PORSCHE 997 AFTERMARKET RADIO DIY

  • I recently installed an aftermarket audio unit in the Turbo. I wanted to update the usability of the stereo, navigation and infotainment system to something similarly found in a modern-day car.
    I chose to go with a SONY wireless apple CarPlay head unit. It is a double din screen within a single din chassis. Its sleek and simple design blends nicely in the interior space and the wireless connectivity really helps ease of use, convenience while also keeping the interior space neat and tidy. The capacitive touch is superb and the unit as a whole is real joy to have and use. The factory PCM in the 997.1 cars are pretty dated, and though they appear "correct" in the cabin, it just lacks the modern features that make life easier.
    This video is somewhat of a DIY of how to install an aftermarket head unit into a 997 while still retaining the factory amplifier and wiring. It outlines the construction, function and system description of a Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) ring. It also identifies the inputs on the factory harness that are needed to power the components and shows exact pinouts of the vehicle wiring that I chose to use to make everything work.
    The components used:
    -SONY XAV-AX600
    -METRA 997 double din surround
    -MOST Fiber Optic Converter box
    -MICRO HDMI to Lightning adapter cable

    Hi! Doing same project for my 2007 4s, with Sony xav 6000. Questions: how did you physically connect the 12v constant, 12v switch and ground to the car? Did you use posi tap, strip wire then tap? You did not show this in your video. I’m new to this and would appreciate any help, thank you!

    • @NSXavier997
      @NSXavier997  3 місяці тому

      Hello. I ran the inputs from the head units wire harness to the appropriate terminals on the vehicles connectors behind the radio (constant 12v and ground) and to the connector by the passengers footwell (switched 12v). I did not cut or solder, but rather tinned the ends of each wire and just back-probed them into the connectors terminal receptacles. It’s not as secure as using a tap or cutting/soldering, but it prevents any type of hacking of the factory wire harness. I did not want to cut the factory harness at all.

    • @NSXavier997
      @NSXavier997  3 місяці тому

      It does have it. Can’t work without it. It’s not outlined in the video but the RCA cables are plugged into the most converter box and into the SONY head unit via “connector 2”. Connector 2’s location can be found in the head units operating manual.

    @NsXavier …. Nice work! question for you. Did you consider using Porsche’s new PCM upgrade, or the Kenwood, instead of the Sony you chose? What led you to chose the Sony? (price, power rms output, rca preamps for future amps subwoofers).

    • @NSXavier997
      @NSXavier997  28 днів тому +1

      Thanks.. I considered the PCCM+ but just couldn't justify the price. Basic wired carplay and it has to be plugged in from the front. I chose the SONY because of the clean looking outer bezel.

    Just got a similar radio installed in my cayman. Would you still recommend the 997.1 platform? Been really looking at a 2008 Carrera s.

    • @NSXavier997
      @NSXavier997  11 місяців тому

      Yes I would recommend the 997.1 platform. I’m not very well versed on the 997’s outside of the Turbo / GT3’s, so you’ll want to do some homework about engine specifics and reliability. I think some early 997’s Carreras were prone to the dreaded IMS failure.
