Every citrus plant not native to the Dallas Texas climate will suffer some stress. Placing them indoors, rapping them with a cover, or adding lights too keep them warm are all ways to minimize the stress. I have found that for me keeping them in pots and transport them indoors in the winter works best. However, I have seen a couple of citrus do well planted in ground on the south facing wall of a home.
Have you thought about putting them in the ground and then putting Christmas lights around them?

Where did you purchase your trees from
I get my trees a Home Depot or Walmart, which ever is cheaper. I look for strong trunks and dark green leaves.
Did you water while in garage?
Yes, about every 3rd or 4th day. If the soil was dry I would water lightly. Potted plants require less water during winter.
