Jim Varney once said of Ernest: "Ernest is a friend or relative we've all had at one point. He's abrasive, but he doesn't mean to. He gets all over excited, and ends up standing on your feet. I try to make him as comical as I can."
This video is living proof that Jim Varney is one of the most underrated actors of all time. I say underrated bcuz those who don't know about Ernest usually don't know anything about Jim Varney or who he even is... Which is a shame bcuz Ernest movies are one of a kind. RIP Jim we all love and miss you but ur legacy and remembrance lives on through us and your classic timeless films.
Jed showed he was more than his typecast... Having seen that, I would guess with all the other I've seen from him that he could go at literally anything and nail it. He was a master at what I say just about has to be the hardest of them all... Keeping a straight face thru his antics. He could have done anything.
I am recovering alcoholic. This is day one and I thought nothing could make me laugh. Haha, I have never seen this, very funny, Jim's a funny fuck in deed. Thank you Jim.
I'm 30 and grew up watching his movies. My niece and nephew (5 and 7 years-old respectively) both love his movies as well. Jim Varney made family-friendly material that wasn't outlandishly obnoxious of the backpack- and lunchbox-selling garbage of today.
Ernest is still my favorite funny character! I still watch all the old Ernest p worrel videos ! They are all classics now ! RIP. Jim Varney! Mike Edwards Crowley Louisiana.
Kackle Mackle Underrated to those that did not understand Jim made family friendly film's they don't make anymore. Jim also enjoyed stand up and play acting! Was a grate man for sure inspired many still dose.
@@jonc.m8717 The so called family friendly movies today aren't all that family friendly, IMO. They use some pretty foul language in supposed kid shows today. Even a lot of the ads of today are pure smut. I remember when Jim Varney always made sure to never let kids see him smoking or seeing him in a picture holding a cigarete. He knew it was a terrible addiction and didn't want the kids who looked up to him think it was ok to smoke. Even in "Ernest Goes to Jail", when the warden asked if he wanted a cigarette before being executed, Ernest said said, "No. Cigarettes'll kill ya". Too bad he wasn't able to quit smoking in time.
Life is truly deficient with out this man and his characters. He was an idiot savant wrapped in Shakespeare and love. God damn Jim l love and miss you. KNOW WHAT I MEAN VERN😊😢
What will always blow my mind, everyone said he was FUNNIER off camera…..I can’t fathom that. And he was close friends with Robin Williams. Thanks for everything Jim and Robin
theres a compilation of his commercial spots from the 80s and the bloopers at the end of the video proved this to be true. He was doing some spot involving a bag of groceries in a kitchen and the kitchen phone rang, unscripted of course, and without missing a beat he said, "...and you answer the phone." and the crew erupted in laughter
he was a comedic genius, but he played a few sinister roles, almost frightening to watch a funny man get real, then get down, yeah he was amazing, god i hate cigarettes
3:16 - 3:56, good God, the many personalities that man could portray! Thanks, Jim Varney, you misunderstood genius!!! As someone once famously stated: you were a man of many facets..... all turned on, know what I mean!? 🌎🇵🇷😉
These are so awesome. I revisit these once a year or so, when I need a laugh. I feel like we only saw a glimpse of what Jim was capable of. Very talented and interesting guy. Check out the book, The Importance of Being Ernest: The Life of Actor Jim Varney.
I love Jim Varney, quite literally thinking about potentially running my "potential" kids childhood by naming him Ernest. Jim would be better, come to think about it haha.
Had a cousin who met him in the 80s right about the time he was really getting famous. He said he was a real asshole, but then, so is my cousin. Anyway, he was funny as hell to me and I miss him. On a side note, idk who is into that sort of thing here, but this man had the PERFECT voice for ASMR! I would love to listen to him read in that voice while I try to go to sleep. It would put me right out. RIP Jim!
It's crazy to imagine as much as he wanted to do serious roles, this Astor Climmet guy was actually closest to what he wished he could have been doing. I hope he didn't hate doing comedy too much. It wasn't what he wanted, but....God did it shape so many of us into better than we'd have been without him.
My old dog's name was vern. Do you know what I mean, vern? Wonder where we found that one.... "Delightfully understated yet playfully demeur" best description of Jim ever
Jim Varney was the best actor with a great since of humor and it is very sad what happened to him, I remember when I started watching Earnest Goes To Camp and Earnest Goes To Jail from when I was 12 years old it was when I was living in Germany.
While listening to "Astor Clement" talk it's hard not to think of the distinctive voice of Paul Frees, as in "Welcome foolish mortals" (to the Haunted Mansion)@Disneyland, among other things but is probably most often confused with Orson Welles I think. Anyway another great Varney character.
Aurochs hunter ....As if that even matters compared to the flashes of brilliance he left behind.... If it takes sparking a couple cigs on the way then.... meh...ha!! It's best to take the best parts of somebody's legacy to remember them by. #LeaveOutAllTheRest
Jim would walk in you'd see five different personalities walking with him! Jim is wearing two rings on his right hand during the first few of these, then , they are removed. Hard to see, but was he wearing the RARE SILVER SADDLE RING ring my friend Brigitta gave him at our Thanksgiving dinner with Joseph P. Liles ? He really liked it so she gave it to him! Some great memories , Jim. RIP. I agree with the former comment question too: WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG TO PUT THESE ON YOU TUBE ?

What an amazing actor. Totally underrated.
Like, that was his job, man.
Nishant Gogna he was genius.
Imagine a world where we got him, Robin Williams, and Jim Carey in a film together during the mid 2000s... I want that timeline.
Indeed, a true genius!
This man was a genius.

He "Varnished" it I guess you could say... haha
Jim Varney's portrayal of Jed Clampet in the Beverly Hillbillies was stupendous.

That laugh gets me every time.
I'm in my 40's he always made me laugh when I was a kid and my father loved him also. He always had some hilarious moments

He was also a trained Shakespearian stage actor and he had a hell of a sense of humor.
