Please keep talking about wheel of time. Not a lot of youtubers picked up on the tv series and we need someone to defend Jordan just like there are people that defend Tolkien against amazon. Keep up the good work.
Brandon should have. He failed and took the money to shut up. Guess not all mormans have honor.
@@childrenoftolkien I was so disappointed with him. The least he could do was stay silent after the show but he couldn't even do that. Something tells me that he'll be a million times more careful with his own series, at the end of the day this was just an opportunity for him to make connections in Hollywood and nothing more.
The good news is that the main reason so few people cover Wheel of Prime stuff is because the show is having virtually no impact on the culture. This show will fade away into obscurity and we can all happily forget about it. In the mean time though, watching the Knights Watch talk about it is far more entertaining than the show.

I love the fact that the two of you doing the lines were actually so much closer in appearance to the books' descriptions of Perrin and Aviendha than the show's casting was
and they are on par with the tv show's ..."talent"
Accurate.
I was Gonna Say. Oz wouldn't be my first casting choice for Perrin, but damn if he doesn't fit the bill better than the show.
I loved the quote "Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain." To the point that I put it on my high school graduation cap
"You don't swing the sword badly?" This is all time worst choice of a line so far. The Aiel always refer to fighting as "dancing", usually Dancing the Spears. Gaul's line was something along the line of "You dance well for a wetlander." Think about how much information you get about Aiel culture with just such a short line versus that thing about a sword. Also, Perrin never uses a sword in the entirety of the series, closest he comes is dual wielding hammer and belt knife, but when he first met Gaul he was using his Axe. We're far beyond poor adaptation and well into actively and intentionally wrong.
Adding to that it's explained that Aiel hate swords & further on why they do. An Aiel would NEVER say that. It literally breaks their customs and beliefs.
Cultural Vandalism
I came to the comments for this, it should be a comment about how he dances well, with his confusion allowing for more cultural expansion
@@thatnobodyguy1535 Aiel will never even hold a sword. The closet thing they will do. Is wrap a sword in a blanket. Then hold that. Thats what they did with Lamans sword.
Yeah. I couldn't finish the first episode. It was obvious where it was headed. Having him married early on, and now introducing Avienda this way means no Fail too. It's funny, because Faile is the one character in the books that "revolts" against gender roles and would have been an obvious choice for them to keep.
They removed Gaul??? That's a bad decision. He's such a cool dude; with major sidekick energy.
But that means adding a man! can't do that in 2022.
@@Ushio01 Exactly! Even worse, he had a relationship with TWO women at the SAME time. The women were going for it and it was consensual. But that means it was very likely r@pe. 🤡🤡🤡
@@cinhh Wait till Amazon hears about Rand then.
@@Qutut Who is this "Rand" character you speak of? Is he in the show? 🙃
Gaul and perrin was a good team up. Stupid af if he's not there
Maiden's Kiss has a group of Aiel maidens of the spear all put their spears to the man's neck, then take turns kissing him. After each kiss, if they are unsatisfied with the man's performance then they move the spear blade closer to his neck. How much he bleeds depends on how good a kisser he is. So not for the faint of heart or sane of mind. Usually a group of maidens will ambush or trick a man into playing. Matt is one of the very few that actually volunteered, though he didn't know what hew was getting into.
Well Matt is too powerful to be defeated in such a game.
Wait Perin DOES NOT USE A SWORD! He has an Axe! The Axe is important to his character!
Yes, when does he ever pick up an axe? Also where is Faile as he is having this conversation.
and later a hammer!
donno man, i bet they rewrite it so perrin gets with avienda. seems consistent with the rest of the TV lore.
wow wasnt expecting claudia doing some acting!! the scenes with claudia 10 out of 10! better than anything amaozn ever produced
The destruction or outright removal of male mentor characters for the boys is astounding to me. Where's Elyas? Where's Tam? Thom is now Kurt Cobain. Oh, and Abel is a scumbag. This hurts the story when they reappear later on as well.
This show isn't going to get that far
Yeah I doubt Abel reappears later.
What they did to Mat and his family is just unforgivable. Abel was NOT a lecher. He was one of the most respected horse traders in the two rivers and Mat's skill with a staff, great enough to defeat two near blademasters simultaneously while recovering from being separated from the Dagger, came from Abel. Just reprehensible all around.
Now I want to see Oz, Claudia and Nathan just awkwardly reading bad scripts every now and then.
Nathan would be great as show Rand
-"my water is yours" instead of "I see you"
-"you don't swing the sword badly" instead of "you dance the spears well for a wetlander"
-Perrin instead of Rand
All I can do is laugh at the carnage as what I love is violated
00:16:40 they do explain “Kiss the Maiden”. They surround you and give you a collar of spearheads. They then take turns kissing you. And if you kiss badly, they give them a push to “encourage you”. This was book 4 into (Matt playing with Tier Lords and describes how he nicks himself less shaving. He also did not mention the detail of the reward for winning. Though he never made it to his bed.
....I'm stealing that idea for my dnd game.
Maiden's Kiss
I thought it was maiden's kiss
and he used his experience later to impress his lady.
28:00 the Three-Fold Land line is lifted from Urien (poorly) in The Great Hunt Ch 28.
No one would say that Aiel never left the waste because the largest geopolitical event of the last 20 years was the AIEL WAR!
ad even Emondsfielders know of that, considering Tam was there. Not to mention Rand...

WHY ON EARTH WOULD AVIENDHA HAVE TOH TO PERRIN?!?! I feel your rage Shad... The Wheel of Time holds a special place in my heart. My father introduced me to the books. It's my favorite series and I re-read or listen to the books usually once a year. Truly through their arrogance and pride the show runners have perpetrated an act worse than Laman's sin...
They are probably going to get rid of Faile and have Perrin get together with Aviendha because Rand having more than one girlfriend is sexist and problematic. So Rand is either going to get with Min or Elaine and Aviendha will be Perrin's girlfriend.
It sounds like they're changing it so that it can be incurred by someone doing something good for you (eg Perrin rescuing her), which shows they didn't pay attention to the books & concept of Ji'e'toh (I had to look up how to spell that); Toh can only really be incurred by the person (doing something shameful or creating an obligation, if someone does something honourable for you then they would gain ji.
When Perrin rescued Gaul he didn't feel an obligation towards him, beyond that of a friend & worthy companion.
You watch. There will be a love triangle between Perrin, Rand and Aviendha, and no Faile.
@@FURognar
Well Faile was an intelligent strong willed woman in ways they cannot fathom. Ergo woman with no fighting power greater than a man bad.
Perrin doesn't actually even meet Aviendha in the books, does he?
I can't think of a single conversation they have.
Shad: I'm angry again for the disgusting adaptation.
**FLICKER **
Amazon: I win again Shad
Im glad that Oz is reading wheel of time. I feel like this conversations are much more interesting than review of season one because you guys can go back and forth more.
Though, I wish Shad reread book 2 and 3 before season 2 so he has fresh memory of it
i re-read the books in the year before the "show" came out. such a good series of books. i really wish they would stop adapting things i love into shows / movies. :(
They could make content out it, and get paid to do it. It would be great, especially if it was live, and people could chat/superchat.
@@owlsayssouth Agree, as harsh as it is I think this should have goten Cowboy Bebop treatment and I'm still baffled that it isnt cancelled
It really needs to be said that this series of books places women in some of the most powerful and prominent roles in the story without these hacks having to create the trash that they are making. The women are very prominent and strong throughout the story. The series actually shows the equality and necessity of each sex and how the world must have both to survive.
And the entire book is about young adults going out into the wide world and meeting and interacting with different cultures and becomming beter for it.
@@theabhorrentchef7226 so true, you'd also think that if they were good writers & film makers you would be able to associate yourself with the characters from the film nomatter what or who they are...human, animal or even object, personification is a common human trait.
@@theabhorrentchef7226 Stories have always been used to shape how people thought, teach the next generation the morals and behaviours to fit into the culture and succeed at life (being brave and killing your own personal demons). It's become like this because people know that and are using the media to shape the world into their ideals. This is especially as were seeing the effect of generations being raised by Disney and TV to believe all the 'modern' thinking. Now were seeing the rage that the world doesn't actually work like they think it should.
For the writing I think a lot of it comes from their experiences and they wrote about what they lived or saw, now their world is so safe/controlled they stuggle to understand real fear (other than getting the wrong latte or an advocado shortage) and how people would cope with that in real life (both at the time and after).
The term you were looking for regarding Ariel culture is "Ji'e'toh" (Honor and Obligation)
And this seems horrible! First they introduce Thom so late hes barely a character, and now they are getting rid of Gaul and instead having Avienda show up way early and with the wrong character!?!
And yes, it is dishonorable to remind someone of toh, as it implies that person is unaware of having it/too stupid to notice.
I was wondering how many people were yelling that at the screen....... ji'e'toh seriously guys
Shad: Says in a mournful tone "Oh I need to go back and do a deep dive into season one..." Oz: Replies with haste and confidence " I will join you in that..." Only a true friend follows you into hell! Cheers Oz, you are a true follower of Ji'e'toh. May you always find shade and water!

LoL no matter how many different ways these lines are presented it's always terrible!!!! I did the same thing on my channel about a week ago and I have to say my reading is Aviendha and Perrin were pretty epic too lol!!!? You guys are great keep up the good work!!!
i started reading wheel of time at about after the casting video you guys did(and binge watching the episode reviews), and seeing shad's passion for the books. im now at the end of book 7 and im loving it.
17:05 Regarding Mat's inversion, there is a shot in the show of him snapping at a kid on the road to Tar Valon, but in the books, it says that when he is falling under the influence of the dagger, kids don't set of his paranoia the way adults do, and they actually get inspired to try performing for money when a family appreciates their efforts that begin with Mat juggling to amuse the kids. It's like they went out of their way to get Mat exactly the opposite. After he got the dagger, he was the one telling Rand to trust Thom.
Also, for the record, we do get a description of Maidens' Kiss. A group of Maidens put spearpoints to a man's neck and he has to kiss each one. She pulls back her spear, or presses it closer, depending on how well he performs.
Please be a fake leak, please be a fake leak, please be a...who am I kidding. This is exactly the kind of thing they'd write.
I just finished A Memory of Light. I cried every kind of tear that exists.
What did you think about Matt’s trick with the river and the people from Hinderstap??

Hollywood and streaming services are definitely taking the quantity over quality approach. It's like a $1.99 all you can eat buffet - the food is terrible.....but there's lots of it.
You are now required to film all 14 books plus prequel. We'll start setting up donations for the production. Maybe we can have Brandon Sanderson do a video for the gofundme.
Only reason I watched Season 1 was because it had that car crash phenomena. It really is a shame what has been done to this franchise. Hopefully in a decade or 2 after the taint is washed away we'll have someone take a genuine crack at it.
Also does anyone know of any WoT subreddits that survived the purge? RIP Whitecloaks.
The show is a giant turd festooned with member berries.
When you say Wheel of time season 2.
I get the mental image of a seanchan damane, pacifier in mouth, dancing macarena.
Wouldn't it be "You dance the spears well"? Aiel frequently refer to fighting as "dancing the spears".
3:32 wait, they did WHAT to Perrin? Now I'm even happier that I didn't watch this show, I barely completed the fourth book so far, but I can say that Perrin is my favorite, so I'm happy and relieved I didn't see him being destroyed character wise so badly.
He can't destroyed if he has no character
That book is one of my favorite in the series because of Perrin. Some people think there is a slog for him around book 9-10, but you’ll be fine. I think mostly that’s due to stories requiring multiple books by that point in the series and we all had to wait years in between releases.
Oh Oz, my boy, you are getting into the good stuff! I envy you of the joy of a first time read through. Great video as always, gents and lady, keep it up!
An Aiel wouldn't commend the use of a sword; she might say "you dance well for a wetlander". I desperately held out hope for this show until about episode 5. Why would they deliberately choose to work on something they obviously detest?
I’m reading the books (only on book 3 so far), and I am not going to watch any more of the show, it just spoils what I’m imagining as I’m reading.
A wise decision!
Love seeing Oz enjoy reading them for the first time. You guys make me want to reread the books again.
Given the fact that Amazon is pushing their political ideologies in LOTR. I’m not surprised if they are going to ruin season 2 of Wheel or Time. Lol
Im not surprised they are going to ruin season 2 after ruining season 1.
I've finally seen some clips of the girl playing Aviendha and wow... they missed that casting bad. They are going to screw up the Aiel just as bad as I feared. They just don't understand the books.
Je'i'toh breaks down as Je is honor you accrue through actions. Killling an armed enemy, slaying a huge beast for eg. Toh is the honor you owe to someone else. And only YOU know how much Toh you owe. It's up to YOU do determine how to meet your Toh. It's all about personal responsibility which is something the writers lack.
Love your content fellas!
Shad thanks to you and Friends I have been listening to Wheel of Time and just started book 5. It is Incredible.

"Death comes to us all; we can only choose how to face it when it comes." is from The Dragon Reborn, that feels too early for it to be an Aeil line, they appear in that book but in a relatively small role, I think it probably is a Lan line

The artistic mutilation of Robert Jordan’s beautiful literary work is physically repulsive.
I have been told that I should attempt writing, but if this is the fate of what I may create, I’d rather my stories die with me.
the only thing you got wrong is that they "didn't punish people physically", egwene's backside has something to say to that
34:00 The Sin is another Urien line lifted from TGH, but memory of the sin is granted to Clan Chiefs and Wise Ones. But it was so bad, they will not speak of it.
You guys talking about Wheel of Time makes me feel like I need to go back and read it again.
It is a HUGE commitment though
Shad's right this scene is a rip off of Perrin rescuing Ghaul. He says something like "You dance the spears well Wetlander." Ghaul, Bain, & Chiad are Perrin's main Aiel connected characters. He barely interacts with Avienda at all.
They don’t want to pay the author. Jangle keys for the initial viewing, then swap everyone out and call it their own.
They already paid for it. They aren't being cheap on royalties, just cheap on writing staff.
Jordan often sets up information for characters, by having it come up through DIFFERENT characters. For instance, Moiraine describes the symptoms of spontaneous channeling to Nynaeve, and readers who are paying attention will notice those same things happening in Rand's plotline. Or Gaul talking with Perrin in Book 4, gives a kind of alternate regular Aiel-on-the-street perspective of their Prophecies coming true, at the same time as Rand is fulfilling them. That's the kind of thing no one would say to Rand, of course.
Rand & Matt learning gleeman skills and traveling together is my favorite part of the first 3 books (only on book 3 so far). The traveling magicians part of Dragonlance is great, they can't leave the traveling part out 😔
Your WoT videos are my favorites. Keep them coming! Back in high school I read through book 10, then fizzled out. I started re-reading to cleanse my palate when the amazon series came out and just caught up to the point where I stopped before, so I'm hungry for all the WoT discussion right now.
"We have committed a grave sin...one that shall echo across the generations."
"My goodness. What did you do?"
"Hell if I know."
Are you really surprised? Of course they would double down and think their poo smells like roses. Also can you guys do more skits? Better than SNL.
I like Oz and Claudia more than the show’s casting.
55:00 it is dishonourable to remind an Aiel of Toh that has been MET. After Toh is met, it is like it never happened.
I stopped thinking of the show as wheel of time after ep.3. I watch all of your reviews/previews for a good laugh at the hubris and arrogance of the showrunners/writers. Keep it up!
I had been on the fence about watching season 2. Thanks for bringing this up so my decision can be more informed.
There is an example of the Aiel beating as punishment. To avoid spoilers, remember what happened with Egwene right before she returned to the Tower.
A beating also takes place after a certain redhead leaves his maidens behind, again.
@@Madcowdiseiz bwahaha, I remember that XD
I know GoT didn’t pay attention to its props, but the water bottle in this scene really ruined the immersion for me. Otherwise it had the same production values as anything Disney has crapped out in the past two years.
I will steal the "raffed" adjective. I believe Ghual tells Perrin after he is freed that Perrin dances the spears well. Also Matt does tell us what maidens kiss or kiss the spears is.
Egwene's toh to the wise women was to kneel in front of them and be whipped. Granted she was in a rush to leave and didn't have time for more.
Knights Watch should do a live show talking about the WoT books as OZ reads them, and Shad/red Sonya re-reads. It would make great content! I love seeing people on their journey through the series. I'd love to see Oz theory craft about the future books. I'd love to see what Shad pick up on that he missed previously. Like how I've been reading since 2008, and only this year realised why Elaine keeps getting her veil in her mouth. It's because she turns her nose up at everyone lmao.
It also means people would PAY YOU TO READ WOT! How sweet a deal is that?
Am currently watching a weekly series of people who like th3 show reading the books. They still like the show, for some reason, dspite now having started Fires of Heaven.
I woulc much prefer a reread through with teh Watch discussing this.
Listened to the books and never finished the first season.
I wouldn’t call it my favorite series but it was fun, didn’t like how abrupt the ending was in the books.
To each their own. I really liked the abrupt ending. It left me feeling shellshocked in a kind of appreciation for what I just read for like a week.
abrupt?
I mean the series is anything but abrupt lmfao
@@gravyjones9746 Think they're talking about the lack of any sort of lengthy epilogue that is imo all too common in epic fantasy.
@@TechnoMinarchist It is common because the return is an integral part of epics. If you don't return to home AND bring back the new information AND use it to fix the common everyday problems, then the story lacks a major segment of the epic structure. The hobbits need to go back to the Shire after the One Ring is destroyed you can't end the story the instant the eagles show up. The hobbits need to stop the Scouring of the Shire, Sam needs to get married, Frodo needs to say goodbye and go to the undying lands, et cetera. Odysseus needs to return to his kingdom and compete in the competition. Ending it as soon as he reaches Greek land misses that return.
Solving the major conflict leads into the return which should have a emotional send-off with the same hooking power (and likely length) as the introduction to the major conflict.
Now, not everything has to follow the epic structure to absolute adherence, but there's a reason epic fantasy usually follows that structure.
@@Alex_Fahey It works in some stories. I feel like WoT ended appropriately.

I was sooo excited for this show and it turned to sooo much disappointment.
If there was ever any doubt, and there wasn’t, but this is the straw. I’ll be watching you guys and Disparu. Not one single stream to feed the beast that created this travesty.
On one hand; I hate hearing about the show, as I find it extremely depressing and I don’t want to support it in any way. But on the other; It needs to be talked about. It can’t be left to those people who only care about their agenda, and are willing to throw away logic and reality for it. I just hate that WoT is on their sacrificial altar.
This, I have been looking forward to.
I am grateful to the show for pushing you to make videos and encourage me to get into the books.
Currently on Book 11, there is some bloat for sure but the boring parts are not long enough to make me give up on the story unlike GoT books did.
I cant really pick a favourite character but Perins story is the most dissapointing to me after the Two Rivers arc.
you think there is so much bloat in the got books that you gave up..... where?
Perrin was so awesome in book four that he took book five off completely. The love triangle with whatsherface (not his wife, the other woman who would never take a hint) was completely unnecessary and dragged on forever, but his character arc ended (spoiler warning) perfectly.
I will note that Egwene gets "beaten" for lying about being an Aes Sedai to repay her Toh, as she is leaving the next morning. I don't know what book it is though.
lol i totally thought when you mentioned the representation you would have Nathan play the woman character and then have Claudia still there but as Perrin x3

Oh God, WoT still exists? They didn't cancel it and forget it was ever done in the first place? I made it to book four, giving me enough knowledge to know how mangled the show is, and then abandoned the series.
Next month: Brandon Sanderson blinks T-O-R-T-U-R-E in morse code as he announces again that Amazon has super duper not ever forced any NDA agreements on him!

I'll never again trust anything he says.
I just hit the half-way point of Book 5 and seriously want to know why the people doing this to the material have not been **put to the question** yet...
The List is long, but they're on it.
I’m still not sure whether it’ll turn into a porno or a soap opera. Probably soap opera since so many of the characters are ugly. Also, I’m beginning to think Rafe Judkins doesn’t know what he’s doing unless what he’s doing is ‘just make something.’
Why not both? But yeah, definitely a soap opera.

They had to get rid of Perrin's "toxic" masculinity
If I can turn the phrase they felt like they had to save Perrin and make him better by ridding the toxicity from him.
They are definitely doing the scene better than Amazon but crazy how bad the writing is.
They failed miserably. There is nothing more toxic than a male feminist that kills this wife.
