years told me he had never been faithful! Not during engagement...slept with my "best friend", and gave me an STD. Told me his Dr. Friend wanted me to take pills he gave me so my yeast infection wouldn't be passed between us! I had just turned 18. He was 23! After marriage another "friend" and strangers. One secretary for 4 years in afternoons! Then more and a confessed porn addiction. Lies upon lies! 52 years! I was married and he never was! He was even a minister! My pain increased exponentially. He quit working at 43.. Right after I got degree! Never worked again. Laid all on me. Even with children with real disabilities. Ex: Type 1 diabetes. Family now divided. Oh, and he put a loaded pistol to his temple, cocked, saying, he wanted to die. 911 got me out of there. SWAT surrounded house. I was a terrified mess! Moved in with sons family as he refused to give up his 17 guns until I could feel safe. Just keep at daughters. Hunt if want. Go to gun club, just none at home. He refused. Divorce now on Dec 11. He filed Nov 30 last year. It was date of our first date! Then he, HE has stretched out a divorce that should have taken 2 months, for 11 1/2 months. I pray your research helps me. And yes, as a child i was always terrified. Stepfather molested me. God bless your kind heart, Sir. Please, pray I will conquer pain 50% or more💙

    This view overlooks many studies. Over 70% of the nerve fibres in the body are designed to do one thing - register pain. If those nerve fibres or nerve routes are damaged, they send aberrant signals.
    I challenge this doctor to walk into a brachial plexus injury clinic and tell them their pain is based on stressful life events - and not the nerves that have been avulsed from their spinal chord after an accident.
    We also know that biological changes occur both in nerve fibres and at the spinal chord with nerve injuries - these things lead to neuropathic pain.

    • @thewoodster8607
      @thewoodster8607 4 роки тому +5

      But those damaged nerves and those torn away are genuine structural problems e.g. the pain being experienced can be definitely linked to the damage. This therapy is not intended for those instances.

I retraced back to when all of my pain started and when it continued to get worse and it really does seem like it's stress related/environmental. I've seen numerous doctors that would prescribe unncessary medicine only to make matters worse while not having an effect on my pain. I started to see an amazing physical therapist that started to turn my pain around and she recommended the work of Adrianne Louw which lead me here. Someone held me in their office for almost a year, because of recommendations by him and his colleagues saying it is your emotions causing pain and fatigue. Eventually I fell down in street and in the ER they told me the reason for all your fatigue and pain has been a blood (severe) problem that I was treated for 3-4 months and my life changed. It was really traumatic to deal with people who promote these ideas, holding me from the right treatment and I could die falling having accident. That is why I m very skeptical to these people because they create a perception that holds patients from seeking the right investigations. it hurts so much hearing he says: continue doing those physical activities because it doesnt harm. Well I am a living case of what they told me but they eventually realised under the right lab works it was actually a harmful issue and .. it hurts me when I remember how they behaved with me for that period.

      @@anasazirose It is not appropriate to name here. I write this INFOMATION below for the purpose of helping everyone watching this space. Many MEDICAL doctors throughout the history, like any other person, went through illnesses that were not helped by other doctors. They gradually learned the cause of their illness and since then became advocates linking every thing to that cause. This includes people like Dr Max Gerson (creating Gerson therapy resulting from his migraines), Dr Gabor Mate (for his childhood trauma issues), Dr Sarno (having back pain and then finding it was emotional), and this man who refers to his headaches in his graduate years resulting in his book and work on these issues. They are good people but their problem is being emotional with their past then becoming advocates to help others. On their path they help people who by coincidence have had similar issues using them as examples but they- along with people who follow them- gaslight many others. Along similar lines, there are people like Dr Bassel VK who wrote Body keeps the score. He didnt have health problems like these people. When you read his books or listen to his videos he never uses such a language. He speaks as a scientist, highlighting that not all trauma results in chronic pain and not all CP is the result of trauma and so on. This is a far different way of speaking resulting in a far different medical approach to helping or hurting people . There are also others like a doctor in Stanford (Jennifer SW). Overall, I did not see a good scientist publishing in top journals to link everything to everything.

    Funny, I learned this exact stuff from another source, my Kaiser pain clinic in Roseville, CA. The person running the psychological part of the program at Kaiser was a disciple of Dr. John Sarno like this guy Schubiner, and Dr. Schecter is another one. This is great stuff, it lead me to learn IFS (internal family systems), mindfulness, and guided meditation and master classes on the Calm app, and also movement therapies like Tai Chi and Qi Gong. (* I also benefitted having read Dr. Sarno books and had reduced pain just from assimilating the information in those books.) But, you have to do the work, and that is Not easy. Never give up though.

    Wow! What a great presentation. I especially love your comments right at the end! Pain is a teacher as long as we have the tools to be able to do the uncomfortable work of looking at it and learning from it. I believe pain is a gift from God, because God meets us in our pain.

    What about people who actually DO have structural problems that cant be fixed? I've seen almost 30 different specialists and nothing has been proposed to help me. Tried so many meds and therapies that there are none left. My body and mind has been ravaged and not 98% of doctors don't care. The couple others tried and we failed. Nobody will even give me pain medication anymore, and I've tried everything. The truth is the medical system is completely broken for anything other than mild discomfort, and that will often go away despite any doctor's intervention. Useless, all of them.

    Sir, problem with treating patients is very rarely we get patient who understand ahs insight to receive the instruction. Patients are stuck with physical/ organic problem will go on doctor shopping. At least this is what I see in my general practice . Most of my patients are above 50 yrs and I deal with huge burden og chronic pain.

    I'm not sure about this...I.had back surgery twice from over doing things. If I hadn't had the the first surgery I wouldnt been able to walk. I stopped listening to my pain and got on with normal life as a result ended up in hospital.

    His reference to the Australian RSI "epidemic" was interesting. Was RSI caused by disability payments being available(what the Dr. implies)? Or did RSI cases go down because the Government cut of disability payments and people just shut up and went back to work and suffered, because they had to to feed their family? I think this guy is full of it.
