Brooklyn Kayaking Adventure: Exploring an Abandoned Submarine & Coney Island Creek
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 тра 2024
- Come with me as I paddle along Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn NYC, cook lunch with a view, and take in the sights and sounds of the natural beauty of the city. Coney Island Creek is home to amazing wildlife, many burnt out ships and barges, and even a yellow submarine named the Quester I! I had to stop and explore the sub up close and see what it was all about. The Quester I was made from salvaged metal by a shipyard worker in Brooklyn, but failed to launch during its first attempt and has been stuck ever since.

Hey Matt!
I have to give a huge shout-out to you!!
Your Bronx River video woke something up inside of me and inspired me to get my own foldable kayak (I went with Tucktec) and get out there on my own. I watched a lot of different videos and did a lot of research to prepare myself. I've never kayaked before in my life nor did I ever have any interest until I saw your video.
Basically I've been sitting home on my days off watching UA-cam videos... cooking, van life, and recently I found your kayaking videos which led me to think to myself, why am I sitting here watching this when I could be living it instead???
So.... Matt, thank you!
I visited Coney Island Creek yesterday and it was beautiful and awesome! I had so much fun!
I'm embarrassed to post my video because I don't have the skills yet and it didn't come out like your videos, not even close. But I'm learning.
Thanks again and I hope you post more videos soon.
Today I'm thinking about checking out a creek in Staten Island I saw on go paddle.com
Wow, I love every bit of this! So amazing! Now that you are living it, please don't stop watching! This made my day. Thank you. I appreciate it more than you know.
I will definitely keep watching your videos, very cool!!!
Today I launched out of Gerritsen kayak launch inlet and it was great 👍👍👍
Parking right next to the entrance.
If you haven't been there it's nice to check out
Keep on keeping on!!!
I was born in Brooklyn 80 years ago, left in 1976 and never heard of that Submarine. You have gone to places I never went to. Thank you for these videos in areas I knew of but never went to. It makes me nostalgic. I did visit my mom there until 2015. Isn’t it terrible how people have such disregard for other peoples property and the pollution they create. 👍👍😊❤️
Thank you sir for watching! I really appreciate it and appreciate the detailed comment.
Dude I really enjoyed this video to see Coney Island from another perspective great job 👏🏾 sir
@@Diddy411 thank you so much for watching.
Congrats on becoming a UA-cam partner. Your videos are original and awesome!
THANK YOU!!!
It is great fun to be with you and see things that Most people will never see, Thank you!
Thank you!! I appreciate you watching.
It was great to see the ship/ boat “graveyard”
Thank you!
For future reference - clickbait thumbnail..."I got run over by a TRAIN!!!" 🤣
Hahaha, but that's not real. I want to be real. Not clickbait. I did get run over by a train though! 🤣
You need to kayak the Gowanus Canal as well as the Newtown/Maspeth Creek
Gowanus canal may be my next video. Been doing some research. So crazy!
You should try Jamaica Bay it's a Oasis in the city nature reserve very shallow
My Brooklyn video goes through Jamaica Bay.
Hey Matt - perhaps you'd enjoy paddling along the Hackensack River in NJ - particularly near the Hackensack Meadowlands Conservation and Wildlife Area and the HMDC Nature Center near North Arlington NJ (where I lived when I was a little kid in the 1960s). Great job on your videos.
I will def research it some more. Thank you.
love that the sub looks like a duck cyber truck with a cork in its head at 6:46
🤣🤣🤣
Great video! I was raised within walking distance of the creek. A couple of suggestions; Some historical data would be interesting. Coney Island creek did at one point connect with Sheepshead bay thus making Coney Island an actual island. The creek was filled in along the route where the Belt parkway currently runs. Also, for those who reside outside the area, an overview of a map. or nautical chart that depicts your travel route would be helpful and interesting.
Pinned your comment for the added history. Thank you. I'm better at exploring and adventuring than being a historian but I'm improving. Lol.
I'm originally from Carnise and stayed with my grandmother-Brighton 4th-the building that's up against the boardwalk-while attending SVA. I didn't realize the creek once ran to Sheepshead Bay. I Love NY/American history!...I also thought that it would be cool if he showed us his route.
You are 7 blocks away from the official Nathan's hotdog restaurant where the competition takes place. Amazing vid man thanks for showing the city's nature side. Go island hopping on Jamaica Bay. Go in the airport marsh different world.
Very good ideas. 💡
I lived in Coney Island and every time we passed it we’d all start singing yellow submarine! And that Bay is beautiful especially at night watching the Verrazano light up!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing that. Love it. Thank you for watching.
I am from Coney Island born and raised yeah that submarine a known fact! You really see it from Kaiser Park when the tide is low.
Awesome! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Brooklyn Boy here, great content, reminds me of my childhood in search of adventure, your contents hits bro
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching. Lots of other videos for you to check out. I appreciate the comment.
I enjoy your videos, as they are not only interesting but very relaxing! Also, never thought that there would be any type kayaking would be available around Brooklyn or NY!
This means the world to me. Thank you.
Congrats on the UA-cam thing. The way you blew through those 2 chili dogs shoulda made 3 or 4!
That's called editing but I could have had 3 or 4. 🤣😂
I'm always by there by the verazano bridge. Lots of good fishing and crabbing spots out there.
The smaller geese at 30:00 are called Brant. They are a coastal species that favors tidal estuaries.
Thank you!! Appreciate the comment and appreciate you watching.
The water way that splits staten island and new jersey, has a boat graveyard, it's by the Lowe's. I believe the water way is called ""Great Fresh Kills""
Thank you for the suggestion.
This was so cool, Matt. Thanks for taking us along! PS The small geese are called Brants.
Thank you for teaching me something! Looked it up. So awesome.
Thanks for another great video.. It's a mini history lesson on things mostly forgotten to time. New York has a lot of forgotten history, but not to be surprised, as it was one of the original 13 colonies back in the day. I laughed to myself, as you are continually seeing so much debris in the water., but at least no E-Bikes to pull out of the water this time. Keep up with the cool videos in spirit of exploration. As always, love the videos and narration.. Well done 👍
Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it and appreciate the compliments.
It's so weird & different the places you go. Canoeing & camp stove cooking so close to NYC 😂. Love it!❤ who would have thought?
Thank you. I try to bring a camping element to my day trips. Thank you for watching. I love exploring interesting places.
Great video. I have flown my drone over that submarine multiple times, but your view beats any aerial view.
Wow, thank you!!
I really want to add a drone to my UA-cam videos. Any recommendations on something good quality, decent price and easy to fly?
@@TwoFeetOutdoors for the adventures you are doing I would highly recommend the DJI Mini 4 pro
14:28. Cube Smart is a Storage Facility where you can rent various size spaces to store things that are overflowing out of your house.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Added a 👍. Come back out to LI. There are some more places to canoe or kayak.
I love them. I'll be back.
Hey I’m from Howard beach it’s near jfk airport all sorts of cool things there !! The train bridge there has tombstones around the base of the south side of the bridge and some cool creeks around there also congrats on the partnership!!!❤
Def want to check them out. Thank you.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors also I bet if you did some magnet 🧲 fishing in wierd spots might be interesting 🤔
Please go to Staten Island Boat Graveyard. I have taken pictures with a drone but would like to see it from your perspective. There is so much to see in that location. Even on the jersey side. Wish I could film your journey via drone shots. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
Thank you for doing the Coney Island creek. I live in Coney Island and always wanted to see from the creek level. To bad you didn’t get past the D, N train tracks, there’s a big field to the left where a lot of birds and swans lay eggs. The creek ends at Shell road and really stinks over there at low tide. The end does have a lot of fish in it loaded with small fry and fluke.
I hoped to make it to Shell Road. I didn't like that 2nd spot unter the train bridge. 😕
would you ever consider paddling out to the pier of the bridge? I'm sure a bunch of us would love to see that POV.
Paddling out to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge? Likely not, too much of a shipping channel. I try to avoid big moving objects with big wakes.
Have you considered Matawan creek? lots of history, part of the shark attacks that inspired Jaws took place on that creek.
That sounds interesting but I'm not sure I like the vibe of the history. Thank you!
Really cool video, buddy. That’s my old neighborhood right there. A good friend of mine used to sit outside by that Starbucks and always referred to it as “coffee on the canal”… haha. I love stand up paddle boarding and e-foiling in those same water at Coney Island Creek… but keep that beautiful spot a secret! 😎 Love those Nathan dogs too 💪
Your videos are so relaxing to watch. Very interesting. Its interesting to see such peaceful parts especially in a big city... 👍
Thank you! Your 1st sentence is key in a world that sometimes feels beyond our control. I want my videos to be relaxing.
@@TwoFeetOutdoorsyour welcome. All the best.
I think those small geese are called "brant" - they are kinda neat to watch etc... Like your videos...
Thank you!
Somehow I thought you might be having some Nathan's hot dogs. Excellent camera work. Nice you had the beach to yourself.
Hahaha. Funny thing is, that's only been a funny thing for UA-cam. I rarely eat hotdogs. 🤣🤣🤣 Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them but it's not a regular thing like the channel may lead some to believe. Lol
I am not complaining that you were eating those hot dogs too fast for my enjoyment or anything, cause that would just be weird. But, they did look pretty good though ! Thanks for another kayak adventure.
Sometimes I feel like my eating segments are too long so I went with fast clips to get through it but get the point. 😆
Can you kayak the river in Long Island City below the abandoned Montauk LIRR railroad line next? It’s incredibly peaceful and one of my favorite childhood places to visit.
The Newtown/Maspeth Creek
I'll look into it! Thanks for the suggestion.
@@TwoFeetOutdoorsmake sure you wear a gas mask 😂 its toxic waters.
@@LP_NY I'm familiar with that part of it. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing. I used to work at that Verizon garage you passed in the creek. I’ve pulled my boat to that gas dock next door to it many years ago when things looked much better and watched the World Trade Center ruins burn from the very beach you had lunch on during the 9/11 attack. The area has changed so much.
Wow, incredible. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Would like to see a kayak review as well.
Definitely in the works for the future. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it.
would you be interested in a story on the Morris Canal in Jersey City?
I'll def do some research.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors i dont know if it still there, but when i was a kid it was
The end should be the train yard.
I had to finish with lunch and Nathan's Hot Dogs. Lol
And the old baseball field
It's cool to see all the these places I've been for my exploring hikes from a different perspective. I'm considering getting a kayak now
That's awesome. Thank you!
Love this! You take excellent advantage of kayaks' ability to go where few other boats dare. Speaking of dares, how about the Fresh Kills Ship Graveyard? ;)
I def want to check that out!! Thank you for watching, commenting and making that suggestion.
That's were super storm sandy entered lots of sunken ships boats and abandoned peers docks.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
They make underwater drones. I know you couldn't use it everywhere you go, but I think it could add some really cool shots, especially to something like this.
Yes, I do have an underwater case for my camera. Been waiting for the right circumstance where the water is clear enough. Def will in the future. I also want to add an actual drone into the mix.
Oh man, now I want a chili cheese dog!
Hahaha. So good. Thanks for watching.
Myself living on the west coast all my life, I was able to follow along on Google Maps. Very interesting and thanks for the fascinating video.
Thank you. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
That fence wasn't on the side of the subway bridge when I retired in 2015. I'm puzzled why it was put there. There are a bunch of old train radios in the water next to the bridges where the subway runs. I used to park in Coney Island Yard, and my day ended at Stillwell Avenue terminal. I used to walk the tracks across the creek and into the yard in the middle of the night. Certain times of the year there were things that looked like shrimp swimming near the surface in such great numbers that the water looked like it was boiling. I have seen nice sized blue fish in the creek as well, probably chasing baitfish. The creek used to smell awful down near where it ends, but some years ago they cleaned it out so it is not as bad. It was nice to watch your video. I left Brooklyn after living there for 60+ years. I miss salt water. I'm south of Niagara Falls now in a small town. The 'driver' of subway trains is called a motorman, or more recently a Train Operator. The Conductor is in the middle of the train, he opens and closes the train doors and makes announcements.
Thanks for teaching me some things. Thanks for watching!
Review of your Oru Kayak would be really appreciated 👍
Yes, some reviews of products are in the works.
I was thinking the same thing. Also if you can show how you put together the Ori and take it apart. Don't forget to review your stove.
I just took possession of a Oru Coast kayak. I got the basic bundle. As I am still a bit big but working successfully losing weight and feeling much better I am acquiring more gear life vest, sump pump, etc. I am taking swim lessons. My wife insists on this. I have thought about more stuff as my wife and daughter are also interested too. I am even considering giving this Oru kayak to daughter as she has a Toyota Camary and I think she is not ready for idea of roof rack! I am looking at the Eddyline Sandpiper 130 for myself and wife. We will see bc a lot can be said for convenience of the Oro!
Congrats, and thanks for hitting the nail on the head as far as peaceful video-making goes.
Pinning this comment. Thank you!
Wild I have my boat parked there lol cheap. On Neptune st
That's awesome. Thank you for watching and commenting.
A very unique perspective indeed. Most of us will never experience in person. The Bronx river video was my first time on your channel. Theres an abandoned Island northeast of Orchard Beach bordering Westchester County New York Known as David's Island. Just an idea. Thanks again for sharing. 👍
I was paddling Pelham Bay Park, Hog Island and a bunch of smaller islands around there yesterday but I didn't go to David's Island. I'll keep that Island in mind.
Was pretty cool to see the submarine up close like that... Thank you for your videos
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Well done man! I'm hoping to follow some day! Keep the stoke for the craft and the paddle alive!
Thank you so much!!
Lil marina hahahahahaha love it there.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Congrats on the monetization!
Great video as usual.
Thank you so much 😀
This is cool exploring NYC by kayak.
Thank you! I happen to agree. 😀
Great videos…It’s so great to see NYC from such different perspectives. Congrats on your UA-cam success. That was a great meal to celebrate. Chili dogs rule. Stay well👍😉
I'm from Brooklyn n we use cut school in 90s n "borrow" row boats from Smith boats on broad ch n cruise around jfk🤣🤣 it was terrifying bcuz we always thought the water was toxic bk then, anyhow enjoyed your last view vids popping up on my tv👌
Thank you for watching! That's such a great story.
Spent 4 years in Aberdeen Maryland , ( military) went to the city quite a few times in those years , I really enjoy you're prospective of this area!
Hey ya paddled right past where Ernest Hemingway had his boat Pilar built at Wheeler Boatyard which is where Stop n Shop stands now on Stilwell. They were a high end boat builder back in the early 1900s and had some military contracts also.
Wow, interesting! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Love this type of video's. Outdoor in N.Y.C rivers and bays.
Thank you!
Congratulations!! , LOVE AN FIND IT INTERESTING UR FINDINGS. THE SOUND OF WATER AS U ROW IS SO RELAXING. GREAT WORK THANK YOU. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. GOD BLESS U.
My too. The sound of the water is my favor part of kayaking.
I have no idea how I stumbled on your videos but actually very good. I was wondering I watch a lot of moto vloggers and sometimes they'll put up a map of where they are or where they're going. Some people use relive app IDK if it works with rivers. Nothing crazy, You've half convinced me to get a kayak and you never know if I might want to recreate the adventure you're on.
Keep up the hard work.
I'm working on adding additional items (like maps) etc potentially in the future. Thank you for commenting.
The tide was coming up when you got up to that gated bridge if you went under you would have had to jump ship to come back.
I agree. Thank you for watching and commenting.
U ever thought of putting a go attached to the bottom of your kayak to capture underwater life
I actually have an underwater case for my camera. I'll try it in my next video very soon.
That was neat! Love the "tropical" parts of Staten Island, and great lunch spot! Judging how that first ladder rung on the submarine was corroded, walking on it was a little "sketchy"!
And congrats on the YT news!
I think that I will take some kayaking lessons in Dallas. There is program this weekend. Safety first.
That's a great idea! Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
How awesome! Very interesting, all the content of your video. UA-cam just suggested your channel, so glad it did 🙂
I'm glad it did too. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it. I have lots of other videos you may like too. Thanks.
Andrea Doria? has no one else noted Seinfeld? hahah// very cool to see the sub! such a nice time on the water, awesome you enjoy the City this way and even better you can bring a meal that is great // congrats on the monetization but also keep an eye on how many commercials they put in// i turn my adblocker off on youtube to support you folks but if you dont monitor how the ads are set they will put in way too many. // anyway all kinds of great scenes from the water here thanks for sharing
Thank you! Appreciate the tips.
The yellow is the part the tide doesn't get
Exactly. Thank you for watching and commenting.
That’s one AWSOME find Matt right there in Coney Island Creek.
Thank you! This was a fun video to make. So unique and interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting.
My ex girlfriend lived right across the street from the yellow abandoned submarine. we would go to the park and see it.
I bet it looks really cool from Kaiser Park at low tide.
In Texas we call them honkers!
Call the Canada Geese honkers?
Yes I guess that is a name my wife Ruth & I gave them! Their presence means fall is here is terrible hot Texas!
Really enjoying your videos. I've been kayak since 1975. Love it.
Amazing how pretty the views you're sharing with us. Thank you.
HOLD ON A MINUTE!!! URGENT UPDATE; congrats on your acceptance to the You Tube program.
I see why you get as much viewing as you do. Again THANK YOU🎉
URGENT REPLY: Thank you!!! 😊
Good stuff man. Keep up the cool videos. This is putting some peace in our lives.
Thank you! That's really nice to say! That's what I'm hoping for. Thank you for watching.
These videos are great !!!! Born and raised in NYC and was always intrigued by the history of the waterways. Does shed a light on the fact that with all the city resources, the waterways should be cleaned up. Currently live in Dallas, these videos make me miss home
Thank you! I completely agree.
Congratulations, thanks for all the great videos
Thank you for watching!
wow!!! I've got one for you Two Feet.
North and South Brother Island, and or even execution Light house off city island. Hope you can check these out.
Very cool that you do this. Wish i had the time to see what you see. Very cool. You give me inspiration to do this with my two young boys. Hopefully when there older. Keep on paddling buddy!!
I'll look into those. I did just paddle yesterday at Pelham Bay Park and Hog Island as well as a few other small islands. So beautiful! Thank you for commenting and watching. I really appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors amazing keep up great work. looking foward to that video.
Awesome! I grew up fishing Jamaica bay. Never knew about this
Thank you for watching and commenting.
I'm from Brooklyn and know all the places you've been to. You should host tours. I would love to come along. I am not an experienced canoer.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
You are very brave , courageous adventures, & smart man
Thank you!! 😊
Just found you. From Staten Island always wanted to do what you're doing being that I love on a island water everwhere. Safe travels.
Thank you for watching.
That is quite a substantial home built submarine. Wow
Def very interesting, right? Thank you for watching and commenting.
That Oru kayak was a great investment, look at all of the great adventures you have been on, thanks for these videos!
Yes, I got a great deal on it too. So it worked out even better. A woman in Illinois sold it to me for half the original cost. She listed it in one of the Oru Kayak Facebook groups. Win, win.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors It's real neat to follow your adventures on Google Maps or Google Earth. Congrats on your attaining UA-cam milestone
@JG-od3xy thank you so much for watching and following along. I appreciate it.
The building to the right of the Cube building is probably the parking lot to Home Depot. If you continue on you should pass a bridge.
I'm a licensed kayak instructor and live 3 minutes away from the creek you couldn't get me in that benzene coal tar invested water for a million dollars
Coney island creek was very pleasant. Where do you paddle locally?
@TwoFeetOutdoors you actually covered a few places like shell bank creek the salt marsh by dead horse bay which beaches are covered in radium left there from the old garbage dump I think from old ship reflectors also the whole Jamaica Bay like ruffle bar and Raritan bay I grew up in coney island so I know the whole area live here over 50yrs I just wish it was cleaner like coney island creek they tested out a few years ago to see if they could dredge it unfortunately there's so much benzene and coal tar left there from Brooklyn union gas which had a huge facility in coney island they decided it would cost too much to clean but the creek still filled with wild life I've seen piping plovers there big runs of fish like stripped bass and blue fish chasing bunker there also lots of raccoons which I never seen when I grew up .I like to paddle to swinburne and Hoffman by the verrazzano bridge when the seals are there
Dude, you're really close to where I live. Nice videos. I never seen my area from that perspective
That's really awesome!! Thanks for watching.
go to fresh kills park in staten island nice little water way.. there is also a ship graveyard in staten island as well
Both def look awesome. Going to put it on the short list.
Congrats on becoming a UA-cam partner. Hopefully you hit it big. My suggestion is, “Kayaking across America”. There a French UA-camr, his name is Kino Yves, who is biking across Africa and he’s doing very well. Just an idea. Would take a couple of years probably.
Nice ride
Thank you. Appreciate you watching.
have you ever considered doing a Matawan Creek paddle to find the place where Lester Stilwell was attacked by a shark that started the shark frenzy. and a slew of attacks. there is alot of history on the topic
By the way
Love the vids
that lunch was awesome .
later
Tomhobbies
I haven't but I'll look into it. Not familiar. Thank you!
Would have been awesome to see some metal detecting Along the beach after lunch, see if you find any cool things. And have you ever found anything scary or horrific on one of your kayaking trips, like say something dead floating in the water?
No, I haven't. I don't own a metal detector, but I'd like to get a magnet for some occasional magnet fishing. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Congratulations , keep doing you!
Thank you!
Brave man congratulations on getting monetized I grew up in those Gravesend projects we fished the creek and and played on the old coal barges that were grounded there it’s cool seeing the old sub keep up the good work can’t wait for the next adventure
Just posted a new video tonight. Hope you'll give it a watch. Thank you!
I lived so close my whole life. Definitely gonna get a round to checking the area out
Just subscribe to your channel I love it I live in Brooklyn right now but I'm from Long Island and I had to laugh when I said cube smart out loud before you did
Thank you so much! I appreciate it.
Congrats bro!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching.
Quester 1. 1967. Apparetly is was ALL Yellow.
In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines
So we sailed on to the sun
'Til we found a sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine
… We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
