When you reread the first book, it's glaringly obvious that Rand is the Dragon. The thing that keeps you from figuring it out the first time is that you're not supposed to be figuring out who the Dragon is. The Dragon is just one of many background legends that have been mentioned at that point.

    • @Sombriage
      @Sombriage 2 роки тому +28

The main purpose of the first book isn't purely about finding the Dragon Reborn but bringing those who can bend the pattern to their will to the Eye of the World. Moiraine brought the Two Rivers folk with her to stack things in their favor via the power of ta'veren.
Rand accepts the fact that he can channel at the end of the book but even then he doesn't fully accept that he is the Dragon Reborn as is shown in book 2 when he's talking to Moiraine, Siuan and Verin. Only in Book 3 when he's had enough of being haunted by one of the forsaken does he go down the path in accepting he is the Dragon Reborn.
The tv show tries to come off as some sort of mystery about "who's da dragon?" when the real urgency should be about the 3 ta'veren having dreams of a forsaken who says they won't acquire the power from the Eye of the World. The Dragon Reborn is hinted at in book 1 multiple times but it is more of a sideline plot point that develops more in future books - it isn't the sole focus of the first book imo.

I so agree! Everybody says they knew who the dragon was. They just can’t remember what it was like to red the first book cold. You have no idea that the dragon will be reborn except for he prophecies and it is confusing in the beginning because you have no idea about the prologue really till later in the book. The concept of the dragon being reborn doesn’t come up until later in the book. Rand himself doesn’t find out till Book 2.

      @@andrewb2494 Very easily actually.
Mat was already ill with the dagger's taint, and as Moirane said in the series, the Yellow aja are the finest healer's in the world. Simply have Moirane tell the others that she had some yellow sisters meet mat at the way gate, because on reflection she decided the dagger's corruption was too severe and needed curing, then instead of that shot of Mat just sitting there outside the gate, have a shot of him standing with some aes sidai.
My problem however here isn't actually with Barny Harris leaving, but with the complete changing of the mechanics of how the dagger works and Mat's character.
In the book, the dagger's influence is external to Mat, something imposed upon him. Yeah, it was stupid of him to take the dagger in the first place, but after that, the paranoyer and such the dagger causes are not Mat's fault, and indeed we're told (as I said), that Mat's basically good nature fights the corruption.
Here however, Mat has a darkness in him which somehow is tied up with the dagger, and the implication is that he was destined to go bad all along.
They might well have done this even if Barny harris had still been in the series; I mean, it's not as if they're going out of their way to portray any male characters in a good light, so why should Mat be any different.

That is not true. Rand defends Mat and Nynaeve wants to go back through the waygate to get him. The only one accepting it is Egwene. Moiraine sending the Reds is quite clever because 1. They will be distracted and thats tower politics 2. If he is not the dragon the Reds will simply have to let him go (gentling has no efdect on those who can't channel) and 3. So see I am sympathetic with them on this one, and I can kind of see what Rafe is doing in a very bad way.
1st the actor put them in a VERY difficult spot with him not finishing the season. Like they need to do something with Mat, one of the main characters, but they're kind of screwed because they physically don't have the actor for the last two episodes. So how do you write around a character that needs to be in Fal Dara to have his dagger stolen and be the impetus for the boys to actually go after the Horn of Valere (which we don't know if they'll even have since it is technically not that HUGE of a plot point if you think about it, the dagger is bigger).
2nd I think her sending the Reds after him is going to be Rafe's reason for why Matt despises and doesn't trust any Aes Sedai ever. In the books his reason for not trusting Aes Sedai is kind of thin, I mean they do save his life after all with the dagger, but if the Red's go after and abuse him a bit it would shore it up.
Don't get me wrong Rafe is BUTCHERING the books, but I'm willing to give him a little leeway with this one since the actor just apparently got up and left after shooting episode 6 and he did have to scramble to figure out wtf do we do with him. I can even see them reshooting the Ways and making the Power open them to explain why they couldn't go back and let Mat back in, I don't think that's the case, but I could see it.

    1) Sounds are a thing

    3) There's a literal test in psychology where you get pictures of people's eyes and four emotions and you have to pick the emotion the eyes are showing. I'm a woman with Aspergers, I just did such a test (I did do it once before as a teenager in school), I scored surprisingly 33 out of 36, the average is 26. So no, it is very much possible to still convey information about a persons emotional state even with the lower half of their face veiled. Especially emotions like being in actual labor! If it was about someone being slightly upset and you want to show the whole face to convey that, ok. But this woman is giving birth RIGHT NOW. They tend to be rather vocal and obvious about it.

What I've noticed is that there are almost no instances of men being exceptional, except when it doesn't matter and fail when it does.
    1) Lan does a decent job of protecting Moiraine during EP1 fight against the Trollocs, but she still gets hit with that knife.
1a) Tam, despite also being a blademaster like Lan (though somewhat out of practice, to be fair) gives a singular Trolloc a few papercuts with a power wrought sword.
    2) Lan takes them into Shadar Logoth, despite Moiraine's warning
    3) When Nynaeve shows up, in the show she gets to the point of putting a knife to Lan's throat. Book Lan calls her out when she's still hiding and watching him and Moiraine from a distance.
    4) Mat and Rand run from the singular darkfriend with a sword. Tom gets one small exception by getting her from a distance.
    5) Perrin doesn't even really struggle against the whitecloaks. Egwene gets credit for freeing the both of them AND taking out Valda, who begins crying like a little wuss, despite being canonically a blademaster (IIRC).
    6) The one who senses the Trolloc in the Ways is Egwene, despite being asleep. Moiraine and Lan are both able to sense Trollocs, due to their experience and the Warder bond, but the sleeping, untrained channeler does it.
6a) Lan doesn't sense when Moiraine masks her bond to take Rand into the Blight
6b) Lan only does a sneaky, stealth move INSIDE Fal Dara, to trick Nynaeve.

      What you are overlooking:
      1. Lan easily disarms Nynaeve when she threatens him with the knife. Same later with Rand.
      2. Lan taking them to Shadar Logoth is the right decision. In the books Moirane does the same against Lans objections.
      3. Lan is asleep while Moirane masks her bond, so he couldn't notice it. And should she have masked it while he was having sex with Nynaeve he has a good reason to assume why she masked it.
      4. Two boys running away from one darkfriend with a sword? Listen to what Shad says in this(!) episode about a sword being great a equalizer against unarmored opponents.
      5. Thom holding his own against a Myrdraal - if that is not exceptional what is?
      6. That Moirane is getting wounded in EP1 is her own fault - standing in the open against an opponent that has ranged attacks and relying on a warder without a shield to protect her is asking for trouble. She shoud have bothered to weave a shield to protect herself first.

I love how Min says the dragon reborn will be a shepherd, bought up in a village with two rivers.
We know in the show moirane knows min and has used her powers before, and Min has a vision pointing to a village with two rivers, and moirane then takes such a long time to, mmm, go to the place full of shepherds called the two bloody rivers!
I didn't hate episode 7 as much as the others, quite aside from silly moments like super pregnant ninja, and yet more ninaeve randomly levelling up and getting more powers, (handy she spent those stat points on force shield), but the logic of the way the series handles what should be a major reveal just boggles me!
Then again, one cannot write a character more intelligent than one's self, and it's pretty clear what the intelligence of the forsaken writers who produce this load of blood and bloody ashes is!

Honestly this episode was the most enjoyable for me as a fan of the books. The scene with Rand's mother fighting off a half dozen guys while giving birth was absolutely farcical and I laughed my way through the whole thing. It was the dumbest thing they have depicted so far, and I didn't think they could slip under that low-bar so competently. I think the show runner's should have read the whole series, it might have been helpful to remember that Rand's mother was Aiel Trained, but she was not herself Aiel. (If I recall correctly Rand's real father went to fight the dark one after his wife died on dragonmount)
I loved your reaction to Egwene demanding an apology. I hated her in that moment, and Rand refusing to apologies would have been much more in keeping with how poorly matched they are in the books. (squabbling siblings, not lovers!) I feel like the show runners tried to skip to the end of Egwene's story with the crap about being unbreakable. It is so much more pathetic and Mary-Sue (ish) for her to just have that immediately (and as a child). For what it's worth in the books Rand did talk about being Egwene's warder, but they both suspected it wasn't going to happen. I think it was after the introduction of Min who told her 'you aren't for her, and she's not for you''. (Maybe Near the end of book 1, since I think it was before Rand knew he could channel, but he was remembering Min's warning!)
I was amazed by the revaluation of the Dragon, and I agree with you-guys. This was a fake out, I'm expecting the 'many headed dragon' BS to come back again. It is just stunning to me that they took such a good reveal, and cut it down to Rand just walking up and saying 'yup I'm the dragon'. It was such a weak moment, and they sacrificed so much of the story to accomplish it.
You missed complaining about Moraine going into the Blight without her warder... I guess this version of Lan isn't as knowledgeable about the Blight, and she wouldn't be totally reliant on him to get the dragon through the blight! (She has the power of 'woman'... I guess that's all she could ever need). Admittedly it would be a full time job to catch everything that needs to be called out in this series, it is impressively bad. The last work that I know that was this badly adapted was 'Legend of the Seeker' which took names, and not much else from the 'Sword of Truth'.
As a note: Aes Sedai can mask their bond in the Books. (it comes up several times) Lan also is much more casual about sex than Nynaeve. The important point is that he is not casual about love! In new spring he nearly has a (unwanted) fling with a barmaid, he's fighting off a marriage proposal where his first lover is trying to marry him off to her daughter. Other Aes Sedai mention that Lan has been chased and caught by many women, but no one has ever been able to hold his heart. That is what always made Nynaeve different, she won his heart long, long before sex was involved. He spent more than a year running away from it, trying to deny it... but she won in the end. This basically ruins one of the most intricate relationships of the series. Rand spends so much time running from his loves that they don't get much time to shine, and Perrin is screwed from square one in this series. probably

Instead what he imagined they would say would be something like "Look here have another beer, have two on me, I'll be right back really." and then slip out the back door. this interview for those interested ua-cam.com/video/BXGhkXUChpc/v-deo.html Yet here we have all of the main cast Blindly following Moiraine like "Right then love off we go."

We hear about Lews Therrin Telamon, the Dragon who broke the world, and I honestly don’t remember how much his anticipated rebirth was talked about, but it never occurred to me at least that Rand was the Dragon reborn or that that was why Moiraine was interested in him until Moiraine revealed in the very last line of the book “the Dragon has been reborn,” and it’s not until the next book that she tells Rand and we find out why she was looking for them in the first place.

It's because Moiraine never brings up the Dragon Reborn to them, unlike in the show where she just blurts out the whole thing to get them out of the village. However, i'd argue that it's clear from very early on that Rand IS the main character of the series. RJ constantly points out the heron marked blade either through Rand's inner dialogue or through various people reacting to the sight of it. We also find out pretty early on (and i think this is what Shad is confusing) that Rand is a male who can use the one power. After that Rand eventually makes it to Caemlyn where we find out more about Logain (after the vague mentions at the start of the book), about false dragons, and this, i'd argue, strongly hints that Rand is the actual Dragon Reborn.

That the rest of us make the One Power of culture filthy, and that we aren’t supposed to interpret works of the past to suit our views. How many times and in how many places would you deny us the right to express our point of view? But also, if we take ten seconds to look at just what kind of work we have here, here is an example in a then male-dominated field of epic fantasy where essentially the premise is “Men fucked up the world, and women had to take over and keep the male side of the one power suppressed.”
If Eye of the World came out to day, you’d be screaming for his head, calling him a woke misandrist. But since it’s a 30 year old work that you read as kids, you don’t register how liberal of a premise it is.
Yes, the work is more LGBTQ positive. Yes, it gives women characters more to do in the scenes. Yes, it has the position of the Dragon opened up to both genders. And that may offend some people with delicate sensibilities! Seems like those exist everywhere. But the hilarious thing is that you don’t realize YOU ARE ONE OF THEM! You’re literally trying to cancel Wheel of Time because you don’t like it. Trouble is, and you might not realize this if dear old Shad is the only person you listen to, but this is one of the most watched series, and watched-through of all time on Amazon Prime. And a lot of people love what they’ve seen!
You are not the sum total of society. You and people like you no longer have the control you once did. Yours is not an objective position, and you do not have the right to destroy other people’s expression so that your point of view can triumph. If you don’t like the ideas that we put forward, put forward your own. That’s what living in a free country allows you. When they screwed up Cowboy Bepop, I didn’t try and get it canceled, though I wasn’t to eager to see it continue, nor sad at the end of the series. No, instead, I just put out a critique. Boom. Done. I don’t have to destroy what I dislike. if I really got to hating WoT, I’d just post a critique and stop watching.
Grow up. You want your son to be strong, show him how to endure disagreement with grace and dignity. This need to control everything reflects a weakness inside.

My biggest gripe about the Blood Snow opening isn't even the pregnant fighting or the lowered veil or anything else people are complaining about...
It's that the scene has been shifted to feature Tigraine instead of Tam. The books say nothing about Tigraine being a dominant warrior (she isn't even aiel... She's just been a maiden for about 6 years). This scene is actually about how Tam, a foreigner and a Blademaster comes across this baby in the snow and basically gives up the sword to raise the baby of his fallen enemy. It's an extremely noble moment and it's stripped of him so that we can get a YASSSS QUEEN moment for Tigraine, who is not a hero and was violating both ji'e'toh and Maiden codes to fight. Plus the Aiel are the aggressors in this battle.
If they're gonna do the fight I agree with Shads take... Have Tam and his soldiers cut down some other maidens (though they'll get a couple because they're good fighters too) ...
Also to Shad's point... Attacking a pregnant woman? If you've never seen the movie Children of Men... There is an amazing single shot sequence where a battle comes to a screeching halt as a baby is escorted out of the battle area. Both sides just stop fighting and give way. It's powerful as hell.

    • @Highbrowser
      @Highbrowser 2 роки тому +4

      1) Tam is revealed as a soldier who showed her mercy and took care of her son after she died. I think that's plenty admirable. 2) It's not just about Tigraine. Up to this point, nobody's actually seen a living Aiel warrior. Tigraine doesn't just represent women, she represents our first glimpse of an Aiel. If a female, pregnant, in-labor Aiel is that deadly, it stands to reason that a man or woman not so encumbered would be even deadlier. Tigraine just made the Aiel look incredible. It also, as I've pointed out elsewhere, justifies how the hell somebody would let her out here while pregnant. She's just that good.
As for attacking a pregnant woman? First, let's understand that to the other cultures of the Westlands, Aiel are considered savages, and so her being pregnant might not be as discouraging to an opponent as it would be if they were dealing with a woman from the Westlands proper. Second, and most importantly, the reason in Children of Men that EVERBODY just freezes in reverence is that they're carrying the first baby born in years. But this is a savage Aiel. Part of the suspense for Book readers is seeing just how unlikely Rand's birth was. The stab wound is particularly hair-raising.
This show is not a literal translation. But many of the best adaptions aren't literal.

Well Shad you know that hard labor pays of at the end. Thanks for still doing this even on the brink of madness

1:20:01 Shad, in The Great Hunt Rand was able to hold back Machin Shin by channeling balefire into the way gate. He held it back long enough for the way to be closed, but it was only because the opening was narrow enough that he could just balefire flamethrower his power to destroy anything that tried to poke out. The idea of an untrained person holding back that force in the ways is more than a stretch. Its insane.

Rand was untrained in TGH....and didn't know balefire yet...lol.

What balefire in The Great Hunt are you talking about? Correct me if I'm wrong, he learns it in book 3.

@@fudgyvmp3961 Balefire is something that is both learned and instinctive. Both Rand and Nyeave use balefire in the great hunt instinctively. It isn't until much later that they learn to actively use it on purpose. Also I think you need to rethink your logic if you think holding a bottleneck is the same as stopping a force that is surrounding you. Rand had to hold a single space about the size of an Ogier, Nyeave created a giant bubble covering the entire group.

@@TheSilverOrn Rand first uses balefire in TDR on dark hounds, not machin shin. Nyneave also first uses it in TDR, but on Fades.

@@fudgyvmp3961 The way its described in the books it appears that Rand is using balefire against Machin Shin, in addition in that same book when the three ladies are captured and three Fade come to claim them, Elayne and Egwene both use fire to burn fades while Nyeave sends out a bar of balefire and all three of them have no clue what that just was except that the Fade vanishes without a trace. It was when the Aiel rescued them and the woman Nyeave saved dies from a Fade sword.

I jotted down my thoughts as I rewatched this episode:
    - Theatrical fights in cold open, humans don’t fight like this.
    - Of course the pregnant woman warrior takes down more dudes than everyone else combined this season (don’t have a problem with this normally but coupled with other instances of this I can’t help but mention it).
    - Assassinating Mat’s character for no reason now…don’t see why we need to do that.
    - Bullshit love triangle trash, my favorite thing about EotW is the fact that Perrin and Egwene cared for each other very much in a platonic manner and always admired that Jordan never tried to push any of the dumbass love triangle shit but I guess that’s gone now…there goes most of Perrin’s character.
    - Dumbass theatrical garbage in Fal Dara, no human walks into a room like that.
    - Agelmar is an idiot now i guess
    - Continue to shit on Mat’s character because why not
    - You have to change Min’s viewings ofc
    - No Min visions for Mat I guess
    - If that’s the actual meaning to Min’s Moiraine viewing then that’s retarded
    - Egwene’s character finally comes through but in a crazy cringy love triangle scene
    - Moiraine Lan backstory tease scene wasn’t terrible…but was dullest possible scenario
    - Lan is a creep
    - Family very happy to have Lan for dinner, Lan disappears from table mid-dinner, family continue meal like he never existed and are very surprised to see him back as if he never was there before.
    - Lan’s shit with Kids….and he has attended a session about consent for sure.
    -De-aging software used on Tam?
    - Min saw a movie in her viewing of Tam?
    - Perrin does one of there “pretend to knock the door after you’ve already been seen walking in”
    - Not gonna get closure on Perrin’s feelings for Egwene? Purpose fulfilled and cheap drama achieved I guess
Overall wasn’t the worst episode considering it comes after a couple of garbage episodes but when averaged out with the rest of the season I think we’re sitting at a 4/10 adaptation of WoT and a 6/10 TV show at best.
