Theres still a way to do that. The add-on that makes everyone hear the non-directional phase will allow you to do that in a weird way. Basically if you start your phase outside of 24 meters of the survivor, even when getting close they won't get directional audio, so with that add-on it still works.
Fun fact: this wasn't mentioned in the video but The Spirit didn't have a vaulting animation. If you were playing Spirit you would see it but survivors would not be able to see it! The devs had to add it in a patch
I think the Spirit's history is a testament how inital response to a release in any pvp game should never be jumped at so soon. Better speed, duration, and cooldown, thats all she needed from the ptb to be a strong killer...but removing the directional audio caused her to run ramptent in the game. But also its funny to learn about the "look at the shards" bit.
I mean, that's still the case - look at recent 3 killers, all got buffs almost instantly after release, which ended with them getting so high pressure that all 3 can now (more or less) easily hold a 3 gen.
one thing that i remember from her ptb as well: that vaccuum-sounding audio WHILE phasing as spirit was like 3-4x louder than what it is currently so it was really fucking hard to track during it. there was a lot more guesswork involved rather than hearing an injured survivor and popping right in front of them

I miss them a little too, even if I virtually never got gen-grabbed because I always played hyper-aware against spirits during that era. frankly the most fun era of dbd even if it was leaning into imbalance on both sides..

If you ever wondered where did all the Stridor Spirit players go after Spirit nerfs, they moved to Blight. Because the kind of players that used Stridor Spirit were sweatlords that go the path of least resistance. I remember going against Stridor Spirit almost every single day back in the days, it was so infuriating and disconnections were rampant. I haven't seen a single Spirit in months now because hardly anyone plays her anymore. Without her current overpowered addons she's kinda clunky to play.
I hate that every time I go against a spirit it’s MDR because she’s my fav killer and my main. She’s still incredibly good and learning the phasing 50/50s and sound queues is a lot of fun. It feels like MDR players never put in the time to actually learn her
She definitely needs a buff. Since Wesker and the knight released they haven't been nerfed which they need to be nerfed ASAP. If there are still op killers in the game then the spirit should also be op. It's not fair to be a weaker killer when she has potential to be the best in the game. BUFF THE SPIRIT!! 😊
After 3 years of her mains mastering her and still having better phase duration and cooldown it's only natural she is way better than PTB even with the directional audio
yeah i feel like she was never bad even on her first ptb it's just that she was new and nobody had mastered her yet. while her first ptb version was unquestionably her weakest iteration it wasn't that much weaker compared to her current version besides a few add on and cooldown changes cause of course you could make almost any killer stronger if you just make cooldowns and movements speeds a little faster
tbh the spirit is one of my fave killers to play against. she gets that single braincell going instead of mindlessly looping the same tile knowing when youre going to drop that pallet
how could you not talk about the most iconic bs spirit mechanic of them all? the phase vaulting animation or rather the lack there of. that shit was cracked.
How? Just run in the opposite direction when she looks through a window, like always. It doesn't matter if she goes through or not, she's either on the other side of a wall or stuck in an animation, just BOLT like you would do against any other killer
Thinking of how long spirit stayed untouched reminds me of another killer that is having this same arc, just in a different way. When will the boiling point for blight addons come? Time will tell. I do hope soon though. Blight would be in a great spot balance wise if they just took sometime not to ignore him.
9:04 how that spirit didn't get stunned amazes me because if i play killer and ACTIVELY put distance between me and a pallet when i walk past it and I'm not even going through, i STILL get hit by the very edge of the pallet somehow and have to sit through the stun animation watching the pallet sit there from a distance where I'm not even touching it even after it was pulled down. . . this is BLASPHEMY
12:15 yeah the hair did that strange effect, but once again there was a cosmetic (i think the school one) that completely cancel this counterplay. The animation thing was that every time she used her power the animation loop used to start from the beginning. That was so difficult to notice but it was true. Oh and now she is not trash because in the ptb the first person phase sound was very loud, so no one could hear even Jeff moans
you forgot to mention, that she had a different vaulting animation (or basically no vaulting animation), where you could not tell if she vaulted the window or just stayed in front of it
i remember feeling like i got so much value out of the hair glitch because it felt good to finally be able to see some indication of wtf the player was doing, and tbf in a lot of situations where the spirit starts phasing you might not actually be at a loop so it did help with the split second reaction time of knowing the nanosecond she starts phasing and being able to start walking / reversing / making a game plan rather than it taking a few hundred milliseconds or longer to react to the beginning of a phase
I remember the build that made her undeniably stronger than nurse: Mother-Daughter Ring (Tremendously increased movement speed, the spirit could no longer see scratch marks) Prayer Beads (No phasing sound effect ever) Hex: Thrill of the Hunt (Cleansing a hex would take longer for each totem on the map. Starting to cleanse a totem would notify the killer) Hex: Ruin (Skillchecks would be red and good skillchecks regressed the gen by 5%, and great skillchecks did not progress the generator at all) Hex: Haunted Grounds (same as today) Hex: Devour Hope (Same as today mostly) So you’d move at the speed of light, survivors would never be able to tell where you were phasing from, you see totem getting touched, you phase there and grab them off, bumping into them to confirm their exact location. If they didn’t want to do totems, gens were affected by the harshest version of ruin, and you could get grabbed just as easily as the totems (remember, the spirit can phase to the gen, and “bump” each side to find where survivors were, meanwhile they had NO idea you were phasing right on them) Cleanse one totem, took you like 40 seconds, 40% chance it’s haunted, 20% it’s devour which might not matter since ruin was doing more immediate work, or thrill of the hunt which would be ideal, but not enough to stop this. I went against this several times back in 2019, and I genuinely don’t think a single game got more than 1 gen done ever All that said, you could STILL just be playing her normally in chase, it’s not limiting yourself to just grabs, it just added that incredibly strong play style on top of her already unfair base play styles You also forgot to mention when the spirit had no vault animation, meaning people could fake vaults and it was just another “guessing 50/50 mindgame”. You also forgot about the add on reworks, such as speed addons giving less, duration addons doing less (but still giving recovery speed to this day which is a bit of an issue), and of course prayer beads being reworked entirely. As you can tell, this shit was lifelong trauma lmao

I will mention that when you stopped sprinting you still had a few seconds before your survivor would stop panting as they “recovered” and any spirit with decent headphones could hear that as you were walking and pop out to hit you
Great video! I personally had a way to"counter standing still strategy. It involves looking at her animations, because every time that spirit entered phase walk, there was a smooth transition to 1st frame of her idle animation, but still even with that knowledge it was 50/50.(and spirits animation didn't change, although it was funny to hear)
i remember queueing up as survivor and in the moment you heard the phase sound your teammates would disconnect, because facing the spirit was so frustrating
well you see that was the part he mentioned as people had enough, 2021 people where boicotting it so eather they disconnect on start or crawl around the map in urban evasion to hold the spirit hostage so she cant ruin another game. leading to only thing she was good for was rank climbing. + even today she is broken, just increase volume to 100% and you have no downsides, but your ears are gone so not many do it. +we have equally strong killers that are easier and way more fun( chuky, oni, plague, alien,).
The hair thing that you mentioned I have seen in other games. It basically happens cause the character that is moving(in this case the actual killer) is still somewhat attached to what it left behind(its husk). Because of this the moment the spirit takes off invisibly the husks hair moves as if it was trying to move simply cause the killer just moved. I see this a lot in believe it or not a game some of you may know called vrchat, where some characters can do exactly this same thing, turn invisible / leave behind a clone / and reappear somewhere else. But yes like you mention this wouldn't really help you know from which way she is coming just that she is coming.
My favorite thing about the history of Spirit is when I realized that the devs change anything I try to use, I intentionally got Spirit because I hated going against her and a month later she is in the state she is in now
I'm glad I didn't play when old prayer beads were a thing, but I think even new prayer beads are still good. I remember there was a play people used to do where they'd start phasing just inside the terror radius, so most survivors didn't notice, and then they'd get grabs. It's sad that the spirit nerf took so long though, maybe if it had happened earlier I wouldn't have quit the game, but as it happens, it didn't, so I've never really got to experience the benefits of the change.
I feel like you missed some key changes that happened to spirit such as removal of phasing collision with survivors The addon repass which changed prayer beads The removal of window 50/50s since spirit had no animation for vaulting
I remember hwo one guy linked me a video of a content creator "Proving" that Spirit is actually pretty easy to counter. Said content creator pre droppped like 10 pallets and used dead hard so the chase lasted for around 60 seconds. In that moment I realized that DBD's playerbase can easily show you how stupid people are.
The real counter to the 50/50 at pallets was running spine chill. If the spirit started to phase and loop around to your side, they'd almost always stop looking at you for a split second while turning a corner which acted as an indicator to know she was coming onto your side. It turned the 50/50 into an 80/20 in your favor.
I'm gonna be honest and say I hope they add another killer like spirit with a counterplay like "look at the shards". A killer where counterplay is found in the lore. I remember waiting for her animation to reset before they nerfed the phase audio. I almost miss messing with spirits thinking I didn't know.
I remember people defending spirits "counterplay" back in her strongest state. Yeah so uhh.. basically I threw the pallet and she was there.. next time I threw the pallet and she was behind me and I got hit.. literally just playing russian roulette at every loop that wasn't a god pallet. Don't even get me started on prayer beads, oh lord
Killer main and whenever I play as a survivor vs Spirit I still cannot tell at all which direction she is coming from. I know it must be a "skill issue" but idk how you survivor mains can tell. I still feel like she has no positional based audio whatsoever.
One thing I swear on for the Spirit's PTB was that her base power "charging" was longer too. I think it took like 2.5 to 3 seconds to start phasing compared to the 1.5 seconds afterward. Also she didn't have a vault animation for a long time. She did have one on her end, but survivor's just saw her standing there doing nothing until she suddenly popped out on the other side, lending even more to the "mindgame by doing nothing" playstyle ppl hated. Another thing not mentioned was that they were also considering adding a visual dust cloud along with the directional phasing sound, but they decided against that after player feedback.
I started playing dbd back in 2019 when the spirit hate was at its peak. She was my first killer, I picked her up because I just liked her design the most. I didn’t even know she was OP, but I got humbled by upset survivors. I eventually stopped playing her because of her reputation though.
You let the Entitled Brats Be the deciding factor on dropping Spirit? Shame on you, Dude. Survivors get mad no matter who you play or what you do. You didn't get "Humbled," you got walked on like a Doormat.
As a spirit main, the nerf wasn't really noticeable. Yes, survivors got better at reading the direction of the audio, but thanks to playing mindgames in the phasing form, it was easy to cross counter their strategy and push them into dead zones. PTB spirit was god awful and horribly underpowered but just like every killer i got good with I just kept playing and adapting.
@Kolba Yada Surprisingly, she's still rare :( I haven't seen a single spirit for that last couple months but that won't stop me from being best girl on someone's servers!
I think the shard theory came because of how Spirit's animation kinda broke when starting a phase, which caused those shards to be a lot more visible than normal and can be mistaked to have started glowing.
I don't get directional audio from Spirit. I used to be able to, but lately it seems it was removed or something because I am still using the same equipment but theres just no directional audio, its just regular noise, don't know if anyone else is having that issue.
you forgot to mention that upon release in the PTB, there was a bug that made blood bright red during phasing (like that one perk) and people thought that was intended. it was then later revealed that it was a bug, fixed it, and that was when she was at her weakest.
Post-PTB / Live release Spirit, before her nerfs, was the most OP killer in DBD history imo. I know it's unpopular, but at least Nurse takes skill and some exhaustion perks can give you some distance if used at a good time by a Survivor. Old Spirit was just entirely BS.
I main Spirit now (picked her up 2021) and I love her. I learned a few things from this video though! I never heard about the phony shards counterplay, but I'd laugh that shit off like, no? She doesn't have those shards in every cosmetic, and when she does, they reflect light like normal glass. I think she's in the best position she's been in for years, judging by everything I've heard. The Prayer Beads became the Furin, and the biggest issue most people have with her now is the Mother-Daughter/Cherry Blossom combo. She definitely has one of the strongest add-on kits in the game next to Blight.
I'm completely garbage with spirit😂😂 I swear even with stridor, sloppy and even predator, I struggle tracking survivors lol. She and Skull merchant are the only characters that i don't use at all. I'd say, after the nerfs, now she's a little more bearable in terms of counterplay, (but most of her add-ons are really busted)
Maps had infinites, better pallet spawns, and breakable walls weren't a thing during her release. She wasn't 'good' because everything else was better than her at the time. Combine that with the fact that people probably didn't want to learn her because she couldn't see Survivors during her phase when they could just do 3+ Blink nurse. I think we've come a long way with unique perk builds that synergizes better with specific killers and allowed Spirit to become stronger despite her buffs. The biggest problem with Spirit is the recharge speed on her power. She's SO mobile and fast with movement/duration add-ons that she doesn't even need faster recharge. She's still a top 5 Killer. Edit: The directional audio is still super buggy lol. I swear it doesn't work properly unless you pay $500 for a headset.
Why can we have it for both sides why can't we have a 2016-17 meta build with survivors to go up against strong killers but if it's a weak killer we should go back to 2023 build if weak killers are use why can't we do that..that way we can match them we can keep up with them but I see that the community doesn't think about stuff like that so it's whatever
I'm not a super competitive player or anything but Spirit might be my favorite killer. Her design, her power, her lore I'm just super into all of it. Playing against her is definitely insanely hard but I can't help but be excited to see her.
I was playing during the sprits ptb alot of the “she is weak” was the same thing every ptb people don’t understand the power so they say “this killer sucks” it was 50% that and she needed slight buffs that was it. Back then the devs just listened to the loudest side of the community complaining and would make huge changes before giving players time to learn counter play or how to use the new killer. The devs just didn’t change her then one tiny small counter play was you could hear her footsteps. Then they magically got patched out so you couldn’t hear them anymore. One of the big problems with spirit is at unsafe/ semi safe pallets sure you can hear her in phase but she is so fast in phase she just has to wait to hear you commit to a side of the vault even with resilience you can’t make it back over the pallet before she hits you.
Great video, but one point of criticism I have is that the Nurse is not very hard to be good at. She has a high skill ceiling but saying this, I think, is an issue, because that makes BHVR want to nerf her less.
what if the spirit went into phase walkin' and you saw blue scratch marks on the floor she is moving upon as a survivor the same way a kiler sees red scratch marks from survivors?
The reason why she was so OP on release is because BHVR are greedy fucks that hope people will buy the DLC exactly because she's so OP, even knowing she'll get nerfed at some point.
I began playing DBD in february 2021. I fell in-love with he game but you have no idea how many times I wanted to quit as soon as I saw Spirit. I've never hated a killer this much like her. Literally unplayable and unfair. Till this day I struggle with her and Iron Will was my only chance against her, but that is in the bin as well.
You forgot that she has a bug going on where if you use Duration increasing addons it INCREASES HER RECHARGE RATE the same same as if she had a recharge addon.
Sprirt reminded me of the Assassins from Blade and soul back in the day. They have the ability to turn invisible and once that happen, you can't attack them at all. I can see the wobble effects and seeing where they are going, but I cannot attack them.
You forgot one valid counterplay to Spirit: you disconnect whenever you see her or kill yourself at first hook hoping that next match will be not against Spirit. Here, done.
I still cannot believe people genuinely thought the glass shards glowing was real! When i asked someone, okay what about the skins without the shards, they told me theres always something that glows on the skin you just have to learn what each one is

The only simple solution dealing with a spirit is when she goes anywhere mode start running in circles around a rock it'll confuse her sound audio and make it sound like you're farther away making her swing early.... I remember the past year and a half It's just been spirits and then it just stopped probably cuz now they can't play easy mode and have to actually earn with skill their wins
If you're only counterplays to look at something there's a problem Good God no wonder spirits always win cuz there's no challenge to using her learn the basic gameplay then up developers leave her alone for years Oh blight still winning regardless in soloQ and against squads and I'll leave them alone- BEHAVIOR😂
Spirit has always been one of my favorite survivors to vs. Maybe it's because I've mained her ever since I started playing the game but it feels good to outplay her

This is probably the first one of this series that I disagree with. Spirit brought her own mind games to the table without negating a lot of the ones that apply to other killers. It was extremely easy for a Spirit player to mind game themselves into extending chases. She never was as powerful as you make her out to be in the hands of average players. One thing you didn't mention is that sound when she goes into the spirit form _constantly_ broke. Without the sounds of the survivors, even with the movement and invisibility, she is a bad killer because she relies on that sound so heavily. There were several months in a row where the sound was so scuffed that she was unplayable and you never saw her, and never saw content creators playing her. Another thing that should be mentioned, is that her spirit form disturbs grass. For someone who was playing at medium graphic settings, paying attention to the grass was a tell that the Spirit was coming. Too bad that most survivors turned their graphics as low as they could to reduce the grass to counter Trapper. Honestly, this video just feels very biased. Was she over buffed from PTB? Absolutely. But she never was better then nurse, and there was counterplay to her. TBH I'm a bit shocked about your stance on her, since you _are_ a good player. A damn good player, one of the best at this game yet banging on about her as though she surpassed Nurse in anything. We never saw her replace the Nurse in tournaments. We never had the DCing waves that Nurse had. She was always near the top of a tier list, sometimes months locked in at #1 behind Nurse, but she always had the asterisk of 'if the sound worked'.
I remember being in matches against the original Spirit when she was very first released. It was absolute hell, and most people would just immediately DC.

I haven't seen a single Spirit in months now because hardly anyone plays her anymore. Without her current overpowered addons she's kinda clunky to play.
I hate that every time I go against a spirit it’s MDR because she’s my fav killer and my main. She’s still incredibly good and learning the phasing 50/50s and sound queues is a lot of fun. It feels like MDR players never put in the time to actually learn her

She definitely needs a buff. Since Wesker and the knight released they haven't been nerfed which they need to be nerfed ASAP. If there are still op killers in the game then the spirit should also be op. It's not fair to be a weaker killer when she has potential to be the best in the game. BUFF THE SPIRIT!! 😊
After 3 years of her mains mastering her and still having better phase duration and cooldown it's only natural she is way better than PTB even with the directional audio
yeah i feel like she was never bad even on her first ptb it's just that she was new and nobody had mastered her yet. while her first ptb version was unquestionably her weakest iteration it wasn't that much weaker compared to her current version besides a few add on and cooldown changes cause of course you could make almost any killer stronger if you just make cooldowns and movements speeds a little faster
tbh the spirit is one of my fave killers to play against. she gets that single braincell going instead of mindlessly looping the same tile knowing when youre going to drop that pallet
The killer design is terrible and against a good spirit there is pretty much no counter play. Chases are usually very unfun to play

How? Just run in the opposite direction when she looks through a window, like always.

12:15 yeah the hair did that strange effect, but once again there was a cosmetic (i think the school one) that completely cancel this counterplay. The animation thing was that every time she used her power the animation loop used to start from the beginning. That was so difficult to notice but it was true.
Oh and now she is not trash because in the ptb the first person phase sound was very loud, so no one could hear even Jeff moans
you forgot to mention, that she had a different vaulting animation (or basically no vaulting animation), where you could not tell if she vaulted the window or just stayed in front of it
i remember feeling like i got so much value out of the hair glitch because it felt good to finally be able to see some indication of wtf the player was doing, and tbf in a lot of situations where the spirit starts phasing you might not actually be at a loop so it did help with the split second reaction time of knowing the nanosecond she starts phasing and being able to start walking / reversing / making a game plan rather than it taking a few hundred milliseconds or longer to react to the beginning of a phase

I remember the build that made her undeniably stronger than nurse:
Mother-Daughter Ring (Tremendously increased movement speed, the spirit could no longer see scratch marks)
Prayer Beads (No phasing sound effect ever)
Hex: Thrill of the Hunt (Cleansing a hex would take longer for each totem on the map. Starting to cleanse a totem would notify the killer)
Hex: Ruin (Skillchecks would be red and good skillchecks regressed the gen by 5%, and great skillchecks did not progress the generator at all)
Hex: Haunted Grounds (same as today)
Hex: Devour Hope (Same as today mostly)
So you’d move at the speed of light, survivors would never be able to tell where you were phasing from, you see totem getting touched, you phase there and grab them off, bumping into them to confirm their exact location. If they didn’t want to do totems, gens were affected by the harshest version of ruin, and you could get grabbed just as easily as the totems (remember, the spirit can phase to the gen, and “bump” each side to find where survivors were, meanwhile they had NO idea you were phasing right on them)
Cleanse one totem, took you like 40 seconds, 40% chance it’s haunted, 20% it’s devour which might not matter since ruin was doing more immediate work, or thrill of the hunt which would be ideal, but not enough to stop this. I went against this several times back in 2019, and I genuinely don’t think a single game got more than 1 gen done ever
All that said, you could STILL just be playing her normally in chase, it’s not limiting yourself to just grabs, it just added that incredibly strong play style on top of her already unfair base play styles
You also forgot to mention when the spirit had no vault animation, meaning people could fake vaults and it was just another “guessing 50/50 mindgame”. You also forgot about the add on reworks, such as speed addons giving less, duration addons doing less (but still giving recovery speed to this day which is a bit of an issue), and of course prayer beads being reworked entirely.

I will mention that when you stopped sprinting you still had a few seconds before your survivor would stop panting as they “recovered” and any spirit with decent headphones could hear that as you were walking and pop out to hit you

Great video! I personally had a way to"counter standing still strategy. It involves looking at her animations, because every time that spirit entered phase walk, there was a smooth transition to 1st frame of her idle animation, but still even with that knowledge it was 50/50.(and spirits animation didn't change, although it was funny to hear)
i remember queueing up as survivor and in the moment you heard the phase sound your teammates would disconnect, because facing the spirit was so frustrating
well you see that was the part he mentioned as people had enough, 2021 people where boicotting it so eather they disconnect on start or crawl around the map in urban evasion to hold the spirit hostage so she cant ruin another game. leading to only thing she was good for was rank climbing. + even today she is broken, just increase volume to 100% and you have no downsides, but your ears are gone so not many do it. +we have equally strong killers that are easier and way more fun( chuky, oni, plague, alien,).
The hair thing that you mentioned I have seen in other games. It basically happens cause the character that is moving(in this case the actual killer) is still somewhat attached to what it left behind(its husk). Because of this the moment the spirit takes off invisibly the husks hair moves as if it was trying to move simply cause the killer just moved. I see this a lot in believe it or not a game some of you may know called vrchat, where some characters can do exactly this same thing, turn invisible / leave behind a clone / and reappear somewhere else. But yes like you mention this wouldn't really help you know from which way she is coming just that she is coming.

My favorite thing about the history of Spirit is when I realized that the devs change anything I try to use, I intentionally got Spirit because I hated going against her and a month later she is in the state she is in now
I'm glad I didn't play when old prayer beads were a thing, but I think even new prayer beads are still good. I remember there was a play people used to do where they'd start phasing just inside the terror radius, so most survivors didn't notice, and then they'd get grabs. It's sad that the spirit nerf took so long though, maybe if it had happened earlier I wouldn't have quit the game, but as it happens, it didn't, so I've never really got to experience the benefits of the change.

Aside her broken-ness, old Spirit back in the days actually scared me a lot. Sometimes I miss DBD being scary for once.
I remember hwo one guy linked me a video of a content creator "Proving" that Spirit is actually pretty easy to counter. Said content creator pre droppped like 10 pallets and used dead hard so the chase lasted for around 60 seconds. In that moment I realized that DBD's playerbase can easily show you how stupid people are.
The real counter to the 50/50 at pallets was running spine chill. If the spirit started to phase and loop around to your side, they'd almost always stop looking at you for a split second while turning a corner which acted as an indicator to know she was coming onto your side. It turned the 50/50 into an 80/20 in your favor.
I'm gonna be honest and say I hope they add another killer like spirit with a counterplay like "look at the shards". A killer where counterplay is found in the lore. I remember waiting for her animation to reset before they nerfed the phase audio. I almost miss messing with spirits thinking I didn't know.
I remember people defending spirits "counterplay" back in her strongest state. Yeah so uhh.. basically I threw the pallet and she was there.. next time I threw the pallet and she was behind me and I got hit.. literally just playing russian roulette at every loop that wasn't a god pallet. Don't even get me started on prayer beads, oh lord
Killer main and whenever I play as a survivor vs Spirit I still cannot tell at all which direction she is coming from. I know it must be a "skill issue" but idk how you survivor mains can tell. I still feel like she has no positional based audio whatsoever.

One thing I swear on for the Spirit's PTB was that her base power "charging" was longer too. I think it took like 2.5 to 3 seconds to start phasing compared to the 1.5 seconds afterward.
Also she didn't have a vault animation for a long time. She did have one on her end, but survivor's just saw her standing there doing nothing until she suddenly popped out on the other side, lending even more to the "mindgame by doing nothing" playstyle ppl hated.
Another thing not mentioned was that they were also considering adding a visual dust cloud along with the directional phasing sound, but they decided against that after player feedback.
I started playing dbd back in 2019 when the spirit hate was at its peak. She was my first killer, I picked her up because I just liked her design the most. I didn’t even know she was OP, but I got humbled by upset survivors. I eventually stopped playing her because of her reputation though.

As a spirit main, the nerf wasn't really noticeable. Yes, survivors got better at reading the direction of the audio, but thanks to playing mindgames in the phasing form, it was easy to cross counter their strategy and push them into dead zones. PTB spirit was god awful and horribly underpowered but just like every killer i got good with I just kept playing and adapting.
It was noticible for like 90% of spirit players tho lmao. She became so rare for a while that you'd see hag more often than her.
I feel the BIG nerf was getting rid of her really good addons like damn I miss her old green addons 😢

I think the shard theory came because of how Spirit's animation kinda broke when starting a phase, which caused those shards to be a lot more visible than normal and can be mistaked to have started glowing.
I don't get directional audio from Spirit. I used to be able to, but lately it seems it was removed or something because I am still using the same equipment but theres just no directional audio, its just regular noise, don't know if anyone else is having that issue.

you forgot to mention that upon release in the PTB, there was a bug that made blood bright red during phasing (like that one perk) and people thought that was intended. it was then later revealed that it was a bug, fixed it, and that was when she was at her weakest.

I know it's unpopular, but at least Nurse takes skill and some exhaustion perks can give you some distance if used at a good time by a Survivor.

I main Spirit now (picked her up 2021) and I love her. I learned a few things from this video though! I never heard about the phony shards counterplay, but I'd laugh that shit off like, no? She doesn't have those shards in every cosmetic, and when she does, they reflect light like normal glass.
I think she's in the best position she's been in for years, judging by everything I've heard. The Prayer Beads became the Furin, and the biggest issue most people have with her now is the Mother-Daughter/Cherry Blossom combo. She definitely has one of the strongest add-on kits in the game next to Blight.

Imo it depends on the headset you have. Because she's very audio dependant. Especially with Mother Daughter Ring
Switch out Stridor for Bloodhound. Bloodhound + Sloppy Butcher is great for tracking Survivors

Maps had infinites, better pallet spawns, and breakable walls weren't a thing during her release. She wasn't 'good' because everything else was better than her at the time. Combine that with the fact that people probably didn't want to learn her because she couldn't see Survivors during her phase when they could just do 3+ Blink nurse.
I think we've come a long way with unique perk builds that synergizes better with specific killers and allowed Spirit to become stronger despite her buffs. The biggest problem with Spirit is the recharge speed on her power. She's SO mobile and fast with movement/duration add-ons that she doesn't even need faster recharge. She's still a top 5 Killer.
Edit: The directional audio is still super buggy lol. I swear it doesn't work properly unless you pay $500 for a headset.

I'm not a super competitive player or anything but Spirit might be my favorite killer. Her design, her power, her lore I'm just super into all of it. Playing against her is definitely insanely hard but I can't help but be excited to see her.
I was playing during the sprits ptb alot of the “she is weak” was the same thing every ptb people don’t understand the power so they say “this killer sucks” it was 50% that and she needed slight buffs that was it. Back then the devs just listened to the loudest side of the community complaining and would make huge changes before giving players time to learn counter play or how to use the new killer. The devs just didn’t change her then one tiny small counter play was you could hear her footsteps. Then they magically got patched out so you couldn’t hear them anymore.
One of the big problems with spirit is at unsafe/ semi safe pallets sure you can hear her in phase but she is so fast in phase she just has to wait to hear you commit to a side of the vault even with resilience you can’t make it back over the pallet before she hits you.
Great video, but one point of criticism I have is that the Nurse is not very hard to be good at. She has a high skill ceiling but saying this, I think, is an issue, because that makes BHVR want to nerf her less.

I began playing DBD in february 2021. I fell in-love with he game but you have no idea how many times I wanted to quit as soon as I saw Spirit. I've never hated a killer this much like her. Literally unplayable and unfair. Till this day I struggle with her and Iron Will was my only chance against her, but that is in the bin as well.
You forgot that she has a bug going on where if you use Duration increasing addons it INCREASES HER RECHARGE RATE the same same as if she had a recharge addon.
Sprirt reminded me of the Assassins from Blade and soul back in the day. They have the ability to turn invisible and once that happen, you can't attack them at all. I can see the wobble effects and seeing where they are going, but I cannot attack them.
You forgot one valid counterplay to Spirit: you disconnect whenever you see her or kill yourself at first hook hoping that next match will be not against Spirit. Here, done.

I still cannot believe people genuinely thought the glass shards glowing was real! When i asked someone, okay what about the skins without the shards, they told me theres always something that glows on the skin you just have to learn what each one is

The only simple solution dealing with a spirit is when she goes anywhere mode start running in circles around a rock it'll confuse her sound audio and make it sound like you're farther away making her swing early.... I remember the past year and a half It's just been spirits and then it just stopped probably cuz now they can't play easy mode and have to actually earn with skill their wins

This is probably the first one of this series that I disagree with.
Spirit brought her own mind games to the table without negating a lot of the ones that apply to other killers. It was extremely easy for a Spirit player to mind game themselves into extending chases. She never was as powerful as you make her out to be in the hands of average players.
One thing you didn't mention is that sound when she goes into the spirit form _constantly_ broke. Without the sounds of the survivors, even with the movement and invisibility, she is a bad killer because she relies on that sound so heavily. There were several months in a row where the sound was so scuffed that she was unplayable and you never saw her, and never saw content creators playing her.
Another thing that should be mentioned, is that her spirit form disturbs grass. For someone who was playing at medium graphic settings, paying attention to the grass was a tell that the Spirit was coming. Too bad that most survivors turned their graphics as low as they could to reduce the grass to counter Trapper.
Honestly, this video just feels very biased. Was she over buffed from PTB? Absolutely. But she never was better then nurse, and there was counterplay to her.
TBH I'm a bit shocked about your stance on her, since you _are_ a good player. A damn good player, one of the best at this game yet banging on about her as though she surpassed Nurse in anything. We never saw her replace the Nurse in tournaments. We never had the DCing waves that Nurse had. She was always near the top of a tier list, sometimes months locked in at #1 behind Nurse, but she always had the asterisk of 'if the sound worked'.
