      depends on who makes the +p's. not all +p's are created equal. I had some +p+ hydra shocks that bulged/smiley the casing base but got no real velocity diference from the hst vs hst +p's. and then came Georgia arms with a 1200 fps with a 124 grain fmj out of my 5 inch taurus 92. ballistics by the inch is really good for numbers comparisons

      Hey man, on a serious note though, the velocity and shape retention of Copper 22 fired from a 20+" rifle might actually have a chance of occasional penetration. I think I have an old 3A groin protector that I might have to test that on.

      I'm guessing you'll be losing velocity with .22LR out of a 20"+ barrel over a 16", which may itself be slower than an even shorter barrel. Every loading has an ideal barrel length for max velocity, and .22LR aint 20"+!

      @slimjim7411 6 років тому +49

      At 500ft/lbs of energy delivered within 12" of penetration begins to have a negative impact on brain function. At 600ft/lbs of energy it can knock a person out and do very bad things to their brain. This is why it actually hurts more to get shot in a soft vest than without. So getting hit in the chest with a .45acp +p wearing soft body armor will absolutely make you take a nap.
      Hence why the duct tape kept blowing off. Also why although it will stop a 12 gauge slug you will go to the hospital for internal injuries, and a brain scan. Because above 600ft/lbs of energy delivered in 12" or less it actually begins damaging brain tissue and blood vessels.

    Several years back I had the unfortunate experience of witnessing a fellow Officer get shot (while wearing 3A Body Armor) during a entry team exercise. Without going into too much detail he was playing the role of a "bad guy" and as the Team made entry he was shot at a distance of about 10 feet. His vest stopped a .45 230 grain JHP fired from a 1911 style pistol. The result (after the Oh-Shit Factor) was a nice bruise on his chest and moderate complaint of pain for a short time. The vest did it's job even though the "Safety Officer" did not do his. Many lessons were learned and extra precautions were added to the safety procedures.

      I didn't want to create a panic but I think it's best if everybody knows about this. You see, the Japanese have PROVEN conclusively, with highly repeatable scientific results, as has been shown in numerous movies (sadly neglected by the Academy Awards and Nobel Prize committees), that radiation induced genetic mutations can create size abnormalities in several species. Mega-Godzilla is the perfect example of that. And due to the Fukushima radiation release there are fears that a body armor shattering Mega-Unicorn will emerge.

    Magnum revolver cartridges (e.g., .357, .41, .44) benefit a lot more from carbine barrel lengths than the automatic service pistol cartridges do (e.g., 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP), because they have much higher case capacity and use slower burning powder. A .357 Magnum loaded hot can nearly match the energy of a 7.62×39mm (AK-47 cartridge) when fired from a carbine:
    Buffalo Bore .357 Magnum 125gr. JHP fired from an 18.5-inch barrel Marlin 1894 = 2,298 FPS
    www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=100
    7.62×39mm is usually about 100 FPS faster with the same bullet weight from a typical 16.3" barrel AK-47.
    By the way, the 9mm from the carbine shouldn't have made it through IIIA body armor, which suggests your body armor was compromised or otherwise defective. From the carbine it was a 115 grain bullet at 1,258 FPS, which is about what you'd get from 115 grain +P ammo from a typical handgun, and less than you'd get from a typical handgun firing .38 Super, .357 SIG, or .357 Magnum, and IIIA body armor is rated to stop all of those. Even the lower grade type IIA body armor is rated against...
    124 gr. 9×19mm Parabellum FMJ bullets at a velocity of 1225 ft/s ± 30 ft/s
    ... and a 124 grain FMJ 9mm bullet at up to 1,255 FPS has significantly more penetration than a 115 grain FMJ 9mm bullet at 1,258 FPS.
    Type II is rated against 9mm +P and .357 Magnum, and type II is still a lower grade than IIIA. Type IIIA is rated against .357 SIG, .44 Magnum, and 10mm Auto, as well as Russian 7H21 9mm, which is specifically designed to defeat body armor:
    "The 7N21 (Cyrillic: 7Н21) 9×19mm overpressure variant features an armour-piercing bullet and generates a peak pressure of 280 MPa (41,000 psi)."

    Love your vid's ! Yes I remember that Herculoid thing ! Lol
    My one gripe ( had to be one , right ! ) is the term Spear point bullet . Some folks may take that to mean a bullet manufactured by the Speer bullet Co. The term mostly used for the "pointy" type bullets is a Spitzer . So named because a German developed it and the German military adopted it in the early 1900' s . It actually affected the U.S. Militaries plans . I'm sure you are aware that the 30-03 was the first cartridge to be designed for use in the '03 Springfield. It used the standard long roundnosed bullets ( 220 gr ) that all Militaries used at that time . Thus when the Germans brought out the Spitzer bullet for the 8×57 Mauser round , with its superior ballistics , the world raced to catch up ! Thus was born the 30-06 with its Standard 150 gr Spitzer bullets ! Lol .
    Sorry for the novel , but just thought I'd try to throw in a little bit of my vastly miniscule knowledge on the term Spitzer ! Lol

Given the same bullet diameter, it is a question that both should perform identically against the 3A (either both pen, or both stopped).

    @troy9477 7 років тому

    I was a bit surprised that the 9mm from the carbine penetrated. The 3-A is rated for 9mm +p at 1300 fps i believe. Very interesting. No surprise on the 45- it is fatter and slower. Logic suggests that any expanding bullet has a lower chance of penetrating than a similar non-expanding bullet. The old urban legend was that a 22 WMR would go through first generation vests (about level 2-a back then) because the weave of the material was not as tight and the small bullet could essentially slip through. A lot of bad guys made it a point to get .22WMR snubbies, mini revolvers or derringers. Don't know if any cops were injured by them or not. Thanks for dispelling some myths. Excellent presentation as always

If I only had $200ish and had to have a pistol a Hi-point would be my choice unless I found a good deal on something used. Their carbines are also very solid and would be a good home defense weapon for someone who was on a budget and can't handle a shotgun.

      Now Chris... Hi point pistols are definitely for the budget minded, who won't fire it much. (I only know one person with the carbine, and he likes it. But, he hasn't put lots of rounds through it, so longevity?) I personally have purchased these pistols to test them. Each one (of the 5 my group tried) had catastrophic failures around the 2200-2500 round mark. If you are looking for a home defense pistol on the cheap, that you will dry fire practice with mostly, I say why not. (I also think adding 50 or 60 bucks and getting an SCCY CPX 2, or other pistol in that price range, is a better option. 2 cents, ymmv)

I have over 1500 rounds through the carbine with no issues, except when using ProMag hi cap mags, which has a slightly different follower and causes "nose diving". I can't imagine anyone staying in the fight even if the round doesn't penetrate. That shit looked painful. I bet the concussion alone would fuck up an organ or two.

      Jay Zenitram Would be painful for sure. But there are many instances of people (some by training & some high on drugs) staying in the fight even without body armor. Some of those without body armor and taking several hits have fought long enough to do lethal damage.

    Excellent Paul. Good job. As always your delivery of the subject matter is most entertaining and spot on.
