My gym only has 100 lb dumbbells and I feel like I have been using the 75-80's forever, and never realized I was probably not moving up because of the mental block of 100 lb DB being the biggest one's in the gym. Went to the gym today grabbed the 100's and I was able to crank out 3 sets of 10, who knows how long I would have been training at below my potential if it wasn't for this video. Also, using the tips from your overhead press videos I improved my strict press by 30 pounds today. Thanks for the great content and helping me set some new PR's today.

I am the smallest and weakest in the free weight area of my commercial gym but I am much stronger than I was 4 months ago. I am trying to be an inspiration for the other chubby middle-aged ladies that lifting heavier weight is possible. My goal is for a 200 pound deadlift and squat within 3 months and triple digits with bench and OHP in 6 months.

just lived it the last couple years, I was so ecstatic to hit 335x3, 400 seemed impossible and thinking about 500 was just out of the stratisphere for me, because 'I wasn't going to take drugs so I could never get that strong'
but then I made it to 405, then 405x5, then 455, then 405x10, 465, 475, 495, 475x3, 500x3! and now I'm sitting here looking back, routinely loading 475 and higher on the bar, my unrealistic lifetime goal already struck, trying to think if it might be possible to push for 600 naturally.. this video is just what I needed right now to reestablish my expectations for myself after making it this far, to keep me going when the temptation is to say, "good enough, well done chap, now rest on your laurels.."

5:21 Yeap, yeap, yeap. Your own belief system must be your number 1 fan. If you don't have that fire in your brain that makes you think you are almighty - you won't go past average.
You can have friends, family, team cheering for you - great, whatever. That's what individual sports often teach you - in the most important moments you are actually alone. Being it life or sport or any other crucial endeavor for you. Your "performance" in THAT moment will depend on you and the voice in your head that you nurtured.
    Thank you for sharing, Brian!

Be careful with not accepting excuses for yourself. I made some real bad experiences with trying to ignore my excuses (basically CNS literally not being able to handle a lot of workload). It can end badly.
But for the vast majority your mindset and mentality should be helpful.

This struck a real chord with me. I had to change my mindset to get my Ph.D. thesis done. I was feeling sorry for myself because I was working full time and helping out my family. I was envious of my colleagues who seemed to have more time, money to support themselves and opportunities than me. My thoughts were, "I could finish; or write more papers etc; if I didn't have this or that blah.." But eventually I had to say "find a way to get it done anyway". And in October last year I submitted it. It took me much longer than my colleagues, but I found a way to get it done. It was my mind that was holding me back not the reasons I was contemplating. There are lots of other people I know that would let the other mindset make it okay for them to quit. Thanks Brian. sorry for the long post.

Not being average comes from the inside. It comes from never accepting the "good", but only looking for the better, even if it doesn't exist for you at this given time.
I'm not pretentious enough to apply this statement to myself, but one day, I'll get there. And I sincerly hope most of humanity does too.

Loved the video. May have been one of the most motivating ones I've seen. This is different from these 'motivation videos' because they only provide short term motivation and get you pumped. This one really inspired me. I'm 19 and when I started training for strength 3 months ago my dad told me I shouldn't because my body is not built for this kind of sport. I didn't take this as demotivating, rather I put my all into proving him wrong. I was always a pretty skinny guy and I started out at a 60kg squat max. Yesterday I squatted 85kg for 5x5. I know thats not much, but I've still got a long way ahead of me and also it's important to set small goals for yourself. If you set your goal to a huge weight straight ahead you will only see how far you are from achieving it and it will seem impossible. If you set multiple small goals along the way, you will stay motivated because reaching them feels so damn good. I wanted to squat 100kg within my first year and I know that I will achieve that. This video was kind of reassuring for me that I'm doing the right thing. Thank you Brian, I'm really grateful for your videos and I hope you have some nice holidays. Cheers! :)

that anicdote about the dumbells was the truest thing I have ever heard. in my gym the dunbells only go to 100 and noone touches them so I picked one up yesterday and started doing goblet squats after watching this vid. Goblet squats are easy as fuck for anyone keeping score. and the people around you start acting like holy shit is he really doing that. and after hearing what you had to say about this idea it all seemed so silly like guys this shit isn't even enough we aren't there yet and honestly it made me a little sad. but a valuable lessen you got to leave your ego behind in strength training and in life because someone will always be ahead of you. great message Brian Alsruhe

"Impossible has changed" is a nice theme for T-shirts as suggested, could be variations - move the impossible, change the.., disrespect the.., the impossible, etc. Maybe you're the guy that took the impossible and made a .. good T-shirt business out of it, good strong word, like the HVIII brand.

Also, you're completely right about strength depending on who you surround yourself with. I previously went to LA Fitness where the strongest squat was 405. I moved to a powerlifting gym called "Orlando Barbell" where the heaviest squat is 1003 pounds, Jo Jordan is his name I think. I now squat 405 in half the time it took me to get to 225 :)

Who wants to be great in their own world when there is a bigger one to seize? I like that you want to be the best in the world, no excuses. You clearly are a smart person who is capable of being realisically objective...I don't know what your objectives are, but I'd bet most that you'll achieve them.

    great video man!
i think i can call myself an advanced lifter in terms of the Deadlift. I've learnt my craft very very well and now all I need to do is keep up the consistency and things will move smoothly! intermediate for the bench and squat.
and you are so right about comparing. i used to always say to myself things like "if Eddie hall can Deadlift 500kg, then I'm 100% sure i can lift my baby weight" i used to purposely make my weights look small, so i didn't have a reason to fear them.
everything is possible once you do it in your head!
i hate hearing excuses, i mentally distance myself from those kind of people, and brainwash myself with the mentalities of the greatest and strongest lifters on this planet. make them your "friends".
    nice one, friend :)

Same thing happened to me one year ago. I was letting myself go, making excuses, if this, if that, and I said enough is enough. Went from deadlift 315x2 (hurting my back lol) to deadlifting 405x6 in one year. I'm extremely happy with my results so far because I took actions and changed what I believe is possible. A goal I've had for a long time is to deadlift 500 pounds and I believe I am getting really close now. Wanted to before 2017 but that's okay, because 2017 I'm gonna be making GAINZ like crazy. I could deadlift 500 pounds if... you gave me two more years. Seriously, my progression seems like it's gonna get me there, ten pounds a month. Every month, I think, "jeez... I've never lifted these numbers before." And then I hit three more reps than I had to.

Seriously though. I started lifting a little over 2 years ago. I was deadlifting 65 pounds with the barbell stacked on plates so I wasn't doing deficits. I've better than quadrupled that in that time, and I wasn't even on a progression plan!

As a busy 39 year old who started lifting three years ago and had to back off for six months twice, I am the epitome of the guy who could make excuses all day. But your great attitude helps me stay focused and motivated to improve. Maybe slightly ironically, it also helps people like me who are still far from being strong even relative to their commercial gym dare walk into the squat rack and not give a damn about the fact a guy half my weight just moved double the weight I'm putting on my back. It's ok to be learning/progressing because we're all somebody's definition of weak. And that's not even talking about the fact that your tips are the ones that made me progress most on OHP and Squats. They are still incredibly low - I'm still arguably a beginner :-D But any progress has come thanks to your tips more than anyone else's (and I do the rounds of all the best guys on UA-cam). Thanks Brian, you really help the community and guys like me.

(Trying to work up to competition:Strongman, not really finding anything in my area of Washington.) anyways... revisiting old videos, getting motivated, just thought you should know.
I’m glad you’re getting better, and that you’ve got such a killer crew with you.

Awesome video as always man! 2 years ago when I started powerlifting I was shocked how weak I was, most of the people I trained with, were 10 times stronger than me. I started hitting the gym all the time, eating the right food and I never skipped it. Now I am one of the strongest guys in my gym, but still I am an average lifter!

Taking ownership is definitely hard for most but it's great that you share and inspire people to do the impossible as possible. Just recently found this channel from Alan Thrall's channel (whom i also recently found) and I'm greatly appreciating and learning totally new perspectives of training from you. Thanks, Brian!

I saw the Q&A where you talked about intrinsic motivation and I’m watching this video thinking that this is just outside motivation that won’t last but it isn’t. I see that you’re trying to change minds unlock that drive in your viewers, or rather to present them with a choice to release and apply that drive, and as I’m writing this all you’re words are starting to make sense.

Aw man! Great video. I gotta say I am pumped for 2017 and lifts. It is awkward that I am coming down with a cold today. Hey, it works out for the best after all, because this week starting today is just "ramp up" week after the holidays (fitness hell....) and then it s ON, 5th gear, with your giant sets programme.

Right on time . Just got back from the gym where some nobody tryed to convince me that all my accesorie work to improve my deadlift and reach 440 lbs is useless "Cos you don't need 440 lbs deadlift to build muscle and be strong , You can be strong with a lighter deadlift" ... Spoiler alert : I'm the only one in my gym who bother deadlifting anything over 300 lbs (I know it's nothing but that's how "average" my gym is )

Real talk brother, good job and it's something for people to think about.
I remember when I started training and was skinny tall guy( 6'6) other people would say that I won't be able to put mass, that squatting big numbers is impossible with my height as well as pressing 'cos of my long arms and so on plus those same ppl were on drugs. And now I'm squatting around 500lbs and deadlift over 500 and doing rack pulls from various height I go from 600+ lbs all the way to 900lbs. And funny thing is that those same people who are also enhanced say that I can do that bcos I'm tall and have ~265lbs and call me out for taking PEDs 😅 haha weak minded ppl with lot of excuses. 😅

Brian Alsruhe Thanks brother. I'm looking at old school strongmen back before steroids and it motivates me to know what human body can achieve naturally so I always shoot for higher goals and if I don't achieve them I'll still be on respectable level because of the mindset and all this journey.
Right now some virus caught me and I can't wait to be back on the track.
Keep working hard and doing great work. 💪

The safety net complex is a direct result of social currents emphasizing self esteem, I was a result of this culture for too long. Remembering the perennial truth that self esteem is a by-product of doing esteemable things and not a result of having smoke blown up your ass, would do this nation well. I like you Brian, I know you will succeed. Men of integrity are less common these days than they should be. Growing a following while regularly addressing the viewers to cull the chaff from the wheat is important in maintaining quality patronage. Excellent rant.
