cant help but noticing how he manages to honor his mother, his dad, his brother, steven, lin manuel miranda, all his supporters, and the musicians just in this short segment. absolutely a class act and a master of gratitude.

He comes across as a very genuine, kind, gentle person. A human being. Someone who is aware of their privilege and influence, and uses it for good. Increasingly, and particularly in Hollywood, that's a rare thing. Keanu has a similar energy.

Just wanted to say I really liked the way Colbert handled Garfield's answer on his grief. Looked him in the eyes, thanked him for sharing, held his hand with both his own. And that's enough, because the pain they feel is their own, and you are not there to say you know it, because you don't. You only have to show that you are listening, that you are there for them. Brilliant.

You never know what reaction you will get for bearing your soul as he did, and even though most people will come back with the kind response that this audience did, there are a lot that wouldn't have reacted so kindly. Andrew is strong to be so open in front of so many people. He had me crying because I think I my beautiful mother who has read the Bible twice in her life. When she started getting to the point she knew she wouldn't be here to many years ahead was when she read the Bible a second time. She knew every word and meaning in the Bible with a 6th grade education and I can hardly pronounce many of words and the understanding with a full course education. My grandfather taught himself how to read and studied the Bible and taught this to his kids. He never went to school and was a brilliant person in reading and writing. He read many different books on religion and listened to tapes of a well known person who studied the Bible. I wish my grandfather were here to speak to people about what he learned because we would all believe in God and know he really exist. I believe Andrew is a Christian and by this his pain from losing his mother gives him hope that he will see her again in God's time to call us home.

The conversations end, but your father is woven into the fibres of your being, so you can't lose him. Even when his influence on you ripples out to others around you. And then in turn, to those people who pass on some of his essence to effect more people, and so on... The emptiness of loss of the relationship is the contrasting shadow that highlights all those bright moments that you have gained in your years of knowing him. And those memories, his love for you, are yours to keep; the smile through your tears for those personal precious moments. Even as the powerful waves of grief lessen, you can smile that secret smile of knowing, with gratitude for such a man, such a father, as part of your life, and part of who you are.

Andrew Garfield pointing directly at Stephen and Jon saying "You sow up our wounds" is among the most powerful, necessary, and fulfilling gems in late night history. And what Stephen and Andrew does in their own respective arts has literally sown up millions of wounds across the world. What a time to be alive. 💙

I lost a beloved pet of almost 16 years, and I fight daily to remember the good times and not cry. It's not the passing that is bad, but it's the missing her daily that is what hurts. That's the secret. You learn to hope it stays with you because it's just the enduring love that was never expressed. You become friends with pain when you experience real loss, because that's your only remaining connection to those who've passed. Andrew nailed this on the fly with the most beautifully articulated perspective on it, and I hope he knows how empowering that was for anyone and everyone who's seen this.

This is a moment of rare connection: raw emotions laid bare, listeners hanging on to his every word, sharing in his grief. Like Andrew says, art truly “sews up the wounds.” His portrayal of Jonathan Larson in TTB was magnificent. What a talented actor and beautiful soul.

I didn't know he lost his mother. What a wonderful expression he's found in saying that grief is the unexpressed love that stays behind.

The way Andrew speaks about people he loves is so tragically beautiful.

Andrew has a real heart and it shines through in all of his roles. I can’t speak for the deceased but I can say with confidence his mom must be proud of him and was blessed to have a family like theirs.

I told my Mom every time I spoke with her how much I love her. I guess I still have lots of unexpressed love because I cry every time her name comes up. Love you Mom and thank you Andrew Garfield for this beautiful take on grief!
