"You don't rise to the occasion. You drop to the level of your training." I've heard that a thousand times and having dealt with some real stress, it's the damn truth.
In combat sports it is almost unheard of to see someone compete at 100% There is always something that happens leading up to the event. Something got torn, broke, or jacked up in training or you get sick during the weight cut. That last one is a big one. Cutting weight lowers you immune systems response to viruses. Many time people either get sick a day or two before or after the match.
Tore my hamstring 2 years ago when bending over to do my shoelaces lol... Doc told me to chill out for 6 weeks. Next day, was in the gym doing legs again -- Lighter -- But legs nonetheless! Never had issues with it since! :D Keep up the awesome work and videos Brian! :)
Oh Brian! Man this was me today! I started getting a bad tear on a callus on the pinky of my right hand. Started bleeding the day before. So i had scheduled axle bent rows and axle holds for time. I thought i better not do them as the hand was gonna be sore and it might rip more. But then i felt bad about not getting anything done. So i did the rows and the axle holds for time and yeah the callus was sore but nothing bad happened. Then i did 100 burpees to finish and i'm 55! So the younger guys have no excuses for slacking! Great video.
Low to mid range stimulus for muscle injuries is very important. Do a _lot_ of low intensity (several houndred reps of boredom), and a moderate amount of mid intensity (50-100 reps or so). Another good way to increase blood flow is to have an alcoholic beverage. So I sit here, sipping a beer while wiggling my foot, watching some great content, while my achilles tendon gets all the blood I can get there so I can heal faster.
I couldn't agree more; back in 2015 I separated my SI joint during heavy dead lifts and everyone was telling me how I need to quit lifting, lifting is going to keep me from my goals, etc.. Their negativity was not what I needed, so I just put my head down, developed a program that incorporated better stretching for mobility and stricken-ed my form and re-asserted my confidence in my drive towards goals. Within a year I was back to my solid lifts, if l had listened to and done what everyone else said, I would have never been able to come back to the gym, which was and is my life style.
Chris Kinney I have degenerative arthritis of the spine. When my back and hips hurt, deads are therapy. Clears the aches right up and gets my nerves firing properly. Now I dunno about a separated SI, but I completely believe that mindful lifting with good form, while not healing me (nothing will heal me... my spine is dissolving) it keeps that shit at bay for another day.
Im 46 years old been following you for a while now. Just recently started adding your training to mine. Love giant sets! I know you said you not trying to make this motivational but you are without trying to and that's what makes you real. I was struggling to get out of bed and deadlift my back feels like Crap. Watched your video and ready to deadlift. Thanks
Strength has never been a forte of mine and I don't think I'll ever do strongman stuff but I knew there was a reason I subbed and that's because you are humble and badass. I never knew you threw up so much and never would have guessed because you keep pushing forward instead of letting it bring you down. Keep up the great work Brian, glad to see your channel grow.
Brian, I think that your ability to be inspirational is because of your ability to be disciplined. Inspirational doesn't suck if its foundation is rooted in something that you value and cherish!
He's not saying it's not necessary. He does mention diet and rest being important in quite a few videos. He's just saying there's always something you can do to improve the situation or rather that you don't have to completely shut everything down every time you have an injury. Though a back injury makes it harder to really do anything so there's not *always* a lot you can do. Best of luck with your rehab man, hope you've got a good PT.
I'm dealing with a lower back issue right now myself. I keep working through the pain and it hurts like hell. I guess i kinda have wishful thinking that if i keep working out that itll gradually somehow heal slowly while i workout still. I probably need to take 2 weeks off or something though.
Austin what has helped me the most with pain is backing off on volume. I know it sounds bad and I know you want to get those reps in, but even if I still lift heavy I just make sure to do less volume. If heavy hurts too, then just do light, but keep doing something. Also, look into the Stuart McGill method of healing back pain through certain core movements that help to keep stability in your back and protect your spine. Good luck brother, you got this.
Hurt my back to the point of not being able to move a few months ago. Read up on nocebo and the brains tendency to be overprotective of you and decided to start deadlifting again in 4 days. Set a PR the next week.
I feel like such a fan boy when I watch your videos because I always leave feeling more motivated and ready to attack my goals, but it's really just that you're so good at nailing issues on the head. "Die Empty" is something I tell myself before those difficult sets, and videos like this show that's not something you just put on t-shirts and sell, it's something you live by. Thanks for all the amazing content Brian, you're the man!
I know you said you don't like motivation, and I agree, discipline is important and motivation is fleeting. I just wanted to say that what you're going through and saying struck a chord with me. I think I found your channel at the right time, because I've been going through some shit lately and a lot of what you said has kind of resulted in a mindset shift. I look forward to watching more of your videos!
I'm very new to your channel and this video means so much to me right now. I've been very depressed over the last 6 month, im 27 and have had 2 back surgeries about 2 years ago had to have it fused and I had a factory job and hurt every day when a change happened I took the chance to stay home with my 2 kids and try to fix my back by staying off a concrete floor 12 hours a day and when I left work I was 260 some weight to loss now I'm 320 and I felt like I was done for but I found your videos and I've been trying to find a way to get back into it and lose the weight so some day I can be proud of myself again and this video just feels like your talking right at me and I wanna thank you for that
Everything you said is so true. I’m ashamed to admit this, but I had a severe injury about 4 years ago and I completely gave up, got depressed, stopped eating, stopped lifting (listened to doctors who said I couldn’t), got down to 85# (i’m 5’1). One day, about 15 months later, a physical therapist basically told me to get over myself, get a bar back on my back and start squatting again. Best advice I ever got. Now, I get tweaks or little injuries and just keep going, maybe modify some if needed but keep training. I love your channel. You’re my favorite and I wish you the best!
I had knee pain for like 6-7 months without realizing that I was extremely close to snapping my patellar tendon. The doctor told me to do nothing for two weeks and me being into martial arts and lifting so deeply thought that it would be impossible. For those two weeks I listened to them and the pain only got worse. After the two weeks I pretended that I was feeling completely fine so I could work out again. The first workout was a living hell. By the second one my pain was completely gone and hasn’t flared up in a long time. So the advice of stay moving and push through the pain is perfect for cases like this, thank you Brian.
I learned so much during my shoulder injury 8 months ago. I now am able to take that sort of body health very seriously to avoid injury because of it. You help keep me in that mind set of just getting things done no matter what happens to stay moving forward. Keep doing what you do!
Brian thank you for saying motivation is stupid. Motivation is temporary, discipline and work ethic gets results. I shared your RISE video with a lot of people and it’s .. inspirational. I use that word because it’s a reminder that this life will bully you and kick you around and take what it wants from you but it’s up to us to go take it back every day. If there’s one thing I’ve leaned from your channel (non lifting related) it’s that right there. How to suffer beautifully! Thanks Brian, you’re really an awesome dude!
I tweaked my back/hip in February 2016 during a warmup squat. I stopped, "rested" a lot (read as "sit") and it took me down for four months, including missed days of work. I started working around it and it eventually got better. I had the same pop/grind during a warmup squat on Tuesday. I started to leave the gym, then though "no way, man" and did a bunch of secondary work and stretched/worked around it until I could do some partial air squats, then did some romanian deadlifts. Work up on Wednesday, with minor discomfort, work up Thrusday, no pain at all. You and several people I have read/watched helped this not drop me again due to bad "census" thought on injuries.
While this is not a long term solution, if injuries come up due to lack of nutrients (because of vomiting)... have you considered maybe going on IV therapy? Just a short term solution sort of idea here, throwing it out. Hoping you stay positive sir, it's been great to see your updates (and the advice you did recently on squatting helped me immensely recently as I have been trying to get my low bar positioning down)
When I broke my foot in football, I walked around on it for a few days and practiced on it before I knew, and after I found out, I still stayed active, and went to the gym, and when it was healed, I stayed in pretty good health. The following year I snapped my ankle, and I finished the game I snapped it in, but after that I stopped almost all physical activity. I felt so much worse after the second injury, not because I injured worse, it was because I was less active and weaker. I completely agree with the message of this video, rock on brother.
Thanks for sharing... Coincidentally needed to be reminded of the passion. Just heading back to the gym after 1.5 years and can't seem to find my rhythm. Pulling my back at what I considered baby weights and getting tired at a fraction of what I was capable of.... So made the muscle pull in my back an excuse to not go back the last ten days! But tomorrow I will be back... Thanks once again... You continue to be really cool and get well soon👍
I wish I had heard this advice many years ago. I would work out for a few months, hurt myself and quit for a couple years over and over. Or give up when I failed. Last year I hurt my shoulder but instead of quitting I got help and PT until it got better. Ive had two more injuries since but keep on going. Thanks Brian for putting into words one of the hardest lessons I had to learn.
I had a herniated disc some time in spring this year and almost everyone around was telling stuff liike "you should't lift anymore" and "don't wreck yourself with stupid stuff liike that". Unfortunately I believed that for some time and since then it has been super challenging to get to where I was before especially on the squat. Now im on 11th week of your darkhorse program, feeling strong and pretty confident about test week! Huge thanks for everything, you sir, consider yourself my personal idol 👍👍👍
Can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. Definitely reinforces my dedication to train every day and the why of doing it, to make myself better every day.
Needed this video, not for an injury but my current life circumstances.. been half-assing things and feeding negative thoughts.. wouldn’t say this motivated me, was just good to hear thoughts i had been thinking coming from someone else’s mouth (even though they’re completely unrelated haha).. thank you for your vids, they really are pure quality 💪🏿
This video.. I needed this video.. I've been busting my ass in the gym (and I'm just a joe nobody) but I'm waiting on elbow surgery and I'm feeling banged up and fighting through it mentally and physically. It's like a 8-10 month wait for surgery and I've been focusing on the other parts of my body and just recently I've been working on pulling and light pushing again. Waiting but not waiting for surgery. I feel like the mental game is harder than the physical game through this whole thing.
Another great video! Brain Alsruhe, you are one of the toughest guys I've ever seen! What you go through and continue to push yourself like you do, that's amazing mental toughness!
Brian your the man! Really enjoy all your videos. Here's a quote from Jim Rohn I thought you would enjoy! "Don't Wish it was Easier. Wish you were Better!" I will be buying a program from you soon!
Hey man just wanted to say thanks. I’ve been training for basic training for 6 months. 1 week ago I developed ITBS. I leave for basic training tom. I’ve created a stretching regiment to help me dealt with the pain while I’m in basic. I needed this advice.
I love your videos and I hope your hamstring heals fully. It is probably not completely torn if you can do GHRs, not that I'm a doctor or anything. So have fun at Brian Shaw's house but please don't do what you did with your rotator cuff and tear it off completely. If you "don't rise to the occasion but drop to the level of your training" then maybe your body won't rise to the healing but drop to the level of its nutrition. I am hoping you recover fully.
Pulled a 20lb PR on deadlifts the other day. Clenched my teeth too hard and was in the dentist 3 days later worrying if I broke my tooth as I was popping Ibuprofen to fight through the pain. Did I not do squats the day after I thought I broke a tooth? Fack no, just made damn sure I didn't clench my teeth. Any sort of head pressure from breathing and bracing was rough too. Just kept thinking back to watching you still lifting weights pre and post surgery. Wearing your clothing so I damn well better rep and follow the NEVERsate mentality. Thanks a ton for these video's and the gear. P.S. Tooth fine, dental crown had to be refitted but we clear. Deadlifts party tomorrow!
You're absolutely right about taking stuff one step at a time. There will be times I wake up in the morning and my legs will be super sore from last workout, and I think I'm gonna be as week as a kitten. But by the time I warm up, I feel just like normal. If you have pain, you gotta move before you make a decision on what to do.
3mo challenge has been kicking my butt so far on top of my regular training, but it feels good to be putting in the work. Weight vest arrives on Monday, looking forward to having something that fits a bit better than a bunch of weights crammed into a backpack
im in pain rite now pulled a back muscle. not sitting down, getting appropriate rest though, using bands lol 50% squats, and lightened up my other exercises... I know its not a pep talk, but helped me evaluate my mental attitude and feed the rite dog
holy shit! It's 10;30 at night. i'm going to run through a brick wall now because of the energy I just gained from this video. Hope you quit puking soon Brian.
Thank you for this, I had a major finger injury and had 2 surgeries to repair tendons, I was told I couldnt do anything because of the injury and a picc line I had for 3 weeks, I have done the OT like a champ but can't break the scar tissue and may need another surgery.....with that said I was released for light duty at the gym....but I have lost my gym. Identity and don't know what to do anymore ......this his very helpful and I am going to figure it out!
I tweaked my back recently on a Friday to where I couldn't get out of bed the next day, I was back to normal by the next Friday. Instead of sitting on the couch for a week, I pushed myself to use my back, even though it hurt, each day. I've learned just sitting on an injury makes it take much longer to heal.
Great video as always. I had several back injuries in the last year and my initial response was to just quit deadlifting. Luckily your bud Alan Thrall had a video specifically about that and said the same as you, get in there and do something to get blood to the area. Deadlift has gone up by 40 lbs this year! I still can barely do conventional without my back burning but I can do singles and I can use the trap bar with no issue
Definitely, agree I overstretched my right side of my back while sleeping and in the morning it started spasming really bad, but I decided to take the week off and now I still trying to find my lifting rhythm. Unfortunately, it has been few months and still not able to find my rhythm again, but this time once I find it I will not be letting go.
I did a 1000km hike some years ago, and managed to pull a muscle in my inner thigh on the first day. Still made it all the way, but taking it one step at a time! And exactly like you said, there were days I woke up and couldn't get my feet flat on the ground and thought I wasn't going to be able to continue, but as soon as you get the blood flowing it's a whole other story.
I have torn ACL and meniscus and.l Iam already not walking for two weeks. Surgery tomorrow and my my doctor says that I should not powerlift anymore after that but I dont want to listen to that crap, I was still training my upper body since the injury. Thanks for this video, needed to heard that.
keep speaking the, thank you we all need that swift kick in the ass to remind us what TRUE Strength is really about. if pain is weakness leaving the body, Then it's time to bring on the hurt 😎 to the strongest man on UA-cam stay strong brian I promise I will sincerely Gary K.
I got a high ankle sprain, which is a really bad injury that usually only happens to NFL players. I took inspiration from Russel Wilson who had the same injury, he was up and around walking on it that same night, he never missed a game. I was walking on it, stretching it, icing it, every day. It still took like 3 weeks to be able to walk normally and even then it was still painfull, but I had zero atrophy because I was loading it and working it the entire time. It still felt kind of funny for 6 months but it got as strong as ever and I can hike and rock climb again, it's back at 100% now. I think it was a better approach than staying off of it and letting it atrophy.
Great message Brian, I was wondering if Kona' s ears were picking up every time you mentioned feeding a dog :)So true about working through an injury, last time I tweaked my back I had recently watched an Alan Thrall video where he talked about getting back to moving and lifting as soon as possible, I put this advice to work, and the back pain cleared in about 2 days.
"Because I said I would...." Could you please put that on one of your T-shirts????
Yo Brian, it's unanimous! T-shirts!!!!!
Good shout. I'd buy one.
Agreed!
Great video 👍
"You don't rise to the occasion. You drop to the level of your training."
I've heard that a thousand times and having dealt with some real stress, it's the damn truth.
0:22 "cos I said I would". That's why this guy's the prime alpha of UA-cam fitness 💪

Exactly
The first dog tells you to take the down time and stop pushing. The other dog is Kona!
Hope you can catch a break sometime soon. Also who the hell is leaving negative comments, I wish I had a Brian in my life. Be kind and push yourself.
Title this as "My word is My Bond" total motivation Brian. These are crazy strong words.
Tore my hamstring 2 years ago when bending over to do my shoelaces lol...

Joaquin C yeah man. I'm never gonna be competition strong, but I can sure as hell be stronger than I am. And if I keep at it, well who knows?
That’s a true statement.. I had 3 heart surgeries and my doctor told me to get active start pumping blood . An never looked back ..
Thanks! This was exactly what I needed!!!! You're the man!
Thanks Brian needed that one...

Waiting but not waiting for surgery. I feel like the mental game is harder than the physical game through this whole thing.
This video is amazing. Thanks Brian. It was good to hear even the physical reasons, as well as the mental reasons.
Little pain(s), big lesson(s)....
Thank you, big man!
awesome video Brian and 100% absolute truth!
One of the best videos I've seen.
Hell man. I think you're motivating as hell. Of course this comes from a Marine's perspective.
We all just got a million bucks worth of wisdom for free. Recognize it. Respect it. Appreciate it!
Hey man just wanted to say thanks. I’ve been training for basic training for 6 months. 1 week ago I developed ITBS. I leave for basic training tom. I’ve created a stretching regiment to help me dealt with the pain while I’m in basic. I needed this advice.
You're like that black knight in Monty Python. You keep coming back no matter what. You challenge life to a duel each day. Respect.
White Wolf Mere flesh wound.
Dang Brian you are an inspiration, I hope you figure out what is wrong with the throw up I know it's been a problem for a while
Dr. Laura Ruby is a Doctor right in westminter that specializes in unexplained illnesses. might be worth a try.
You may not wanted to make a motivational video but you did and I thank you for it
I love your videos and I hope your hamstring heals fully.
The absolute greatest there ever was and is.
Thanks Brian!
I had recently had a pec strain and it was really discouraging!
Thank you very much!
In my daily life most people are not talking about such a mindset and they are far away from acting that way. And thats sad.
could you make a vid about your experience working in counter terrorism? Sounds super interesting! You're the man brian!
This is super inspirational, thank you!
Thanks for the video brother👊🏻 God bless!
So much love to you Brian , This video really hit home with me, thank you brother
Lots of wisdom in this one people.
Amazing video so glad I subscribed keep up the great work!
Thank you Brian
I usually take about 5-12hours to assess the situation. Then I keep on keepin on.
It's a MINDSET!!!
Needed to watch. Great vid.
You are truly unique..........regards from litle denmark.
Mind yourself Brian your a madman ✊
Thanks for this video, needed to heard that.
keep speaking the, thank you we all need that swift kick in the ass to remind us what TRUE Strength is really about. if pain is weakness leaving the body, Then it's time to bring on the hurt 😎
to the strongest man on UA-cam
stay strong brian
I promise I will
sincerely
Gary K.
lol truly I suck at typing
Absolute mad man, I fucking love it
Awesome message Brian 👌
So, what you are saying is... IT IS A MINDSET!!!
Man I hope you get better man
Love the vid Brian!
I really enjoyed this video thanks
Great message Brian, I was wondering if Kona' s ears were picking up every time you mentioned feeding a dog :)So true about working through an injury, last time I tweaked my back I had recently watched an Alan Thrall video where he talked about getting back to moving and lifting as soon as possible, I put this advice to work, and the back pain cleared in about 2 days.
you remind me of HUGH GLASS from the revenant...much love bro.
