Doctors simply choose the absolute safest path because that way they can't get sued when something goes wrong. They just go "aha! you lifted more than 1 pound that time didn't you!"

Brian, great video! I’m a teacher in a tech center in ny, I showed your video with “Smiles “ this last week... I love the fact that you are sending a message, not just of fitness, but also of adversity in life! As an educator now, this is the most important thing that I try to convey to my students that life is and needs to be a struggle to literally mean anything... complaining will get you no where, and our videos have helped me express this... thanks to you, your family, and gym family for making it happen!

Brian I did the same thing with out even knowing it. I had a hernia over seas while on deployment and after surgery doc gave me quarters for 2 weeks and no lifting for 6 months after the first week i just knew I had to get moving I started with girl push ups and air squats really anything little that activated my core the slightest. I couldn't be caught in the gym so I used resistance bands in secret for the rest of the time. I was able to hop right back into my old lifts prior to injury after being 6 months off. I'm doing 100 lb, one minute planks without a worry in the world now. (Side I wanted to say thank you to you Brian and to Allen Thrall you both have inspired me to pursue what I love to do, lift heavy things lol I have my first strongman comp in August and I'm beyond excited for it. So thank you again and keep up the good content.

Brian I subscribed just because of this video. I already liked you and enjoyed watching your channel but this vid made me realize I needed to subscribe and support you.
I really appreciate and respect your attitude toward defying the odds, pushing passed barriers, limits, and the seemingly impossible. You dont merely motivate me, you inspire me. I've been through a lot in my life, more than I could ever explain on a YT comment.
And your attitude and explanation of why and how you recovered, reminded me of the examples my father demonstrated. This world is full of victim mentality, self-pitying weak people, who dont want to lift others up, but drag them down.
I admire your strength and fortitude to not give up or give in, but wisely recover.
Also I wanted to say from one man to another, dont worry about the subs or gym members who left.
Truth be told if they're fair weather friends or followers, they aren't loyal.
The loyalty they showed was merely in fact loyalty to themselves. Whatever you offered or did for them, they were loyal to what they could get from you.
When they'd no longer receive from you, toward their selfish goals, they left.
I'd be thankful the false friends of fair weather folks went away, only genuine people belong around you.
Keep your head up and stop being soo hard on yourself. I know you have deadlines and goals, but its life, it isnt a race. So you may or may not make a certain meet or trophy? And? So your life will end, your work was in vain?
If you fully place your value in meets and trophies than possibly, but if you feel your life is greater than lifting certain numbers or attaining specific titles, than my brother be at peace within.

Fearless. Fearlessness. I'm sure if I google these words, results will be pictures of you, Brian. You are simply not afraid. For the Q&A, more on your fighting history would be nice and the "fighting related exercises" you still practice (that butt walk thing, TGU maybe? - a video on TGU alone would be great, actually!). And finally, abs/core strenght progression, because us mortals can't do perfect form dragon flags and those fast as hell wildshield wipers like you and it would be good to know how you reached this point. Lot's of questions! Thanks for another amazing video. Cheers!

Going into ANY health issue in good shape helps. I too have a pic-line, but for lymphoma. My doctor says I’m his best patient in terms of how well I’m reacting to the chemotherapy. I owe a lot of that to being in great shape going into this. My body was used to covering from micro damage from weightlifting. So now instead of building muscle, my body is repairing collateral damage caused by chemotherapy.
Looking forward to my comeback this fall/late summer

Bro your channel is awesome, I check in to get pumped up for my work and I'm not even doing anything strongman, yet. I do kettlebell lifting daily and am seriously thankful to you for your videos, the q's and movements have been xtreamly helpful, my question is have you tried tail chi for recovery from fatigue and injury, I can't tell you how much its helped me over the years and it's a martial art, don't let the majority fool you its great if you can find a good teacher and could mitigate and or prevent a lot of pain in your future when all the injuries of youth come to haunt old age. May you live long and prosper.

  • @Fortress333

Brian, do you have advice on improving social skills, for example in the gym?
I usually just do my training session focusing on what I have to do in a given time. Sometimes, I wonder if it's rude not to say much or anything at all to others, except a hi or hello or a nod. I train seriously. Some people in the gym are very social and hang around talking to each other. By and large, these people ignore me. I don't particularly want to talk to them for a lengthy time, but it might make gym time less awkward if I didn't feel like these people ignore me; it feels like some people ignore me. It's nagging me a little.
When I feel worried about for example some physical pain I experience, I am even more closed of.
I heard you say you can also be keeping to yourself, but in these videos you come across as social and easy-going. It is clear you take this gym business very seriously. When things are not going as you hoped they would, you are perhaps not easy to deal with? Perhaps you have improved your social skills dramatically?
Anyway, I try to remember your advice when opening doors. When I open a door to enter a place or leave it to enter another, I try to remember to be confident. I have a tendency to brood and be closed off, but I am always friendly when someone talks to me.

Question: is there a way to include Front Squats in a powerlifting style program? you're one of the few who do both front and back squats, and if I do em on my push press/OHP day it fries my back for deadlifts; can't do em after squats as I got back off work and SSB good mornings and single leg work; just looking for your 2 cents here. I realize I won't be able to go heavy on front squats but I just wanna know where I should throw em. thanks man!!

Kurram Javed i would just switch the regular ones with frontsquats...i replaced them like half year ago and i can say that my back squats and dls goes up just by doing more and heavier frontsquats...i keep my heavy and volume stuff with front squats and then do backsquats like burnout or supersquat set at the end...

Awesome video I literally laughed out loud with the white board drawing lol I just want to say since watching your videos I have made tons of progress in the gym. You've shattered all my glass ceilings and it really irritates me when I see people try to call you out for peds. I genuinely believe you're not taking them. And after seeing how much progress I made in just one year I know your progress is fully possible. Well now that I've ranted haha I have a question. Since coming back from the military I've struggled with anxiety and panic attacks and it has ruined many gym days for me. How can I get my mind right? It's taken away so much already and now the one thing I have left I really enjoy is a struggle. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Inspirational vid, input for QA: What's in your view the most important thing in terms of longevity in the sport of strongman/powerlifting? Secondly what's your take on RPE vs Percentage based programs?

The thing about doctors and they're often perplexing advice is that they have to accommodate for the lowest common denominator human being. Telling you to not lift more than 5 lb is just overflow from the significant number of people who can't be trusted to use common sense or follow more than the most basic of instructions. And considering the repercussions it's understandable that doctors fall on the conservative side when it comes to giving advice LOL.

Paul Tully you usually sign away that right upon admission unless they like... leave a scalpel in you or something really out there. Generally, they just don't want to see you get hurt or sick again and go with the most conservative standards.

Josh Johnston. I can see liability being a concern, thats probably why they always advise activity and exercise but are shy about suggesting heavy lifting. Tell a thousand patients that a good lifting routine makes a lot of things better and at least a few will hurt them selves, even if any suits brought get dismissed its still an expense and hassle.

I need to learn to stop drinking things when I watch your videos. This morning, I cracked up and almost spat coffee all over my desk at work, and watching this one, I almost choked on my protein shake

If you could do a mini video on that trampoline thing you drop your atlas stones onto that'd be awesome. I'm on my third layer of mats to protect my concrete floor now...

So true! I recovered so slowly from a minor shoulder injury, because I babyed it too long. It was getting better, when I finally started working out and doing pushups again. Needed this video years ago.
Btw: how is your throwing up thing doing brian?

Allen's Active Productions If I'm remembering this correctly, he had a baseball scholarship and took a disqualifying injury. I wanna say knee? Then he did other things.
