Found the outboard engine to be full of salt so we flushed it with salt off so the owners wouldn't have the engine overheat! How often do you flush your motor?
every time it comes of the water
@@duanethumudo3967 exactly what we preach!
Never buy a salt water out board.
@@Harlanmote We'd love to hear why not? What are your thoughts?
@@WillFixThatVideo is exhibit A. People are lazy and uneducated.
I carry a piece of weed wacker string and use it to clean out the pisser because sand and salt gather at exit fitting on the motor. It is flexible and doesn’t poke holes works great
Love this idea …. Thanks for sharing!
I use weed wacker string too - also, when storing the boat on land or even if you leave it in the water I leave a pipe cleaner stick in the pee hole to prevent insects, etc from entering …then remove before use!
False information son
Can of compressed air works for me, but I probably be throwing some weed whip line in my boats!
Same recommendation I was gonna give. 200# mono works also but not as well. I keep a peice of stainless steel filler rod and about 4ft of weedeater line in my boat.
Needs a new impeller!!
Yes thanks also needed an acid wash!
Use barnacle buster! Works great from what I hear.
@@WillFixThat have you ever run vinegar through it , try it once every few months
@@unclewill sounds reasonable… white vinegar?
@@WillFixThatyup. Regular or cleaning strength. Just flush with water after.
I bought a motor from a guy that thought it was locked up it wasn't he was trying to start it in gear he had only ran it in the great salt lake two times this motor only had 3 hour's on it 2012 fifteen horse four stroke it wasn't pissing like that after I got it started and flushed it out it was clogged up with salt I have been running it for 5 year's now without a problem best motor iv ever had
Sounds like our motor it was clogged with salt!
I have an 1962 75 hp Evenrude.
The old engines did not pee like that.
The water splatters out the Exhaust & after about 5 minutes when.the thermostat opens the water will gush out.
I have a buzzer & light that alarms if engine over heats.
My voltage regulator is not on the engine, so it will not overheat due to lack of water.
My water pump housing is not plastic with a steel sleeve - it is solid steel.
Mine is first year of Selectric Shift that I didn't trust so I made it direct drive.
I use premium gas mixed with Pennzoil marine Semi synthetic 2 stroke oil 50:1.
I use Champion J8C spark plugs.
I run/fish on Lake Erie in fresh water.
I purchased boat, motor & trailer almost 30 years ago & it still runs good at minimum expense.
The boat has max speed of 29mph
Nobody asked
They don’t build stuff like they used too 🥴
Hmm 🤔
I just got one. Guy did the electronic ignition. 😮. , starlight 75. On ugly boat with big 1957 chevy wings. Lol 😮

Compressed air up the pee tube works. And I flush mine with Salt Away and I still get this issue.
Salt away worked for us …. But another viewer recommended RYDLYME Marine to us today! It’s in the comments below do we don’t get the credit! Maybe try it. 👍🤞
I've had the water port clogged up by dirt / mud dobbers before. Had to poke a skinny screw driver through it to break it up. Those wasp are so annoying.
Our issue ended up being full of salt.
Impeller burned!! Need replace new impeller
We did replace the impeller & flushed the unit! Thanks for watching.
Wrong
@@pickledcottoncandy no that’s not wrong that’s the truth!
@@WillFixThat what I meant was just because there's no tell tale doesn't automatically mean it's the water pump. More often than not, It's trash in the line. Sometimes they won't piss on a hose either and have to be dunked. Don't assume it's a water pump until you've investigated the other routes first.
@@pickledcottoncandyI agree. Always start simple (and usually cheap) and work your way up.
My buddies engine on his pontoon had dirt dobbers clogging his up. Thankfully it was a rather quick fix.
That’s is easy ours just took a bit more! It was full of salt.
My old 140 rude had a mud dobber clog up mine.
Quick fix
👍
@@johnthonig1692 use tape to cover it when not in use.
I get those all the time.
It’s plugged somewhere, might as well replace impeller too!! The joys of owning a boat👍😀
We did replace the impeller and it still didn’t fix our problem! We used salt away to flush and it did the trick.
Ahh salt!! Not a problem here in Michigan, but I bought a small outboard last year I had to take apart and dig out sand!! It was used in the marshes for duck hunting👍
@@gillgetter3004 Yes salt is bad down here .... we get sand in lots of motors because people like to pull up on the sandbars! 🤣
This is what happens when you have to much money…you don’t give a shit till it’s not working right. Flush it out every time you get out of the water. Especially salt water…
Yes that’s what we tell our clients!
Dirt dobbers or pump impeller is what I usually find... Could be oxidation also... I try to spray them full of WD 40 when they are set up to protect the hoses and impeller.
Ours was full of salt.
Check the impeller in the lower unit. If it's bad it won't pee right or at all.
It was changed & still had issues ended up being plugged with salt!
Weed eater line is good when it's that part of the system...several engines I had it's the mud that gets in those veins where it travels before getting to that last part..and the salt here got broke free...I still wish I could fix things more by myself...everytime I try bolts nuts parts are left on the ground lol
Lol keep at it Bert! 👍
Welcome to the world of boating
@@fasteddie7997
B= bust
O= out
A= another
T= thousand
Ill assume that you checked/changed the impeller. But the thermostat might be plugged up with salt an corrosion, sounds like it was a saltwater motor
Full of salt 👍
This doesn’t have to do with the outboard, but if you have kids, and use that swim platform and ladder, switch the hardware and put it on the right side of the transom. Will still go over the trim tabs. This way, you can watch the kids as you coast past them (even reach out to slow them down more) all the way to the platform.(away from the motor) Young kids? Older adults, change the cheap 2 step ladder to a 4 step folding stairs. Much safer.
The owners rarely use this boat ..... they don't have kids but its a great idea! Agree 4 stairs is much safer.
Just had this issue with mine, had dried up mud in the lines, took them off and ran a metal wire through them to clear the lines and all is good now. Could have burned up the motor, thank goodness I pay attention to that pee stream every time I start it.
Our issue was salt.
Just had this same issue. Had mud hornets get in my telltale
Ours was salt!!
I would have guessed impeller
Most likely the impeller dry rotted enough to where once you started it the ears broke off the impeller and is now clogging the exit tube for the water , so its not pulling any water and its mostly clogged, drop lower unit after draining oil from it, then the impeller assembly will be on the top of the lower unit
Great ideas Chad … it ended up being full of salt!
NEVER EVER run your outboard motor without water
Right on!
Had same issue with '88 90hp V4 Evinrude AFTER changing impeller after outboard sat for 2 years in garage. Solution was to remove foot a second time and back flow all the coolant passager. Reassemble and all good.
Your lucky …
Break out another thousand that spells boat😂😂😂
We say TEN
Had the same problem with my 02 Yamaha. Turned out to be the impeller on the water pump in the lower unit. They're made of rubbery plastic and over time they break. If you find that's the problem, make sure you get every little piece before you replace it and close it back up and start it. All it takes is a tiny piece to get sucked up and clog it good.
Ours ended up being salt!
Did you get guys check the impeller first?
Yes we did! 👍
Happened to me in the middle of the lake a few weeks ago. Took the shroud off and all I had on me was some 100lb mono, thank god a few pokes into the brass nipple was all it took to breakup whatever was in there but what a crappy feeling when your looking at open water and just a trolling motor for power.
Yikes that stinks … they were lucky cause they limped in on one motor! They were like 12 miles out when it happened!
Had a buddy who ran his boat in the gulf every couple weekends every year. Dude never hooked a hose up to it. One day he overheated and called me asking what to do. Told him to pull apart the engine and wire brush every cooling passage until he sees metal again.
Omg 😱 people wonder why!
Biggest problem I’ve found with earmuffs. Not enough pressure do to water passing by the muffs themselves. I would back it into the water and try again. Muffs are faulty sometimes, and nothing duplicates the pressure of being submerged in water
Problem was it was full of salt!
New water pump on a newly looking engine. But they are made out of the rubber inners. Don't take much sand or dirt to kill it. Plus when sitting up out the water for months at a time the rubber dry rots ...
Ours was full of salt …. Ended up flushing it twice!
Just got both of my merc 2 strokes 8 and 15hp, to start this year and both were plugged at the tip of the pee hole. One had a big fat white maggot in it that wiggled when i poked it.
Yikes maggot sounds terrible 🙈 cover pee hole with colored tape!
I had overheating problems with my Evinrude E-Tech 115 for the past 3 years. First I changed the spring in the cooling system that makes the engine run hotter to burn off extra fuel when running half throttle, then last year both thermostats and this year the impeller. That’s just about everything. And I’ve only run in fresh water and only have 138 hours in it
Wow that seems like a lot to go wrong with low hours!
@@WillFixThat what pisses me off is that they don’t make Evinrudes anymore to use the lemon law and try and get a replacement
@@Retired88M Yes sucks sorry about that man ....
U need a impeller it's probably worn out
Yes thank you!
Mudd dobbers, always carry a length of heavy weedeater line on board. While engine is running you can clear that passage with trimmer line. Works line a champ.
Ended up being build up of salt!
Had my motor rebuilt, used it twice then stored it for the winter. Checked it out in the spring and the water wasn't coming out. Somehow a spider go into there and made a nest and plugged everything up.
Wow … our issue was salt!
Just had to replace my impeller … boats love em hate em they bring us joy
I know the good & bad memories 🤣
WoW! Literally this happend to me yesterday. Hadn't used the boat for 6 months, the warning lights didn't come on. Took a spin around the marina, looked back at the motor and a very weak stream was coming out. Scared the hell out of me as I slowly returned to my slip. I flushed the motor with Salt-Away and let it run through (motor off) for about 25 minutes. Now I have a normal flow. Scared me though.
That’s exactly what we had to do to this motor! Glad you discovered no pee early!
Thanks for the reminder of why I kayak fish.
Something to be said about that 🤣
The impeller is smoked. They don't like to run dry. If it came apart, check for pieces of it upstream.
Impeller was already changed it was full of salt!
You probably have small chunks of oyster shell or debris that have been sucked in and managed to make its way through the impeller to the P line. Replace the line leading from the impeller to the exhaust coming out or get you something abrasive and run it through the pee hole and continue to work it back-and-forth, and the debris will work itself out. You may also want to put some salt away inside of the intake and it helps to break down salt chunks.
Yes full of salt … we flushed it!
Acid flush and impeller pretty easy to tell 😂
Yes flush definitely
Plugged up with pieces of impellar😂😂😂
Salt.
In-laws had a pair of Suzuki’s that were full of salt. Bad enough to where a local shop took the power-heads completely apart. It cost a ton of money and the shop did an amazing job. But my in-laws where upset at Suzuki because the marina flushed the engines every time the boat was taken out and put on the rack. Turned out yes they did flush them every time, but not long enough for the thermostat to open to circulate the flush water around the engine.
🥴 ugh that sucks! Our clients was full of salt too!
One or two pills of flomax should clear it up, just a slightly enlarged prostate
Can you write that script? 🤣
Lmmfao
Never use reverse in skinny water. Hopefully it’s not something major
It ended up being full of salt!
Salt deposits around the coolant system. Usually, the car washes near the fishing spot have hoses one can use to run water through it. Take a few minutes to run fresh water to get rid of all that salt. If you wait until you get home the salt will weld the thermostat shut. Always make sure the coolant and oil alerts are working. Sorry to go on and on. Glad you got to the problem. Best of luck, be safe and keep them lines tight.
@@anglers48 thanks for going on and on people need to learn and not just hearing it from us! We constantly tell our clients the same simple easy steps to take to help with maintaining a boat!
Sometimes bees fill it with mud as well or it could be an impeller. If you use the muffs to force water in it, but drop the lower end into a big barrel of water to see if it sucks water in.
If the impeller is shot, you're still forcing water through under pressure.
Was full of salt!
I see ur problem. It's written on the side of the engine cover!😂
Omg 😱 LOL
The sound of geo
Metro engine, I love it
Thanks.
We had to replace our thermostat on a Mercury 150. Fixed it for us
Ours was full of salt.
Keep a small piece of wire in your boat . Something fairly rigid like a piece welding wire . Sand is bad about accumulating in the nozzle of those pissers . Some times if you run aground and it stops pissing , back down on it hard . That works better if your dealing with grass
Yeah this is our customers boat … so we are just trying to work out their kinks!
My outboard wasn't peeing. Changed impeller, thermostat checked lines and water jacket. Still no water on "muffs". Figured out it's a dry sump and had to put it in a bucket so the water level was the same as the impeller would be in the lower unit.
Ours was full of salt!
Needs a new impeller
Yes we did that and still had the issue.
Was gonna say it’s probably full of salt…. Till I saw top comment 😂
My Suzuki 115 four stock hasn’t pissed for years never had a problem
Oh wow do you rinse it every time?
The boat needs to be in the water ha ha
Not really …. Full of salt!
When I store my boat for the winter I always cover the inlet on the lower unit with electrical tape and the peepee outlet with a piece of electrical tape. Bugs, ants or dirt dobbers can't infiltrate the cooling system
That’s a great idea!
I’m having the same issue with my Honda. Mine is still cooling the engine. All new water pump set up but no peeing. What did you guys find
Our was full of salt!
Peeing is just a 'tell tale" but if you verify that you have circulation its not going to cause an issue... BTW some large diameter mono line or weed trimmer line kept on the boat is a nice tool
Yes great ideas. It was full of salt!
Impeller is toast. Boat maintenance 101
It was changed ended up being full of salt!
Well that pointy thing at the bottom of the engine you see that is missing all the paint You just might Try keeping it out of the mud and sand and the tell take won’t clog up with sea shells and rocks . I doubt it salt related
Water jacket was of of salt … our client rarely uses the boat!
Zip tie works good to unclog it while engine is running it will clear it and will work
Salt clogged it!
@@WillFixThat yea a lot of times the salt dries up in there into crust and a zip tie with the engine running breaks it lose
@@DLeopoldi914 it was too impacted with salt … but we got it after about 30 mins.
When your outboard is not used for sometime your impeller blades will stay bent permanently. That greatly reduces the amount of water your pump will pump.
E changed the impeller but it was sooo full of salt!
I was always told don’t rev the motor when using the ear muffs with a garden hose because the water pump on the motor sucks more than the hose can provide and can burn up the pump that way.
Our issue was salt?
@@WillFixThat glad it was an easy fix in that case. Just was something I always kept in mind when we had boats
@@stevecourville199 thanks for sharing
My new merc 200 pro xs doesn't piss water off muffs unless you tape the two holes on the front of the head of the lower unit.
Ours was full of salt!
Is there a thermostat that only opens after its up to temp.
My friends 250 Suzuki never pees until its hot. Or up to temp.
Interesting…
Impeller is damaged , dry starting will damage impeller always have water hose hook up to prevent dry start on impeller
Impeller was changed … it was full of salt!
Every single time it comes out. I do it when the engines are still hot and the salt inside the motors have not had the time to dry yet. Same engines since 1997!
Well our salt was dry!!
Plugged by tiny dort wasp or silt.
If it doesn't start working after clearing it. The rubber water pump is hard, cracked, and worn out

Put tape over the hole!
It's a Suzsucki..... get a Yammy. 😅😂
Think you’re on to something 👍
That's an easy fix! Been there before as well as helping a dozen or so people who had a similar problem. It's usually 1 of 3 things guaranteed! Just troubleshoot till you have isolated the causes..
Salt
My Yamaha 4 stroke doesn’t show out the tell tale off muffs. Some times you have to back it in at the dock and bingo.
Interesting ... makes it harder to tell then.
We had same issue, muffs don't produce enough pressure, as soon as it's in water it was fine.
"Troubleshooting" it's obvious it can only be one other thing. Pull lower unit and replace impeller.
The impeller was already changed …. It was full of salt!
I think I need to learn more about outboard engines, switch from mower to boat engines.
Or both 😆
@@WillFixThat you really don't unlearn how to do something, I was a Auto mechanic for many years, cars just got to be computerised I gave up, started driving and on working on mowers. Now those are getting computer's, outbound engines have a lot more parts, but it's a engine transmission and drive line, can't be very difficult to figure out
@@kennethwoolever5054 some of these outboards you also need a computer to read codes when you have issues!
Some older engines require you change the water pump impeller every 12 months . I did mine every 18 months . Also you should freshwater flush your engine everytime you use it . Also newer engines may not require replacing impeller as often . Consult your owners manual or ask the service dude . If you have to use weed trimmer line to unclog the pee hole you aren't flushing long enough or at all .
After I wash the boat I flush the engine. Let the motor run at idle while you dry off the inside of your boat . By the time you spent wiping stuff down that should be adequate time of flushing .
Our owners hadn’t flushed it was full of salt!
Vet impeller in lower unit replaced if not overheating will happen.if you put in water and it won't stay running it's impeller.
Impeller was already changed it was full of salt!
I would pull the lower unit just cause and rebuild the water pump. At least every 2 to 3 years I do mine unless my water pressure gauge says other wise. Meaning lower pressure than normal and my pick up is clean and clear and all water ports are free and clear. Always flush your motor after running it in salt water heck I even do it after taking it to the lake. Soon Myers boat shop in Victoria Texas will be open for business. It will be one of the best and most reliable boat shops in South Texas. Long line of family and friends who I grew up around that have shops and are retiring. Learned from some of the best boat and motor gurus in South Texaa.
Good for you sounds like you have experience! We changed the pump but ended up being full of salt!
You need more water available to get all jackets full. A large bucket or in water run.
Thanks issue was salt.
Replace engine cover with one that says Mercury. It will run better than it did when it was new.
Lol that’s too funny! 🤣
Check thermostats they are probably stuck motor that size should have one in each head
One would hope!
Your impeller pump is bad or has a couple reversed fins I had that problem it would pee but it wasn’t strong an I pulled the lower unit an the impeller had 3 reversed fins
We replaced & still issues discovered it was full of salt!
Along of times it's salt build up but us okies have problems with dirt dogger wasp they build nest out of mid inside them small lines if mine doesn't pee I take a bIling wire an run it a about 4 inches inside I always hit the nest then it breaks up n comes out peeing
Ours was full of salt!
Uh-oh looks like you going to have to get a new water pump

Not good to rev motor up running on muffs from what I’ve heard. Wonder if impeller needs done
Impacted with salt, happens a lot down here in Key West
Never heard it referred to as a tattletale. Always a tell tale. 🤷🏻♂️
Mistake when taking etc on video … you are right!

Yikes heard that a few times one guy said he tapes the hole every year.
Q-20 OR W40 works perfect, Mine was the same and Q-20 solve the problem.
We used salt away to flush 2x
The impeller is most likely bad..If the weep hole was clogged most likely it fried the impeller..There just made out of a hard rubber it doesn't take much to screw them up...I've seen them go bad just because somebody dry started there motor for 60 seconds...
After more troubleshooting it was full of salt.
One time we had a dirt dobber fill our hole with dirt in attempt to make a nest
Yup that can happen.
The rubber fins of the water pump became hardened after about one year and break off ; not pumping enough water into the engine to keep it cool enough .??

Always use a barrel. The water pressure will make that pisser lie.
Our issue was a build up of salt.
