As a comedy actor Chevy Chase was great but in this format as a talk-show host he is completely out of his league. It was like he had no idea how to give a sincere compliment to such a good actor and all-round good person that Jim Varney was. Although there was no need for it, it was almost like he was jealous of Jim Varney's success. Just my opinion.

Anybody remember Pat Sajak's attempt at late night hosting?
It was just as awkwardly bad as this. Neither show lasted any amount of time.
Seth Meyers is just as terrible to watch. They've got the formatting of his show set up so that it dilutes his awfulness so that it keeps limping on and on.
I keep hoping they'll finally get around to putting a bullet in it in order to make way for a better show.
Stagnantly formulaic political satire has been the late night soup du jour for the last 3 years or so, and they seem happy to kill late night tv in such a sad way.
Carson, Berle, and the others are all probably rolling around in their graves over what's become of the late night format they nurtured and made so successful.

This is the first time I haven't liked Chevy Chase. If you take the time to go back and watch this twice, (as I did to be sure), you'll see there is hardly a "slice", (meaning each question/answer exchange etc), that chevy doesn't seem to be putting Jim down in one way or another. He's almost like the proverbial "school yard bully" in that he never, (or hardly ever), gives the poor guy a break. It might be partially because I always liked and respected Jim Varney and it's obvious that chevy chase was the more successful of the two but it was like... from the very start he got Jim "down" and never let him "up" (as a respected actor). It makes me love Jim Varney more and chevy chase less. (Yes I kept chases name in lower case on purpose. That's my way of showing as much disrespect as possible to chase. Since I'm a "nobody", that's the best I can do. RIP Jim.

I've laughed at Chevy time and time again, but he has been swallowed up by history. Don't agree on this one. Chevy was just really stiff outside the boundaries of scripted comedy, and his interactions with live humans illustrated that. The sad irony is that some of his best comedic moments were total improvisations - unscripted, but executed within the confines of parameters the writers (which he sometimes was) laid out for him. Love Chevy, heard he's a prick, but he's also a national treasure, and to see him pseudo-pander to Jim Varney was cringeworthy. Jim was a rare dude. How about that dulcimer playing? I also noticed how belittling and disrespectful Chevy is being to Jim. I thought Chevy starting the interviewing by saying to Jim, all he sees him do is the "vern guy," I knew right there Chevy was going to do a horrible job interviewing Jim. I am sure that is not what Jim wanted to hear, or wanted the audience to hear, just being the "vern guy" right off, when he was there to promote a break away role from Ernest in the "Beverly Hillbillies." I am sure it was important to make sure the audience recognized Jim as Ernest, but Chevy's intro just sounded rude. He could of just mentioned "Jim Varney is known for his role as Ernest" in the introduction before Jim came out.
I also wondered if Chevy wasn't really listening to Jim either, kinda spaced out a couple of times. Toward the end of interview when Chevy asks about the new Ernest movie, Jim says right off it comes out next month, then when Jim finishes explaining the movie, Chevy asks when does the movie comes out? Was Chevy just being sure the audience heard when the movie was coming out, or was Chevy not really listening to Jim? Then when Jim brings out the duclimer he explains it is played flat on your lap, when he hands it to Chevy he tries to play it like a guitar. Again, was Chevy not really listening to Jim, or was he just trying to be funny by playing it like a guitar? He saw Jim was playing flat on his lap...
I am not surprised by how Chevy acted, I have always figured he's a jerk in real life. While I do like some of the vacation movies. I only watch the vacation movies if I see them while flipping through channels, never owned copies of them or make a point to go out of my way to find them to watch. I have never been a fan of Chevy.
