    I've been growing yacon for the last 3 years (also in zone 9a) and found they store really well in my root cellar for months without any loss of crispiness, but nice and sweet. I ate my last ones from winter 2023 in August, though I transferred them to the fridge in July as they were beginning to lose moisture by then. Great crop! Super happy with them.

      @@freedomforestlife Thank you for your friendly and fast reply. Last winter the temperature went down to minus twenty degrees but I store the big buckets in a cellar room with 9 degrees. Then I harvest one bucket after the other when needed and store the rhizomes in potting soil. Thanks to you I learned that it was good not to water the rhizomes. A Vietnamese UA-camr 'Mei Mei kitchen' made an interesting video about the 6 ways how she uses her Yacon. Some other people make tea from the dried leaves and in Austria you can buy Yacon Beer. Marmalade and other sweets are made too and I am looking for receipts. This year I started with my first 10 plants and will specialize on Yacon, trying to get more land. Our first frost came in October this year in Northern Germany. .

      Hi Richard, glad to hear our video answered your questions 😊 we have made quite a few about Yacon, as we love it so much! Yes, you should be totally fine to do this in NZ, I would still recommend giving a good layer of woodchip mulch though, just to be safe if you did happen to get any cold snaps, but should be all good eitherway unless you are right down south or in a frost pocket. Plus It helps to keep the soil nice a loose for an easier harvest and gives a great feed too, so win win - thanks for watching ✌️🌿

      Good idea Ed - Once they've had a year to grow, I'd maybe try a heavy woodchip mulch on some plants in the ground to see how they go, but also divide/take some of the tips out and pot on to overwinter as a back up ... and a great trial too 💚✌️🌿

Yea you can def do that, you can probably get away with -7c outside with a heavy mulch..just pot them like you would any other plant and dont let them sit 'wet' all winter, just so the soil/compost feels slightly moist..when you cut them into tiny peices seems to encourage rotting more..thanks for watching!

There are not any 'varieties' available most places in the world, there is the 'white' skinned that we have in the video and a red varietie sometimes sold as movado, we prefer the standard white skinned ones, the taste is abit differient, the red is almost abit savoury fresh and turns to more of a honey sweetness when stored, whereas the white cures abit sugur sweetness!

    I`m very pleased to find your videos, so much information !! I bought some Yacon plants about 6inches tall, from a well known plant & seed catolugue, they`re goog and healthy looking. My question is, am I too late to plant them in the ground or shall i put them in pots for this year ??

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  2 роки тому

      hi Jane, I’d say it’s best to put them out, so they can spread as much as they please. Things always do better in the ground than in pots we find - depending on where you are/your winter lows, will be the decider for where they can stay out with good mulch all winter or be repotted and brought in after harvest time… even if you don’t get a good harvest this year, but can mulch and leave in for next year, should make the plants stronger for next season by planting out now - depending on. climate again, some people say it’s best not to harvest for the first year anyway to let the plant grow on - we harvested for year 1, but years 2,3 etc defo bigger yields 😊✌️🌿

    I harvested my yacon a few days ago and was quite pleased with the results. It’s my first year growing them and I imagine next year will be even better as the plant matures.

    Thanks. Lesley

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Lesley, thank you, oh cool, we grow the red one too, we call that the honey one, as that one tends to cure with abit more of a honey flavour than sugur! if you lift your plant and maybe wash it off to make things clearer, the tips are grouped at the bottom of the stem nearish the soil level, they are little nobbly bits that look like groups of buds.. the tubers tend to hang like we showed in the video and are smooth and fairly roundish...we have another video we did a year or two ago which might show things slightly clearer possibly!
