Hey everyone: It has come to my attention (yes, very late) that people are concerned that I didn't use the mega death, super powerful, galactic assassin 10MM ammo. I was trying to be fair. So I used the same brand and, to the extent I could, similar bullet weights. If I had used Buffalo Bore 10MM I would have had to use Buffalo bore .45 This comparison reflects the types of ammo that are typically at local stores.
Megadeth, Super Powerful Galactic Assassin!! Sounds like the double header on an upcoming Monsters of Rock festival. Lol Thanks for the videos. I appreciate every one of them.
Thanks for reaffirming my decision to have my 45 ACP with me when I go camping in black bear country in Mi. soon. A couple of years ago I had a bear toss my camp and come back during the night looking for more food that my dumbass didn't store properly. I didn't know at the time that they ventured in that area. I only had my 22 pistol with me and had to scare it off twice in the night. I doubt that I'll ever have to use my 45 but it helps me sleep at night.
Truth be told about legal pricks and liars is and caliber is very bad and deadly to the body of us THIN SKINNED types. In the late 1970s a cop friend said they were more worried about .22 cal because hit bones and hit lungs heart etc. Have a great day and this guy really is very good
I love it! I almost did the same. I converted my 45 auto to shoot 45 super as well. To basically has the same muzzle energy as it's 10 mm. But the ammo is expensive and only three companies sell it. It's a give-and-take though versus buying a 10 mm as well which I almost did..... The ammo is a lot cheaper and more available.
I watch Paul’s videos when I want an accurate, adult-oriented discussion of firearms. No speed metal music intro, no tacti-cool gear. Just solid information. Thank you for what you do.
@@charleschristianson2730 Paul’s coat is like an old-school hunting jacket that I had when I was young. It had pockets for a knife, some 22 LR, beef jerky, matches, tinder, the math test that didn’t make it home for a signature, and who knows what else. Good days, good coat.
Miss you, Paul. Thank you for all of the advice, your humor, and well wishes to his family, friends, and all who knew him. What a seemingly wonderful man and human being.
Honestly, the meat target is great, but it's boring compared to the more spoken parts of his presentations, which are just fantastically put together. Paul is clearly a very rehearsed speaker. He knows how to speak in an engaging manner. In his element, just talking continuously for extended periods. A skill many youtubers could stand to recognize the engagement value in.
I assure you, Paul, NOBODY skips forward to the shooting portion. We all watched the whole thing. Your knowledge, experience, stories, and overall quality of content deserves full attention. Keep the good content coming! God bless and stay safe!
I'm a pathologist with training in forensic pathology. I have done forensic autopsies. I can definitively say the ME was full of shit. There is no way to accurately determine whether or not someone was moving based on bullet angle. Subbed for your excellent discussion on the unfortunate Mr. Fish.
Hey man, Was wondering how your experience was doing autopsies? It's a path that I've been pondering and I don't meet people who have done them very often
@@timarmesto2685 @Tim Armesto Not a whole lot of pathologists do forensics full time, as court and depositions are a pain in the ass and it doesn't pay well relative to other specialties. Some/many do them on the side and are contracted by local/state law enforcement agencies for the service. It is also not for those with a strong olfactory sense, as bodies found "in the wild" are always in varying states of decomposition (as opposed to hospital autopsies). The worst one I ever did was a teenager who died of self-immolation. He smelled like barbeque. Autopsies can take from 17 minutes to 2.5 hours in my experience and are somewhat physically demanding. A board certified forensic pathologist in the US requires 4 years of college pre-med, 4 years of medical school and 3-4 years of pathology residency. A forensic pathology fellowship is an additional year.
Been stopped by the police several times, explained I was minding my own business, and went on my way. Refusing to answer any questions would mean I was several thousand quid worse off in lawyers fees and missed work.
Simple, we're not always attracted to accurate, reliable good data. "You do you". Paul is doing what he enjoys most, Matt with Demolition ranch is doing what he enjoys. By the nature we'll be attracted more as a whole to what Matt does, and he's a good person to show someone that you're converting to be pro 2A after you've taken them to the range and gotten them somewhat acclimated to get them hyped. Paul is the person you show them when they are invested in the 2A and want to continue to make good investments... Not the world's best example, but yeah it's what my brain pulled together with minimal effort while I sit here in the dark, wondering how I live in a house with 2 wine bottles and no wine opener....
Because Paul puts nearly all his effort into making the best possible content and doesn't spend time trying to promote his UA-cam channel. It's part of his charm. The subs will come. I bet Paul's engagement metrics are off the charts. I'd love to see them.
Theres a war on science and factual data with evidence. People just want to hear things that favor with thier beliefs and interest now istead of listening to people like this that take the time and have the experience and knowledge to set forth real information. Its sad
That’s why FPS Russia (despite having been the most popular UA-cam gun channel at the time) was never very interesting to me because I think he was pandering to the masses instead of gun enthusiasts, “the secular crowd” if you will.
I’ll just stick to my .45 ball ammo after that presentation. Plus if they try to prosecute me they will say I was just old and using a 100 plus year old 45. Win win! Your a genius Paul!
Thing I always worry about is missing that first shot. Those mega death rounds (to borrow Paul's terminology) make it slow to recover and reacquire the target. And bears move fast.
That’s a true statement. I broke my sternum in a wreck recently and when the sternum breaks all you are worried about is trying not to pass out due to the really tiny breathes you are taking now.
So glad that you’re here explaining to people who haven’t had an educated grandfather, father and other old experienced shooters to give such detailed explanations. Thanks for always presenting informative videos with spot on details.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
I just discovered his channel and subscribed last night. I find myself sometimes fast-forwarding through some parts of the shooting so that I can get to the "boring" part. So, if you are weird, you're not the only one.
This weeks' shotgun news is exclusively about 10mm. I remember 20 years ago I was the only person in handgun competition that shot a 10mm, everybody said it was an obsolete caliber. Glad to see it making a comeback.
@@atc_av8er The Glock can also handle the full power 10mm. I was shooting full power ammo in my colt delta elite, and people warned me about the potential for the frame or slide to crack, even though I was running a 25 lb Wolf recoil spring with a shock buffer and a full length tungsten guide rod. So I bought the G20 to shoot full power ammo in competition.
The thing folks fail to mention is that most people discount the fact that others tend to leave their heavier guns behind sometimes because they're cumbersome. I've almost done it a few times. 1911s are a key example. When you have one, GREAT! But when you don't because you're wearing gym shorts in 200°F heat, well then BAMM point made. Now if was actually required to use one, OF COURSE I would want the biggest bullet available (I train with 9mm, .40, and .45). I'm starting to think of purchasing a 357SIG barrel for my truck (anti vehicle), and carrying a 9mm drop in barrel in a Glock 27 (limited to 10 rd magazines in California so use 9mm in the .40 mags, shhhh!)
Every time Paul says "now for the boring part where I talk..." is always super interesting. I loved the Miami Dade video I think it's the most interesting video I've ever seen on UA-cam. I would love for you to talk more about shootings
Brenden Leier Completely agree and have stated it more than once. I love the meat targets but appreciate his commentary more than anything. I would also thoroughly enjoy hearing Paul break down more famous shootings.
Great video. My wife has a Glock 30 and I have an XDm 10mm and I've shot both and have come to the same conclusion you have. Both are great and capable rounds. The 'flip' and recoil is more on the XDm 10mm than the Glock 30. This difference has made the XDm not fun to shoot for my wife. Surprisingly she is much more comfortable with the 230gr .45 hollow points than she is with the 180 hollow points in the 10mm. Ammo availability is a concern but I've actually found here in NH that less people own 10mm pistols and therefore 10mm is easier to purchase than the .45. You are absolutely correct on the price difference as I'm paying over a dollar a round on the 10mm ammo where the .45 can be purchased, when found, for around .75 per round. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with in the end. I love the XDm 10mm and she loves the Glock 30 .45 ACP. Either way, if anyone breaks into our house, it will be a really bad day for them.
_"[S]ome of the things he said were contradictory to what other people had said. For example he said this happened at six thirty, while someone who was some distance away but heard the gunsfire said it happened at five thirty."_ I'll start by admitting my post here is a bit of a tangent, which has nothing necessarily to do with firearms. That being said: The quote above is a perfect example of why you should *NEVER* talk to police, if you are even possibly suspected of a crime. While everybody knows that _"Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law"_ The part that the average joe doesn't know is that legally, literally nothing you say to police can _HELP_ to you in a court of law; any way, at all, EVER. Seriously. Telling the police you didn't do it doesn't help you. Telling them an alibi doesn't help you. It can ONLY hurt you. What Mr. Fish should have done is call 911, tell them a man has been shot, needs medical attention, and administered CPR; as he did. BUT... when asked by the dispatcher or police what happened, he should have said something along the lines of "I'm sorry, I can't answer questions until I see my lawyer." If he had done that, it's very likely he wouldn't even have been charged. Note it doesn't even have anything to do with lying. It's completely possible neither Mr. Fish nor the witness actually lied. One of them easily could have just been mistaken about the time. But if Mr. Fish had kept his mouth shut, there'd have been no conflicting statement at all. But instead the jury got to hear that his statement differed from a witness, a witness who had ZERO motive to lie as he assumedly didn't know Mr. Fish or the man who was shot. But Mr. Fish is accused of a crime, and if he DID commit a crime he has a clear motive to lie. So between the two, who is the jury going to believe? Or at least, who's statement are they going to put to scrutiny? Mr. Fish indeed might have been quite innocent, and very possibly told the police the 100% god's honest truth. Yet despite that, he spent 3 years in prison for it. Don't make that mistake. Unless you're the victim of a crime or the witness of a crime and you want to help the police find the person that did it, talking to the police could easily be the biggest mistake of your life.
Truth. Police serve their own interests - not yours. It just so happens police interests and civilian interest line up about 80% of the time. Never forget, the police answer to some form of governing power - not you. They serve and protect the governing power - not you. The police patrol and arrest in the interest of that governing power - not you. Rely on yourself, and your training and knowledge - never the police. Be safe, be wary, and be smart.
And of course, there ARE genuinely GOOD LEO's out there - but at the end of the day, they answer to a system that sees you as a statistic - not a person. If the law makers say 'X', can you really expect that LEO to forgo his salary job to protect you, a nameless person they have no ties to? That LEO's job is how he eats, how he supports his family, how his kids go to college. Don't expect anyone to turn their back on their salary and pension to save your skin - because they most likely won't. Be skeptical of any man who has the power to destroy your life in seconds.
@@WilliamMcAdams yup, not even on a traffic stop, if the cop asks, by way of a lead-off, "How're you doing today?", to which I used to say, "Fine until your lights flashed in my mirror" .... now I will forever say "Not answering any questions." If cops then asks why not, "I say "That's also a question. Did you pass high school English? Not answering !" and roll up window.
I had expected this might be one of the hundreds of videos of overly indulgent guys with point n shoots that add too much chit chat and personal conjecture to a basic traditionalist conclusion. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find an eloquent, well paced, and thoughtful analysis of the main points to consider when actually buying any firearm and the potential legal ramifications that go along with carrying. I think every person that has seen this video left with a lot of new information that is broken down and carefully explained in a very interesting way. Mr. Harrell definitely has the pleasant approach to being a great instructor or teacher. I find it far easier to watch these videos than follow anything by Nutnfancy for example.
he's the opposite of Nutnfancy. both are thorough but nutnfancy is just verbal smorgasbord of self praising, talking about irrelevant topics, showing how good he thinks he shoots and gives completely biased reviews based on random things. he'll like something and then suddenly he'll nitpick on a few random things and give it a bad rating and vice versa. following his advice on gear, guns and ammo will put you on a long road of hurt
Employee at JoAnn Fabric: "Here comes that crazy guy to buy up all of our fleece fabric." Paul Harrell: "Hi. I'd like to purchase those 12 rolls of fleece fabric."
Pauls videos are some of the best on the internet, so well done. This one coulda used a 10mm hardcast handload though. Most of the folks who carry them outdoors in big animal country carry 200 or even 220 hard cast. The JHP's did exactly what they are supposed to. Again, another great video.
As if your content wasn't some of the best on UA-cam, your audience is top shelf. Very rarely seen on any other gun channel. This must be where the adults go to comment.
I guess perhaps now I am obliged to call you a name that attempts to undermine your opinion without presenting any concrete facts. Um. Sorry. I just couldn't think of anything. The troll is not strong with me. I agree. I love the videos and the discussions here. Thank you for your time and effort spend making these.
"This is the boring part of the presentation where i talk." That's my favorite part, Honestly I could listen to you talk about gun history and statistics all day long.
My Mexican ninja carries 9mm FMJ and just shoots for the pelvis. I do the same with 32acp. Ninja says he doesn't know why people waste money on all those fancy bullets.
New Jersey laws are a bit strict but no ware near as bad as California or anything, in general its really ok. I really dont see any problem with FMJ for protection, a piece of steel traveling Mach 1 and hitting your heart or lungs is going to do the job im sure.
well, outside of the big cities in CA you can actually get a permission slip from massa validating your rights. NJ, not so much. Da mafia don like da chumblones wit no gunz. Getz in da way of da protekshun raketz. FMJ was a problem back in the day for cops I've read b/c the bullet would tend to slip around, poke through a body and minimize blood loss in a number of cases. Good for breaking bones though, apparently, which is one reason I carry them in my P-32.
Will be interesting Paul, but good luck ever getting a legal concealed carry permit in NJ that state sucks. I left there over 10 years ago and never looked back.
A lot of folks will blab on forever and then finally say "long story short." I love Paul because he actually knows how to make a long story short. Also, I really appreciate your fair way of explaining the problems with the particular case study you outline. Admitting your lack of information, but also being sure not to vilify anyone involved, including the prosecutors or jury, while acknowledging that bias is a real thing.

That's just one reason I reload. My basic .45 acp load is a 185 XTP@1200 fps (can go much hotter) and 10mm is 155 XTP@1570 fps (Super MAX Load). You should have decent guns with full case support for the hot ammo, but most box ammo is very mild compared to what is possible with a good pistol, especially with 10mm. It's mostly all watered down to be close to equal. Even a lot of .44 Remington magnum is watered down.
G53X0Y0Z0 My thoughts exactly. Additionally, I’d have loved to see some hot hard cast rounds suitable for brown bear country and compared to any .45ACP he’d like to use. The IS NO COMPARISON. Night and Day.
I find your voice and diction to be one of the most relaxing and easy to respect that I have heard in many months. Thank you for doing what you do and handling yourself so professionally!
Ha! Dropped everything within one second of the vid notification. Starting to become one of my favorite channels, and I feel one of the most educational.
He really does make some great videos. Funny thing is the first time I saw one of his videos I thought someone had taken a 20-30 year old vhs tape and converted it to digital format then posted it.
Was considering 10mm for hiking use, but I think 45 ACP in a proper loading will be similar enough. Note: monetization was back in action when I watched, which was good to see! Too bad to hear the story about the guy that spent 3 years in jail for self-defense ...
I've seen many ballistics gel tests and simulations of real human tissue.Never have I seen watermelon being used to represent lung tissue.Never really thought about it but it is very close (lung tissue is a bit more strongly held together but in consistency-quite close). As a 5th year medical student I have come in contact with lung tissue during operations and you sir have my respect for this very well thought trough simulation !
Stay in school, and don't get into the field of ballistics instrumentation. Maybe go with podiatry or something low speed. Watermelon is not even considered as a representation of tissue in the testing world.
Excellent presentation of the 45 vs. 10mm. I really like the way you thoroughly test each caliber. Thank you for your effort and protocol used in determining their respective efficiency. Great work!
If people would stop voting in these lunatic Anti-American, Anti-Constitution dems like obama and biden (the same people essentially) then we wouldn't have to worry about such things Ever. Granted, Trump wasn't exactly 100% friendly to the Constitution, need I mention the bump stock ban but... at least he's never Theatening to take anything away, he never threatened anyone's jobs or tried to Force anything. Never used stupid rhetoric blaming police for things to try to subliminally start a war on cops or say "No Amendment is absolute"... That ALONE should have biden forcefully removed from office. How do you take an oath to Protect and Defend the Constitution and the people then subliminally threaten it like that and it's all okay? People voted for Anti-freedom for some odd reason so of course the actual Patriots for the country are going to be stocking up. Only in a diseased mind would someone actually believe that a member of the establishment (AND a lifelong politician) would be For Americans and For the Constitution..... I thought this country was dumb when obama got voted in for a second term, America literally said hold my beer.
Dudes dry humour cracks me up. I much prefer Paul's vids over "The Yankee Marshall". TYM is for entertainment only. Paul actually give usable information.
The Yankee Marshall said .45 gets stopped by bone in one of his videos about why .45 is useless. He's an idiot. The Lucky Gunner blocked him from his youtube channel for posting dumb shit in the comments. Some of his stuff might be funny but his "facts" are way off.
That fucking dude isn’t even entertaining that dudes just a loud mouth wanna be know it all. Like the other guy said that’s someone that wakes extra early in the morning to either look at himself or beat his wife
This guy is the Alton Brown of ballistics testing, and I mean that as a compliment. Very knowledgeable, makes his presentations interesting, and the sly dry humor, and tone and cadence of his voice is dead on Alton Brown
U my friend are the “bob ross” of firearm UA-cam channels I’ve watched your videos for years and for some reason just now I thought wow this man is really knowledgeable and relaxing at the same time he’s chucking lead down range not many people can pull this off but u have it mastered 💯
It's refreshing to find videos that focus on factual information more than the opinions of someone who spends more time on their tacticool "I'm an operator" beard trim than they do on research. When you boil down the presentation in these videos, the call to action isn't "Do as I suggest". It's "you decide". There's a lot of value in that, unless you're looking for someone to make decisions for you. Thanks, Paul.
I've probably watched 10,000 youtube videos on each popular gun subject, such as "10mm vs. .45 ACP". Yet I continue to watch. I need a secondary hobby.
I've yet to see any other cartridge comparisons that come even within a mile of Paul's comparisons. All other ones I've seen use different barrel length, different ammo, different everything that matters, resulting in some extremely un scientific data. Not to mention the lack of realistic tests such as the meat target. Paul's quality can't be beat.
Paul Harrell and GunBlue490 are the only true Gun experts on YT due to their vast field experience and armory knowledge. We should be grateful for such excellent teachers and give what support we could.
Hello Paul, I'm planning on purchasing a 1911 in 10mm for my collection. Thank you for posting this video about the 10mm, your presentations are on point with superb narration. I appreciate your fire arms experience and research.
I find it interesting that one year after the great ammopocalypse, that I was able to purchase a box of .45acp for the same price mentioned in this video from 2017. While 9mm is still stupid, .45 prices have not been effected as much, meaning it was always an expensive round to shoot frequently. Paul is DaMan.
9mm in my area is 14.99 a box. 10mm in my area is 32.99. 45 auto in my area is 34.99. its all expensive including 28.99 a box for 40 s&w. i sold my 40 for cash to get 10mm. because its a 4 dollar difference between the two boxes
I see nothing wrong with the 10mm. I think it's good powerful round, but I'm so used to using a 1911 in 45 acp that I feel I don't have no need for a 10mm.
As a handloader it's easy to duplicate 45 acp loads in 10mm and you get an extra round or two in the same size magazine. I'm a die-hard 1911 guy, but there really is no downside to 10mm. I just picked up a couple boxes of ammo yesterday from the local sporting goods store for $19 a box and there was no 45 available.
@@wirebrush Being in NY we are stuck with low cap magazines which makes my smaller than average hands better suited to a single stack 1911 with slim grips and a short trigger. The main load is Double Tap Ammo's 135 JHP which registers 16,000 fps out of a Glock 20. I have a backup mag of their 200 grain controlled expansion JHP at 1250 fps out of a 5" barrel.
One of the best analyses I have seen. Great balance between shooting and argumentation on the subject. Congratulations and greetings from Poland to the author.
I just watched this again, after watching it 6 months to a year ago. It just gets 19 '0 eleventy 12 better each time. The networks are missing out by not giving Paul a show. Then again, they seem to have a strong political agenda in the opposite direction.
Online shopping basically eliminates the availability problem and bypasses the higher prices common when you are lucky enough to find it locally. But there is still a clear price premium. With my first online ammo purchase, 10 was 50% more than 9: $15 vs. $10 per box. Defensive ammo follows a similar pattern.
Exactly. When I bought my G21, I felt the grip of a number of other models and really liked the G37. The problem with that was the G37 is .45 GAP, which I've only seen in a handful of places in the last decade. One criterion for buying a gun is availability of ammo. Wildcat calibers are a big no-go for me.
I like the idea of 10mm, but the ammo is stupid. A lot of 10mm manufacturers don't load them with enough powder. You end up with what is effectively 40S&W with a longer case.
I actually bought a Glock model 29 today. It was the cheapest Glock on the shelf at $492, brand new. And with the price of 9mm being ridiculous because Covid and the riots, it was only $2.75 more for a box of 10mm (target ammo) over the 9mm (target ammo) Strange times we live in to be sure. I shot 100 rounds at the range after buying it, and boy, does that 10mm bark like a pissed off Rottweiler! I fell in love after the first mag, and I actually hit the bullseye on the target at 10 yards MUCH better than I normally do with my Glock 19 or my Sig M18. I was a bit surprised. Love the 10mm. Instant fan of it.
The Late Col. Cooper's involvement with the 10MM was to bring ".45 ACP ballistics" farther down range. With the demise of the Bren 10, the Late Colonel concluded that pistol confrontations are usually up close, well withing the effective range of the .45 ACP. Clint Smith of Thunder ranch proclaimed "If you shoot someone over 10 yards, yo will have a lot of explaining to do"
The pplus .45 is of the charts nasty on target ive a frend whos dads a surgeon he said he had never seen such a large exit hole apparently the patient took one to the upper thigh and it nearly blew his leg off i cant even remember how that convo came up i think i asked whats the most nasty thing you have had to fix and that was his answer if memory serves me he said there was a tiny hole at the front and the guys leg was missing at the back and it even took a good chunk of his ass cheek off aswell .45 is a nasty ol round for sure
4:45 10mm has about a 20% increase in velocity and the number one thing that affects kinetic energy the speed of said object, in the end that extra 200 fps give the 10mm a dramatic increase in power over the 45 acp a 40% increase which using Paul's line "THAT'S A LOT MORE"
@Rusty Shackleford It depends on bullet weight, if you use a light 10mm Hollow Point bullet it will transfer all its energy even faster and in a shorter distance than a .45 and will be better in everything
@Rusty Shackleford If the penetration distance is too short the bullet has insufficient penetration, which is bad, according to FBI the ideal penetration is between 12 and 18 inches of ballistic gel, the 10mm with the right bullet can have the desired penetration and transfer much more energy than a 45, a lighter bullet penetrates less and transfer more energy faster, while a heavier bullet penetrates more and has more energy retention, as a result it will transfer less energy to the target, the 10mm auto is simply much more powerful than 45 ACP, the 45 is worst in everything except the recoil compared to the 10mm, it is all about physics
@Rusty Shackleford If 10mm uses hollow point ammo it is superior in everything to the 45 ACP, there is nothing to talk about, it does a bigger permanent cavity, if you talk about FMJ you are right but not if it is hollow point ammo
You know Mr. Harrell I really don't know which I enjoy more; your extensive knowledge and training or your since of humor. I always have a good chuckle watching you videos. Thanks for being you and sharing.
The video re-affirms my faith in the 45 acp. There scads of more modern cartridges out there but, for reasons Paul stated in the video, we once again realize that sometimes the old stuff just works.
could it not be from repeated use of the weapon? I am unfamiliar with the behavior of the equipment in general, but my laboratory discipline is itching.
@@bakabiru2519 it's common but not impressive s.d. and I'm sure that you've noticed that these are demonstrations rather than rigorous comparisons. The meat targets seldom even are made of the same materials from one iteration to the next. Useful, but it bothers me how many people seem to think they trump scientifically rigorous testing.
@@GunFunZS You can't get watermelon all year, so the oranges or grapefruit bag has to do it. I still prefer it to the ballistic gel, mostly for the ribs. If you can't get past them, you'll do little damage. At the same time the gel isn't always the same either. Did one mix it up correctly? How cold is it during the test? That stuff gets significantly harder at lower temperatures. Still, this is now scientifically testing as long as it's not under lab conditions.
@@onpsxmember I'm aware of that all that. there is a reason that Paul used to make a big point of saying " and that tells us what it tells us. " These are useful demonstrations but the various gel and gel alternative tests are the more telling thing. At least they are so long as the tester shows the protocol that he's using and that is protocol is comparable to the proper protocol. There are many who don't control the variables that need controlled but there are also many who do. I wish I could get my hands on ballistic soap, or a protocol for making it, and calibrating it but I haven't ever found one.
45 ACP is the best defensive round. With its size it has the stopping power but not the dangerous penetration that can cause collateral damage like the 9mm, and 10mm. Even if you kill the person that you are defending yourself against, but if the bullet penetrates and injures or kill a bystander you will be responsible. You are responsible for every bullet you fire. 45 ACP is the perfect self defense round.
@@johnstockton8138 there no such thing as stopping power with anemic pistol cartridges. The 9mm has more hydrostatic shock because it is faster. Not to mention 9mm, 40, and 45 all penetrate about a foot and expand to about .7 of an inch. 9mm relies more on speed and 45 relies more on bullet weight to do the same thing
@James "there no such thing as stopping power with anemic pistol cartridges. " In terms of stopping power pistols are just at the lower spectrum of the scale in comparison to rifles, shotguns, and other more powerful firearms. It is not non-existent. Pistols are in the category of firearms just like rifles, shotguns and other more powerful firearms. I think the firearms community would agree that the term stopping power applies to all firearms. I'll give you this though. The stopping power of the 45 acp vs 9mm can be disputed. The difference between the cartridges is not night and day like a 9mm vs a 357 mag, 44 mag or a 500 SW. However, the 45 acp creates bigger wound channels than the 9mm because it is a bigger bullet and is less likely to overpenetrate due to its lower speed. This means it is effective as a self defense cartridge but yet less likely to overpenetrate compared to the smaller lighter faster moving 9mm cartridge. Remember, in any self-defense situation you are responsible for every bullet you fire. If you overpenetrate and injure or kill a bystander you will be responsible regardless.
@@johnstockton8138 the whole reloading community laughs at people that refer to stopping power when it comes to pistols. No the 45 doesnt create bigger wound channels. It is bigger in diameter yes. But it doesnt expand nearly enough because it goes a lot slower. The 9mm expands more because it goes faster but it also loses velocity faster because it is a lighter bullet. That's why they both expand to .7 of an inch and penetrate about a foot. They just do it differently

I'm a pathologist with training in forensic pathology. I have done forensic autopsies. I can definitively say the ME was full of shit. There is no way to accurately determine whether or not someone was moving based on bullet angle. Subbed for your excellent discussion on the unfortunate Mr. Fish.
Hey man,
Was wondering how your experience was doing autopsies?

Yup ... grew up in the Alaskan Bush ... if all you had was a 22 and were in dire need ... you'd be loving it.
A brick in your hand is worth a tank a block away.

For example he said this happened at six thirty, while someone who was some distance away but heard the gunsfire said it happened at five thirty."_
I'll start by admitting my post here is a bit of a tangent, which has nothing necessarily to do with firearms. That being said:
The quote above is a perfect example of why you should *NEVER* talk to police, if you are even possibly suspected of a crime.

Paul Harrell and Honest Outlaw are the only two I go to when I want an honest, educated opinion.
Hickok45 is pretty awesome, as well.
Justin Opinion is good as well
One of the biggest problems of testing 10mm, is finding actual 10mm loads, and not watered down 10mm, loaded to .40 S&W spec.
Have you checked out if buffalo bore makes real hot 10mm? Or Underwood?
@@danielaramburo7648 buffalo bore makes a fine 10mm I use it up here in Alaska for bear defense

10mm kills the body, 45ACP kills the soul

Seems odd watching older videos now that Paul is no longer with us. Glad he left us such a rich library that will be useful for years into the future.
HOLY SHIT, me too lmfao.
Was considering 10mm for hiking use, but I think 45 ACP in a proper loading will be similar enough. Note: monetization was back in action when I watched, which was good to see! Too bad to hear the story about the guy that spent 3 years in jail for self-defense ...
Paul is the New Retro Wave of UA-cam gunner channels. Brilliant!
It is a shame, Bob, considering that you were working on S&W's revolver barrel assembly line.
What round have u seen the most effect on a human?
I am watching all of Paul’s old videos. Thank you Paul, we love you!
I was late to work today because I watched this before leaving home. I regret nothing.
Excellent presentation of the 45 vs. 10mm. I really like the way you thoroughly test each caliber. Thank you for your effort and protocol used in determining their respective efficiency. Great work!
Remington Green Box is a very anemic 10mm load
Kevin Roberts , Federal American Eagle is also quite anemic. They push a 180 gr. FMJ to 1030 fps. The lightweight 40 S&W loads pack more punch.

Ah, the good ol days when you could find either of these cartridges
LOL! That’s the truth. I haven’t found ANY ammunition locally that’s is anything other than some very odd sizes for special guns.
Weirdly, I find it easier to get my hands on 10mm. The .45 tends to fly off the shelf.
lol right... can't find .45 locally anymore where I am.
Never seen Yankee Marshal shoot a gun. talks about them plenty but never shoots one in a video.
Gurn Blanstein He has shot on occasion in multiple videos...

This guy is the Alton Brown of ballistics testing, and I mean that as a compliment. Very knowledgeable, makes his presentations interesting, and the sly dry humor, and tone and cadence of his voice is dead on Alton Brown

I've probably watched 10,000 youtube videos on each popular gun subject, such as
"10mm vs.
Yes, he does a good job.
Paul Harrell and GunBlue490 are the only true Gun experts on YT due to their vast field experience and armory knowledge. We should be grateful for such excellent teachers and give what support we could.

Hello Paul,
I'm planning on purchasing a 1911 in 10mm for my collection.
There is no "boring part" of your presentations! Keep up the content!
I feel like both rounds would be effective. I personally have a 10mm. Great comparison video.
I see nothing wrong with the 10mm. I think it's good powerful round, but I'm so used to using a 1911 in 45 acp that I feel I don't have no need for a 10mm.
Ditto
Guys-
Rock Island Armory offers an M-1911-A2 double-stack+ for less than $1k !
@@kennethfharkin 16,000 fps 10mm? Those must be those nuclear loads i hear about
One of the best analyses I have seen.
I would say ammo price and availability is really the main drawback to the 10mm. Great video as always.
@@matts1166 i imagine that lots of people want exactly that, though. probably a big seller.
I actually bought a Glock model 29 today. It was the cheapest Glock on the shelf at $492, brand new. And with the price of 9mm being ridiculous because Covid and the riots, it was only $2.75 more for a box of 10mm (target ammo) over the 9mm (target ammo)
Strange times we live in to be sure.

Phill Huddleston “most thugs use a 9mm” ?? Wrong. Say what you mean

10mm has about a 20% increase in velocity and the number one thing that affects kinetic energy the speed of said object, in the end that extra 200 fps give the 10mm a dramatic increase in power over the 45 acp a 40% increase which using Paul's line "THAT'S A LOT MORE"
@Rusty Shackleford It depends on bullet weight, if you use a light 10mm Hollow Point bullet it will transfer all its energy even faster and in a shorter distance than a .45 and will be better in everything
Love the smooth quality and extremely well researched content, you deserve 10x the subscriber's 👍🇦🇺

Absolutely love your videos! You are very straight forward with your info. And it's nice to see someone from around my neck of the woods.
The video re-affirms my faith in the 45 acp. There scads of more modern cartridges out there but, for reasons Paul stated in the video, we once again realize that sometimes the old stuff just works.
Am I the only one disappointed at how inconsistent the expensive defensive ammo was compared to the cheap target ammo with chrono readings?
No. You're not alone. I thought there'll be a bigger difference.
could it not be from repeated use of the weapon? I am unfamiliar with the behavior of the equipment in general, but my laboratory discipline is itching.
@@bakabiru2519 it's common but not impressive s.d. and I'm sure that you've noticed that these are demonstrations rather than rigorous comparisons. You can't get watermelon all year, so the oranges or grapefruit bag has to do it.
Wow, I am impressed with the performance of. 45 acp!!! I love my 45, and wouldn't trade it for anything
What performance? It is slower than hell lol
@James
"there no such thing as stopping power with anemic pistol cartridges. "
In terms of stopping power pistols are just at the lower spectrum of the scale in comparison to rifles, shotguns, and other more powerful firearms.
I appreciate the thorough nature of your presentation. You sir, have saved me a lot of money in my pursuit of the right handgun for me. Thank you!
