Yes, anyone who thinks of tears as a weakness is still but a child, holding on to bitter memories of a bruised knee while the other children point and laugh. The tears of an adult, however, require great courage- as one reveals what is most vulnerable in the face of fear and judgement. No easy feat; and _indeed_ a symbol of great strength.
Men who can cry are less likely getting a heart attack; true fact! That's why women have less heart attacks, because women cry more. Men, please cry, it is healthy. Tears of saddness and tears of joy, both!
Tears aren't weakness but sometimes I think people just want to get through to the other side without breaking down. Once those tears start, its hard to cut off the faucet. I didnt cry at my mother's funeral because I needed to make sure my mommy was squared away in her resting place. A woman told me that it would be time for tears later but you have to take care of business 1st. I took that to heart but I wasn't prepared for the 20 years of the "later" and STILL shedding tears. A mother is a heavy hitter to the heart and no matter what, losing her will always be an unmatched pain that exists to this day. Prayers to the Washington family. So many people definitely feel this pain. Prayers to all who have lost a loved one.

I didn’t cry at my mother’s funeral either, because she was 86, paralyzed, and ready to go. The day of her death I felt a soft Spring breeze flutter around me and off into the trees. I knew she was happy to be free. I ache for me sometimes because I miss her.

Lost my mom near ten years ago, she was 65, was with her as she passed, I was 32. Lost my dad when he was 50, and I was 5. The older I get the more I realize how young they were when cancer got them. Dad never got to see his kids grow up. Mom only got to see a 1 or 2 of her grandchildren. The pain of loss gets easier to deal with over time, but it never, ever goes away.

To me, Colbert is the best talkshow host. He's the one where you wish these conversations were longer for hours, because it's that good. My hat of too you, sir. Just like Denzel Washington, a master of your craft.
There's alot of decent actors that have come and gone but they broke the mold after Denzel. He is an all around true to himself, moral person that gives hope in a decaying society.
Never before have I've been able to laugh and cry with an actor on stage on a talk show. Part of the reason that Denzel was finally able to cry about his mother's passing was that Colbert has gone through the same thing and completely understands and enables people like himself to show how they truly feel. Respective for Denzel and his legendary career and skills and also Colbert's compassion.
I love Fallon, Kimmel, Corden, Meyers, Noah, Cohen, Maher, Stewart, Letterman... But when it comes to talk show hosts, Mr. Colbert is just on a different level..
I love him. Plus he is super hilarious. I can't even look at him sometimes without giggling. This showed him a different light and I have to say, my love grew some more. 💞
Love’m Hug’m. Amen! Mr. Washington, you may not be able to hug her anymore, but I believe our mothers continue to hug us from the other side. Two years later, and I still feel the blanket of Mother’s arms. True love, of course, is eternal… Peace to you and your family.
Lost my dad 40 years ago, and then my mom 10 years ago. There's not much sympathy for a fella who's made an orphan at 32. Watching the great man tear up in his mothers memory is...Oh boy...the pain of loss gets easier to deal with over time, but it never, ever goes away.
I lost my father, going on 12 years now. He was my daddy, my rock and my hero. I was "daddy's little girl" all the way up to age 28 (when I lost him). I am still waiting for that pain to get easier to deal with...😭💔
I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. I lost my Mom a few months ago at age 24. I never knew what sadness was before this part of my life. Your pain and grief are valid no matter your gender or age. I'm sorry you lost your Dad at such a young age, I can't imagine. You are in my prayers🙏🏾
I agree. I showed Glory to my 7th grade social studies class many years ago. When the lights came back on there wasn’t a dry eye in the room including my principal who was observing me that day. Simply powerful. God bless Denzel .
Wow….. as he sits in raw and true emotion, how I wish he had more time to just sit before his time slot was up. That is worthy of an entire hour.❤️🙏 ~c
Coming up the 4 year mark of losing my Mother waaaay before it was her time. I always get a bittersweet feeling of joy around this time cause I love the holiday time but it's also around the time I lost my mom. Miss her so much. Like Denzel said, "love em, hug" smh Hope everyone is in good spirits. Much love ✌🏾
So sorry for your deep loss. Moms just know through their star crossed paths with their own children that it's a Divine deed and they just know what words cannot ever say. Bless you Denzel and YOURS
I never had a real mother. It’s moving to see how much she meant to Denzel. That must be why he came out such a confident, & well rounded individual. “Glory.” One of the best movies, & performances I’ve ever seen.
Denzel has a heart of gold. Mother’s are so precious, Just thinking the other day, how Mom; always made sure we had a hot breakfast for a good start, before she left for work each day. Thank you.
Denzel is hands down-a major part of Gods blessing on all our vision,to recognize the poise and grace of what it truly means to be a remarkable Black man.I bet my skin on it.
I don't care who you are, sometimes grief or the emotions of a loss will wash over you from out of the blue. Honor and be grateful for your loved ones now❤
And this is one of the reasons that I love Denzel for the person he is. He has done some great things for humanity that not very many people know about as he keeps thing low profile. Just an amazing person to now show his vulnerability on this show but continue the interview. Straight up great person to mentor and model new adults
@@jlbueno0611 "I dont know what happens after death. But i do know the ones that love us will miss us alot". I watched that video of Keanu way too many times
It is beautiful to read everyone’s comments here. Those that have lost their mothers or those that just respect the loss of others. I too lost my mother in December of 2021. It was sudden and it cut deep. She had been struggling with an illness for over 8 years that left her needing 24/7 care. Although God called for her body to be in a “lesser state”, her mind was a sharp as ever. She was a powerful woman of God and would pray until Heaven got the news!!! This video, which I will come back to constantly, reminded me just how powerful a mother’s love is as a son. Thank you to everyone here and Denzel for reminding me of my mommy’s love for me tonight. God bless you all! ♥️😢
Lost my mother when I was 11 and my dad at 12. You never get over it, just find better ways to deal with it, but even then, you still get choked up. “Hug em, love em”, do not take it lightly. 💗
One of my moms favorite lines of one her favorite songs was "No hay amor mas verdadero que el de una madre" which means "there ain't no true love more then one of a mother" miss you mom 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
STEPHEN COLBERT. One of the greatest interviewers of our time. How does he keep it so real in this famously frivolous genre?night WOW! This conversation with Denzel Washington is EVERYTHING, start to finish. They're both phenomenal men. Thank you gentlemen. So much heart and integrity.
Denzel looks like he is really going through some stuff right now. I do know that sometimes if you don't grieve (cry, scream etc.) when it first happens your pent up emotions come out at the most inopportune times. I wish him well and hope he heals. It can be creepy the first time you realize you're no longer "someone's child". Even though you are an independent adult that empty space is shocking.
I totally agree. I remember grieving the same way. My mom and I were very close. I didn't cry at her funeral either but every time since then when I see a man get emotional about losing his mother, it gets to me.
I had a co-worker ask me if I had mothers day planned. I looked at him and asked, "Why?" "You have a mother," he said. "No, sir," I said, "I don't." He didn't dare speak to me for the rest of the week.
@@michaelfinlay6341 sadly adults who are fortunate enough to still have a parent don't understand the sadness that we go through every time we're reminded that they're gone. Mother's Day is widely celebrated but it can be extremely sad and a triggering moment of grief for "Motherless Children" regardless of age.
@@reggiearmstrong6417 if and when it happens to you again just know you are not alone. It happens and it's important to let it out. I have a family member who never grieved over the death of his sister. To this day he's become a bitter hermit because he can't allow himself to grieve. He is too concerned about "keeping his emotions in check".
I’ll never forget when it was just me and my mom when she was working full time as a single mother. 2 bedroom house just her and I. Those are the best memories I hold on to the most. We had nothing but our hearts were full. I am now 26 and she’s been gone for 2 years and there nothing I want more than to be back with her in that 2 bedroom house. Love you momma.

Little did Denzel know, Colbert has experienced his own family tragic moments, losing his father and 2 brothers, in a tragic plane accident, when he was 10, and his mother in 2013. Denzel's statement from heart hug em, love em, is resoundingly heartwarming
Mr.Washington was tying so hard not to cry and we are crying with you. He is one of the best role models among all actors. We are praying for you and your family. We know he is in pain because of the volume of his voice which men tend to speak louder, when they are grieving or get extremely quiet. The passing of parents is hard and emotions vary.and Denzel truly made his mother and (father) proud of him. He's definitely a credit to mankind and the movie industry. We love you and our prayers are with you.. May continue to bless you and your family I am happy to learn Mr.Washington has movie coming out this month . I hope our theater will be open
Grief visits us unexpectedly when and where it wants, after the loss of a loved one. I think especially our parents. That's what it has been for me, it's been 7 years and I still get moments of great sadness and miss my Mom so much. Grief is so complex and strong, there's no controling it. My heart goes with you Mr Denzel.♥️🙏
I know that the usual late night talk show format is two guests, but when you have on someone as prolific as Denzel, you should just make them the only guest. Stephen was really making some breakthroughs in this interview. I feel like it was weirdly cathartic for Mr. Washington, too. Would have been interesting to see where they could have gone with another 5-7 minutes. Stephen should do more single-guest shows.
Lost my mom to Cancer 11 years ago. Still hurts like it was yesterday. I tell people that the pain never goes away but with time you learn to manage the pain better.
Denzel is a man I admire, although there were rumors that I had some rejection towards Mexicans but I as a Mexican have a lot of admiration and respect for this man and I feel that it is one of those people who don't have to say something just give him a big hug.
This was hard to watch, especially if you know what he was going through. Funny he said he didn't cry at the funeral. But now I think the realization that she is gone hit him, he couldn't stop crying. That's real for a lot of people. Man of integrity. Prayers for him and his family. Continue to do the great work you do.
Lost my mother in September 2020. 11 years after losing my father. Both to cancer. 34 years old and alone, truly, for the first time. It’s hard, but you can grow around it and from it. Love you mum, best friend I ever had. Hopefully will see you again on the next journey!

Did you forget O'Brien???
Love’m Hug’m. Amen!
Mr. Washington, you may not be able to hug her anymore, but I believe our mothers continue to hug us from the other side. Two years later, and I still feel the blanket of Mother’s arms. True love, of course, is eternal… Peace to you and your family.
I'm sorry for Denzel Washingtons loss. Loved seeing him. Thank you Stephen for another amazing show.
My favorite actor, wise, intelligent on and off the camera
he should have gotten 10 Oscars for Glory alone - what a movie - what performance. Its a shame that this movie is little known nowadays.
I agree. I showed Glory to my 7th grade social studies class many years ago. When the lights came back on there wasn’t a dry eye in the room including my principal who was observing me that day. Simply powerful. God bless Denzel .
first time i see him emotional outside of his work, sending him prayers
Wow….. as he sits in raw and true emotion, how I wish he had more time to just sit before his time slot was up. That is worthy of an entire hour.❤️🙏

Pretty sure that was one of Colbert's best interviews ever. Denzel rocks. Period!
Coming up the 4 year mark of losing my Mother waaaay before it was her time. I always get a bittersweet feeling of joy around this time cause I love the holiday time but it's also around the time I lost my mom. Miss her so much.
Like Denzel said, "love em, hug" smh
Hope everyone is in good spirits.
Much love ✌🏾
One of my all time favourite actors ! So natural and talented.
Stephen lost his father and two brother in a plane crash when he was 10. Don't let that smile and laughter fool you
Denzel has nothing to prove; at this point he’s just having fun. I love him.
So sorry for your deep loss. Moms just know through their star crossed paths with their own children that it's a Divine deed and they just know what words cannot ever say. Bless you Denzel and YOURS
The difference between a good actor and a great actor is how genuine they are.
Thank you.
And a daughter's true love as well. I lost mine in 2013 and have never been the same.
Thank God for his Mother giving the world Denzel Washington. How fortunate we truly are. Rest in Heaven Mrs Washington 🙏
Denzel and Andrew Garfield have me crying more in one interview than I have in a long while 😭
And Keanu
@@jlbueno0611 "I dont know what happens after death. But i do know the ones that love us will miss us alot". I watched that video of Keanu way too many times
Yah, I saw them. Very emotional. I almost cried.
@@jayu9642 yeah I forgot about Keanu ❤️
You can tell he was ready to break down. What an awesome man. He's brought us so much joy into our lives.
Hearts in the chat for Denzel's mother
I gotta call my mom more often...thank you Denzel for sharing such beautiful words.
Please do because that permanent feeling of them being no more is a pain you walk through for the rest of your life. It truly hurts.
@@Here4TheMusic765 I know what you mean. I wish so bad I could talk to my mom one more time.
@@NicoleAZ145 me too 😔
Awww, I've never seen him cry before. It probably all just hit him tonight. Sometimes tears are delayed. But I love this man do much!!! ❤❤❤
He had a scene in JOHN Q where he went deep, a few tears fell, he wanted to stop but the camera rolled. They kept it. Love him. 😆😊
God bless your mama may she rest in peace Denzel we love you brother
God bless you Denzel, your family and your mumma god rest her soul
I lovw how Stephen always gives space for people to express grief and love for those they have lost.
Lost my mother when I was 11 and my dad at 12. You never get over it, just find better ways to deal with it, but even then, you still get choked up. “Hug em, love em”, do not take it lightly. 💗
Thank you for sharing your story. Sending you so much love Brotha 🙏🏽❤
One of my moms favorite lines of one her favorite songs was "No hay amor mas verdadero que el de una madre"
which means "there ain't no true love more then one of a mother"
miss you mom
🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
Denzel is so great. When he speaks he thinks first and lets his heart lead. a Good man.
Mothers are the first teachers to their children. Thanks so much Denzel Washington for honoring your amazing mom

😢
My first born son is addicted to drugs and he is your age.... hurts like Hell! I remember how tight we were when the 2 of us we're in the same situation as you and your Mom!❤ He is my heart and I pray he finds his way back to me before I leave the earth🙏🏾 Great comment..... blessings and may she rest in peace ❤

I pray for his safe return home💕💓💕
so, so, so, sorry for your loss
😞✨🌹🌹✨😞
@@missartis9002 thank you so much🙏🏾🙏🏾 I'm praying that is the case... I miss and love him so much, praying he finds his way out of darkness🙏🏾. Every late night call or knock I start to shake wondering if another overdose is the final one... it's a hurting feeling and constant worry... I wonder if though it's an illness if he understands what it's doing to ME? 💔
Little did Denzel know, Colbert has experienced his own family tragic moments, losing his father and 2 brothers, in a tragic plane accident, when he was 10, and his mother in 2013. Denzel's statement from heart hug em, love em, is resoundingly heartwarming
He made me tear up. He surely did do his mother proud.
Thank you, Denzel.
You inspired me to tell my Mum how much she means to me while she's still with me.
Love to you and your family.
I love how he’s never afraid to show his humanity. Such a beautiful moment.
May continue to bless you and your family
I am happy to learn Mr.Washington has movie coming out this month .
I hope our theater will be open
I wish I could give Denzel a huge hug. he is so strong and his mom is so proud, no doubt about that.
Wow! This is so powerful! Denzel Washington love for his mother touched everyone.
My son is my hardest child out of my two. But my love for him, nothing I can ever explain.
Denzel is The BEST because he embraces the artist's duty to fully live His emotions that he may be a medium to Ours.
Beautifully said.

I love this man! So sorry for his loss. What a beautiful display of love and emotion.
Lost my mother in September 2020. 11 years after losing my father. Both to cancer. 34 years old and alone, truly, for the first time. It’s hard, but you can grow around it and from it. Love you mum, best friend I ever had. Hopefully will see you again on the next journey!
So heartfelt, touching, lovely words - brought tears to my eyes - she is with him always 🙏🏾x
These two are so good together. RIP to Denzels Mum.
My condolences Mr. Washington. She seemed like a radiant queen who raised a brilliant king.
The love of your heart and soul for her shone through your tears. Remember her always. Respect.
A Mother's Love is EVERYTHING! THANK YOU Mr. Washington for being so transparent 🙏🏽
"Hug 'Em, Love "Em." Great powerful words said by D.W.
He brought tears to my eyes as so too believe love between mother and son is profound!!!!
Colbert has become THE person to speak to celebs about loss and grief in a way that helps the viewers in a deep way. ❤👑
You can tell a bloke just having an honest chat. Strikes me as an actor that didn't get carried away with that Hollywood culture
These two MEN gets my love and support ALWAYS ♥️♥️🙏🏽🙏🏽
