Honourable mention for Isuzu. While the brand hasn’t gone entirely defunct as they are still producing commercial duty trucks for the US market, Isuzu has not sold a passenger vehicle in the US since 2008 with their last models being a rebadged Colorado and Trailblazer(I-290 & Ascender) through their partnership with GM.
Nickleback's Chad Kroeger used the brand in a song about wanting to be a rock star. Everybody _still_ didn't care, and everybody probably hated it _more_ because Nickleback.

It was totaled in an accident. and the LL0 was a legendarily reliable engine. not to mention they were dirt cheap even new. Saturn died long before they shuttered the company when they started badge engineering
Weren't the last years of Saturn mostly them just selling rebadged European Opels/Vauxhalls? Actually makes a lot of sense in a post-2008 environment (Ford did very well out of selling European-engineered Focuses and Fiestas in North America), but I guess GM's always going to GM.
Rover, anyone? The last brand of British Leyland standing (along with MG who sort of still exist) who were making cars in the UK for over 100 years before they stopped in 2005. They birthed Land Rover and Range Rover and were used by Prime Ministers and the Royal Family! Interestingly, the Rover name is now owned by Jaguar Land Rover but the brand is currently dormant.
Ruairidh MacVeigh just did a 4 part series on the death of the British car industry. Well worth a watch. Many years ago I had a Rover 213, it was the first car I ever bought. I got over 3 years of trouble-free driving out of it, except for a clutch replacement, before the rust meant it wouldn't pass a roadworthiness test. It was a sad day when I had to say goodbye to the old girl. The way BMW dealt with Rover was shameful.

It didn't occur to me that Scion would be in this and I wasn't ready for it. 😭😭😭 Rest in power to both versions of the XB and the TC.
I loved my tC. Such a great car. If it makes you feel better, a lot of the TC's looks and features made their way to the next gen Corollas.
I've seen a tC rip by me on the street at around 70, and that moment proved to me that tC's are amazing tuners, because I was walking, and we were on a street with two lanes and a curb in the middle.
Scion didn't die an ungrateful death. It did exactly what Toyota wanted. Tc's were popular with younger people, same for the frs. Then toyota graduated from Scion, and Gazoo has given us exactly what people have been asking for.
And the xB is just a square go kart lol
Scion was Toyota. Its like saying Ziggy Stardust and David Bowie are two different people. I recently got a rebuilt xB. Its like driving a compact shuttle bus, like a camery and a vw bus had a child but it is actually kinda fun. And they get good gas mileage and last 400k+.
Biggest regret of my life was my 06 xB that I totalled 😢😢
Probably common among scion owners lol
@@bournes9845 I still remembered that car to the GOAT of Gran Turismo, GRAN TURISMO 4. It also has Scion TC (Midnight Club 3 and NFS SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED).
I love the 1st gen Xb. It's a toaster. I seriously consider them every time I see a cheap one for sale, so practical
The Plymouth Prowler and PT Cruiser we’re totally missed opportunities to create cool halo cars.
9/11 joke in a donut video is INSANE LMAO
I remember that my local Opel Dealer had an Alero for sale. That car stood at the showroom for a really long time. Here in Spain it was "sold" as Chevrolet Alero but kept the Oldsmobile logos. The only one I've ever seen.
Creo haber visto uno en la calle, sin saber lo que era. Muy curioso
0:32 love how they admitted the problem for 0.5 milliseconds and then moved on. Cars should be a commodity, not a necessity
Moral of the story, GM invested too much and killed all the fun brands in the financial crisis 😂
Nothing changed either. Their investing in to the China ev game and billions on a HD truck facility 😂
Seeing that VERY quick Up To Speed reminded just how much I miss that show
"...because Penske could not find a way to actually build the cars." Blows my mind that Penske couldn't find a way to build the cars when they've been out there building cars and winning championships in IndyCar, Trans-Am, IMSA, and NASCAR
Thank you for crediting John Delorean, nobody gives him enough credit for sparking the muscle car era.
I just wanted to say, Justin was the perfect choice as new member back then and he's been rocking it.
It is sad to see those companies go,but their memories will never die!
As we die, so will the names. Such as Google this - List of defunct automobile manufacturers of the United States
You guys missed the most important GM brand of them all, Daewoo. It was shuttered post financial crisis as well. While not sold in the US later on as Daewoos, many Daewoo models were sold in the US under Chevrolet and Suzuki badging.
Pontiac was so sad when they went out due to bankruptcy my sister owns a G6 GT and there simple cars
You missed Rover, the UK brand that died in 2005 which also owned MG that was spun off and sold to the Chinese. Had a feeling this vid would be “Every car company THAT WAS SOLD IN THE US that was killed this century”!

Need some "Up to Speed" back in my life
Hey James I just wanted to say great job on these videos. Somehow you always make me laugh, and it’s usually with the smallest twist of a word or some kind of goofy pronunciation 😂 The videos are always well done and informative. Fun way to learn more about one of my favorite hobbies. To everyone at Donut keep up the good work. Great channel. High quality production.
I'm glad Saab is the first company mentioned in this video because that's the first company that came to mind, rip 😥
They named Plymouth first though...
Stupid bit is SAAB still exist, just not under their own brand name. The SAAB 9-3 is used as the base platform for another car.
Also should be noted that SAAB automotive haven't been part of the SAAB group since 2000, the core group is still alive and kicking making jets for the US Air force.
@@cgi2002 Do you know of any interviews/articles regarding this. I have had a fascination with saab as of late and would like to read about the main people behind the cars and where they went.
@@msk-g3783 unfortunately not and the information I could find on the automotive side was lacking. Plenty of info on their aircraft business however.
It's good to see Justin more often. He seems like a good fellow.
Pontiac Oldsmobile Mercury were probably the best ones out of all those
"Ask your doctor if Alero is right for you" is so cold lol🥶
Here to give my love to Pontiac and Oldsmobile because I truly love them. :(
Haha, I always thought the oldsmobile had possibly the worst name in cars. Old and Mobile. Why would anyone under 65 want one?
@@mattm7798 I'm in the under 65 demographic and I still want an Olds lol, in fact I have one now 😂
@@mattm7798 I'm 16 going on 17, and I was ALWAYS obsessed with the Alero coupe
@@mattm7798 to be fair the founder's last name was Olds.
No real mentions of Geo, Merkur, Daihatsu, Suzuki, AMC, Eagle, Sterling, Daewoo, Isuzu, etc?
James: JUST LIKE TESLA!
Justin: 👀
I had a 93' Bonneville, I loved that 3800 motor, best engine I've ever had under a hood(not fastest, just overall best I've had). Felt like riding on clouds, interior was comfy and plenty of room in the trunk, I forgot the average MPG but gas wasn't as expensive in 2004-2006 as it is now.
Bonnevilles were great cars
Rest in peace Scion. I still love my xB.
They still exist as a car brand in Australia, and they are very popular. They sell the Isuzu DMAX and the MUX, which are original cars, and are awesome.
Strange, they still sell sedans in asia
The hummer H2 and H3 use to look huge now they are around the same size as an average Japanese double cab Ute

Oldsmobile....
Oldsmobile with the second oldest car manufacturer on the planet when it was trashed.
It started before the early 1900s. It actually started in 1897....
It may seem trivial to you, not really carrying a whole lot.... But some of us actually like the history of cars and want the facts!!
My dream car was an 04-07 supercharged Grand Prix I ended up getting one in very good condition for less than $1000. Modding it has been very fun and surprisingly cheap to make power.
Why did i just get an actual ad for a nissan frontier done by nolan
I don't know if Donut knows what hotwives (1:50) are or if that was just an accident but... well played boys
I remember being an excited teenager about the PT cruiser when we seen the really cool concept car
Whoever edited this video is a hilarious human and should be protected at all costs.
Seeing the little cars changing position from James was really funny 😂😂
Back in my day, donut media used to upload daily
I love pontiac and Saab. But pontiac will always have a place in my heart
I love how Justin has really come into his own since joining Donut. He was a lil' awkward at first, but he's really found his groove!
Oldsmobile made a lot of great muscle cars. Also known for the first American fwd car in 1966 and first production turbo charged car
nobody likes fwd. not an achievement.
Oof big mad
@@Golds_442 how am I mad I’m just stating a point fwd is a cheap alternative to rwd
@@Anonymous-fo7bkFirst comment sounds like some teen angst opinion
@@Golds_442 just pointing how how much fwd sucks ass it is only used in cheap ass cars to save money. Just stating that Oldsmobile was the first one to implement shitty fwd.
Dude actually looks sober and not off a half week long coke binge. Glad hes getting healthier
Rip pontiac and holden :'( my absolute favorite cars. I wish they were around at least a few more years. Ex employees say pontiac had HUGE plans at the turn of the century. Then around 04 they were forced to cut down more and more, the budget just got tighter and tighter until there was nothing left.
GM was only supposed to have 2 brands afterwards, but they were able to have 4 in the end
i miss saturn. the saturns that were actually not just re-badged chevys. the S series. I had an old SL2 that had 353K miles on it, had survived a wreck, and all sorts of abuse. and as long as you kept oil in it, it would never die and in fact it never did. It was totaled in an accident. and the LL0 was a legendarily reliable engine. not to mention they were dirt cheap even new.
Saturn died long before they shuttered the company when they started badge engineering
Me too, and after GM took it over, they actually came out with the Ion in 03 first before the Chevy branded Cobalt in 04.
The S series really was a step up in the 90s. It's a shame that GM in fighting caught up to them and forced them to make like Olds and Pontiac.
yeah GM ruined these brands long before, the cars were basically badge copies
Weren't the last years of Saturn mostly them just selling rebadged European Opels/Vauxhalls? Actually makes a lot of sense in a post-2008 environment (Ford did very well out of selling European-engineered Focuses and Fiestas in North America), but I guess GM's always going to GM.
@rjfaber1991 and I was pretty surprised that they didn't mentioned that Sky is based on the platform that was developed from the Lotus originally
I miss Pontiac so much. They made pretty fun cars for a reasonable price.
Rip all these brands :( you will be missed
RIP Daewoo, you won't be missed
Im driving a chevy aveo or Daewoo right now. Its a POS
@@andrewsmith5198 Cruze was a Daewoo too
😂😂
I mean I have one and they don't break but they're basic AF
I heard the later ones were actually decent according to their owners.
Not like it helped lol.
The cobalt ss actually came after the Saturn ion redline, the redline also came with half doors which was cool
@@ConradNeill I'll have to look that up. My grandad worked for Rover until he retired in 1997 so I remember my family talking about BMW from the time.
Some powerful feelings when I saw that Up To Speed intro lol
Love the dynamic between you two, this one is hilarious!
the 2001 joke and the face zoom, deafening silence was too funny
Why were there soooo many culturally significant references in this episode lmfao wtf I love these two together 😂
great to see Justin finding his flow on the channel
A Mercury is the only car from any of these brands that ive ridden in and ive only seen maybe one or two others.
My aunt sold Saturns in the 90’s. She said it was a fantastic company to work for and the cars were very good value/quality.
Definitely a company that could have thrived if given the right direction and an owning company that gave a shit about them.
Same thing goes for Pontiac, I feel that they were cheated a little ngl
I will always have a spot in my heart for Olds and Pontiac.
Oldsmobile was responsible for so many innovations, also to include the first of the Tri-five and other famous body platforms that shaped America. The cutlass was the first A body, they had the TRUE first assembly line, the first HUD in a car, and even made some land speed records. The name and lack of unique styling definitely killed it hard
It's crazy how many companies GM has ruined and killed over the years.
