  • I was excited to convert my Suzuki 4 Stroke Outboard motor from a 9.9 HP to a 20 HP. They are basically the same motor with 2 different parts. So, I ordered them and went to work getting them installed. Couple tricky parts, but it went smoothly for the most part and I gained about 9 mph!
    Parts List:
    Flame Arrester - 13710-89L00 Approx $10
    Silencer Seal - 13832-89L00 Approx $8
    ECM - 33930-89L20 Approx $440
    My Main Camera - amzn.to/3t47EOL
    My External Mic - amzn.to/34D3Ydf
    My Action Cam - amzn.to/3MHckSh
    My Other Action Cam - amzn.to/3tTcwVR
    Chest Mount and Hat Mount - amzn.to/3i1ai1l
    My Shoulder Mount - amzn.to/37tc1dX
    My Portable Charger - amzn.to/3w0Y5BP
    My Boat Mount Stick/Charger - amzn.to/3CGqTBc

      We used to do that with a 6hp Mercury cover on a 15hp Mercury, just to fool the police, my little Zodiac Cadet 310 used to go over 50kph with that 15hp Mercury, the whole boat and motor combination weighed like 90kg with a full 24 liter tank.

      Try putting the original control module in and test the speed and acceleration just by removing the air restrictor.
      ? ? ? Will it run a little bit better or a little worse or alot worse?.

      GM used to limit the throttle valve opening angle on some cars when they had corporate edicts on the amount of power for that size car. One of the first buff-book recommendations was to have someone fully depress the accelerator pedal while you stared down through the top of the carb - of course with the engine off and air cleaner lid removed. If you saw the throttle plate wasn't going vertical, you could look for what was stopping it short and remove that restriction.

    My question to you and anyone in the group who completed the upgrade to either 15 or 20hp is whether a noticable increase in power was noted at low to mid RPMs, or only at the high end because the WOT max was increased? Seems like you should be able to get quite a bit more out of that with higher pitch. I have a Johnson 25 and I am running a 10.3X13 pitch. I can run about 30 mph by myself and 27mph fully loaded with two people. It's a 14 ft fully decked, a lot of gear, and 2 trolling motor batteries as well. I saw some of your other comments that it's common for people to run the even smaller 9 pitch but that seems like quite the difference from my 13. I guess I'm not sure what the diameter is either, or what rpm you are turning. Might just be a big difference from 2 to 4 stroke as well.

    • @Dark30Outdoors
      @Dark30Outdoors  Рік тому +3

      I do think the 2 strokes turn a higher rpm. I used a temporary ob before this Suzuki came in. It was a 9.9 2 stroke that had a carb mod to 15 hp. It got me to 18 mph. I'm really happy with this set up. I never have to worry about hitting the redline and get pretty good speed out of it. Plus I can use it on 10 HP restricted lakes with no issues.

  • @williamstreet4304
    @williamstreet4304 28 днів тому +6

    The reason this works for Suzuki is because the 9.9 and the 20 are the same motor with different intake controls. They both weigh 108 pounds in the long shaft version. But other manufacturers have different approaches. Example Tohatsu offers a 9.9 that weighs the same as their 20. They also offer a 9.8 that is significantly lighter. The 9.8 weighs 80 pounds. If you are frequently using a portable on a dinghy from a larger vessel, the difference in lifting 80 pounds or 108 pounds is significant. It magnifies when mounting to a dinghy in a rolling anchorage. I only post this to highlight the differences between the 2 brands. I have a Tohatsu 4hp on a small boat and a Yammy 175 on a slightly bigger boat. I don't own a Suzy.
