Best live band ever. This concert was 40 years ago, and they are still killing it. Should check out a later song, Fear of the Dark live in Rio. They didn't get radio play back then because they were too heavy for FM then, plus the imagery on their albums scared the mainstream. Most of their songs are about literature and historical events.

A great band, and a great bunch of guys. I used to hang out with these lads in East London, drinking and watching them play at our pub The Ruskin Arms. I even played football (soccer) ⚽️ with Steve Harris for a local amateur team......the best things about Iron Maiden is the fact that they have stayed true rockers over the years and stayed really humble blokes. This band alone, more than any teacher, got me to read classic literature. The Trooper, Rime of the Ancient Mariner are prime examples. This band lead me to Alfred Lord Tennyson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which lead me to Blake, Byron, Dante and more.
They sung songs about stories the authors and poets wrote and I wanted to find out why they did so, and that lead me down the rabbit hole of classic literature. Metal used to get such a bad wrap back in the day and it's a shame.
These guys are not only fantastic musicians, but wonderful human beings. The original drummer, Clive Burr had left the band after the success of Number of the Beast, but the rest of the band didn't understand why. He left due to his MS diagnosis. The band found out years later and started the Clive Burr MS Trust Fund (Clive Aid). One show a tour, every year, 100% of the sales of tickets and merch goes to the Fund. Clive passed away (at age 56), and they STILL run the fund, which goes to his family.
I've seen them live several times and would LOVE to meet them, ask them questions, and go to the pub with them. Not only because I'm a fan of their music, but because I'm a fan of them as people. Just decent human beings.
Iron Maiden (and metal in general) didn't get a lot of rotation back in the day, they got popular mostly by word of mouth, running the pub circuit in England. They do get their radio respect now, especially on XM Radio and music streaming services. It was just different back in the late 70s through the 80s.

That was a fantastic reaction! You're right Iron Maiden weren't played much on mainstream media as they were considered to be to demonic for the censors back in the 80s. But they have a big following in the metal world.

In theUK in the 80’s metal was purposely repressed by the New Romantic music business. It was the most popular underground music ever.
Metal was allowed elsewhere but in UK we had to dig for it. USA, Australia etc enjoyed their rock but in the UK Amazingly talented musicians like this didn’t get the recognition they deserved while prancing pop posers stole the limelight

Always fun to see someone’s first reaction to Iron Maiden, love the watching the wow on your face when you hear Bruce Dickinson’s vocal power!
Steve Harris’ “galloping” bass style is his signature and he’s often touted as one of the greatest metal bassists. Iron Maiden usually delves into darker subject matter, but the lyrics are deep and sometimes reflect classic literature, history, movies and mythology, as well as commentary on man’s inhumanity to man. I’ve been a fan since the mid-80s, and always enjoyed the vocal, lyrical and instrumental excellence of one of heavy metal’s premier bands.
More songs to check out: Revelation, Flight of Icarus, Aces High, Wasted Years, Fear of the Dark, The Wicker Man, For the Greater Good of God, … and from their latest album, The Writing on the Wall, Hell On Earth and Death of the Celts
Bruce Dickinson also has six solo albums… top Bruce solo songs to check out: Silver Wings, Kill Devil Hill, Tears of the Dragon…

Iron Maiden established themselves as a UK heavy metal band w/ progressive influences... and they sounded very unique even in their era of the 80's... Dual lead guitars, galloping bass and signature time changes, defined Iron Maiden's sound.
This performance was from 1982, and 'Hallowed be thy name' was not a single from their 3rd album 'The number of the beast' that year... but it became popular w/ their audiences and stayed in their setlist for decades... In 1993, a live version of 'Hallowed be thy name' was released as a single from their live album "A real dead one"...
Steve Harris (bass) was writing his own songs by 1975, but his band found them 'complicated' and refused to play them live... So, he formed Iron Maiden in 1975 in the local scene of the West End of London w/ a group a friends jamming together, so that he could play his songs in the bars... Harris wanted to build the band and started looking to improve the band in 1976 and beyond... Dave Murray (guitar) first joined in '76 and became a permanent member by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) also joined in '77 and gave Iron Maiden a raw 'punk rock' feel... Doug Sampson played drums and Iron Maiden spent years playing bars and clubs across the UK and built a following by 1979 without a record out.
In '79, an Iron Maiden demo recording sparked label interest and the band was signed that year... Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (2nd guitar) joined to record the first Iron Maiden album in 1980 w/ Harris, Murray and Di'Anno... Their manager Rod Smallwood suggested that Iron Maiden needed a mascot, and a painting by artist Derek Riggs of a skeletal ghoul w/ hollow eyes was named 'Eddie the head' and became the band's "character" in all their artwork and marketing.
Touring in 1980 as an opening act, Iron Maiden was rising fast as the first album charted at #4 in the UK... Adrian Smith (2nd guitar) joined for the 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981 w/ producer Martin Birch working w/ Iron Maiden in the studio until 1992. Iron Maiden spent 1981 touring the US and Japan for the first time... but the demanding touring schedule wore singer Paul Di'Anno out and he was out that year...
Seeking a replacement for Paul Di'Anno for their 3rd album, Iron Maiden decided on Bruce Dickinson (vocals) who brought his high range vocals into the band and was nicknamed 'Air Raid Siren' ... Their 3rd album 'The number of the beast' was released in 1982 and charted at #1 in the UK and sold platinum in the USA... Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for the album 'Piece of Mind' as Iron Maiden were now a headlining act worldwide. The next album 'Powerslave' in 1984 marked a commercial peak for the band as they sold out arenas across the world... Long Beach, California shows were recorded on that tour for the 1985 live album 'Live after death'.
Maiden did not deviate from their 'formula' of heavy metal on their records and more success came w/ the albums 'Somewhere in time' (1986) and another #1 UK album 'Seventh son of a seventh son' (1988)... but creative frustrations were causing friction within the band and Adrian Smith (guitar) left Iron Maiden in 1989... Janick Gers (guitar) joined in 1990 ...(pronounced "yan - nick jee- yers")
'No prayer for the dying' (1990) and 'Fear of the dark' (1992) were released after Gers joined... but more tensions led to Bruce Dickinson announcing in 1993 that he was leaving Iron Maiden for a solo career... Longtime producer Martin Birch retired in 1992... and Maiden's label EMI began cutting their promotion... So, there was a lot of uncertainty for Iron Maiden in 1994.
Steve Harris also went through a painful divorce, so his new songs were much darker than his previous work... Iron Maiden announced that Blaze Bayley (vocals) was joining the band in 1995 and Harris produced the new album 'The X Factor'... Unfortunately, the album was not a commercial success and Blaze Bayley was not accepted as the singer of Iron Maiden w/ his gruff vocal delivery... and he sounded odd singing Maiden's classic songs in concert... They tried again in 1998 w/ the album 'Virtual XI'... but the reaction was worse, and Iron Maiden was literally playing clubs and small venues on tour in the 90's decade... In early 1999, the decision was made to fire Blaze Bayley...
Meanwhile, Bruce Dickinson's solo career was not doing well either by 1996, and he had joined forces w/ Adrian Smith (guitar) by 1997 in his solo band... In 1999, both Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith were approached by Iron Maiden about rejoining the band, and they accepted... Iron Maiden announced a reunion tour in '99 and became a 3-guitar band for the first time... w/ Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Steve Harris (bass), Dave Murray, Janick Gers, and Adrian Smith (guitars) and Nicko McBrain (drums)
Rather than recycle their past catalog, Iron Maiden pressed forward w/ new music... 'Brave new world' (2000) was a minor success and Iron Maiden began rebuilding their fanbase on tour and were playing arenas again... They also began writing more elaborate, longer and progressive songs on later albums - 'Dance of death' (2003)... 'A matter of life and death' (2006)... 'The final frontier' (2010)... and 'The Book of Souls' (2015)... Maiden's popularity worldwide saw them touring arenas and stadiums as the internet was vital in promoting both old and new music from their catalog... Their latest album 'Senjutsu' was released in 2021... and Iron Maiden have been celebrating their legacy on tour recently, as well as promoting their new album.

I have been a fan of Maiden since the 80's and think they are without a doubt one of the top tier bands out there. This was a great performance but if you liked it I think you should watch their live performance from Toronto on the Flight 666 tour. It features the line up you read about, Dickinson, Smith, Murry, Gears, Harris, and McBrain,. The performance from Toronto is about 8 years old at this point so at the time the band was in their 50's but their energy level was still out of this world. They just seem to get better with age. I saw them in 2019 and they still put on a hell of a show.

One of THE best metal bands EVER !!! The sub genre was classified (if someone can even classify music sub-genres) as "New wave of british heavy metal". The "gallup" base style of Steve, the drums of Niko, the "magic" between Adrian and Dave .... there are times, when their two guitars sound like one, some times when they do two different parts, but the sond is like one part, played by four handed player. Janick Gers came later (in the beggining of the 90's) and contributed more to this magic, but it was already there. And on top of that, you put the voice of Bruce (who is also aviation pilot, fencing fighter, writer ... I think that he is the only metal perfomer, capable of piloting Boeing 747-400).

I'm in my late 40's and knew about Iron Maiden when i was really young, like 10. For whatever reason i listened to pretty much everyone else but not them. Now, here in my late 40's i'm rocking out to IronMaiden. The Trooper and more. Watching their concerts live is really something.
Watch "The Trooper" live from Chile. Just fucking excellent.
Pretty sure their song Alexander The Great has an awesome guitar solo in it as well. The video matching the song with the movie is pretty bad ass... i'd say a must watch at least once.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Partly, it's me enjoying your reaction, which picked up on all the best moments. The bass line was great. The vocalist (Bruce) really kept my interest, a good front man. You can see how this style of Heavy Metal grew out of the earlier music of Deep Purple, (and I personally like Ian's vocals as the "best" in Rock. And since you mentioned "Ball and Chain", please do "Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker at Woodstock. Don't miss the best 60's Blues/Rock singer after Janis.

Maiden is like a fine wine, they just keep getting better with age. Their shows in the 80's were great and somehow their recent shows are even better. First saw them in 1982 when they opened for Judas Priest. Never in my wildest imagination did I think they would still be filling arenas and stadiums in 2023 and still bringing their A game every night.
