But close to LaGuardia Airport it used to smell really bad when it was low tide.

That structure you paddled underneath was part of a former drawbridge that was replaced with a fixed bridge. At one time, much taller vessels used Flushing Creek .

nice trip, it's right outside my neighborhood of Flushing. Flushing Creek is very dirty where you were but thanks to gentrification the developers are looking for ways to clean up. If you want to know how dirty it is, go to the public water front behind Skyview center. Beyond the floating trash net it connects to the two lakes in Flushing Meadow Corona Park, but much of the waterway is covered and connected with culverts, you would have to dive and swim into.
@TechExploresNYC Thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting. That Skyview Center area must be back beyond the area of the floating boom I couldn't get beyond. I'm guessing there's CSO's back there, etc.?

I moved down South from NYC and got so much shade from smart alec people (many had never even been to NYC but had opinions anyway), It was common to hear "I couldn't live in a place like NYC with no nature around". I snubbed them and told them I hunted wild Mushrooms in Old Growth Forest in Manhattan's Inwood Park and Salt Water Fly Fished the Nature Preserve in Breezy Point/Fort Tilden regularly....and took the Subway to both. I would add that Central Park is a renown Birding spot and a noted migratory bird stop over. One of the biggest Largemouth Bass I've ever caught was in Central Park Pond. They didn't know what to say after that. They also don't have Dragon Boat Racing down here ;)
@@K-MAN-ik2pz It's much cleaner than 40 years ago because of the passing of THE CLEAN WATER ACT (he saw an Otter!). Matt and Kelsey, I have nothing to say about the video but to offer my warmest compliments. To be honest with you, I had to double check its length because, all of a sudden, it was over :) I was afraid that I had missed or unintentionally skipped some parts of it. Matt, you got me sitting on the edge of my chair during almost the entire duration of the video, especially during the part you were trying to find a way to pass through that barrier (10:38). Your videos are amazing, I give you a lot of credit for going to these places like the Boat graveyard and Flushing creek. The amount of debris in that creek is scary. i am glad you were safe and did not get stuck. I know the area near Kings Plaza is a cool place to go Kayaking but there is a huge ship that is half sunk near the olds REDS building. Keep up the great videos and stay say out there
This is so cool.
I’ve been over the Northern Boulevard bridge a few times and thought this might be a good spot to paddle.
Thanks!

My father had a folding kayak circa 1939-1940 that he and some buddies used to take out on Westchester Creek. That was a fairly good fit as they lived on Homer Ave
I'm actually planning on paddling Westchester Creek. I'm not sure when, but it's on my list. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors Be warned it is another creek on the list of filthy waterways. He and one of his Homer Ave buddies used to talk about swimming in the creek and having to push turds out of the way. I always figure they were exaggerating and trying to impress me about the bad ole days 😉

Come to Little Neck Bay next? You're so close! My brother and I used to canoe from there all the time before he sold it. Great view of the old military battery at Fort Totten (what out for the boulders just under the surface), trips to Stepping Stone lighthouse, and beyond. We would also go up the east River but always turned back before Flushing Bay because we're just not as brave as you.

Yeah FINALLY first time in Queens!!! (because the smelly Newtown Creek is 100% Brooklyn) 😃
BTW that little dead end creek @20:30 used to go all the way to what is now 14th Avenue, over 100 years ago when College Point was actually a point
@maumor2 Hahaha. I actually did launch in Queens at Hunter's Point South Park BUT it's kind of the border of Brooklyn and Queens on Newtown Creek. So, I considered this my 1st "Queens" video. Let's call Newtown Creek, Brooklyn. 😀
Love the content man keep it coming. I grew up in Hackensack, the Hackensack River is pretty historic and has some awesome landmarks along it's banks including the USS Ling, thats if its still there. But you should definitely check out the Hackensack River in NJ that would be an awesome paddle. It's really cool to see NYC from it's different water ways. I lived in Bronx on and off for 26 years. In Rockland County Now. As a kid i explored parts of the Bronx River and that video brought back memories. Orchard Beach video took me back to my high school days. Part where he was showing her how to right her kayak had me remembering my fishing incidents there. Creek in Brooklyn I’ve cried that many of times going to work years ago. Yeah that water was filthy back then. In this video i have passed many of the areas. Didn’t know there was crabs in there. But close to LaGuardia Airport it used to smell really bad when it was low tide.

I wish my kayaking videos looked as cool as yours, you have some real talent with the camera and a good public speaking voice.
@elthehermit2059 Thank you. I appreciate it. I try to do my best with what I have. I have 1 camera, a cellphone, and a mic. I've also never considered myself to be a good public speaker, and for me, speaking on camera does not come easy. I just try to have a beginning (intro), middle (story / adventure / exploring), and an end (closing). I try to put myself in the seat of the viewer and, "Do I find it interesting?" I work hard on editing. There's room for improvement, but it's all coming together. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

That structure you paddled underneath was part of a former drawbridge that was replaced with a fixed bridge. At one time, much taller vessels used Flushing Creek .
@spuds6423 Ah, that makes sense. I thought it was strange that there was that void on both sides. I always have to explore and check things out, though. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
nice trip, it's right outside my neighborhood of Flushing.
A few times you've been in a location I would had been at. Maybe I'll get to say hello in person one day! Go to Dead Horse Bay next!

Love your Kayaking videos. Keep it up! Also, you should kayak from bayside marina in queens to great neck
They also don't have Dragon Boat Racing down here ;)
I started my Harlem River video at Inwood Hill Park. I loved that paddle. ua-cam.com/video/w035gahb7Ck/v-deo.html

@@K-MAN-ik2pz It's much cleaner than 40 years ago because of the passing of THE CLEAN WATER ACT (he saw an Otter!). Not to get political but only one person running wants to get rid of the Clean Water Act that cleaned up NY Harbor, Boston Harbor and numerous Harbors Rivers after many thought it would be impossible. All the businesses he paddled by now have to adhere to regulations and not dump directly into the Harbor like they used to.
@@myradioon Don't worry bro, the Clean Water Act isn't going anywhere, and if you are not in the environmental business, I suggest you do some research on your own. You would be horrified to see how mismanaged a lot of state and federal monies are presently wasted.
I would be glad to explain at a later time.
thats my old neighborhood! the end where you saw the pipes was built for the 1964 world's fair to create the fountain of the planets. while the fountains are long gone, the body of water, known as the Pool of Industry, surrounded by cement bulkheads and rails, still exist! During the fair the Flushing Creek was pumped and aerated and was not overgrown the way it is today. I pass and drive over those networks and highways all the time, i think its amazing you went kayaking on those waters.
Thank you for this informative comment. I really appreciate it. I've only seen the unisphere from the highway. This was the best way to enjoy the area. I'm so happy I did it. I saw so much!!
When I look at the underside of some bridges while rowing I think I may not feel the same about going over them after

You are one of the good ones - good work. That area of Flushing Bay will stink to high heaven after a rainstorm in NYC - you'll smell it while driving close to the water or on the Grand Central. NYC is trying to build more infrastructure to prevent sewer outflows but we're not there yet.

Matt and Kelsey, I have nothing to say about the video but to offer my warmest compliments. To be honest with you, I had to double check its length because, all of a sudden, it was over :)
I was afraid that I had missed or unintentionally skipped some parts of it.
Matt, you got me sitting on the edge of my chair during almost the entire duration of the video, especially during the part you were trying to find a way to pass through that barrier (10:38). I was afraid you might fall off the kayak, and the water looked way too polluted and full of unknown debris.
And you also got me wondering what we'd find past those bunches of seagrass (40:25). What a wonderful surprise, with friendly people fishing for crabs.
