- Join Morag Gamble (moraggamble.com / permacultureeducationinstitut...) in her permaculture garden live at 5 series. The topic in this clip is Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) which is all edible and amazing - the sweet crisp tubers, the purple crown and the large soft leaves.
Yacon is a perennial from the daisy family - related to the sunflower - and originally from the Andes, this plant is used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Eat the root raw or cooked. Use the leaves as spinach or a wrap. Make yacon syrup from the roots as a sugar alternative for diabetics. It's also a great mid-story plant in your forest garden. A perennial in warm climates and an annual in cooler areas.

tried first yacon today out of the garden it reminds me of nashi pear with a touch of ginger
I live in the Dandenongs the hills of Melbourne. I grow Yacon and never remove it and store the crown. It works even though we are in a temperate area. When it dies back, I divide the crown and replant and then in spring it all comes back. Sadly I didn't realise that they don't store like a sweet potato and left them in a basket on the bench. The were covered in mould within a 5 days and the smell. A waste of a about 4 kilos of tubers. Thanks for the tips of using the leaves.
For whatever reason UA-cam chose to put your comment first so I can read it. Eildon Victoria here and wondering if I had to store the Crown and here is your comment telling me exactly what I need to know. Thank you!
A very good and informativ video 🤗! I live in Germany and we grow yacon in high raised beds and they are about 2m high. The "fruits" are so fresh and delicious 💯👍. We harvest them after it gets Frost. Greetings from the other end of the world.
Hello. Thanks for sharing your experience with them. Yes, they do get so tall. They are such an abundant source of food and like you say, so delicious.
I just found your channel. Thank You Mother for sharing your knowledge and love
We grow Yacon and after a good wash eat it with the skin on when cooked. Everyone seems to say peel them.
You give the full information that we want. Thanks
Lovely, thanks for sharing.
Wow thanks a lot this was so informative
I'm delighted that was helpful. It is such an interesting plant.
I tried growing these this year in my garden in the United States, South Central Pennsylvania. That's in U.S. agricultural zone 6b. They got about knee high, and I only got a few very small tubers. They were good, but reminded me of a young mild carrot in flavor, with the crunchy watery texture described. They weren't as sweet as a carrot though. I'm going to try some leaves today, and I might dehydrate some for tea. I'll try to store the crown over winter for another try next spring. Interestingly, when I cut the stems I found them full of ants! It didn't really seem to ba affecting the plants though. I think that perhaps vine boreres got into the base and the ants took advantage of the space provided. It's a very pretty plant at least.
Very helpful and informative and easy to understand thankyou
Thank you! :D
Hi, I really enjoy your videos a lot. When I google how eatable is figs leaves are I found you. Well all your info. has been very useful, I have a small fig tree in my back yard and because I does not want to expose my self to covi 19 going to the market, well I started making scrambled eggs with fig leaves and you now what, is taste pretty good, also I have been using my pomegranate leaves to put in soups. Thanks for having this channel.
Awesome, thank you!
I am watching on your yacon plants show i am really interested to grow new for me and i love to try it.
Hello there. Thank you for explaining the way you did. it's wonderful to hear from you. I was wondering what are the other ways yacon can be eaten.
Raw and cooked, juiced and dried. Superbly versatile 😀
Hi Morag, I love your videos. How do you use the leaves?
Thank you for this wonderful information! Can one grow such a plant from a bulb only? I can buy a rhizome here but it is crazy expensive. If it is possible to grow the rhizomes/plant from a bulb, would you be so kind and tell me how? Thank you so much!
Please advise; can these be canned or dehydrated? I can only get bits of information. Thanks
Peel it chilled it.... Yummy crystal crunchy and juicy. Fresh will be great unless you really need to cure it. It's a very fragile rhizome and easy rotting so handle with care.
Planting from cutting is easy like planting sweet potatoes and tapioca plants.
Love it
Consume rhizome for diet and constipation.
Leaf could boost insulin, consume or brew tea. Some places call it Insulin Plant best for diabetes. Pls consult doc before taking it.
Thanks, I've wanted to grow it for a while. I live in central Florida, USA Zone 9b. Do they need full sun (which can be brutal here), more half sun/part shade, or full shade?
They definitely don't need full sun. At least in my climate in North Germany, a partially shady spot is fine (if not preferred)
what about yacon flower is it edible? can you make it into tea?
Just ordered a rhizome, can't wait to try it
fantastic - it's delicious
Can you plant the root to grow the plant?
You can complement with a culinary recipe , please??
❤Dankeschön ❤
Can yacon grow outdoor all year ground ?
Thanks
Where did you buy your seed?
Is it possible i can buy from you a seeds or-seedlings if you dont mind
Where can I find this plants
My ya on don't taste sweet it taste like a radish. So I don't know if they need to stay in the ground I dug them out after first frost.
Once I've dug mine up, I let it sweeten in the sun for a week. Also I think perhaps that you might want to leave it longer in the ground
I would like to try grow where should I get seed??
Can you sell seed me??
Can you use the leaves in a smoothie?
The leaves are slightly bitter. So you need something sweet to hide the taste.
the answer is a Nashi Pear.
Hello, can I plant yacon in MD zone 7a? Thanks
In a warm and protected spot - it may not have enough growing time to produce much to eat though.
Can I get a seed
How long after planting u harvest
6 months or so
maybe even 9 months. After plant dies off.
Where can i buy the Yacon plant in the USA?
just do a quick internet search - you should find some sources close to you. It will be readily available.
One interesting thing about the "permaculture" plants is the deer will not eat them. They will eat scrubs to the ground but will not touch the "magic moringa tree".
How wonderful! It makes gardening so much easier doesn't it.
@@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife There were no deer here ever but they started moving in 10 plus years ago. Now you can't plant any "normal" vegetables. It is fairly depressing.
Use a seaweed/fish emulsion foliar feeding - deer tend to avoid a fish smell and over time it may keep them from coming around as much - just a thought and still a clean organic growing method.
@@rebeccahenkins1697 I've tried everything. The only thing that works is two fences and I can only afford one.
I have Yacon it is a large plastic pot it doesnt get very big prob as in a pot and prob dont get as much roots off it. Oneday like to plant it out
It is very unusal taste and the crunch is a suprise
Wow didnt know the leaves where edible
I am in Albury NSW so it stays in the pot and comes back the next year
I got it out of Curiosity🤣😂🤣😊
Hi, where can I order some? I'm in the USA. Thanx😁
I usually order most of my rarer perennial vegetables off of ebay.
Lynda Flame Alvarez try farmers market, health food shop, etc
What is the prospect for commercial purpose?
Yacon syrup - diabetic friendly sugar alternative
I mean: to complete your report w/ a recipe
To some of you out there, take too much before meeting someone could be embarrassing. Fart a lot.
LOL
Too much probably 1 kg but definitely depends on how your body react.
Does eating this make you fart like eating Sunchoke? They are very similar.
haha - not in my experience ;)
