The reason why exposed carbon fiber on Hyper cars is SO damn expensive is because EVERY SINGLE body panel has to match the carbon fiber wave and pattern, it's a VERY hard thing to do, with paint you don't have to worry about any kind of imperfections, but if there is a little thing wrong with exposed carbon fiber, you have to make the whole panel again.
I believe last time they talked about this they failed to address that detail and someone explained the exact same thing in the comments, and it got a fairly high amount of upvotes. Once again they touch upon this subject and fail to either learn or acknowledge this fact and once again someone points it out in the comments. Maybe next time they'll include it in the video... 3rd time is the charm
I was wondering too if it’s difficult to properly preserve the composite pieces because composites degrade in sunlight similar to plastics. If there’s not a strong UV protectant on there, those panels start looking a little rough after a few years… but I suppose most of these cars aren’t outside much lol
Not sure if it counts as a paintjob, but the CCXR Trevita was also insanely expensive, and only two were ever made. The while carbon fiber was very difficult to make, and were an innovation at the time. One sold for close to 5 million dollars, while a normal CCXR costs about a million US. Great video as always, guys.
I would thoroughly love to see you guys paint the civic you're pumping money into. That would be a great episode. Bonus points if you let viewers pick the color!
There's no way the diamonds weighed a total of 2.5k. It'd basically be dust already. My guess is they used 1000 diamonds between .2-1k. That would put the paint in the $1-2 million range. Although, saying it takes 1000 diamonds could also mean they purchased the dust like Nolan said, significantly reducing the price. Alternatively, they could be lab-grown diamonds. Which would offer the same quality at a 30-50% discount. My guess is the diamonds alone cost $500,000-$1,000,000
Chat GPT didn't understand what Nolan asked, which was for the price of 1000 * 0.25ct diamonds. So, if they only needed 250ct of diamond dust to paint the car, I found a vendor that sells 5ct of diamond dust for $40 USD. That would be $2000. Even if they needed 1000ct of dust, it would only be $8000. I guess they could have sourced expensive diamonds to crush, but they wouldn't have been diamonds that were already cut, polished, and graded (which is where much of the cost of the diamond comes from). I wouldn't be surprised if they really used $2000-$8000 in diamond dust with an exorbitant markup, which seems par for the course with the auto industry (especially the hyper-luxury segment).
@@Garriffic you forgot about the development cost to make the paint arent abrasive to your hand when touched, remember diamond arent grind-able without another diamond, plusss the hand painted stripe with squirrels hair is cost a lot too, since you basically purchasing an art, lol

Diamonds have a very high hardness which makes them difficult to cut. However, diamonds are also very brittle which means you can easily crush them into dust with just a basic steel hammer.
My dad used to paint custom vans for a living. They would get all kinds of different flakes and glitters to put in the paint to make them reflect and shine. When they got done with the job, they would throw what was left into a gallon paint can. A while back, we found the can and opened it up. It was a ranbow of liquid glitter! Delute it down, spray it on a car, and that thing would out shine a diamond.

The exposed carbon option costs so much primarily because they have to make sure that the panels have to absolutely perfect since it cant be hidden with paint. The other main factor is that the stripe patterns meet right at the centre to form a "V" pattern right along the centre of the whole car n the stripes technically continue in the exact same direction through the different panels. So they have to spend alot of time aligning n calculating the expansion before the raw product is put in the autoclave. Add the cost of ensuring the tint remains uniform throughout the length n width of the car n that equals to hundreds of man hours just on the exterior. Most of the cars tend to have the effects carried through to the interior as well n in cars like the Koenigsegg n Pagani these patterns match on minute things like strut braces, engine braces, engine cover, the spoilers, mirrors, n even on elements that will be visible only if you really were to take panels off the car. On the McLaren P1, the exposed carbon option was worth it because the cars with that spec usually command at least 5-600k USD over the "normal" painted cars.
A vintage car with a wild paint job that was very expensive would be the 1929 Ruxton Model A, it had a rainbow paint job with fish scales in it to make it effervescent.
as an automotive painter i wouldnt even try to do the bugati diamond effect that would be insanely hard to try to tape off and get the shapes just right
If I recall correctly the bare carbon price from the Jesko is also due to that they perfectly line up the carbon strands from panel to panel and it is completely symmetrical side to side.

In my opinion the Ford GT looks best in a dandelion yellow with dual black racing stripes... But the weird blue/purple color shifting paint looks good too!!
The diamonds are industrial quality. Same ones you get on a diamond saw blade. So not as costly as one would think. The cost in most of the paint is in the application especially with the diamond paint. Basically its the man hours involved along with the skill of the painter to be absolutely perfect.
Talking about paint colours. Imagine comparing a car with all extras (limited edition paint, etc.) vs taking the base model and modding it to a similar or better condition. - this is what got me into the car modding scene.
To be fair, with the Koenigsegg, on the naked carbon cars, every fiber is aligned perfectly, and matched perfectly in every place where they felt a seam was either necessary or complimentary. Seeing that Ford GT, it reminds me of the scene in The Grand tour where Clarkson hits the "Track" button and that car hits the sexiest squat and to hear Hammonds reaction - priceless or in this case, worth every penny. The moon dust owner probably got the moon dust of the set of the original landing.
The other reason why the naked carbon costs this much is the fact that while doing that the carbon threads have to be aligned perfectly in order to not ruin the flow of the lines, which have to continue through the whole car
The Porsche 918 came in Acid Green as well and that was SOOOOO much more expensive than the liquid silver. Also believe only 2 or 3 were ever sold with this option.
