Over the past few months I've been working on a project I've wanted to do for a long time: I bought a used 2009 Porsche Cayman S, and I've been upgrading it over the summer! After wrapping the car, fitting new wheels, tires and suspension, and other cosmetic mods I realized the one thing I was missing is modern integration in the Apple Ecosystem. A car can be new or old, but the most impactful thing in my opinion is being integrated with modern mapping systems, music streaming, voice control and hands free messaging through Apple CarPlay. Fortunately, a company has come up with a solution for installing wireless Appel CarPlay in older Porsche, Audi, BMW, and other makes!

I had zero clue Luke was a car guy. That’s brilliant!!! Super excited for content on channel 2
Same here!!
Same!
Dang, Apple and modifying an older German car in one video?!? All my favorites combined into one! Thanks Luke and happy holidays to you and all who read this comment
But making the Cayman s even more shit with apple isn't mine 😅
German?
Porsche is a German company and every Cayman, the model Luke is driving, is made in Osnabrück, Germany
Yessir
@@sonickautschuhe haha yeah bro
Nice car, Luke! I've been in the market for one of these too, but I'd personally have the 6 speed manual. I work on cars for a living and I work on tons of Porsches. These really are great cars. Fairly reliable and not the worst to DIY. And of course is phenomenal to drive. I know you're going to fall in love with it.
I wouldn't put anything that isn't original to the car.
Sure, but can you drive manual? Peace.
Definitely. Sport cars should be bought in manual transmission. I've been daily driving my manual car in LA for more than 8 years now, wouldn't trade it for anything
@@tangocash342 Lame, not like most cars are gonna gain value anyways.
Great choice on the cayman. Great handlers and you got that perfect model for daily driving
I think so too!
Nice to see that you have impeccable taste in cars Luke!
@@lukemiani hi I love your channel… I was wondering where can I purchase something like this for my SUV , I HAVE A 2019 Dodge Journey GT AWD , THE DOUBLE DIN OR DISPLAY has everything but navigation the lower end model do but I have no idea where and how to look for something, .. I appreciate all your input…
The moment you covered the shift stick to avoid scratching it, I fell in love with your attention to detail. Keep it up! It was both new and entertaining.
Getting more adventurous with these mods! Hell yeah.
It proves that ifixit tools are working very smoothly on Porsche
I have a base model honda civic that had a basic bluetooth radio in it from the factory. I bought a apple carplay radio made specifically for my car from a manufacturer called Dasaita and it was a game changer. It was made specifically for my car so it actually added features my old radio didn’t offer like telling me which door is open, giving me moving lines in the camera while backing up, and a bunch more features that are actually useful! It actually made me love my car and seeing you be able to do something similar is awesome. Thanks for making great videos all these years!
Adding a highpass filter on your voice-over will remove sub pops. You wont hear it on a phone but makes a difference for people watching on tv and avr amps.
Knowing that you're a car guy is great, I would like to see more about the car and tech mixed videos.
I have that exact same Joyeauto module installed in my 2015 Infiniti Q50. 2yrs plus & it has been flawless! Absolutely love it.
Hi Luke, really nice car, hope that you enjoy it. It looks really much better with the wrap (seems more modern), love the stock look of both the interior and exterior - but the color makes it much younger. Enjoy it!
That’s so cool! I fully expected a new head unit but props to whoever engineered this work around. Just brilliant. I always liked having an older car that i can fully swap the head unit in so my 99 has wireless CarPlay. Scroll is a bit awkward on my cheaper head unit but its really nice for basic interactions and honestly just having maps and music. Usually get that stuff sorted before i start driving anyways! But its just such a nice convenience to have. And i can keep my phone in my pocket!
I did this same retrofit in my 958 CT. It works beautifully!
Personally I’ve always wanted to try and modernize an older car with wild ideas like this and seeing you do it makes it that much more interesting. Crazy how well it works to if I’m honest great job, doing the Apple car before official release.
Perfect way to modernize it, the whole premise of this whole thing, it transfers modern features Into an old infotainment. No need to worry about the lack of android auto and car play, or music listening
Wow, congrats on the new to you wheels! The color is awesome… I’ve been a subscriber for a while and had no clue you were a gear head, but considering you take apart computers it makes sense. I did a similar upgrade to my 2006 Volvo V50 back in 2016… It was an Android touch screen and head unit to replace the stock unit, and it was wonky, sure, but it did transform the car, especially on road trips. So kudos and great video!
Hey Luke, been watching you for a while, it’s a pleasant surprise that you are into cars let alone Porsches! I have a 718 GT4 and I love it ;) your mods are super tasteful on your 987.2
A good update for a great car, congratulations!
Good for you driving that badass ride. Def need to see more car content.
Well he’s good at what he does and helps us out with his knowledge buys and sells gear so good on him for it congratulations Luke another great video
Regarding pressing the back button to select the next track and the forward button to select the previous track, I'm sure you've already considered swapping the button caps around? Or can you swap the wires connecting them?
That would cause the same problem on the stock head unit where on CarPlay is fine but on the stock Porsche system the buttons are opposite.
@@AwesumIndustrys well but lets be real he will only use them now with apple carplay not with the stock unit so swaping these buttons would work just fine
Amazing Luke! Perfect timing - I’ve had the Joyeauto unit on order for a few weeks now for my 987.2 Boxster and this is the clearest installation video yet! As a fellow Apple enthusiast, I had no idea you were also a Porsche enthusiast! Great video.
I’m more of an interior guy myself so it totally makes sense how this transforms the experience. This was a sick video!
The yellow tint highlight is so on point 👌
Watching Luke work on Auto stuff is just as entertaining as the Apple products. (Ok it’s combining 2 of my favourite hobbies)
The exchange part sticker makes me think that the radio was replaced before in the cars history.
Anyway keep up the great content. 🤙🇦🇺
Thank you for pronouncing Porsche correctly! Greetings from Germany
I put a CarPlay unit in my 2011 Toyota Corolla and honestly, I can say the same thing about how it transformed my car. I love the integration and honestly, it made the car feel 10 years newer after.
My congratulations, Luke! You have a really great car right now.
Your videos just keep getting better and better. Thank you for being the channel to answer your fan’s crazy mac related ‘what if..?’ shower thoughts
You can’t get it much better than this
The stock look is just so cool
So awesome to see that you're a Porsche guy. I have a 2014 911 Carrera S and I just put Apple Carplay/Android Auto in my car about a month ago. Makes such a huge difference in these cars.
What are the odds, one of my fav tech youtubers dropping a vid on a car I’ve got my eye on. Porsche 987.2!
ngl im happy that Luke did a car video. Love the car man!
just stumbled onto your channel, in the middle of shopping for an older MacBook. Lo and behold you're a Porsche Cayman owner like myself... knew there was something I liked about you.. Enjoy the car, I DD everyday, even in winter..Love it.
Love the car. Especially the wrap.
the car and the upgrade is beautiful! congrats
Done the exact same thing with my M5 and completely agree with you - one of the best mods to do on a car. That doesn't even have a touch screen so you use the iDrive wheel but it works well and can use Siri if you want the screen however is excellent. Just completely modernises the car and the wireless connection is great. Bought another kit for my Frontier/Navara which does have a touch screen and can't wait to get that fitted along with many other mods I have planned for the truck.
Wow, WHAT A TITLE, what an introduction! Luke, I already loved you for a long time, but this adds another level of awesomeness. ;)
Sweet ride Luke!
I have a similar box on my 2008 Audi S6 and i agree it transforms the car, it opens a all new world of features
As a tech and auto enthusiast, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this vid. Coming from a BMW 335i, which had awful mechanical issues but a wonderfully intuitive entertainment system to a Lexus RC350, which I love every aspect of 1000% more than the Bimmer save its pretty woeful entertainment system interface (which is still terrible even in the refreshed versions of it), I'm really looking at doing something similar to my car. I know there are some dodgy replacement units that exist, but I'm waiting until I see something a little more robust before I take on that challenge. Thanks for taking the time to make this, and I'm definitely going to check out your car channel!
Downgrade in performance?
@@Cle_M3 On paper, definitely. In practice, if you consider the ability to drive a vehicle daily without issue and to not spend thousands of dollars a year on repairs and maintenance important, the Lexus is miles ahead.
@@KirkKiyosadaTome I feel ya, Lexus are definitely superior in build quality and reliability. I daily an LX470 love it to death just uses so much gas.
I did a very similar install on my 2013 Audi, and I totally understand how this changes the whole driving experience. Voice button works to bring up Siri, everything is just how it should be.
The Audi did not have a touch screen, but you can still navigate the controls using the built in selectors without issue.
Thanks for NOT missing the "E" when saying Porsche.. u nailed it Lu'
This is awesome. I looked at these when I got my 2016 Cayman. Only thing I heard was extended screws needed when keeping the xm module. Great video.
Yesss so happy you’re starting the car channel
sick ride and sick mods !! you a swaggy dude!
We just got a CarPlay head unit for our 2009 boxster s! Love that there are other people doing the same thing!
Nice music taste with The Strokes :)
Wow! I’m such a nerd for upgrades like this. Brings the car into the future. A nice quality of life update per say.
Those black rims look amazing ngl
An EPO fan! Just another reason to love this channel!
seeing my 2 fav things of cars, specifically German cars (mostly BMW and Porsche), and Apple in the same vid from Luke Miani? damn! absolutely fantastic!
981 Boxster S owner here -- Luke, this is a great upgrade. Looking into it for my car now -- THANK YOU!
These CarPlay retrofit units are the bomb. Soon as I have the funds I'm putting one in my 2006 Lexus.
As a car guy… CarPlay on a car makes a bigger difference to like a new set of wheels. Great video.
Months back Porsche came out with new modern stock head units for older Porsche including older Caymans!
I completely understand you! I'm thinking to do the same thing on my 2009 Lexus as well 😁
Luke boutta become the new Dankpods
That modular infotainment block is a blessing.
The all black was slicker looking!
Yes!!! My Luke lives in the DMV ❤ 😊
I did this with my 2002 Focus, I plan to do it again with my 2002 cougar, I love apple car play
I did this on my Lexus IS and LX. CarPlay looks amazing on a 12 inch and 10 inch display. Shoutout to all the kit makers who make this possible, and the fact the new cars don’t often have the wireless option makes it sweeter. Finally, using a physical button to swap Modes is also superior to finding the interface option.
Planning to upgrade my 2000 Porsche 911 Cabriolet 25000 miles this coming May. Great Video. Luke never disappoints...
Love this!
the strokes>>> hell yeah
I did something similar to this to my 2007 Lexus IS called the GROM VLine. It adds wireless CarPlay and android Auto while retaining the stock NAV screen since the climate controls are in there. It’s awesome having modern CarPlay in my old Lexus without having to buy a new car.
I absolutely love the VLine. I wanted to keep the stock look on my 2010 IS with CarPlay. It also brings to life the screen quality of the stock screen which is impressive for its time.
Looks like you get the bonus of up to date maps as well!
i absolutely love when tech youtubers show their car guy side
I just did this to my 2007 Opel Astra and I can confirm, just adding a touchscreen radio to an old car weirdly makes a world of difference 🙌
The touchscreen is worth more than the car 😂
Luke driving a Porsche just makes so much sense.
I am owning an E-Class from 2008 - slamming a CarPlay unit in it, was the best thing to do. But I had to change the complete head unit. I wish there where a bigger market to „upgrade“ older cars. It‘s amazing to give them new features normally only new cars have!
Beautiful!
Looks good!
This is so cool! I recently added CarPlay to my own car, a 2015 Honda Crv
My 2013 Volkswagen Beetle had a basic am fm radio and I replaced it with an OEM Volkswagen unit that works with wired Apple CarPlay. I think it’s simply amazing. It completely changed how much I enjoy the car and believe me I already loved my car from the moment I bought it.
More automotive content! As a car guy and tech guy it's the best of both worlds
So you like cool tech, cool cars and cool music. Always knew you were a goodie sir. Congrats on the awesome modded car
Nice car, awesome video.
Nice mod man that’s so cool it’s better than a new car!! Just wondering what happened to your mazda?
That's really cool, seems a bit scary involved just getting the unit out and back in
Man this is seriously cool! If this company made this for my car, I’d buy this too.
That's a lovely upgrade man! I know there was a upgrade possible by Porsche, but I bet it's way more expensive than this
I had the same year model of Cayman S, and I had also replace the stock head unit with a Panasonic head unit that support Carplay and connected to the back camera, fairly easy to just replace the whole unit, but it may lost all the fun tinkering :)
Super interesting. I was just looking into replacing my mk 6.5 Jetta head unit with a “stock” CarPlay option.
Its really nice to see the Property Brothers have a side hustle converting cars
I love to see that you are a great fan of German engineering!
I did a similar thing with my 2013 G37. A company called GROM Audio makes a setup that allows the stock head unit to have CarPlay and it’s great.
Wow this is insane! You’re one of my favorite youtuber and we have the same car!! Love this car, would love to do the upgrade!
I cant believe thats only 500 bucks. thats a ton of work making all those super complex connectors and daughter boards. amazing value for a car like that!
Yeah, baby! He has a Porsche now, my best congratulations!
I’ve got an 2004 Porsche Boxster 986 and it’s a joy to drive
Cayman S 2009. That is a SOLID choice!
This car is probably as old as some people watching this video. That's honestly crazy how well it works
IM SO GLAD YOU'RE A CAR GUY!!!!
Porsche makes a new upgrade in their "Classic" line that does exactly what you did, but it's OEM with a new screen and doesn't have the limitations of the one you got. It costs twice as much, but trade offs.
I put Apple CarPlay in my 2013 Volkswagen beetle with a very easy plug and play radio swap which is also awesome because it’s an OEM Volkswagen port and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done to my car. It completely enhanced my experience of driving and just overall using my car.
Carplay is a gamecharger, it wakes up an old car. Much better than just Bluetooth. A great upgrade for any car.
I'm very surprised to know that you are a car guy! Very nice mods you've done to your Porsche. It's a shame that my old Audi doesnt even have a color screen, otherwise I would certainly do that.
