I have a Porsche 997.1 that has been completely rebuilt to a GT3 3.8 engine. I watched your video and decided to upgrade my steering wheel. My car is a trip tonic. I purchased a PDK 991 steering wheel off a Macan 2017 I took it to my mechanic which is not a Porsche specialist to have it installed. I have spoken to another Porsche shop but they have no idea how to do this. Am I missing something
There is a lot of information pertaining to this exact thing on many of the Porsche Forums. I recommend doing your due diligence in finding specific information for your application. I do remember during the research phase of my experience , reading something about using DURAMETRIC to “turn on” certain features. I also remember reading that for certain functions to work you need a electronic adapter device. I don’t recall the exact terminology for the adapter but I’m sure you will be able to find the information you need on the P car forums. Bought a new one and installed it in my 997.1 GT3 RS. Have an airbag light on after. All plugged in correctly I did disconnect the battery and waited 1h before un plugging . I have to plug in my PIWI to find out why and resolve.
@@KRTLyfe No you can't, indeed. The battery disconnect is to avoid having residual current spring a fault code when you unplug the airbag. My problem was actual worse. When I changed my wheel the light wouldn't go out with the PIWIS and I couldn't modify the codes in the POSIP. I took out the airbag module and took it appart with a friend who is an electronics engineer. There where two resistances that had fried and had triggered a crash log (unrelated to the wheel change just coinsidence). I ordered a second hand unit, one that had a crash log, took that appart, unsoldered the memory chip from my unit for the car info, copied it into the computer and cleared the crash log, took out the memory chip from the new unit, dumped the clean info into the chip of the replacement unit and soldered it back in. Installed and cleared the codes. Light went out and it works great. And I love the new wheel as much as I hate the old one. The reaper cost me 40 euros....
@@marcducati Wow, that is awesome! Glad you sorted it out. Changing that wheel is one of the best mods you can do on the 997! It really brings the interior up to speed! How do you like it?
@@KRTLyfe love it. It is the best inside mode I’ve done. That and the shift knob. I put a dark grey cnc aluminum one. Hate the original plastic one where the cap broke off. I’m also waiting for my numeric shifter with the cables.
I had added a comment but did not see it so I am going to repeat it. I have a 2007 Porsche 997 I upgraded the steering wheel from a Porsche 2016 Macan It is 991 PDK steering wheel. My problem is that the paddle shifters will not work. My car is a triptanic and came off the other car being a trip tonic also Any advice
Bro mine is the same wheel but I have the paddle shifter pdk.. so will the new wheel I am buying with paddles automatically work on new wheel? Or module needed. To be clear it doesn’t have MF options as I don’t want them
The roads are bad, but check the rear suspension top mounts, in mine they were very worn and sounded the same. Too bad because the previous owner changed all the suspension and left the mounts.
Hi i have viewed your video with great interest and have bought a macan wheel but i am struggling in finding a matching airbag. Do you have a serial number for me?
I can only reference what I have read in forums but, from that research I would say yes. You would still need to do your own further research particular to your 997.
thanks for this video! did you have trouble with the airbag warning light and had it reprogrammed? did the horn work? did you get a new steering wheel module or was it plug and play? we have the same model thanks!
Long story short, when I was swapping the wheels out I locked the steering column by mistake. So I put the power back on to unlock it with the airbag disconnected. That triggered the Airbag warning. I used my Icarsoft to reset it myself. Literally takes a few seconds. Yes my horn works, I should’ve included footage of that. Maybe I should do a quick update video of that. Mine was plug and play because I didn’t try to activate multifunction. Hope this information helps!
Hi I'm Frank (France) I know It's far away :), well done and thanks alot for your video, I just saw this one, one question please,I have a 997.2 PDK what do I do ? keep my old air bag or get the new air bag of 991 or Caiman ? Bests regards Franck
Great Video. I can't stand the 997 steering wheels and it was literally holding me back from getting one. Flood gates open now... It's crazy how much it means to certain folks. I'm 100% with you. I change my NSX steering wheel which was quite costly but am super happy with it. I didn't even know how much it mattered to me. My 997 shouldn't be too far away and step one will be to get this wheel. Question: Think you could get the heated wheel to work??? That would be nice for a convertible which is the direction I'm headed. Best of luck, great vid. I like when a child could follow the instructions (so I can keep up....)
I suspect that if you get a 997 with multifunction it might work. I would definitely do some in-depth research to make sure it’s possible or what it takes to make it possible. I couldn’t take looking at that triangle steering wheel anymore. My friends say I’m over the top particular. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 A dream of mine is to build my own car from the ground up! 😂😂😂😂😂 I just like things to be a certain way lol. I’m glad you agree! Everyone doesn’t get it. I just watched your 5 things you love/hate about your NSX. I did a similar vid about my 997 lol so many people hate that video! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I learned somethings I didn’t know about the NSX from your video. Yep the cup holders are hilarious! The same goes for the 997 in fact I bought a special cup specifically for my 997 cup holder smh. I also agree with you on the 458! God I still love that 458 if money was no problem I would have one just to drive it into the ground! lol I would have the highest mileage 458 in the world love that car! I read somewhere that the early model NSX didn’t have power steering. Is that true did your 92 have power steering?
Oh man! Followed your lead here and got the wheel installed only to find out my harness from the 997.1 doesn't snap into the macan airbag. It looks slightly different than the one you have in your car. Did you see anything about swapping out the harness to connect it to the airbag?
No, mine was plug and play. I didn’t have to remove swap or change any wiring. Those airbag plugs are color coded and can only fit in one orientation from what I recall.
Beautiful job! Is it a heated steering wheel? You’ve inspired me with my 2007 997.1 4s with sport wheel. I wrapped mine with leather & stitched it to increase its girth, but I’ve considered this before. Now seeing it, I think I’ve been settling.
Yes it is the heated steering wheel however the heating function didn’t seem to work. I think had i installed that other electrical component it might have but I have my reservations.
Interior is so important. I'm 100% with you. The triangular Porsche steering wheels on the cayenne are hideous. If I had that car I'd probably change the steering wheel first day.
Hey great work. Do you know if the multifunction buttons will work if you had a multifunction steering wheel to begin with? I have a 997.2 with PDK and I couldn't stand the rocker switch type PDK buttons. I switched to the Sport Design steering wheel with paddles but gave up the multi function buttons. Any thoughts? Would be great to have paddles and multi function.
Louis Lin from what I have read if your car has multifunction all ready. It should work. I can’t tell you that is 100 percent true but I have done a lot of reading on this and that seems to be the case.
Hi KRT...Question about the steering wheel swap. Will a 2018 Macan steering will work with an 08 997? In terms of fitment? Can you list the parts you ordered to delete the steering wheel controls? DK from Canada
The parts list is in the description. Thanks for watching. I think it should but make sure your double and triple check. Most of them are interchangeable.

@@MrJbipes Thank you sir! It is an excellent yet easily reversible modification. The 991 steering wheel has a much better tactile feeling and aesthetic. This was my favorite modification on my 997.
Hey, awesome video. Thank you for the detail. I am about to do a similar upgrade on my 987 cayman. I was told i have to use the harness from the ugly triangle on the new wheel in order to avoid airbag warning light. The issue is the connectors from the triangle and the circle are different. Did you have any airbag light warnining light? Thank you
Sivasuss from what I read prior to doing this modification everything should be plug and play. I had to reset my airbag light because I turned my car on with out the air bag being connected. If you don’t do that you shouldn’t get an airbag light. If you do, you can easily reset it with Icarsoft.

@@KRTLyfe np, thanks!

so stupid! what you didnt show: what happened after 20:17 ? so you need one week to solve all problems with the new airbag. what happened after you reconnect the batterie? and how can you post this video? and how can you handle a airbag without protection( and show it!!!!)? if you touch the contact with bare hands it blows because of your bodyelectricity.
Yup its exactly the same. 👍
Great video! Makes a huge difference to the cabin
We agree! Thank you for watching.
Whats the difference in diameter of the old vs new, thanks
It is almost 1to 1 the main difference is the new wheel is much thicker and has a superior tactile feel and feed back.
Hi K, I want to do the same thing to my 987 Boxter. Quick question, do I need a new airbag or we can use the existing airbag for the new wheel? Thanks
Based on my research you need the airbag to match the wheel.
Bought a new one and installed it in my 997.1 GT3 RS. Have an airbag light on after. All plugged in correctly I did disconnect the battery and waited 1h before un plugging . I have to plug in my PIWI to find out why and resolve.
You cant reset an Airbag light by disconnecting the battery. You have to use a P car specific reader.
Nice done, do you have the oem part nr from the left and right-side plastic insert for the replacement of the multi-functional bottoms. Thanks.
I think I put them in the description.
hi, i did a similar swap with a steering swap, were you able to get the horn to work?
Yep my horn worked just fine. I even showed it working in the follow up video I made.
Awesome Video very detailed
awesome will look up my next steering wheel for my 997.1. thanksss!!!!
997 sports design steering wheel I think suits the car better don't you think?
I’m not sure which version you are referring to but I love the one I installed.
I had added a comment but did not see it so I am going to repeat it. I have a 2007 Porsche 997 I upgraded the steering wheel from a Porsche 2016 Macan It is 991 PDK steering wheel. My problem is that the paddle shifters will not work. My car is a triptanic and came off the other car being a trip tonic also
Any advice
Hello, I responded to your previous post. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing! Best of luck sorting it out! I’m sure you can do it!
Great video.thank you for showing which tools needed
You are welcome!
Wow that looks 100x better
Best 997 mod ever IMHO
Hey! Nice work there! Is it possible to retrofit the heating feature to a non-heated 997.1?
Thank you and I totally agree, will be doing the same.
No problem, it one of the best mods you can do. I doubt you will regret it!
great video, would you happen to have part numbers of the front covers, I just ordered pair and they sent me rear ones, I would really appreciate it
volvoproject www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU718SWT.html
Bro mine is the same wheel but I have the paddle shifter pdk.. so will the new wheel I am buying with paddles automatically work on new wheel? Or module needed.
To be clear it doesn’t have MF options as I don’t want them
How is it holding up 4yrs later ?
Great, I sold the car but I still keep in touch with the current owner and he is loving it!
To hide the flappy holes you could've used black mesh to give you a look into the steering wheel components.
That is true but, there really isn’t much to see to be honest.
The roads are bad, but check the rear suspension top mounts, in mine they were very worn and sounded the same. Too bad because the previous owner changed all the suspension and left the mounts.
The first thing I did to my 997 was change the mounts. I made a vlog about it. Thanks
Awesome job. I want to do the same for my 997 Carrera S but I have the saddle interior so I'm worried about how a carbon wheel would look
Yeah IDK there are other options you could try but for me the 991 wheel was the best.
Hey KRT! do you have a link where to buy this non multifunctional trim left and right? I would be soo appreciate❤️

You have to get a left and right side just FYI, thank youI for watching, commenting and subscribing!
@@KRTLyfe Thank you! Just got my new steering wheel damn will look good on my 987 boxster! Inspired by you! Thank you very much
I have a 997.2 pdk, will the 991.2 steering wheel work?
I believe it should, but please do all your research.
Hi i have viewed your video with great interest and have bought a macan wheel but i am struggling in finding a matching airbag. Do you have a serial number for me?
I wish I did, I think you might be able to find the bag on suncoast or eBay.
Do you know if the paddles would work on tiptronic?
I can only reference what I have read in forums but, from that research I would say yes. You would still need to do your own further research particular to your 997.
Bottom button for Macan is steering wheel heater.
thanks for this video! did you have trouble with the airbag warning light and had it reprogrammed? did the horn work? did you get a new steering wheel module or was it plug and play? we have the same model thanks!
Where are the sunglasses from ? Please answer
They are reps of the Oakley Sutro.
Wow that was a quick reply, didn't expect it ! Cheers man thanks alot !

Does the heated steering wheel button work now? Or does that need programming to work
Hi I'm Frank (France) I know It's far away :), well done and thanks alot for your video, I just saw this one, one question please,I have a 997.2 PDK what do I do ? keep my old air bag or get the new air bag of 991 or Caiman ? Bests regards Franck
Sorry for the delayed response, you definitely need the airbag to match the steering wheel.
A dream of mine is to build my own car from the ground up! 😂😂😂😂😂
I just like things to be a certain way lol.
@@KRTLyfe: Being particular is under rated.
@@KRTLyfe j/c what cup did u buy for your 997 cup holders? my giant hydroflask doesnt fit 😢
This steering wheel works olso on porsche cayenne 2012?
I’m not 100 percent sure but I think it should.
Is the diameter of the macan wheel larger?
I wouldn't have noticed the soda can hole fix if you hadn't mentioned it.
Thank you, I think that little hack came out pretty decent.
Interior is so important. I'm 100% with you. The triangular Porsche steering wheels on the cayenne are hideous. If I had that car I'd probably change the steering wheel first day.
Yes! It has been bothering me for a long time but not anymore lol. Thanks for watching.
That button was for the heater👍🏾
Correct.
Hey I was gonna buy 2014 turbo s and want to do a mod like yours u know the paddle shift will work?
It should if the vehicle is optioned out with it.
Shoul we disconnect only the negative battery pole or both?
Michel Martineau only the negative connection.
Where you find 991 stearing wheel and how much can i find like this or 997.2 ( its really above 2.5k dollar with air bag)
Thank you for watching, I give all the information in the video.
I have a 997.2 and no the multi function doesn’t work
@@luke4193 have you tried Durametric or Icarsoft? You might only need to turn it on.
Most of them are interchangeable.
why did you leave the box in at the end? lol
Great video. Much appreciated!
No, problem glad you like it!
Love it, it should fit on a cayman 07 since I have the same old steering wheel you use to have.
It should fit, thanks for watching.

U think this would work on an 05 cayenne?
That is a great question. I am not 100 percent sure I would say figure out how to pull the Cayenne steering wheel off and see if it is similar.
It will work, I’m doing it with my 08 Cayenne GTS
very nice video. I am curious if the heated function of the new steering wheel works on your 997?
No, that would’ve been awesome tho! It might have if I would’ve tried using the multifunction.
Greatt video mann !! Thanks for making it in soo much detail..but what about the honk ?? Is it working?
Thank you. Yes the horn works fine.
Where did you get the Macan wheel? eBay range is $1K or more
As I stated in the beginning of the Video. I found mine for sale on FaceBook Market Place. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing. We sincerely appreciate the support.
@@KRTLyfe I didn't catch that. Great write-up. I'm intrigued. 2005 Boxster
@@KRTLyfe awesome thanks. Someone on facebook said i can use the harness but need to get the module. If not, the airbag and the horn work properly. Did you have to replace any module? Thanks.
Wow what a great mod! I have a 996, do you know if this steering would fit ?
I don’t think it will fit a 996, if I still had a 996 I think I would go with a retro looking wheel.
Are the steps pretty much the same for the tip tropic wheel?
Yes.
the button was for heated steering wheel
Yes, you are correct.
It looks perfect. I have a 997 4s, this would make a nice change
Thanks! And thank you for watching.
